New L'Oreal products!

My wonderful reader Jamie and her lovely daughter Elissa were at Walmart the other day and spotted some brand spankin' new L'Oreal products! A HUGE thanks to them both for sending over some pics (and to Elissa for taking them!). I'm ridiculously excited about some of these so let's get right to it:

image credit: Elissa for Nouveau Cheap
L'Oreal Double Extend Eye Illuminator (retail: $9.97)

According to Jamie, this product has mascara on one end, and then on the other end, the wand is sort of like the Telescopic Explosion wand, only with reflective pearl particles to "illuminate" your lashes. Sounds interesting!

image credit: Elissa for Nouveau Cheap
L'Oreal Infallible Le Rouge Lip Color (retail: $8.97)

I can never get enough long-wear lipsticks, and these colors look so pretty, don't they?

image credit: Elissa for Nouveau Cheap
L'Oreal Magic Smooth Souffle (retail: $13.97)

A new mousse-like foundation! I wonder how this will compare to Maybelline Dream Mousse?

image credit: Elissa for Nouveau Cheap
L'Oreal The One Sweep Eye Shadow (retail: around $8)

Now this is the one I'm the MOST curious about. Three shadows, with a very large wand applicator (I'm not sure but I think it's a sponge). Apparently what you do is swipe the applicator in a downward motion against all three colors in the compact, and then when you apply it to your eye, you sweep across your eye. I have some doubts about how the color is supposed to transfer and make it looks like Eva Longoria's eyeshadow in the display, but hey, I'm willing to give it a whirl!

So, what you do you think of these new L'Oreal goodies? Anything catching your eye? I'd love to hear from you, and thanks again to Jamie and her lovely daughter Elissa for the great scoop!

Breaking Beauty News! The Hard Candy Holiday Sets (pic heavy)

I literally cannot thank my lovely Twitter follower, Rachel (@ahimsa), enough for this one. Rachel, I'm sending you virtual bear hugs and kisses right now as I write this!

Rachel snapped some amazing and incredibly detailed pics of the Hard Candy holiday sets the other day and um, WOW! I don't want to waste any time, so let's get right to 'em!

All of the following sets can be purchased at Walmart. You can enlarge each photo by clicking once and then again to magnify.

Once more, thank you, Rachel!!

4 Pack Flavored Lipgloss Rings (retail: $5)

Limited Edition Nail Color Library (retail:  $10)
(Look how cute those zipper rings are! According to Rachel, these are full-size bottles of polish and the top left looks somewhat like HC Lava, while the bottom right polish looks like Fabuluxe.)

5 Piece Plumping Serum Set (retail: $10)

 Lash Stash
5 Piece Mini Mascara Set with Eyelash Curler
(retail: $10)

 Totally Smoked

(Rachel said this looks like HC's version of UD Book of Shadows but in a mini version! I love how there's a "magic well" to hold your water if you want to use these shadows wet.)

Hall of Fame Train Case
(retail: $20)
(The minute I saw this, before I read what Rachel wrote about it, I immediately thought of the Wet n Wild Train Cases that are at CVS. And then sure enough, Rachel said the same thing! They really do look similar, don't they? Well, except for the actual products and price! Click here if you'd like to see the Wet n Wild train case.)

Whew! So, what do you think? Any must-haves here? Or maybe you already found these sets and have purchased a few things? Either way, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Spotted at Dollar Tree, Marshalls, TJ Maxx and Ross

If you've been reading my blog for the past week, you know that I've been working furiously to compile this list. The most important thing I'd like you to take away from reading this is that there are TONS of great beauty products currently surfacing at dollar stores and discount stores right now, so get out there and see what you can find!

I've compiled information and "sightings" submitted to me via comments, emails and tweets, and I want to apologize if I've forgotten to give anyone the credit they deserve. Sometimes multiple people submit similar info to me and it's hard to keep track. If you gave me the heads-up on anything in this post and I did not credit you, PLEASE leave a comment and let me know. I always love to give credit where credit is due!

If I have not included a sighting credit, it means that I spotted these products myself.

Let's start with DOLLAR TREE
(NOTE: all items mentioned below retail for $1)

e.l.f.

nail polishes
lipglosses
Therapeutic Conditioning Lip Balms

Glossies nail polishes, including the much-coveted Molten Metal (click here for pics)
Foil polishes
(sighting courtesy of multiple readers and I also spotted these myself)

Sally Hansen

I mentioned in this post that a lot of people (the first I heard from was my lovely reader Donna) have been spotting the Sally Hansen Nail Prism polishes lately, both the old bottle and the REALLY old bottle. When I went to a second Dollar Tree location in my area recently, I caved and bought some of the really old style Nail Prisms (the round, squat bottles) and I also found an older-style Xtreme Wear polish in Chocolate Nut:

A little tip: these two-packs are $1 each, so even though I only plan to wear one of the shades in some of the 2-packs I purchased, the second shade (see the pink Hard as Nails shades in two of these packs) is not going to go to waste! I am saving these to send in to Zoya the next time they run one of their Polish Exchanges, where you send in your old polishes and they send you bright, shiny new Zoya polishes. So just remember that if you plan to buy any of these 2-packs and you only want one of the colors in the pack!

And courtesy, again, of my lovely reader Donna, these Sally Hansen polishes have also recently been spotted at Dollar Tree:

Maximum Growths
Fire/Star Opals

Follow-up Friday

Wow! It has been waaaay too long since I've done a Follow-up Friday post! But I have recently found a new appreciation for a product that I previously gave a not-so-stellar review, so I'm here to follow up and let you know things have changed!

Back in the beginning of October, I posted this review, where I showed you how this concealer didn't really work for me in terms of concealing my under-eye darkness. Well, it still doesn't do a great job with my under-eye darkness, but when my lovely readers AffordableBeauty and Carolanne both left comments on my original post indicating that they use this concealer on other areas of their face with great success, I HAD to give it a try!

And guess what? It ROCKS! Well, I should say it rocks for every area of my face aside from under my eyes (for under my eyes, I still swear by Maybelline SuperStay). When AffordableBeauty said this product worked well for concealing the redness on her cheeks, I thought, "Wait. I have redness on my cheeks too--why didn't I try it for that?" I guess that when I'm testing concealers, I always go for the under-eye area first. If a product fails me there, I don't generally bother with trying it on another part of my face. BIG MISTAKE.

I LOVE this concealer for evening redness and concealing old acne scars on my face. I mean, I LOOOOVE it. It just glides on so smoothly, and it's literally effortless to apply with my fingers. A few quick swipes on my old acne scars and on the redness on my cheeks and I'm ready to apply my foundation is two seconds flat.

Now, I also listened to many of you who said you found this concealer drying. I would have to agree with you--it's probably not the best concealer for those of you with dry skin. But on my oil-slick-prone skin? It's a champ! Heck, it practically functions as a primer AND a concealer, and I find when I layer it with my beloved Physicians Formula Healthy Wear powder foundation, my face stays put for hours and hours with no need for touch-ups.

So if you have this concealer and it let you down in the under-eye department, try it on the rest of you face and see how it goes! And if you don't already own it, but you're searching for a good face concealer that applies quickly and really helps even out redness, I say give this one a shot. It's my new favorite product that I literally look forward to applying in the morning (and that means a lot since, well, who looks forward to applying their concealer, right?).

A huge thanks to Carolanne and AffordableBeauty for leaving those extremely helpful comments on my original post. And I also want to thank anyone who has ever left a comment on one of my reviews--you have no idea how much your insights and opinions help not just me, but all of us. One little comment or suggestion can help us to see a product in a completely different light! This is exactly what happened with Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer for me. It truly went from a zero to a hero!

"Could you please stick to blogging about cheap stuff?"

It's been a while since a comment I received on this blog compelled me to write an entire post in response, but this one deserves to be mentioned.

On my most recent post about the Mad Men-inspired nail polish, I received this comment from a reader who goes by the name "Roseanne".

Roseanne writes:

Could you please stick to blogging about cheap (as in inexpensive) stuff? $14.00 for any nail polish is expensive and for a mini bottle is even less of a good deal. As to how great they are, just because something's named after a TV show doesn't make it good. Bumpy nail polish? I can make any n/p bumpy with cheap glitter on top or in between coats -- Wet n Wild Kaleidescope.

Dear Roseanne:

A lot of people tell me I should just delete comments like yours when I receive them. Why bother? I mean, you probably won't return to this blog to even read my response, but if you do, I'd like you to actually read what I have to say about your comment, and I welcome your response.

First of all, in response to your question: "Could you please stick to blogging about cheap (as in inexpensive) stuff?" Wow. It takes a lot of nerve to come to someone's blog and try to dictate what they should write about. How about this? Why don't you start your own blog, work tirelessly, for FREE, about something you're passionate about, and I'll come to YOUR blog and leave YOU comments telling you that you what you're doing is wrong and you should stick to something else.

This is MY blog, and I choose what to write about. If you took a minute to look around and read my mission statement at the top of my blog, you'd see that I usually write about products that retail for under $20. This polish is well within the limits I've set out for myself, and in fact I was just informed that the polish in question actually comes in a 0.5 oz bottle for $14, not .25 as previously mentioned. So, $14 for a bottle of polish that's the same size as a Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polish isn't too bad if you're a fan of the show and you're drawn to the shades (more on THAT in a bit).

And in case you don't know this, there are MANY, and I do mean MANY polishes that retail for over $14 that are quite popular in the beauty community. NARS polishes retail for $16 a bottle, and some Deborah Lippmann polishes retail for $20 a bottle. And you know what? I'll be reviewing a Deborah Lippmann polish in the very near future, so you won't like that either!

The most ironic thing about this is that, on the rare occasion I do review a product here that is classified as "high-end", I am almost apologetic for doing so. I generally like to stick to my budget-beauty theme, but every once in a while a particular product impresses me and I choose to share it with my readers. And every time I do step out of my "box" and review something more expensive, I usually get very nice comments from readers telling me that they LIKE the occasional high-end product review from me, and that it's a nice change of pace every once in a while.

So as much as you'd like me to take your "advice", I think I'm doing an OK job running this blog and deciding on its content. In fact, the last time I asked my lovely readers what they'd like to see from Nouveau Cheap in the future, the overwhelming response was: "Please just write about what you love." So, you see, if you were actually a reader of this blog, you'd probably feel like a real jerk for leaving that comment. You really have no idea how open I am to suggestions and input--just not mean-spirited input.

And as for the second part of you comment: "As to how great they are, just because something's named after a TV show doesn't make it good. Bumpy nail polish? I can make any n/p bumpy with cheap glitter on top or in between coats -- Wet n Wild Kaleidescope."

First of all, as I stated in the original post, the polish isn't "named after a TV show." If you read my post, you'd see that the costume designer for Mad Men created these colors based on 60s-era fabrics that were used for cocktail dresses in that period. There is a HUGE difference there, than say, calling a silver polish "Roger Sterling Silver" named after the Mad Men character Roger Sterling (although I might actually get a chuckle out of that). These polishes were inspired by vintage fabrics, which I think is a lovely idea. And I truly love how Janie Bryant translated the fabrics into polishes--especially the "bumpy" gold polish. I think it's kind of unique to capture the graininess of gold lame and be able to wear that texture on my nails. BUT, that's just my opinion. Nobody's making you buy that polish (or any product for that matter). If you don't like this collection, so be it.

But please don't come here and try to belittle anyone who is a fan of the show who may be excited by this collection. I'm sorry you don't like it, but I don't appreciate your implication that I'm only raving about this collection because it's "named after a show". As I stated earlier, it's NOT named after show. But even though it's inspired by the fabrics used on this TV show, this does NOT mean I'm automatically going to give it mindless praise. If you were a longtime reader of this blog, you'd know that when I praise something, I MEAN IT. I don't praise products lightly, and when I don't like something, I tell you exactly why I don't like it as well.

Best of luck to you on your journey to find another blog that "sticks" to what you like to read. I have a feeling you won't be back, which is OK. No hard feelings--I hope you find the perfect blog that meets your needs.

Best,
Gianna

The Mad Men-inspired nail lacquer collection has landed!

As many of you know, AMC's Mad Men is my absolute favorite show on television. So back in July, when I mentioned here that a collection of Mad Men-inspired polishes were on the way to CVS Beauty 360 and Duane Reade stores this fall, I could hardly contain myself! Especially when I read that Janie Bryant, Mad Men's costume designer, was partnering with Nailtini to create four lacquer shades inspired by the fabrics used in 60s-era cocktail dresses (think velvets, satins and lamés). Oooh la la! The potential was enough to have me pre-swooning (yep, I just made up a word).

So ladies and gentlemen, I am honored to present to you the entire Nailtini Janie Bryant Limited Edition Lacquer Collection, which was sent to me recently for review:

Just like the television show, these polishes unleash their power slowly and steadily, until BOOM! Before you know it, you're absolutely obsessed. There's a beauty to these polishes that really creeps up on you, and I have to say that the fabric-to-polish translation is truly brilliant. Let's take a closer look:

Nailtini Janie Bryant Limited Edition Nail Lacquers
(retail: $14 each, .5 oz)

UPDATE: I had originally written that these bottles were .25 oz, because that's the size I received for this review. Since then, a lovely reader emailed me to let me know that she purchased Stinger at Duane Reade and it was 0.5 oz for $14. So please forgive me--the full-size bottle is $14 for 0.5 oz (the same size as a Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure bottle).

Let's start with French 75:

The true beauty of French 75 is its texture. If you've ever felt a vintage piece of gold lamé in your hands, you know that there's a bumpy, almost rough feel to it. The brilliance in French 75 is that it perfectly captures the texture of the fabric, but in polish form! From a distance it looks like liquid gold on the nails, but once you get closer, you see the interesting texture that mimics real gold lamé. This polish applied quite easily with two coats for total opacity, and I think it's one of the most unique colors I've ever seen. Be sure to enlarge the above pics so you can really see what's going on in the bottle. Stunning!

Next, we have Deauville:

Deauville, aka the "lady of the French coast", is probably one of the most prestigious and elegant seaside resorts in the world. Think James Bond, Coco Chanel, high-stakes casinos, horse racing, sailing, and other activities never mentioned on this blog. Ha! So when I think of Deauville, I think opulence. And there's no more opulent a nail color, really, than pure silver. According to the Nailtini website, "Deauville drapes nails in sparkling, white-hot liquid platinum". I would absolutely agree with this. I swear to you, this is the most streak-free metallic foil polish I have ever used. The formula is pure perfection. I mean, look at it! It looks like my nails are wrapped in smooth aluminum foil, right? No brush stokes, and only two coats for complete opacity.

Next, we have Bourbon Satin:

Let's not mince words here. Bourbon Satin is mind-blowing. I have never seen a polish that mimics the look of satin quite like this. But guess what? It also mimics the look of actual bourbon whiskey. Look closely at the above pics and I think you'll see the swirls of amber in the bottle. This absolutely reminds me of what bourbon looks like when it's being poured into a glass (which then leads me to think of Don Draper, and oh you Don Draper, always invading my thoughts!). Anyway, I tried to show you Bourbon Satin in three forms of lighting so that you can really see the richness and depth of this shade. In person it's even more amazing, and it doesn't stop there. The formula! This polish applies like buttah. It's smooth and just effortlessly covers my nails with one coat--I really didn't need a second coat, but I applied one anyway. I think this may be my favorite shade of the collection.

And last but not least, we have Stinger:

As is always the case with dark duochromes (or multi-chromes) this polish was difficult for me to photograph accurately. So please know that there's much more to this polish than what you see in these pictures. The Nailtini site describes Stinger accordingly: "Like a peacock's finest plume, this shimmering shade wraps nails in black spiked with iridescent hints of blue, green, red and purple." I absolutely agree with this description because, depending on the lighting, Stinger can look blue, purple, green or red. But all the while, it stays connected to its black base. On my hands, it never looks like a plain black polish though--there's always something going on with it, but that something keeps changing. I absolutely adore this complex shade and I have a feeling it's going to be the runaway hit of the collection.

In fact, the day after I painted my nails with Stinger I had to bust out my camera in different lighting just to try once more to capture the duochrome effect of this polish. By the way, Stinger applies like buttah, and you only need one coat for opacity, though I used two for these pics.

So here are some of my "second round" shots of Stinger:

Do you see the purple on the left side of my nails?

In this pic, the green really comes out

I hope this review has helped you to determine whether or not you'd like to invest in one (or more) of these new Mad Men-inspired nail lacquers. For $14 per bottle, they're a little more than what most of us are used to spending on a polish, but I think that their unique qualities completely justify the splurge. And if you're a Mad Men fan, well, you need these. Period.

You can purchase the Nailtini Janie Bryant Limited Edition Lacquer Collection online here, and I believe this collection will aso debut at CVS Beauty 360 and Duane Reade locations this month.

Are you a Mad Men fan? What do you think of this new collection? Any must-haves that are jumping out at you? I'd love to hear from you!

My Five Minute Eye Look

Every girl's got a "five minute eye look", right? You know, the look you bust out when you're running late, you don't need to impress anyone, and you just need to wear something to get you through the day? Well I don't know about you, but my five-minute-eye-look tends to change a few times a year. I think I'd go crazy if I used the exact same shadow and liner every single time I'm running late, so I'd like to show you my current five minute eye look, which I'm loving right now.

Products used (I've included links to my reviews if I've actually reviewed these products on my blog):

Maybelline SuperStay concealer in Light
Physicians Formula Healthy Wear SPF50 Powder Foundation in Translucent Medium
Maybelline Define-A-Brow pencil in Dark Blonde
Jesse's Girl Eyeshadow Primer
Wet n Wild Color Icon eyeshadow single in Nutty
Wet n Wild Color Icon pencil eyeliner in Charcoal
CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion Mascara in Very Black

And that's it! I seriously only need one eyeshadow color to do this look, because Nutty is just so gorgeous to use as a wash, applied from lash line to crease and blended upward, I find that I don't need a crease color. I haven't actually reviewed Nutty on this blog--I have no idea why--but I love it and I can think of two great reviews right off the top of my head if you'd like more info on this shade: Joeybunny did a great review here, and Yuliya did an awesome review here.

So, what's your current five minute eye look? Leave a comment and let me know! I'd love to hear all about it!

Odds 'n' Ends

My Reader's Pick poll is now up (see right-hand sidebar)! Thanks to ALL of you for weighing in on your favorite releases this year. I narrowed the choices down based on the answers I heard over and over from all of you, and I think it's going to be very interesting to see which of the seven products wins! They're listed in alphabetical order by brand, so be sure to read through the entire list before you cast your vote. And thank you in advance for voting!

Coupon Alert! Huge thanks to the lovely Hebridean Sprite for this one: there's a $1 Revlon Nail Polish coupon in the November issue of Glamour Magazine! In fact, Hebridean Sprite even sent me some very helpful pics of the mag and the coupon so we all know what to look for (and look at her adorable mani!):

Huge thanks go out to Lisa over at Drugstore Divas for the heads-up on some CVS coupons that are currently printing out at the scanner box and/or on receipts! I mentioned earlier that everyone is getting the $3 off $15 beauty purchase coupon this week, but Lisa also got a $3 off any Revlon coupon (which would pair nicely with the Glamour coupon I just mentioned) and a $7 off any Lumene Vitamin C product. Lisa snagged herself a free lotion using that coupon, because the coupon applies to minis as well! So get on over to CVS and scan your card and see what you get! And thanks again, Lisa, for the heads-up!

That's it for now, but please stay tuned because I'm still working on that Dollar Tree and Marshalls post--it's a big one and you don't want to miss it if you shop at either of those stores!

The Wednesday Question

This week's question is a two-part question, and I'm very curious to see your answers!

How often do you use a face primer, and which brand is your favorite?

Even though I love the look of my makeup after I use a face primer, I seem to forget to use one (or I'm just plain lazy). I would say I use face primer about 3-4 times a month. And my favorite brand of all time is the Black Radiance face primer, which I reviewed a while back. So how about you? Do you use face primer? If so, how often, and what brand do you use?

Adventures in Etsy-land: One Hand Washes the Other review!

It's been a looong time since I've done an Adventures in Etsy-land post, but I'm so excited to bring this feature back because, if you haven't already heard of this Etsy seller, I want to introduce you to One Hand Washes the Other (or OHWTO for short).

I'll freely admit that I'm a bath and body product junkie. If it smells good, looks good and feels good on my skin, it's all over. I MUST have it. I had been following OHWTO on Twitter for a while now, and had always meant to ask the lovely lady behind the name if she wanted to work together on a review of some of her products. So recently I reached out to her and she kindly sent me a package of yummy samples, which I'm going to review for you in a bit.

But before I begin, I want to encourage you to take a look around OHWTO's Etsy shop. The lovely gothic and old-world-inspired packaging, combined with exquisitely made perfume oils, solid perfumes, lip balms, lip tints, whipped sugar scrubs and vegan-friendly soaps are a feast for the eyes (especially those soaps--they are stunning!). Plus, OHWTO's prices are very reasonable with low shipping fees to boot. If you're a lover of hand-made bath and body products, I'm pretty sure you're going to be tempted by these goodies.

And now, on to my review:

As you can see, I was sent a nice assortment of sample-size Solid Scents to try. You can tell by the names that a lot of these are seasonal, which I found terrific because I adore fall scents! I've tested every one of these fragrances and I can confirm that they all have great intensity and staying power on my skin. I sincerely adore them all (Kettle Corn is so realistic I was tempted to eat it!), but the two real stand-outs for me personally are Pomegranate & Oak and Pumpkin Eater.

Note: this is a sample-size solid scent. The full-size product comes in an oval-shaped twist-up tube that you can see here.

To my nose, Pomegranate & Oak is heavier on the pomegranate, but the addition of the oak note really helps to take away the sharpness that many traditional pomegranate scents tend to have. It's warm, sweet and a little bit earthy, and I honestly cannot stop sniffing my wrists when I wear it.

Pumpkin Eater is not a traditional pumpkin scent by any means. I honestly expected to smell that generic, spicy pumpkin fragrance when I opened the lid, but boy was I pleasantly surprised to find a more complex and mature pumpkin-based fragrance! According to OHWTO's Esty listing, this fragrance "smells of mangled pumpkin flesh, tilled earth, and a dash of spiced cider, haunted by an apparition of patchouli." I also pick up a creamy note in this fragrance as well. Whatever it is I'm smelling, all I know is that it's amazing and it's my new favorite scent for fall.

Next up, I received a soap sample:

I'm very impressed that even OHWTO's samples are gorgeous. Look at the color and shimmer to this soap! According to OHWTO's blog, Big Daddy is "an intoxicating blend of Tobacco Blossom, Mandarin, Honey, Rose [and] Caramel..." I would have to agree completely. It's a masculine scent, but it's not headache-inducing and when I used it to wash my hands, I enjoyed the scent that it left behind., and Mr. G went bananas for it. Oh, and by the way, the vegan-friendly formula of this soap is wonderful. I get a nice, rich lather, and it rinses away easily to leave squeaky-clean skin behind.

And finally, we have the Blueberry Lip Butter:

Oooh la la! I love anything blueberry-scented and this is certainly no exception. But not only does this have a yummy blueberry fragrance and flavor, it's one of the creamiest balms I've tried in quite some time. It glides on the lips so effortlessly! And I love that it's packed with all sorts of moisturizing oils. This one's a definite keeper.

I am so delighted with everything I've tried so far from OHWTO. Now the only question is, what do I try next?

Have you purchase anything from OHWTO? If so, what are some of your favorites? I'd love to hear from you!
