"Could you please stick to blogging about cheap stuff?"

It's been a while since a comment I received on this blog compelled me to write an entire post in response, but this one deserves to be mentioned.

On my most recent post about the Mad Men-inspired nail polish, I received this comment from a reader who goes by the name "Roseanne".

Roseanne writes:

Could you please stick to blogging about cheap (as in inexpensive) stuff? $14.00 for any nail polish is expensive and for a mini bottle is even less of a good deal. As to how great they are, just because something's named after a TV show doesn't make it good. Bumpy nail polish? I can make any n/p bumpy with cheap glitter on top or in between coats -- Wet n Wild Kaleidescope.

Dear Roseanne:

A lot of people tell me I should just delete comments like yours when I receive them. Why bother? I mean, you probably won't return to this blog to even read my response, but if you do, I'd like you to actually read what I have to say about your comment, and I welcome your response.

First of all, in response to your question: "Could you please stick to blogging about cheap (as in inexpensive) stuff?" Wow. It takes a lot of nerve to come to someone's blog and try to dictate what they should write about. How about this? Why don't you start your own blog, work tirelessly, for FREE, about something you're passionate about, and I'll come to YOUR blog and leave YOU comments telling you that you what you're doing is wrong and you should stick to something else.

This is MY blog, and I choose what to write about. If you took a minute to look around and read my mission statement at the top of my blog, you'd see that I usually write about products that retail for under $20. This polish is well within the limits I've set out for myself, and in fact I was just informed that the polish in question actually comes in a 0.5 oz bottle for $14, not .25 as previously mentioned. So, $14 for a bottle of polish that's the same size as a Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polish isn't too bad if you're a fan of the show and you're drawn to the shades (more on THAT in a bit).

And in case you don't know this, there are MANY, and I do mean MANY polishes that retail for over $14 that are quite popular in the beauty community. NARS polishes retail for $16 a bottle, and some Deborah Lippmann polishes retail for $20 a bottle. And you know what? I'll be reviewing a Deborah Lippmann polish in the very near future, so you won't like that either!

The most ironic thing about this is that, on the rare occasion I do review a product here that is classified as "high-end", I am almost apologetic for doing so. I generally like to stick to my budget-beauty theme, but every once in a while a particular product impresses me and I choose to share it with my readers. And every time I do step out of my "box" and review something more expensive, I usually get very nice comments from readers telling me that they LIKE the occasional high-end product review from me, and that it's a nice change of pace every once in a while.

So as much as you'd like me to take your "advice", I think I'm doing an OK job running this blog and deciding on its content. In fact, the last time I asked my lovely readers what they'd like to see from Nouveau Cheap in the future, the overwhelming response was: "Please just write about what you love." So, you see, if you were actually a reader of this blog, you'd probably feel like a real jerk for leaving that comment. You really have no idea how open I am to suggestions and input--just not mean-spirited input.

And as for the second part of you comment: "As to how great they are, just because something's named after a TV show doesn't make it good. Bumpy nail polish? I can make any n/p bumpy with cheap glitter on top or in between coats -- Wet n Wild Kaleidescope."

First of all, as I stated in the original post, the polish isn't "named after a TV show." If you read my post, you'd see that the costume designer for Mad Men created these colors based on 60s-era fabrics that were used for cocktail dresses in that period. There is a HUGE difference there, than say, calling a silver polish "Roger Sterling Silver" named after the Mad Men character Roger Sterling (although I might actually get a chuckle out of that). These polishes were inspired by vintage fabrics, which I think is a lovely idea. And I truly love how Janie Bryant translated the fabrics into polishes--especially the "bumpy" gold polish. I think it's kind of unique to capture the graininess of gold lame and be able to wear that texture on my nails. BUT, that's just my opinion. Nobody's making you buy that polish (or any product for that matter). If you don't like this collection, so be it.

But please don't come here and try to belittle anyone who is a fan of the show who may be excited by this collection. I'm sorry you don't like it, but I don't appreciate your implication that I'm only raving about this collection because it's "named after a show". As I stated earlier, it's NOT named after show. But even though it's inspired by the fabrics used on this TV show, this does NOT mean I'm automatically going to give it mindless praise. If you were a longtime reader of this blog, you'd know that when I praise something, I MEAN IT. I don't praise products lightly, and when I don't like something, I tell you exactly why I don't like it as well.

Best of luck to you on your journey to find another blog that "sticks" to what you like to read. I have a feeling you won't be back, which is OK. No hard feelings--I hope you find the perfect blog that meets your needs.

Best,
Gianna

  1. Lovely response!
I totally agree with everything your said and think you do a great job reviewing inexpensive (under $20) products.
You have nothing to apologize for.
Please don't let her negativity get to you :)

  2. Well played. This is your house. I like the look of it and I'll be back! (I'm honored to be your guest...thank you for having me...)

  3. So so so funny!

One person's concept of cheap is always going to be different than someone else's. Heck, my personal idea of cheap, or too expensive, changes with the changing of my financial situation on any given month.

I want to see what all of my fabulous makeup and polish options are, not just what some whiny commenter feels is appropriate.

    G. you rock, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

  4. Damn, now I totally want a np called Roger Sterling Silver...I think it would have to be infused with vodka or something though.

  5. Yeah, well I go out and get one of these Nailtinis and next thing you know, the mortgage isn't getting paid, the bank is foreclosing, and I'm out on my tush! You and your money-squandering, free-wheeling, jet-setting, high-rolling ways are going to be the ruin of us all!

  6. I recently found your blog and I have loved every single one of your posts! You are very good at what you are doing and people like to belittle other's success and intelligence because they are jealous and insecure! Your response was right on spot and I salute you for standing up for who you are and for what you do!
    Keep the excellent work! :)

  7. G that was well played. Normally I would say ignore the haters but I gotta hand it to you, you handled that with rather gracefully. As always keep doing what u do. Cheap is in the eye of the beholder.

  8. I've just recently found your blog and love it, but this is my first time commenting. Although I personally won't spend 14 bucks for a nailpolish, I have enjoyed your random posts here and there about products that I wouldn't have come across because they aren't on my money radar. So I would say keep on doing what you're doing. For every one person that complains, there are so many others that have enjoyed what you had to say.

Also, I wanted to add that I think a possible dupe of the Deauville color is LA Colors Color Craze in Live which I got at Dollar Tree.

  13. chatdurouge, live is the blingyest silver out there. I love that one!

jbrobeck, Deborah Lippmann, isn't that those run of the mill bumpy sorts? Rubbish!

M, that was my first thought. I was just, you have got to be kidding. You could scroll back 100 posts and there is no budget busters here, it's all bargains! One post is about a little more expensive product! One! Sheesh!

  16. Am I the only one who sympathize with her? Based on that, she doesn't sound like a hater or like someone who wants to dictate anything. I don't think her comment is a total failure and maybe she just misunderstood what you mean by "cheap". $14 or even $20 is fine for a foundation but a bit expensive for a nail polish, I think. I personally wouldn't pay. Maybe you took it all too seriously? Unfortunate misunderstandings..

  17. Love the way you handled that comment! It's very true what you said about this being YOUR blog. You write out of your own effort. Nobody has the right to tell you what you should and should not write. Besides, I believe readers are fully equipped to make their own decisions. If they're not happy reading something then don't read it! I think you're doing a great job with this blog's theme by offering the masses an insight into good yet affordable products. To let them know that there are alternatives out there. But I'm very sure that it has nothing to do with being a cheapo rather it's about being savvy. Whether one can afford high end products or not, it's up to the person to determine if something's worth it. If you end up buying something expensive but you love it and/or it works in a way that can't be substituted by something cheaper, what's the crime in that? In fact, to take risks into trying out products that may not work like the "original" will eventually add up. Being a smart shopper means to put personal value on something regardless of its monetary price.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Personally, I like you throwing in a couple more expensive products, especially if you can dupe them with inexpensive ones (though that's a pain in the neck and a lot more work than it seems as I've discovered). Even if they are no true dupes you'd be able to compare formulas and brushes and application issues between all brands, cheap and expensive. The best is when someone reviews an expensive brand and says it's not worth it or something at the drugstore is better for a quarter of the money.

  21. Roseanne, this is G's blog. Not yours. Get your own and write about what you want to write about. Or are you too friggin' lazy to dedicate you own free time, and sometimes money, to do so and instead rather b*tch about the occasional $14 product review?

Perfect example of how common sense and seeing the obvious isn't so common anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very nice response G! You can write about whatever you want as it if YOUR blog and no one should even have the nerve to try to dictate what you write about! I think we can all tell how much work and love you put into this blog and I really appreciate it! This is my absolute favorite blog and I read it more than daily :)

  23. Thifa, I think paying $8 for Borghese or SH Salon is too much, so yeah, I get that. But she isn't just saying that this is out of her budget, or that it's ridiculously overpriced, these would simply be her opinions, which she is entitled to. Instead, she's telling G that she shouldn't blog about it. Like Jennifer said, I think of a blog as someone's home. None of us have the right to tell G what to do here. We can make polite suggestions, and G has always encouraged that, but this wasn't a suggestion or polite. Those last remarks are pretty snide and rude, saying that G is so silly she doesn't know good quality but is simply caught up in Mad Men hype. That's just insulting in my opinion. Those are my reasons why I'm not sympathetic to Roseanne and understand G's response.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, some people are unbelievable!

Every day I wonder what happened to common sense and personal responsibility. I wouldn't pay $14 for one nail polish, but that doesn't mean that I don't like reading about them! And even if I did, I would just skip over the post, I wouldn't leave rude, hater comments!

IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING, DON'T LOOK AT IT. DUH.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Huge kudos to you for having the patience to deal with comments like this. I subscribe to a lot of blogs, but yours is in my top 3. I love it not only because I very often agree with your opinions on what you review, but because you are always so considerate of your readers and trying to make them happy. Keep on doing what you do, EXACTLY how you do it, girl. Your true fans love you! P.S. I picked up Stinger the other day, and it's sickkkk. Your swatch made me want to go back for the silver shade, too! *Hugs*

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great response, I honestly don't see what the big deal was about your review anyway. If you don't won't to spend the money, then don't spend it. It's really very simple.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm a frequent reader but first time commenter. I LOVE THIS POST. It's your blog and you should definitely write about whatever compels you. My blog focuses on high-end mostly and for the occasional times I write about something from the drugstore I get comments that say "faint! what?! drugstore?!" Even more, I get e-mails that say stick to HE stuff.

You handled this comment so well. Some readers have no manners. For the record I think $14 for a nail polish is cheap. Granted, a $14 nail polish from Target or Walmart wouldn't be considered cheap, but you catch my drift.

Anyhow KUDOS to you. This brought a big hooray smile to my face reading how you stood up for yourself. I look forward to your Lippmann review too!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Some people just can't handle netiquette. :/

I'm just kind of amused that it's almost a backhand compliment... YES G. YOU HAVE SPECIAL POWERS TO MAKE US BUY THINGS WE DON'T WANT BY SHEER POWER OF REVIEW ALONE. [glassy-eyed zombieface]

    @Thifa:

$14 or even $20 is fine for a foundation but a bit expensive for a nail polish, I think. I personally wouldn't pay.

Right, but you didn't make this comment, even though you also thought it was too expensive. Probably because you knew it'd be gauche. XD

I don't think Roseanne was trying to be a hater, but what she said was thoughtless, rude, and pointless. It's the principle of the thing, right? There are a million ways to comment on how expensive something, but for some reason, she felt the need to direct it at what G does as opposed to the product itself.

The nature of a review blog is to see whether the writer thinks the product is worth the price. Obviously, if you don't like something to begin with, then don't buy it. There's no need to tell G what she should or shouldn't review and, even worse, what she should or shouldn't like. To suggest that she's only pushing the polishes because she's a Mad Men fan belittles the amount of effort G puts into keeping NC running and indirectly suggests that she's not being honest with her readers. That's pretty much the worst thing you can say to any blogger, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Expensive or cheap I read your blog because I trust your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Unfortunate comment. Personally I hope she erred on the side of thoughtlessness and not assholeness. I'm a frequenter of the former and have some empathy with those who put their foot in their mouths when not genuinely meaning to be a jerk.

Regardless, your response is respectful and direct and addressed entirely valid points. Your blog is awesome and you are the queen of your castle. Rock on with your bad self! As a reader from the very beginning I can say you're one of 2 blogs I check daily and over the past year and a half you've only improved. You demonstrate appreciation for your readers on a daily basis and I think we're all lucky to have you here sharing all that you do. Quite simply, Yay you.

  32. Oh and as to whether a $14 nail polish is considered "expensive" or not- that's not even the point!!! This whole thing was because an insensitive "reader" decided she had the right to tell G what to write about in HER OWN blog! It's incredibly rude and insensitive. I don't really care whether she meant it to be mean or not- she should just know that that is not within her rights to tell G what she needs to "stick to" writing about. Again G, very well said!

    ReplyDelete
  33. ITA her comment was rude! I love this blog and I hope you don't change a thing!!!

I have to admit that i love your blog for your variety of reviews. do not listen to what haters say. just keep doing what you love.

  35. *eyeroll*

Let's just say for the moment that whether a $14 polish is considered expensive is the point. Who determines that? I've been a reader/commenter since May and I distinctly recall G saying on several occasions that she reviews products that are $20 or less. Is $14 less than $20? Why yes, it is!

I guess Roseanne will have to find another blogger who only reviews $10 or less since she objects to these extravagant $14 -$20 products.

  36. prettybottles: I'm going to assume you're not a regular reader of this blog. If you were, you're know that of the 1,256 posts I've written, about THREE of them have been mildly negative in nature. To say you're "just so sick of reading negative posts on makeup blogs" is fine, but please note that my blog is not generally negative in nature. But even I have my limits. When someone insults my creditability by saying that "just because something's named after a tv show doesn't make it great", I'm standing up for myself, and it's my right to make that public.

She was insinuating that I wrote a great review just because these are Mad Men polishes, and I won't stand for that. As for you feeling "embarrassed" for me and my post? Wow. There are a lot of things to feel embarrassed about in this world, and I'm sorry this post, of all things, makes you feel embarrassed.

If you don't like what I have to say, please just move on to the next blog. There are a million out there and if what I write is "weird and unnecessary" to you, then all you have to do is stop reading it.

As a blogger, I'M the one who is sad here. I'd think that since you yourself have a blog, you'd have a better understanding of how it feels to pour your heart and soul out every day and try to bring the best content you can to your readers. I wouldn't dare leave a comment on a fellow blogger's blog telling them something they wrote was "sad" and "weird and unnecessary." That's just plain insulting, and by putting in the "I do enjoy reading your blog though" part at the end, as if that somehow makes up for, just comes across as patronizing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thifa: I can see your point, and if her comment had JUST been "please stick to blogging about cheap stuff" then I could have let that go (although I would be a little irritated by someone trying to tell me what I can and cannot write about). But where this comment crossed the line was the insinuation that I only wrote a positive review because this was a Mad Men-related polish. THAT type of remark is something I do not take lightly, and that's why I had to stand up for myself. I hope that clears this up. :)

PS: Thank you so much, Donna, for defending me--I agree completely with what you said.

  39. I want to personally thank everyone who left a supportive or encouraging comment on this post. I know I always say that my readers are the best, but I truly mean it. I knew that my taking a stand and writing this post, I'd be opening myself up to criticism (mission accomplished!) but to see so many of you, my regular readers, come out and say you understand what I was trying to say, and WHY I said it, means you GET me. And the fact that you get me, or at least understand why I felt the need to stand up for myself in this situation, means more to me than you will EVER know. I love you guys. I really do. Thanks so much.

  40. I'm really glad you reviewed those polishes! I've yet to run into any other blog who has even mentioned them, and I'm pretty interested in picking Bourbon Satin, it's beautiful!!

I agree with your stance on your blog, I once had a personal friend of mine do that on my personal blog and was outraged at her audacity.

Keep up the good work, your blog is the first one I check every day!

    ReplyDelete
  41. prettybottles: Maybe I missed something here, because I'm just not understanding how saying you're embarrassed by the length of my post, and that what I wrote was weird, unnecessary and sad is helpful?

I actually find it comical that you're implying I don't welcome anything but "nice" comments on this blog. You've got a lot of nerve making that judgment about me, considering you haven't been reading my blog for that long, and you have no background as to the types of conversations my readers and I have had on this very blog.

As long as what is written is thoughtful and actually helps the discussion, I have ALWAYS welcomed criticism with open arms. Which is specifically why I did not delete the original comment (or yours, for that matter). No one's claiming that you don't have the write to speak your mind, but on MY blog, I won't tolerate negativity that doesn't lend something meaningful to the conversation. Is telling me my blog post was too long and defensive actually HELPING this conversation? I think that's really just speaking your mind, but it's not being mindful. There's a big difference there.

  43. I come to this blog mainly for the nail polish posts, and am excited that you reviewed the Nailtini polishes! Since there is a Beauty 360 next door to my local CVS, I do consider this a "cheap" review. I can do my savings at CVS that I read about on your blog, and use my savings to pick up a treat like these polishes. I appreciate your blog and all that you do!

  44. I have bookmarked so many beauty blogs, I actually had to make a folder for them. I read beauty blogs from every corner of the World (thank you Google Chrome for translate!)

From high end to low end, I love them all. And with that being said, G, yours has fast tracked to the top of the list. I love your writing style, and especially love the fact that you speak your mind. I find that so refreshing from the norm. And it shows that you are passionate about life!

I think you have done a wonderful job showcasing many brands that other bloggers would turn their freshly powdered noses at, and reminded countless that some really great finds lurk right down the street for many.

Like I said, I love my high end splurges just as much as my drugstore scores. But every once in a while a girl just needs a splurge, something out of the norm, and something that says "I am so worth it!" No matter what a person deems too much for a worthy splurge, there is truly no reason to trash on someone for posting about one.

I am going to give the benefit of the doubt to Roseanne, perhaps it was a poorly constructed thought on her part, perhaps she actually was trying to convey this product is not for her.

Or as the saying goes "Opinions are like BLEEP, everyone has one" ;)

G, keep doing what you are doing, you are you.. and that my dear is fanfriggentastic!

    ReplyDelete
  45. G., it was a great review, as usual--nevermind Roseanne and her sour grapes. $14 nail polish is expensive to a cheapo like me, but it's so gorgeous that I'm willing to splurge.
And I now I want "Roger Sterling Silver" LOL . I'm so obsessed with Mad Men, that it's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Fudge that crazy biotch! I love coming to your blog for all the cheapie stuff and sales infos and reviews and vintage vault! But, just like my own makeup stash is a mix of high-end and low-end (the high-end usually being the result of a fantastic sale - but not always), I like that your blog mixes it up too. That madmen post is one of my favorites in recent memory! Only because I'd seen them mentioned somewhere else and didn't know anything else about them. Now I'm tempted! Not tempted enough to buy them (goddamn I've got a lot of nail polish, some of it hasn't even been used!), but maybe one day...

Anyway, my ramblings were just my way of saying "You're ok in my book, kid" (or whatever, imagine an old man voice...not that I'm an old man, but still, imagine it anyway) and f the haters. You ever watch any of Kat William's standup? He talks about the haters. Everybody's got 'em, and having them lets you know you're doing something right. Just don't let them get under your skin and you keep being awesome. :)

  47. prettybottles: WOW! Well, you just admitted that you weren't being helpful in your original comment, or the comments thereafter, so...point proven! You seem to have a really authoritative air in your speech, and propensity for making grand, sweeping statements such as when you say that the original commenter's comment wasn't offensive. To me, and many people reading this blog, it was offensive--how can an implication that I only wrote a good review for a product because it was named after a tv show NOT be offensive?

As for your comment about "like attracts like" please don't try to put that back onto me. My conversation with you began when you came here and threw around words like "weird" "unnecessary" and "sad" in regard to my original post. Those types of words don't help ANYONE, and now I'm the one who is feeling "embarrassed" for attempting to be rational in debating this topic with you.

Best of luck to you on your blogging journey, and have a nice day!

    ReplyDelete
  48. G,
I have no idea why you're getting all this crap! It's your blog, you do what you want with it! I think most of the people who leave ridiculous comments like prettybottles & Rosannes aren't "followers" or long time readers of NouveauCheap so they assume you're blog is dedicated to affordable and cheap beauty products. Little do they know, you specialize in some higher end products. I personally find it comforting when you write about ex. Korres because it means you must REALLY love it to share it with us. I get it, most of us aren't made of money so they look for alternatives but why be rude to the one person who helps a majority of the time?? I love reading your Weekly Deal posts and guess what, I can't even take advantage of those deals because I'm in Canada! I hate how certain people take those posts for granted. Those posts are sticking to "cheap" stuff! I mean, you could always share 20% off discount codes and sample codes for websites of NARS, Sephora, Korres, BE but you DON'T because you set a beauty budget for blog and yourself! Why don't these people see that??
I am also tired of all the negativity on blogs but excuse us, we're not the ones who started it. It's the rude, insensitive, speak-before-they-think commenters that get to us.
G, aside from all this, I hope you have a great day!

  50. a. i enjoy how this post arguing about the validity of a post has gotten about 5 times more comments.

    b. i am tremendously confused on how anyone could be exhausted by debating something like nail polish.

    c. and thats the point. it's makeup kids. we're not curing aids or conducting world diplomacy. we're talking about how to be pretty pretty girls without blowing the bank.

g, i can totally understand why you were offended by the original commenter's insinuation that you were promoting something that is out of the league of most of your readership because you are nothing but a maniacal fangirl.
however, it seems that we are WAY past that now. now we are aruging semantics, over who has a right to be offended when. which no one will ever ever ever agree on.

    ReplyDelete
  51. that said, although i would not pay $14 for a bottle of nail polish, and have never seen an episode of mad men, i really love that they are based on the costumes and fabrics. and i might ask santa claus for that green-y one. :)

  52. yeah it's ridic, i'm deleting my comments. at this point, no one will understand the others point of view and that's fine! *i meant exhausted because i keep feeling like i must explain things that G isn't getting, or is putting words in my mouth. that's always exhausting.

  53. Great response, everyone has a choice to either read a blog post or move on. I love your blog whether or not you stick to the 'cheap' stuff. And if you have pricey things that you have and think we might like then share, it's your blog, your money, your time.
My blog is on beauty and science (the science of beauty products) but I don't have anything on that yet, just hauls because that's what I want to share at the moment.
Keep up the good work. And ever since you showed the new WnW holiday palettes I've been on the hunt and can't find them yet :(

  54. Oh Gianna, I first want to start off by saying, "can i get a amen?!?!" lol. Geez, the nerve of her!! I can only imagine how you feel. Though I've only been a reader of yours for about 4 or 5 months, i know how much time and effort you take when posting a new product/review/post. The process is lenghthy, meaning, you take the time to read our comments about fabulous finds, go out to the store, take pictures of the product in the store, purchase the item, take countless swatches of the product from all different aspects of lighting, try the product out for a while in order give a proper review, and devote a lot of time into writing your actual thoughts, and most importatnly, you're honest! WOW! That was a mouth full! That girl is hella trippin'! I agree with you 110%, this is your blog, and you have the right to decide what content goes into it. You know what amazes me the most? It's nice that even though she made thoughtless comments like that, you managed to stay so humble and let her know that you have no hard feelings. That right there, makes you a great blogger. =) Anywhos, don't let this girl upset you even more than she already has. Keep doing what you're doing cuz you're doing a great job! Thanks again for all that you do!

  55. Paybacks are a bitch! How utterly funny that Gianna fell right into the trap of being defensive about a negative review from someone who is obviously (to her) not a longtime reader. "prettybottles" also got creamed for leaving her point of view which doesn't agree with G and came to my defense. Why do you invite comments and then rag on the poster if you don't agree with them? Because you're hoping to make a lot of friends online to bolster your ego while you whine and complain about how hard you work on this blog for no pay? Poor G. Yes, I will stop reading your blog now. I had sent you a nice email about having found your blog and how much I enjoyed it, but you didn't respond to it, probably because I'm not one of your online clique friends. Have a nice life. Signed, Rosanne.

  56. There are few blogs that I enjoy more than this one. I think what you do is amazing, insightful and takes a lot of dedication. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but sometimes it takes a little class to see what is appropriate and what isn't. It's unfortunate that some classless people ran across your blog with their muddy footprints. All I can say is THANK YOU for doing this everyday and please please don't let them stop you! YOU ROCK

  57. Nice response. I like your blog. It makes me actually appreciate drugstore makeup better...

So keep doing what you're doing! You're great at it!

  58. G, Thanks for deleting my response. Only proves my point.

  59. Roseanne: When did I delete your response?? This is the first and only comment I've seen from you since your initial comment! If you had responded, I would have loved to have read it, and would have left it up for the world to see.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is the last time I'll bug you, I promise haha. I just want to clarify that I still stand by my original comment because it was my true opinion. I AM sorry it caused hurt feelings, and I do regret feeding the fire by continuing to post. There was no need for me to try and further explain anything. none of us actually know each other and it's sad (there's that word again heehee) to make final judgements of each other based on a few comments. I've said it twice already but I enjoy reading this blog.. Just not posts like this.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Roseanne: Apologies to you--I did NOT delete your comment, it got automatically put into my spam folder because of your curse word. I just published your comment because I'm happy for the world to see it.

As for this "payback" you refer to, I don't see it as any form of retribution. I stood up for myself against your accusations, and I continue to do so when people leave negative comments on this blog that are NOT constructive or helpful to anyone.

It's funny that neither you nor prettybottles seem to want to discuss the fact that your original comment insinuated that I only reviewed that product positively because I like the TV show. THAT is what I take offense to and I have every right to defend myself on my own blog.

It's hilarious that you seem to be under the impression that I'm trying to "bolster my ego." You have no idea who I am, and clearly you have no idea why I write this blog.

I'm sorry that I didn't respond to the email you sent me--I haven't responded to several emails sent to me over the past year but it's not for lack of trying. I'm one person and I do what I can. Perhaps I don't respond to all emails in a timely manner because I don't like to settle for a "Thanks so much, Love, G." response. When I respond to emails, I try my best do it thoughtfully and that takes TIME. So again, I'm sorry you didn't get a response from me in a timely manner.

I'd just like to you to know that I have never, or will ever, discourage opposing thoughts or ideas on this blog. Longtime readers will tell you this has always been my wish and the type of environment I've tried to maintain. But name-calling and accusations? There's NO place for that here.

PS: And there's no clique here. If there were, it would be a pretty HUGE clique since I love all of my readers. My readers are why I write this blog, and comments from you will never make me lose sight of that. I'm very sorry that you're so angry.

    ReplyDelete
  62. prettybottles: No hurt feelings here--I'm just not one to back down when I feel put into a corner. But like theetinygoat said, it's a case where clearly we could continue to go back and forth about this, and what's the point? At the end of the day, it looks like neither of us is going to come around to the other's point of view, so let's just agree to disagree and call it night.

  63. Love you. Love your blog! The naysayer can leave her drama to her momma! Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Ah it was never my intention to make you feel that way. It was just my opinion and I wasn't thinking of how it might actually make you feel. I really don't know why I thought it would go unnoticed. Now that my name has been dirtied by Internet drama, let's all chill out together while painting our nails and watch mad men.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You go girl! (: Like 95% of your blog posts are cheap products do I don't why she has a stick up her butt about the one higher end post. It's your blog and you do what you want. (: <3

    ReplyDelete
  66. <3 Oh G! You have every right to write what ever the heck it is you want, about any product you want. You're the one spending hundreds, if not thousands of hours of your time!
I also am glad you handled this the way you did, good for you!

PS: This has nothing to do with the post, but I made out like a bandit today. Pro beauty store had a grab bag sale and you wouldn't believe what I ended up with!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I AM cheap! LOL & just like it took me a minute to ease into using higher end brands of makeup on occassion, the same can be said of NP. I'm working my way there. I do very much appreciate you're having taken the time to explain the concept, photograph, swatch & share with us. Even if I am only able to buy 1 of these polishes. (& let's admit I'd love to have them ALL!) LOL I wouldn't have known about it were it not for you! So thank you for your time.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I get so tired of people commenting on blogs and telling the blogger what they should write about or what camera they should use. There's a YouTube girl I watch and every vid she gets about a million, "You should buy an HD camera. This camera is not as good as other vlogger's cameras," comments. I can't believe the insinuation that you would review something positively because it's associated with a show you watch. Maybe if you were a 10 year old girl reviewing Twilight nail polish, but you have always been honest and forthcoming and that is a ridiculous accusation.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well who ever that is, really hasn't looked into expensive nail polishes. I have some great news for her, there is a nail polish company "i do" they have a Platinum nail polish made with platinum for $55,00 if you want their "affordable" nail polish you are looking at $250 a bottle. so she can take her comment and shove it where ever she likes

    ReplyDelete
  70. just thought i'd throw this in here... love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  71. People are overreacting here. The Mad Men-inspired nail polishes were SENT to Gianna for free, and she lists this fact in her disclaimer. If Gianna had purchased them with her own money, I'm SURE she would have waited for a sale or stacked coupons to bring the price down to the best bargain possible, and then shared it with us! I've been a follower of Nouveau Cheap for a very long time now and so I've witnessed this blog's progression into popularity. As the readership increased, obviously different brands are going to try and advertise their products by sending bloggers samples, in hopes that the bloggers end up liking them and writing positive reviews. Yes, Gianna tested out expensive nail polishes (compared to drugstore brands) and posted a review about them. Big deal. She's not forcing you to buy them.

With that said, I can understand in a way where Roseanne is coming from. I'm a huge fan of affordable beauty products, and I think what was meant to be a simple request for more reviews on cheaper items came off as a bratty command on "how to run your blog", as so many commenters put it. Gianna, I love you lots and I love how classy you are (remember your pulled-together response to that commenter in your CVS Beauty Clearance Sale post?), but I feel that your harsh reply this time could have been toned down a notch. I personally assume that Roseanne is a young pre-teen or teen who's on a tight budget and getting used to online blogging etiquette for the first time.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Gianna, I want to say that you've handled this gracefully. I love your blog, and always look forward to seeing what products you're sharing.

  73. Thanks again to everyone who left a comment since the last time I commented here. I really, truly appreciate your support. It means the world to me!

Kitty: thank you for the very thoughtful and insightful comment. This is one time though, where I'm going to have to politely disagree with you, only because I wasn't just responding to a "bratty command", I was ALSO responding to the implication that I only gave this collection a positive review because it was based on a TV show that I love. THAT is where I really take issue, because it puts my integrity into question. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from and, again, I thank you for taking the time to share your opinions here with us. Oh, and I also want to sincerely thank you for being a longtime reader and supporter of this blog as well--I can't believe you even remembered that CVS drama! Ha! :)

  74. Hi Gianna,

I'm a reader, not really a commenter of your blog, but I just wanted to tell you that as someone who usually does buy the higher end cosmetics, I do enjoy reading your blog to find dupes or new things to try out in the drugstore...and because of the article in question that stirred up all this controversy, I would have never of known of those GORGEOUS Mad Men nailtini polishes. Kudos on an awesome blog!

  75. Gianna,
Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I love all your info on beauty supplies. I can tell how important your blog is to you and how sincere you are about it. It's too bad about the negative comments people leave. They probably don't follow your blog enough to know anything about it. Keep up the excellant work! I look forward to reading your blog each day! Thank you

  76. I would totally buy Roger Sterling Silver...

  77. Good polish isn't cheap in most cases. I've come across tons of polishes from all kinds of brands. Drugstore polish doesn't work for me, and I prefer those that last at least 5 days. She could have just color matched with a brand she considered "cheap enough".

    ReplyDelete
  78. Girl you are the best! that's why I keep coming back for more! Have a great weekend. xoxo

  79. I don't want to fan the flames of drama, but Roseanne's comments to this post are quite rude! I started reading NC very recently and immediately found G to be a nice person interested in hearing from everyone, even someone (me) she had never interacted with before. There are plenty of snobby bloggers who seem to regard their readers as minions who ought to take their every word as law and immediately rush to their defense at the slightest hint of someone disagreeing with them; G is about as far from that as you'll find!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I agree with everything you said Gianna. You work hard on your site and loving what you write about is way more important. Stepping out of the box should never be an issue :)

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think you are absolutely right about this being your blog and you should have total control over it. We, the readers, are utterly appreciative of your efforts for reviewing tons of products that ultimately make us better consumers. That comment was more than likely posted without giving much thought as to how it will affect you. Keep up the good job.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow, on so many levels. Mostly teenygoat has nailed it best.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I do NOT think her response was too harsh, and teenager or not, new to "blogging etiquette" or not, rude is rude.

And to say it is a "request for cheaper items" is ridiculous because, HELLO, most of the reviews are for cheaper items.

If you don't like the content of a blog post, don't read it.

To leave comments like Roseanne did is just obnoxious. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Hi Gianna,

You handled this with class and style, much better than I would have.

Don't let this negative nellie get to you. Like others have said, I totally appreciate all you do to keep us in the know. You are one of my favorite blogs,

This idiot obviously is looking to biotch and moan. Don't mind her.

    xoxoxo

    Keep up the good work.

  86. You go girl. I love your blog, and regularly come here for tips. I like to see the occasional high end review. :D

    ReplyDelete
  87. G, don't take any of this personally. I think mean spiteful people take your kindness for weakness and just see a someone they think they can take advantage of. Good for you for sticking up yourself. I understand why you got upset, questioning someone's integrity is one of the most insulting things to do.

I love your blog and read it religiously because of your refreshing attitude and honesty. You genuinely seem like a great human being and reading your blog is a real pleasure.

  88. Yikes! Crazy stuff here. Just wanted to say that I love reading whatever you review...even if it was the most expensive polish in the world, I would still want to read about it because as "blog followers" we're, in a way, living vicariously through you and other bloggers. I take these reviews as helpful advice/a fun read whether or not I even consider buying that product. So by all means, review whatever you like. Review the fruit at your local supermarket! lol Its your blog! So do your thing G

  89. I love this post and I support this blog 100%! If I didnt like what you were doing with your corner of the internet, I just wouldn't visit, plain and simple. Geeze, people should use their time to do something constructive...
