I will freely admit to you that every time I see a new LA Colors product pop up at my local Dollar Tree, my wallet magically opens. For just a buck, how can I resist trying something that could end up being a fantastic little gem?
I've had very good luck with LA Colors eyeshadows in the past. I love their 12-pan palettes, 6-pan palettes and their mineral eyeshadow singles. In fact, I think the only LA Colors shadows that haven't worked out for me are their singles and duos, which I think are pretty chalky and not very pigmented. But the palettes and mineral shadows work excellently for me with the help of a good primer, and I find that the colors stay vivid all day with very little creasing or fading.
That said, when I saw these new eyeshadow trios recently at Dollar Tree, I simply could not resist:
L.A. Colors Professional Series 3 Color Eyeshadows
(retail: $1 each at Dollar Tree)
First of all, I was thrilled to see some interesting shade combinations in these trios. The colors very much remind me of combinations you'd find in the NYX eyeshadow trios.
I always love when a trio contains a nice bronzey-brown coupled with a light blue. I think those two shades are lovely for a very soft, pretty eye look and the charcoal shade used in the crease can really pull it together nicely. In other words, I think this was a well-thought-out combination of colors.
Is it just me or can you hear the words "grassy knoll" and NOT think of the JFK assassination? Anyway...if you like rich greens, this one's for you. There's a lime, a kelly and an olive in this collection of greens, but the best part is that none of them are too dark or too light. Each could be worn alone for a nice wash of color. I actually prefer mid-tone greens over dark and light shades of green because I find that wearing too many shades of green at once looks garish on me. When I wear green eyeshadow, I try to stick to one shade from lashline to crease and that's it. So this is really a dream palette for me.
First of all, I had to get this trio because of the name. Lemon Grove is a town in San Diego that's claim to fame is having "The Best Climate on Earth". Don't believe me? Well there's a huge lemon in the town square of Lemon Grove that proudly proclaims this fact:
Every time I pass by the giant lemon it makes me smile. But anyway, back to the Lemon Grove trio:
You can't tell in my photos, but the lime green in this trio could pretty much be considered a neon. MAN is it bright! It's really a shocking neon green that I think would look ah-maze-ing on deeper skintones. The yellow is a bright lemon yellow and I adore the coppery-brown shade as well.
Here are some swatches (all colors were swatched on bare skin without primer):
As you can see, all three trios have great color payoff, and I found the texture of each shadow to be consistent with the texture of the shadows in the 6-pans and 12-pans. They are creamy to the point where they can be a little bit crumbly, but they're not difficult to work with by any means.
The finish on these shadows is pretty consistent throughout the range of shades. I'd say 85% of the colors here have a satin finish, while some of the shades have a touch more shimmer and complexity to them. None of these shades are matte, and none contain sparkle either.
For a buck a piece, I'm very happy with these trios so far. I can't comment on their staying power yet because I haven't fully put them to the test, but I have a feeling they'll perform as well (if not better) than the shades in my 6-pans and 12-pans because the texture seems to be the same. In fact, they might perform better since the pigmentation level seems to be higher in these trios. If you're already an LA Colors fan, I think you might love these.
Have you spotted these new trios at your Dollar Tree yet? My pal @nenabuggy on Twitter spotted some at her local Dollar Tree, so I know they're out there. By the way, @nenabuggy told me she's heard good things about these trios on other blogs, but I have yet to check out other reviews. Have you see other bloggers rave about these?
I saw these at my DT the other day and was wondering if they would be good. I really like the mineral singles, but some of them got broken when we moved. :( Now I might run over there and get these. They're fairly pigmented for $1.
ReplyDeletei picked up three of these palettes about two weeks ago. i got grassy knoll, shooting stars, and moon rock. haven't tried them out yet, though.
ReplyDeleteI also picked up some of these last week. Got Grassy Knol, Sand Dune, and Shooting Stars. I love them all! You are right, they are so pigmented. I think there are six total, so I might have to go back and get the others!
ReplyDeleteI picked up the trios. I believe there are eight in all, luckily my DT had all of them. When i first saw them I only picked up four because I wasn't sure whether I would like them or not. But i ended up going back for the rest and for backups of the the others. They are such pretty colors and the pigmentation is great for a dollar I couldn't resist. I am so in love and the employees at my DT, think i'm insane but thats ok.
ReplyDeleteGrassy Knoll and Sand Dune look right up my alley. I'll have to check my Dollar Tree for 'em soon!
ReplyDeleteAhhh you took the words right out of my mouth. I saw Grassy Knoll & thought Dallas? ;( Well anywho, these look awesome! I really like the 5 pan ones. So I'm definitley going to pick these up! (:
ReplyDeleteI grabbed two of these at my local DT-- Sand Dune and Southern Belle (blue, teal, and purple). I went back two days later to pick up a few more and they were all gone :(
ReplyDeleteI originally bought one trio in Boardwalk and was so impressed I went back the next day to get the other trios but they were all sold out except for Tiki Punch which, of course, I got. I had to go to another Dollar Tree to find the other 6 trios and I bought them all :D
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a chance to use all of them yet but based on swatches I'm really impressed by the color payoff and quality. They're a steal at $1 each!
I LOVE these shadows! The only trio I am missing is the Grassy Knolls and I will be checking every week until my collection is complete. It's an OCD thing. Anyway, they last all day with a primer, the browns are
ReplyDeleteawesome and the palette with the pinks Tiki Punch is my favorite!Boardwalk is a close second. I have high end shadows that don't come close!! For a dollar...a no brainer!
Gosh im gonna have to check out my DT to see if they carry these. Is anyone on here located in NC? If the one in my town doesnt have them i will check the next town cause they have a huge dollar tree and they have 2 stores and my town only has 1. I would love to see what tiki punch looks like. I love pink!!!I hope they r not sold out of these.
ReplyDeleteOh no - I MUST have all 3 (so it's FABULOUS that they're cheap)! I'm on a green kick right now, so these fit right in ... and I'm LOVING the blue in Sand Dune! Hopefully I can find them here; I don't have Dollar Tree stores. =S
ReplyDeleteAshwillis83 - I've seen these trios in DTs around the Raleigh area - I didn't pick them up, but may have to go back! I don't recall seeing all 8 choices though (Grassy Knoll stands out in my memory - the colors were tempting, but the name was a turn-off!)
ReplyDeleteI am rushing to Dollar Tree now~hahaha~gorgeous colors!
ReplyDeleteWow, those are gorgeous considering they only cost a dollar! You guys get all the best deals, I'm jealous! x
ReplyDeleteI've seen LA Colors Eyeshadows at my local Dollar Tree, but have always passed them since I thought they wouldn't be pigmented nor have a nice texture. After reading your review & seeing your swatches, I'm definitely gonna try some! Thanks!

Im mad i went to 2 dollar trees and neither one had these cause I had to go to the next town to take something back to kmart. I guess ill try the dollar tree in my town but they usually dont have alot.
ReplyDelete@CBBgreen thanks for the info maybe the dollar trees in my area havent started carrying these yet. Im gonna check mine tonight and see if they have them. Maybe the 2 i went to today were just already sold out. I asked a worker at 1 of the stores and she said she didnt recall them carrying them. But who knows. Wish me luck that my DT has them. I really want Tiki Punch and Shooting Stars and Lemon Grove. Gosh i have the worst luck:-(
Oh G. You tease and tempt us with such goodies. I had my heart set on the Maybelline LT pallette but now I am loving the look of these for spring and summer. I didnt see them in my Dollar Tree. Dont know if that is a good thing or not! Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI went to the Dt in my area and they didnt have these either. Does anyone know if these are limited edition. The worker at DT said that she thought they had them in a couple weeks ago but she didnt know if they would be getting them back in or not hopefully these are not LE and they will get some more in stock soon. They just had the 6 and 12 pans out and i got eye candy in the 6 pan. My dollar general always has the 5 pan ones and they are realy pigmented too. I might have to see if the 5 pans have any similar colors to the 3 pans.
ReplyDeleteJust to let yall know that I find L.A. Colors not only at my Dollar Tree but at Dollar General and Food Lion. I'm not sure if either of those are a country-wide thing but good luck if it is. They might be more than a dollar there but if you really want them, then it might still be worth it.
ReplyDeleteI spotted these a couple weeks back at a nearby DT and had to scoop up all 8 of them! VERY pleased with the pigmentation and the color combinations!
