OPI Teenage Dream vs. Sally Hansen Strobe Light: what do YOU think?

Reader Steffany was nice enough to take a pic of her bottle of OPI Teenage Dream next to Sally Hansen Strobe Light:

image credit: Steffany for Nouveau Cheap
OPI Teenage Dream (retail: around $8)
Sally Hansen Strobe Light (retail: around $2.99)

After Steffany made this discovery, she said she googled the two polishes and found that they're relatively similar. After she brought this to my attention (thanks again for that, Steffany!) I googled it too and, to my surprise, the first two blog posts to come up happen to be written by two blogging pals of mine:

If you'd like to see Krissy's dupe comparison post, check it out here.

And if you'd like to see Pammy's dupe comparison post, you can see it here.

After reading both of these posts (which were both incredibly helpful), I feel like I know exactly what the differences are between these two polishes. I'm inclined to say that, from a distance, they'd look similar on the nail--especially if you were to use the polish as a layering shade over another color.

What do YOU think?

What I'm loving right now...

It's been a while since I did a What I'm Loving Right Now post, so I thought I'd share with you some of the drugstore products that I find myself reaching for again and again these days.

 1. L.A. Colors Professional Series 3 Color Eyeshadow in Sand Dune (originally reviewed here). Bronze-y brown shadows are a staple for me, and I find myself reaching for the middle shade in this trio (which I purchased at Dollar Tree for, of course, $1) a lot lately. I'm so impressed by the texture, pigmentation and vibrancy of these little shadows, and that middle shade is just incredibly easy for me to wear from lashline to crease.

2. CoverGirl Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Lush Berry. I've raved endlessly about this product ever since my original review back in May of 2010, and after a good long run of wearing powder blushes and nothing else, I find myself really enjoying the feel of a nice cream blush again. Unlike so many other cream blushes, this stuff LASTS, even in the hot, humid weather we're currently having in San Diego. I can put this on my bare skin (no foundation, powder, or anything else) and I can still see it some eight hours later. Plus, who doesn't like a bit of extra moisturizing from the Olay moisturizer built into this product? The shade, Lush Berry, is just perfect for me--it gives a beautiful, natural flushed look to my cheeks.

3. The (newish) got2b Fat-tastic Dry Shampoo is the one I've been reaching for the most lately out of all my dry shampoos (you can see my original review here). Why? Because it's the closest thing to my beloved Batiste dry shampoo, which I can only get at Sally (and it costs less than Batiste!). Also, got2b Fat-tastic Dry Shampoo smells just like Bath and Body Works Shea Cashmere products, which I LOVE.

4. CVS brand Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover is my Holy Grail eye makeup remover, and I know I've said that many times here. But seriously, it's the only stuff I use when I need extra help in removing my eye makeup, so I had to give it another shout-out.

5. I gave you a preliminary review of Organix Cherry Blossom Poppy Gentle Cleansing Milk last month, so I wanted to follow up and let you know that I've been reaching for it ever since that post. I'm in love with the fragrance, and I just adore how gentle it is, yet how effective it is at removing the makeup, oil and grime from my face. And my favorite part is that it doesn't dry out my skin or leave it feeling tight. But I also love the silky, gel-like consistency of this stuff--it's got such a unique texture for a cleanser.

So, what are YOU currently loving from the drugstore?

Some of the products featured in this post were given to Nouveau Cheap for previous reviews,, either directly from the manufacturer or from the agency that works on behalf of the manufacturer. All reviews on NouveauCheap.blogspot.com are the honest opinion of its author and editorial samples do not, in any way, affect the outcome of product reviews.

Review: Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses

Layered and swirled glosses are not new inventions, of course, but when they're adorable, taste delicious and retail for $2.99, well who can resist?

Almost exactly one year ago to date, I posted about some limited edition Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny glosses that were popping up at Walgreens. That collection never did make it to my local Walgreens, but I haven't been able to get these glosses out of my head since I first posted those pics.

Well a few weeks ago I discovered that Jordana now has the Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses for sale on their website, and they're part of their CORE collection! Some of the flavors and shades are different than the original limited edition collection, but the one I wanted the very most, Rainbow Sherbet, is part of the core collection, which pretty much made my day.

Jordana sent me the collection recently for review, and I'm so excited to share my thoughts with you!

Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses
(retail: $2.99 each, 0.47 oz)

Free sample of Dove Go Fresh Body Mist

This just hit my in-box and I rushed to post about it because, as with all offers like this, they tend to sell out quickly. I'd hurry and sign up if you're interested:

(Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "free trial and $1 off your next Go Fresh purchase" to sign up)

I haven't signed up yet so I don't know if you'll have a choice as to the scent you receive, but free is free, right? I really hope the Plum & Sakura Blossom scent (pictured above) is an option--I'm kind of obsessed with that scent at the moment.

I hope you all have a chance to grab this one before it's gone!

Review: Duri Fall 2011 shades and Krakls

A few weeks ago I posted about the new Fall 2011 collection from Duri called Wine Tasting Party, and today I'd like to show you a few shades from this collection, and also a few of their Krakl polishes:

Pinot Noir, Grape Swirl, Krakl Black Widow and Krakl Queen of Hearts
(polish retail: $5 each; Krakl retail: $9 each, 0.5 oz)

The Wednesday Question

Another week has rolled on by and it's time again for the Wednesday Question:

What's the one drugstore beauty product you'll happily pay full price for?

For me, it would be Maybelline Define-a-Brow eyebrow pencil in Dark Blonde. This little pencil feels like it was made for me--it's the perfect shade for my brows, it's small and precise and it never needs sharpening. After years of using higher end brow products, I've finally found my Holy Grail eyebrow pencil and I depend on it so much, I don't even wait for sales. When I need it, I happily buy it for full price.

How about you?

Spotted: Sinful Colors Limited Edition Crackle display

Last week, my pal Meagan of Bonny Binnacle told me about a new Sinful Colors crackle display at Meijer (thanks, Meagan!) and then today, the lovely Carla of Deuce Beauties was kind enough to share a pic of the display (which she spotted at Walgreens):

image credit: Carla for Nouveau Cheap
Limited Edition Sinful Colors Crackle
(retail: $4.99)

This crackle comes in one shade (black) and per the display, it's a limited edition product that will only be available "while supplies last".  The text above the price reads: "Apply over your favorite Sinful shade for a crackle finish."

Well, I guess we can add this to the long (and ever-growing) list of polish brands that now have a crackle top coat!

Thanks so much, Carla and Meagan, for the great info!

Have you spotted the LE Sinful Colors Crackle display in your area yet?

Swatchfest: NYC Limited Edition Black Magic Collection (pic heavy)

Back in the beginning of August when I got the official details about NYC's Halloween collection, Black Magic, I was so excited to see it in person. Shortly after that post, I spotted the display at my local Rite Aid, so hopefully that means many of you have also spotted this collection in your areas.

Today I'd like to give you a closer look at some of the products in this collection. NYC sent me a variety of products from Black Magic but I did not receive the mascara, black lipstick or polishes, so those are the only products I'm not going to cover in this post.

This is not a formal review of the products in Black Magic. I wanted to get these swatches up as quickly as possible due to the seasonal, limited edition nature of the collection.

New Maybelline coupon from Rite Aid (hurry!)

Rite Aid shoppers: hurry, hurry! Grab this $1 off Maybelline coupon from Rite Aid's Facebook page as soon as you can, because these coupons go quickly. All you have to do is "like" Rite Aid (if you haven't already) to access the coupon.

This is a great coupon to use this week for the BOGO1/2OFF sale on Maybelline, especially since you get $5 +UP Rewards when you spend $20.

AND, there are printable manufacturer's coupons available, which you can STACK with the Rite Aid coupon for even more savings (click here to print $1 off coupon for Fit Me powder and click here to print $1 off coupon for Fit Me foundation).

Important BOGOFREE and sale updates!

Two important bits of info for you regarding the drugstore sales that started today (Sunday):

A huge thanks to reader makeupaddict for this one: this week (9/4 - 9/10), Wet n Wild eye, lip and nail products are BOGOFREE at CVS! This wasn't listed in some of the ads that are currently online, so my guess is that this ad only ran in regions where CVS stores carry the full core display of Wet n Wild products (like this). So if you don't see this listed in your local CVS ad for this week, take some products to the scanner and see if they come up BOGOFREE!

A huge thanks to reader heatherkelley for letting us know that she spotted BOGOFREE sale signs up on the new Rite Aid brand makeup brushes at her Rite Aid. So I guess they ARE included in the sale (ad states all cotton, applicators and sponges are BOGOFREE). Just FYI, I am posting my review of one of these brushes today, in case you're interested.

UPDATE: I just called my local Rite Aid and they told me the brushes are NOT included in the BOGOFREE sale, so be sure you ask your store to scan your brushes before you buy them and see if they come up BOGOFREE.

And finally, a reminder about the Sally Beauty clearance sale:

Now through tomorrow (9/5) this red tag clearance sale is going on IN-STORE AND ONLINE (if shopping online, use promo code 555991 at checkout).

As we all know, the deals IN-STORE are always better than the online deals and they vary from store to store. A kind reader emailed me yesterday to let me know what she was able to find at her local Sally on clearance and she really scored! She was able to pick up a $45 Helen of Troy straightener for $10 (wow!) and she also got some Fingerpaints and Nina Ultra Pro polishes for a dollar each.

PS: If you're shopping online, be sure to add code 555991 after you've put some items in your cart to see if they're truly on clearance. For example, I put an Orly nail polish from the clearance section in my cart but the 50% off code did NOT apply. BUT, when I put one of these shadows in my cart, the code DID apply and $2 was deducted from the price of the item (I was charged $1.99 instead of $3.99). So test the code on the things you want and see if they come up 50% off.

Thanks SO much to everyone who contributed info to this post. I really appreciate it!

Spotted: Revlon Edgy Elegance collection

Before I get into this new collection, I want to let you know that the lovely Yuliya has close-up pics on her blog of all the products in the new Revlon Expressionists collection

If you're interested in any of the polishes in the Expressionists collection (like the Bad Romance dupe), I've got a great tip! Thanks to so many of you for this one: the polishes in this collection are in the core collection display at Target (they're not LE colors, apparently, so they're in with the regular shades) and they're currently on sale for $3.74. BUT, there's also a $1 Revlon coupon on the Target website right now, so print that out and you'll get one for $2.74!

Now, on to the OTHER new collection from Revlon:

image credit: Kristine for Nouveau Cheap

My lovely reader and fellow blogger Kristine, of Fairy Tale Charm, was kind enough to share this pic of the collection, which she spotted at her local Rite Aid. She also has great close-ups of all of the shades, which you can see here.

Amy from Gotham Polish emailed me when I was working on this very post to let me know she spotted Edgy Elegance at her local Bed Bath and Beyond, and my reader Jeanlandean left a comment a few days ago saying she spotted this display at her Rite Aid too, so be on the lookout!

Thanks so much to Yuliya, Kristine, Amy, Jeanlandean and everyone who took the time to share the info about the Target deal. I really, really appreciate it!

Have you spotted the Expressionists or Edgy Elegance displays in your area yet?

Review: Maybelline SuperStay 24 Color in So Sienna

I can probably count the number of truly negative reviews I have posted on this blog on one hand. The reason I rarely post negative reviews is because, given the amount of products I purchase, receive and test in a given month, I MUCH prefer to spend my time sharing with you the best of the best--the products I personally love and am very excited about.

The most recent negative review that comes to mind is the one I wrote for this product, and even then, I heard from readers who said, "Hey, wait a minute, I LOVE that product". So even when I'm writing a negative review, I still try to keep in mind readers who might benefit from at least a certain attribute of the product.

But every once in a while, a product comes around that I honestly can't find a positive attribute or quality to write about, no matter how hard I try.

Great deal on Wet n Wild FastDry Polish 2-packs

Remember back in July when I posted about the Wet n Wild Perfect Couple polish promotion? If you missed that post, Wet n Wild put together 2-packs of FastDry polishes (one core collection shade and one clear top coat) for just $1.99 total.

Here's a pic from my original post, for reference:

Why am I telling you this? Well thanks to so many of you for the heads-up that if your Walgreens still has these Perfect Couple two-packs, they're ringing up for just $0.99 now!

Why?

Because all regularly-priced $1.99 items are on sale for $0.99 for the entire month at Walgreens (please click here for all the details on the $0.99 Walgreens promotion if you missed my original post).

What a GREAT deal--two FastDry polishes for just $0.99!

A huge thanks to everyone who took the time to let me know about this--I really appreciate it!

Awesome Carmex deals and more new printable beauty coupons

If you want this Carmex deal, you'll have to act QUICKLY because this offer is only good at Walgreens through this Saturday (Sept. 3rd).

A HUGE thanks to my pal Lisa over at Drugstore Divas for this one:

This week, Walgreens has the new Carmex Lime Twist and Vanilla lip balms (which I reviewed here) on sale for $1.50 each and you get back $1.50 in Register Rewards (thanks to many of you for telling me about this--I missed it in my weekly sale post).

But thanks to Lisa, this deal becomes a fun little MONEY-MAKER, because there's a new $0.30 off Carmex printable coupon. So you'll pay just $1.20 for your lip balm and get $1.50 back in Register Rewards. Yay!

And here's ANOTHER great Carmex deal for NEXT week (again, thanks to Lisa!):

Starting this Sunday at Walgreens, Carmex body products (click here for my review) are going to be 2/$10 with $5 back in Register Rewards. But it gets better: there's a new $1 off Carmex skincare coupon that just went up! HURRY if you want this coupon though, because who knows when it will be taken down.

New Milani Limited Edition MEWOW Look at My Nails Collection

I just received the following info from Milani about their new MEWOW Look at My Nails collection:

According to Milani, the MEWOW Look at My Nails collection is only available as limited edition in select Walgreens stores this month (but you can also purchase it on the Milani website). The entire collection retails for $4.99 each.

This collection contains the LE Krackle Top Coat (black) and six shades of LE High Speed Fast Dry Nail Lacquers.

Four of the High Speed Fast Dry Nail Lacquers are new shades:

Flashy Silver
Blue Lightening
Speed Up Pink
Brisk Orange

The other two shades in this display were previously part of the Summer 2011 LE Collection:

Purple Rush
(click here to see my swatches)
Racy Green

A few readers have told me that they've already spotted this display at their local drugstores, so be on the lookout for it. Also, if you plan to purchase Speed Up Pink, it is currently sold out on the Milani website so definitely be on the lookout for it at your drugstores!

Nouveau Cheap readers have spoken: your favorite drugstore concealer brand is...

It's that time again! After 1,086 votes, the latest reader poll has ended and the results are in:

First place:
Maybelline (278 votes)

Second place:
Hard Candy (148 votes)

Third place:
Revlon (137 votes)

No other brands cracked 100+ votes, but CoverGirl came close at 77 votes

If you voted for Maybelline (my personal choice for their SuperStay concealer), I'd love to know which particular product is your favorite.

I'm assuming that if you voted for Hard Candy, you probably are a fan of this concealer, but if you voted for Hard Candy and prefer another one of their concealers, I'd love to hear about that too!

And of course if you voted for Revlon, or any other brand in this poll for that matter, let us know which product you love! Oh, and if you  voted "other" I'd really love to know which drugstore brand you would have voted for if it had been an option.

Thanks SO much to everyone who took the time to vote in this poll. I love seeing the results each month and hearing what YOU have to say. It helps influence my purchases and always turns me on to great new products I've never tried before!

If you have a minute, the new poll is up and I'd love it if you'd take a sec to vote. This month we're tackling eyeliner, and since I know it is impossible for many of us to pin down ONE favorite brand, I set it so that you can select multiple answers. Thanks in advance for voting!
