Spotted: New CoverGirl Beauty Tools

It feels like it's been forever since I was last in a drugstore, since I've had a nasty cold for a few weeks now. I finally got to visit a CVS recently and I found this display for the CoverGirl Beauty Tools. I haven't heard a word about these, so I'm not sure how new they are--if you've spotted them in your area, please leave a comment and let me know!

The display contains four rows of products:

Top two rows:

Bottom two rows:

As you can see, there are a variety of tweezers, scissors, clippers and files in this collection, and even an eyelash curler that comes with a spoolie.

One thing I find interesting is that each pair of scissors comes with its own sharpener, and there is a coupon good for $1 off any CoverGirl cosmetic product on each package.

As far as nail files go, there is a sapphire file (the one with the green handle) and a ceramic file (pink) in this collection. Also, to the right of the ceramic file is a set of hair cutting shears!

Another thing I like is that some of the products have this cool multichrome finish to them.

The prices range from $3.29 for the sapphire nail file to $14.99 for the hair shears. These definitely look like they're in direct competition to the new Sally Hansen tools I showed you last month.

What do you think of these new beauty tools from CoverGirl? Would you give them a try? Do you already own any of them? I'd love to hear from you!

Review: New Bath & Body Works Carried Away Fragrance Mist

I'd like to start out this review by telling you some very good news! My dear friend Yuliya told me last week that the I LUV BBW Club (which I blogged about here) is going to be available for registration again THIS MAY! So those of you who were upset about missing this opportunity to get FREE stuff from BBW every month are going to have another opportunity to join in a few months! Set a reminder on your phone for May 1st (that's what I plan to do, so that I can remind you of this opportunity when it comes back around). If the registration starts earlier than May 1st, I'll blog about it as soon as I find out.

So this month's freebie for I LUV BBW Club members is your choice of one travel size body mist, one travel size lotion and one travel size shower gel. The best part is that you don't have to choose all three products in the same scent! I picked my freebies up last Thursday (I'll be blogging about them soon) but when I was making my purchase I saw these near the register and I couldn't resist the price, which is currently $2 for a 3 oz bottle:

Bath & Body Works Fragrance Mist in Carried Away
(retail: $5 but currently on promotion near the
registers at BBW stores for $2, 3 oz)

The newest fragrance from BBW, Carried Away is described on the BBW site as:

...a whimsical blend of lush raspberries, white jasmine and whipped vanilla inspired by the way love sweeps you off your feet.
  • Fragrance Top Notes: Italian Bergamot, Meyer Lemon, Mandarin, Juicy Pear Nectar, Lush Raspberries
  • Fragrance Mid Notes: Purple Freesia, White Tuberose, White Jasmine, Soft Violet Petals
  • Fragrance Base Notes: Creamy Sandalwood, Whipped Vanilla, Musk

Since the bottle in my photos is a promotional, travel-size bottle, it does not contain the pretty floral packaging of the Carried Away line. Definitely click here to see the pretty packaging of this fragrance.

In perfume-speak, the top notes of a fragrance are generally the notes you smell upon initial application. They're the notes that seem to burst forward upon first sniff. Well, I'm delighted to say that I actually do get a burst of all five top notes when I first apply this fragrance! I can really smell the citrus, the peach and the fresh raspberry notes.

Middle notes are basically the heart of the fragrance, and they're what you generally smell once the top notes have settled or faded away. When it comes to Carried Away, the middles notes of this fragrance are strong, intense floral notes and I can definitely smell them once the fizzy top notes have faded. Tuberose is such a dominant fragrance, so when I saw that tuberose was a middle note in this fragrance I was scared that it would dominate the other notes. I'm happy to report that's not the case, as I can definitely detect the freesia in Carried Away. In fact, I'd say freesia is the most dominant note in this fragrance (to my nose, of course).

Base notes are basically the notes you will probably smell on your skin about 30 minutes to an hour after application. Base notes are the deep, rich anchor of a fragrance, and they tend to blend with the middle notes and remain on your skin long after the top notes have faded. Since the base notes of Carried Away are creamy sandalwood, whipped vanilla and musk, they lend a creaminess to the overall fragrance and what lingers on my skin is a sweet, rich, creamy floral type of fragrance.

To my nose, Carried Away is first and foremost a floral fragrance. If you like freesia, you will probably love this fragrance. My best description of Carried Away would be that it's a sweet, creamy freesia-based floral with very subtle effervescent notes of citrus and berry. I think that it would be considered heavy or maybe even cloying for those who tend to shy away from floral-based fragrances, while others may find its combination of citrus, berry, freesia and cream an absolute delight. It really all depends on your sniffer, as well as your body chemistry.

FINAL VERDICT: If you're a fan of freesia, I think you definitely ought to give this one a shot. If you generally gravitate toward rich, sweet fragrances that are a mixture of floral and berry notes, you will probably find Carried Away absolutely delightful. If you're more of a citrus lover or one who tends to gravitate toward clean, soapy types of fragrances, this one might be a tad too heavy for you. If you want to try it for yourself, I'd suggest getting to BBW right away to take advantage of the $2 promotion for this fragrance mist while it's still available.

Have you already tried this fragrance? If so, were you carried away by Carried Away? Do you think this sounds like a fragrance for you? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Nouveau Cheap readers have spoken! Your favorite drugstore lipstick brand is...

After over 2,000 votes, Nouveau Cheap readers have spoken! What's the most popular drugstore lipstick brand? Drum roll please....

The CLEAR winner with 756 votes is:

Revlon

Coming in second place with 376 votes:

Wet n Wild

Coming in third place with 315 votes:

Maybelline

Also earning a respectable number of votes:

Rimmel (222)
L'Oreal (171)

Rounding out the bottom were Almay with 14 votes and a tie for last place: Jane and Prestige with 10 votes each.

The result that surprised me the most? I was shocked to see 51 votes for Physicians Formula! In fact, when I noticed all the votes for PF coming in, it compelled me to purchase some of their lipsticks (during the CVS clearance) and now I understand the popularity--they're so smooth and creamy. I had never tried a PF lipstick before, so thanks to all of those who voted--your votes compelled me to give them a try and I'm glad I did!

Also, I want to apologize for something: I MADE A HUGE ERROR when I created this poll, and I only discovered my mistake several weeks into the poll. I inadvertently left NYC off this list! The horror! I personally love NYC lipsticks and I want to apologize for the oversight. Once votes have been cast on a poll, you cannot change or alter the poll itself, so I couldn't go back and add NYC since several hundred votes has already been cast when I discovered my error.

Looking at the number of you who voted "other" I'm wondering if your vote would have gone to NYC if it had been an option! If your vote would have gone to NYC for favorite drugstore lipstick brand, I'd love if you could leave a comment on this post and let me know (just for my own curiosity).

So, what do you think of the results of this poll? Did your favorite drugstore lipstick brand do as well as you thought it would do? Do you agree with results? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

PS: My new poll for favorite drugstore nail polish brand is now up and I'd LOVE it if you cast your vote! I was going to just include brands that can be found at drugstores, but I decided to open it up a bit and include brands that can be found at Target and/or Walmart as well, just to give you more options. As always, I'll run the poll for about a month and then I'll discuss the results here once the votes are in!

Weekly drugstore makeup sales, new printable beauty coupons and so much more!

I've got SO much great info to share with you today, so I hope you'll take a moment to read through this entire post--I don't want you to miss anything!

First and foremost, this week's drugstore sales are now up, courtesy of my pal Make-Up on the Cheap. Click here for the full list!

Next, who doesn't love FREE, right? Well this week at Walgreens, you can get a 3 oz tube of the new Veripur Hand Sanitizer (which promises 4 hours of protection from one use!) for $3.99 with $3.99 in Register Rewards. In other words, FREE!

There's a guaranteed instant coupon (meaning everyone should get it) this week at CVS for $3 off any $10 cosmetic purchase. All you have to do is scan your CVS card at the scanner box. This will come in SO handy with this next deal I'm about to tell you about!

Red Plum just posted some new printable coupons TODAY, which will pair nicely with this week's drugstore sales. Check THIS out:

And guess what? This week at CVS, spend $15 on any Maybelline Cosmetics and get $5 Extra Bucks!

There are a zillion possibilities for how you can use these coupons with this sale, but here's just one scenario I came up with:

Purchase Maybelline Pro XXL Mascara for $8.99 retail
Purchase Maybelline ColorSensational lipstick for $7.49 retail
total: $16.48
Receive $5 Extra Bucks for spending $15 on Maybelline
total: $11.48
Use CVS red scanner box coupon for $3 off $10 cosmetic purchase
total: $8.48
Use Red Plum $2 off mascara coupon and Red Plum $2 off lip color coupon
GRAND TOTAL BEFORE TAX: $4.48 FOR $16.48 WORTH OF PRODUCTS

Here are some other new Red Plum coupons that can pair nicely with some sales going on this week:

$2 off Garnier Nutrisse Hair Color, currently on sale at Walgreens for $5.
YOUR PRICE WITH COUPON: $3

$1 off any Garnier haircare product, currently on sale at Rite Aid for $2.99.
YOUR PRICE WITH COUPON: $1.99

Here's another scenario: At CVS this week, if you spend $20 on any combination of Garnier haircare, skincare and hair color, you get $10 back in Extra Bucks. So let's say you buy a shampoo, a hair color and a moisturizer (which would mean you could use three of the above coupons). You would get $15 off your total when you add the coupons and Extra Bucks together!

$2 off Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips, currently BOGO1/2OFF at Walgreens. I believe these retail for $9.99 each, so if you combine the sale and this coupon, you would get 2 for around $12.99 (full retail price for 2 would be $20).

And there are even MORE great printable coupons on Red Plum that I want you to know about:

$1 off any Nivea Body Lotion (I'd print this one and hold on to it because Nivea just released those new body lotions, which means they're bound to go on sale VERY soon)

And there are even MORE great deals going on this week:

As we all know by now, Essie is now being sold at Walmart, Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS. At Walgreens, Essie polishes retail for $7.99 and at CVS they retail for $8. Well, guess what? If you buy an Essie polish at CVS this week and you have your $3 off $10 cosmetic purchase from the red scanner box, all you'd have to do is purchase a $2 beauty item (maybe a few Wet n Wild products) and you've got a great little bargain on your hands!

As always, I have updated my picks for BEST DRUGSTORE DEALS OF THE WEEK, and if you have a minute, I would love if you'd scan through that post because there are a TON of great Extra Bucks/+UP Rewards/Register Rewards deals going on this week, and some of them are for NEW products that have just released.

Here are some examples:

I JUST saw an ad in US Magazine when I was the grocery store for the new Olay Body Care collections. These are so new that I cannot find ANY info about them online, except for the image that Wags has on their site promoting their deal this week. The ad I saw in US magazine said something about how there are three new fragrances, and that they're comparable to your favorite "bath and body shop". Hum...wonder what shop they're referring to? Ha ha! Anyway, the deal at Wags is that they're on sale for 3/$10 with $3 Register Rewards, making them 3/$7. There's a body wash, lotion and body massage bar for each fragrance.

Some more great deals on NEW products at Walgreens this week:
  • New Right Guard Total Defense 5 Body Wash $3.99 with $3 Register Rewards = $0.99
  • New Gillette Venus ProSkin Razor System $7.99 with $4 Register Rewards = $3.99
  • New Irish Spring Antiperspirant/Deodorant $2.99 with $2 Register Rewards = $0.99
Whew! That's it for now, but if you know of any other great deals going on this week at the drugstores, or any ideas you may have to maximize our savings using these new printable coupons, I'd LOVE to hear from you in the comments!

Review: CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balms in Spice and Cabernet

Of all the new CoverGirl products to release so far this year, the NatureLuxe Gloss Balms were the ones I was the most excited to try for myself. I was fortunate enough to receive two shades for review a few weeks ago, and now that I've had some time to fully test them, I'm excited to give you my detailed review.

CoverGirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balms in Spice and Cabernet
(retail: around $7 each, .076 oz)

Right off the bat, I want to let you know that I am a sucker for any type of packaging that's light green, seafoam green or mint green. I don't know why, but these shades always appeal to me. Add a bit of shimmer to the green, a cute botanical graphic and a clear lid? Well that's just enough to send me over the edge. I love love love the packaging of these lip colors.

I also want to address this since some of you expressed concerns about the tube: the lip product does NOT extend beyond the tube, folks! I know it's a pet peeve of so many of you when a stick extends beyond the tube, because it's so easy to nick the stick with your lid, etc., so rest assured, these do not do that! See:

In the above pics, I had already used Spice (left) twice, and you can see that after just one or two uses, the stick sits nicely inside the tube, eliminating all chance of you nicking the tube with the lid when you open or close this balm. Yay!

NatureLuxe Gloss Balms come in 16 shades (I've heard that some contain more shimmer than others, while others are matte, and I've also heard that some border on almost metallic, so I just want you to be aware that the finish can vary from shade to shade). According to the CG website, they contain mango and shea butter and provide "a luxurious, sheer color with a hint of shine". These balms are also SPF 15.

I have to say, I think CG's description of the texture of these balms is spot on. They really do provide a luxurious, sheer color with a hint of shine on my lips! Let's take a look.

In the below pics, I first wanted to show you my bare lips (which are very dry and chapped right now). I thought it was important to show you my bare lips first, so that you can really get an idea of how pigmented these Gloss Balms are, and also how they will look if YOUR lips are dry and chapped as well:

Color me impressed! I'm quite happy with the pigmentation and moisturization of these balms, and I LOVE how even though there is shimmer in both shades, it's not garish or over-the-top on my actual lips. Also, both shades are so much more wearable than I thought they'd be. Looking at Cabernet in the tube, it looked like it had the potential to go too pink for my skintone, or much too dark, but I found it to be neither. I adore sheer reds, and this one's just about perfect for my NC20 skin. It's not too warm, it's not too cool--it's really just right.

Spice is a sheer, warm, coppery-bronze but it doesn't veer into being too orange or too brown when I wear it. I LOVE pairing Spice with an earthtone eye and I find it looks great with my olive green shades as well as all of my rich bronzes and browns that I wear so often on my eyes.

The texture of this balm is quite light, yet I find it to be nice and emollient. It's not sticky, heavy, greasy or waxy on my lips--it feels almost weightless for a balm. It has really helped my dry, chapped lips, and I was pleasantly surprised that the pigmentation did not accentuate the dryness of my lips (don't you hate it when color sticks to dry flakes even after it has worn off the rest of your lips? Ew!).

I find the shine of this balm to be moderate (definitely not as shiny as a gloss, though shiner than other balms I own). The staying power is also impressive--it tends to last much longer (by a few hours!) on my lips that the new Burt's Bees tinted lip balm I showed you here.

There is a light fragrance to these balms, and to my nose it smells like a nondescript mixed-berry type of fragrance, with a little note of generic "lipstick" thrown in. I don't find it bothersome, and it fades very quickly for me. And there is really no discernible flavor to these balms--at least that I can detect.

If you're curious to know how Gloss Balms compare to CG Lip Slicks, I think Gloss Balms are lighter in texture, more moisturizing, go on a touch more smoothly, have better pigmentation and more shine. I was obsessed with Lip Slicks a few years back, but I always found that I had to go over and over my lips to get the pigmentation just right. This is definitely not the case with Gloss Balms--a few swipes and you should be good to go.

FINAL VERDICT: The $7 price tag may scare some of you off, but if you're looking for a moisturizing tinted lip balm that has a bit more shine than others, stronger pigmentation and wearable shades, CoverGirl NatureLuxe Lip Balms might be worth considering. As we all know, CoverGirl products go on sale quite frequently at the drugstore, and you can always find coupons for CG in the P&G insert in the Sunday paper, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get one of these for a good price. I am very impressed with both Spice and Cabernet, which I find extremely wearable and very emollient without being heavy, greasy or waxy. These are both great colors to keep in your purse at all times for when you need a quick dash of color when you're on the go. I think they're a sound investment if you gravitate toward sheer, wearable shades that require little to no maintenance, since I find that both shades wear off evenly (no ring-around-the-lips). The fragrance wears away quickly if you are fragrance-sensitive, and I find no discernible flavor to these balms. And of course, who doesn't love SPF 15 in a tinted lip balm, right?

Do you already own any NatureLuxe Gloss Balms? What do you think of them? If you don't own any, do you think they sound like they may be a good fit for your particular needs? I'd love to hear from you!

Review: Physicians Formula Happy Booster Glow & Mood Boosting Blush in Rose

It seems like it was so long ago that my pal Kimberly spotted the Physicians Formula Happy Booster collection and shared her pics with us, but in reality it was only one month ago! Boy how time flies, right?

By now, I'm sure you've seen reviews of this blush on several other blogs, but today I'd just like to chime in and give you my thoughts.

Physician Formula Happy Booster
Glow & Mood Boosting Blush in Rose
(retail: around $13, .24 oz)

I purchased this almost three weeks ago and I've been using it off and on ever since. As the box indicates, this is a "mood boosting blush", which means it's infused with natural plant extracts that mimic the effect of endorphins, thus creating a happy feeling when worn on the skin:

To further elevate your happiness, there is a "violet" scent to this blush, which I find just lovely. But honestly, I don't really get violet from it. To my nose, it's more of a soft floral rose blend--almost tea-rose, actually. But whatever it is, I find it actually does make me happy when I smell it, so mission accomplished, Physicians Formula!

Also, how can you NOT be happy when you look at this blush? I mean, really.

The pink! The hearts! The metallic red compact! This blush is overflowing with happiness! This might be purely psychological, but I swear I get in a better mood just holding this blush in my hands.

The compact itself is designed just like other PF compacts (product on top, mirror and applicator underneath). And the brush is just too cute with its pink and red bristles. Surprisingly, this brush looks like it's going to be quite rough when you first see it, but I've used it in a pinch a few times and I didn't find it rough or harsh at all.

The above pics were taken right after application (these pics were actually taken on the same day as the pics I took for my Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara review). As you can see, this blush gives a nice pinkish-rose glow to the skin, and there is some sparkle, shimmer and sheen to this blush as well. Some of the hearts contain more sparkle, while some hearts contain more shimmer/sheen. But when blended, I do want you to be aware that you will definitely see some shimmer on your cheeks. This is not a matte blush by any means. This isn't a super sparkly or shimmery blush (believe me, I've used blushes that contain far more sparkle and shimmer) but it is there, and I tried to capture it in these photos.

I found this blush to apply very easily (powder blushes are my favorite so I'm quite the critic) and it blends quite easily as well. The powder is finely milled and a cinch to work with. I absolutely love the texture.

One thing I DEFINITELY want to call to your attention is that, at first, I always think I haven't applied enough of this blush. It always feels like I can't quite see it on my cheeks, so I reach for more and start building the color. BUT THEN, it's like this blush slowly creeps up on you and BAM, it's so easy to over-do it! And once you layer on too much, it's difficult to soften it up (even applying some powder over the blush doesn't really diminish its intensity for me!).

So a word of caution: apply a small amount, and then wait a minute. You might be surprised to see that you've applied the perfect amount, even though it might not feel like it at first! Less is actually more with this product and, for me, it takes a minute or two for the color to really take effect. Resist the urge to build for more intensity, because you might apply too much and, since this blush is very pigmented, it's a challenge to tone down.

FINAL VERDICT: Whether or not this truly boosts your mood is up for you to decide. Even if the plant extracts don't work for you, there are still so many things about this blush that can put you in a happy mood, including the heart pattern, metallic red compact, pink and red brush, the soft floral fragrance, and the actual product itself. I love love love the pinkish-rose shade of Rose, and I find it extremely pigmented and easy to work with. All in all, I think this blush is pretty irresistible. I certainly would never talk you out of making a purchase (especially this week since there's a $3 off peelie on the box AND you get $7 back in Extra Bucks at CVS, AND you might get lucky and get the $3 Physicians Formula coupon from the red scanner box!). If you can take advantage of those three deals (or even one ore two of them), then this one has your name written all over it. Heck, I would purchase it for full price and I rarely, if ever, say that. Between this and all the other new PF products I've reviewed lately, I have to say that I'm QUITE impressed with their 2011 offerings so far.

Do you own anything from the Physicians Formula Happy Booster collection? If so, what do you think of these products? Do they increase your happiness a bit? Are you pleased with their performance? I'd love to hear from you!

Review: Covergirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation

I received this foundation for review several weeks ago, and I've been impatiently waiting to write this review. Sometimes I just fall in love with a product and I want to rave about it after one use but, of course, that would be going against my better judgment. So I waited, and tested, and tested this foundation for several weeks, just so that I could be 100% certain of my love affair. So now I can finally tell you exactly how I feel about it.

CoverGirl NatureLuxe Liquid Silk Foundation
(retail: around $10, 1 oz)

Before I get into this review, I want to mention that I posted a while back about a free sample on Walmart's website. For a few days it looked as though the sample was no longer available, but thanks to several of you who recently informed me about this, it appears that the free sample is BACK! Click here to get yours if you haven't already.

First and foremost, I make no secret that I am a powder foundation gal. In fact, you'll find very few liquid foundation reviews on this blog, because I just adore the way powder foundation works for my particular skin needs (I have oily skin and I prefer full coverage from my foundations). So I was a bit skeptical about the new CoverGirl NatureLuxe foundation because, as the tube indicates, this is a "silk foundation" which I normally equate with looking dewy, which then translates to "oil slick" after a few hours on my skin.

I received the shade Chamois 330 for review, which looked like it would be a tad too dark for my skintone. Chamois is the sixth shade in the range, and I usually tend to gravitate toward the second or third shade in a range for my NC20 skintone.

Before I get into the details about this foundation, here are some before-and-after shots taken of my cheek (for these photos, and for the entire time I've been testing this product, I applied NatureLuxe Silk Foundation the good ol' fashioned way: with my fingertips):

As you can see in the "before" shot, I have redness, enlarged pores and old acne scars to contend with (oh joy!). And in the middle pic, taken just after applying this foundation, you can see that Chamois is a bit too dark for my skin, but it's not unbearable by any means.

But what I really would like you to notice is that this foundation does not pool up in my cavernous pores--quite the contrary! I think it minimizes the appearance of my pores, and SURPRISE SURPRISE it also provides MUCH better coverage than I was anticipating! Can you see how my redness has all but disappeared in that second picture? I was literally stunned, because it usually takes a good application of concealer prior to my foundation to get rid of my redness and I used NO concealer at all in these photos.

For the third picture, I used a light dusting of CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Pressed Powder (click here for my review). I figured it would be nice to top off this foundation with another CoverGirl product, so since I purchased the Clean powder a while back and enjoyed it, I was hoping it would work with this foundation (I also noticed on Temptalia a few days ago that Sophia Vergara wore NatureLuxe foundation with Clean Oil Control Pressed Powder to the SAG Awards, and if my skin can look even remotely as flawless as hers, I'm willing to try just about anything. Ha!).

If you look at the third pic above, I hope you can see that by using the Clean Oil Control Pressed Powder in Buff Beige, it actually brought the overall shade of this foundation much closer to my true skin color. Score! It also managed to really set this foundation and keep it in place for a good 7-8 hours on my skin.

So here's why I am now in love with CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation and why it seriously challenges my beloved powder foundations: first, the texture. My goodness they are not lying when they say this is a silk foundation. The texture is so creamy, yet so light-as-air, and it blends like a dream on my face. It's like it just melts into my skin, while simultaneously covering my flaws, minimizing my pores and generally just making my skin look like a million bucks (well, to me, at least). And the best part is that it doesn't just sit on top of my skin--it's like it becomes one with my skin. AND, I cannot feel it on my face after it's blended. Yes, it's that light. But it somehow manages to conceal what needs to be concealed, yet it doesn't make me look like I'm wearing a mask. My skin still shows through underneath, but in a very natural, good way.

I've found that even in warmer weather, I only need a couple of touch-ups throughout the day to my oily t-zone. And when it's cold, I don't even need that--this foundation lasts all day and into the early evening on my oily skin, and that's a miracle for liquid foundation, which generally gets completely eaten by my skin by 2pm.

If I had to find fault with this product, I would say that the tube could be a bit larger for the price (1 oz for around $10 isn't exactly cheap by drugstore standards) BUT, I've found that I really only need a small dab on each cheek, one on my forehead and one on my chin per application, and even less if I use concealer beforehand.

One of the reasons I adore powder foundation is the ease of use--a few swipes and I'm done. But let me tell you, I've used NatureLuxe on days when I've been in a hurry, and it's one of the few foundations I can use and SKIP my concealer step and still feel fairly confident when I walk out of the house. Granted, I hate skipping concealer and I rarely do it, but if I had to (i.e. I overslept and am seriously, ridiculously late for work) I could do it by using just NatureLuxe and a bit of setting powder and I'd be comfortable enough to function for the day. THAT is something I could never do with most of the liquid foundations I own.

FINAL VERDICT: I simply cannot think of a skin type that wouldn't be a good match for this product. It's light enough for tinted moisturizer lovers, yet it's got enough coverage for full-coverage foundation gals like myself. I don't foresee this being drying for dry-skinned gals, yet it works beautifully on my oil-slick of a face. The texture is that of a high-end, $75 foundation (I've never owned a $75 foundation but I've used samples!), so even though you're only getting 1 oz for around $10, I think you might love this so much that you'll gladly pay that amount. The look of my skin, the weightless quality of the product (I literally cannot feel it on my face after application), the blendability and the ease of use are all top notch in my book. There is a fragrance to this foundation, but to my nose it sort of smells like a softer, lighter version of old-school Noxzema and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I just wanted to mention that in case you're sensitive to fragrance. This one's a winner for me, folks. I say grab your free sample and give it a shot!

Do you already own CoverGirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundation? What do you think of it? Does it work as well for you as it does for me? If you don't own it, are you tempted to try it? Will you be signing up for the free sample? I'd love to hear from you!

My lovely reader Sabrina emailed me about this on Monday (huge thanks, Sabrina!) but I am still so behind on my email that I didn't get a chance to post about it until today (boo!). I'm sorry for the last-minute reminder, but for those of you who are members of HauteLook (a member-only shopping site but if you apply for membership, which is free, you are usually approved within the same day) I want you to know that there's an NYX sale going on RIGHT NOW!

Click here to visit HauteLook.com and check out the sale for yourself (you have to be logged in to view the sale).

Thanks again, Sabrina, for the heads-up!

Review: Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara

Exactly one month ago I showed you the display for this new mascara and I told you that I purchased it for review. Well, one month later and I'm here to give you my detailed thoughts about it, so let's get started!

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara
in Ultra Black Organics
(retail: $9.95, .26 oz)

As you can see, there are "Try Me Free" peelies on this mascara, so definitely take advantage of that mail-in rebate if you decide to make a purchase (I got mine at Rite Aid but if you can get this at CVS this week and you spend $10 on Physicians Formula, you'll get $7 back in Extra Bucks!).

As indicated on the Physicians Formula website and on the packaging below, the ingredients in this product are 100% natural origin and 47% of the ingredients are from organic farming.

As the little green sidebar above indicates, this is pretty much free of anything controversial, including parabens, GMOs, synthetic fragrance,  synthetic color and synthetic preservatives. It's also 100% cruelty-free and Ecocert certified organic.

The chart above compares traditional mascaras, containing synthetic ingredients, to this 100% natural origin mascara.

All of the great ingredients aside, I think this mascara just looks cool. I love that it's shaped like a giant leaf!

As you can see, this product lives up to its name and it really does have a "jumbo" brush.

In the above pics, I compared this brush to the CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion brush, just so that you can get an idea as to its shape and size. The wand length is about the same as the CG mascara, and surprisingly enough, I do NOT find the handle hard to hold or work with in the slightest. On the contrary, I find this wand quite easy to hold, and I like the way it fits in my fingers when I'm using it.

Clearly the biggest difference here is the shape of the actual brush. Both brushes are rubber (or is  it rubberized plastic? I'm never sure) but as you can see, the shape of the Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara brush is wider in the middle and it's slightly tapered on each end.

The shape of the brush works QUITE well to distribute mascara onto my lashes. I find that I don't need to keep brushing and brushing in order to get the product onto my lashes--a few strokes is all it takes, and I love that. My only complain is that I wish the end of the brush were a little more narrow, which would make it much easier to coat both my outer lashes and also my lower lashes. I find the wide end to be a bit bulky and hard to work with, but after a month of using this mascara and getting past the learning curve, I'm MUCH better at application and it doesn't bother me nearly as much.

But now on to why I LOVE THIS MASCARA.  First of all, you know a mascara is working for you when you have to slap your hand away from reaching for it every single day. I'm currently testing about three different mascaras and I'm telling you, it takes EVERYTHING IN ME not to reach for this one every single time I apply my makeup.

So why am I so in love with this one? Well for starters, volumizing mascaras are my very favorite, since I have fine, nonexistent lashes. Defining, separating and lengthening usually take a back seat for me, because I NEED a mascara that bulks up my lashes, first and foremost. I prefer a bit of an impact when it comes to how my lashes look, so those of you who like very clean, separated, sleek lashes with more length and less volume, or a natural look, can probably stop reading this review right now. This one's not for you.

But if you like volumized, pumped up, super-visible, on-the-border-of-almost-looking-clumpy-but-not-quite-clumpy lashes, welcome to my world and welcome to what might possibly be your new favorite mascara!

Let's take a look at some pics!

 Top horizontal row: no mascara
Second horizontal row: one coat
Third horizontal row: two coats

As you can see, this product REALLY delivers on the volume, and surprise surprise: it delivers on length as well! Another thing I love about this mascara is that it's on the drier side (I hate wet mascaras) but it's not so dry that you don't have time to layer. Also, when it dries, it doesn't become hard or crunchy. My lashes are still pliable throughout the day.

FINAL VERDICT: After using this mascara for a month now, in many different types of weather (it was 90 degrees here in San Diego for a few days in January), this never ran, smeared, flaked or smudged on my oily eye region, even after a full day and night of wear. I find the fragrance to be mild, and it smells kind of "earthy" to me, which I like. It removes quite easily with my normal facial cleanser, and the few times I've used a makeup towelette to remove it, it was easy as pie and one or two swipes left me with no trace left behind. My only criticism would be that I prefer my brush to taper a bit more on the end, for easier access to my outer lashes and lower lashes. But after using this for a month, I've learned how to adapt and it's really not an issue for me at this point. If you like big brushes, lots of volume and a slightly drier formula, I think you might love this mascara. Just like the Shimmer Strips Eyeliner Trio, I give Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara my very highest recommendation (specifically to my fellow volume-fiends).

Have you tried this mascara yet? Do you think it might fit your particular lash needs? I'd love to hear from you!

Paula Begoun's Top 10 Beauty Products and more

This just hit my in-box and I thought it would be fun to share with you, since so many of us are fans of Paula Begoun.

I'd love to hear if you agree with her 10 Makeup Commandments and also if you've tried any of the products on her Best of the Best list. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Paula Begoun’s 10 Makeup Commandments
  1. Expensive Doesn’t Mean Better!  There are good and bad products in all price categories, and there are brilliant inexpensive products you should absolutely consider before going for the expensive stuff.
  2. Shop With A Clean Slate!  If you plan to test foundation or concealer, visit the store or salon with a clean, bare face that’s prepped for makeup application, or be willing to take off the makeup you have on.
  3. The Right Light is Key!  Always check foundation, concealer and powder colors in natural light.  Department store lighting is deceiving; what looks perfect under artificial light can look glaringly wrong in broad daylight.
  4. Tone Down the Shine!  Be careful with shiny blush and eyeshadow.  Generally, for daytime makeup, a blush with a matte finish or just a hint of sheen works best.  Shinier makeup is best reserved for evening use or special occasions.
  5. It’s All in the Tools!  Whenever possible, test powder-based products (e.g., blush, eyeshadow) with the appropriate brushes.  Avoid sponge-tip applicators for eyeshadows and those cheap, super-tiny brushes often packaged with powder blushes.
  6. Protect Those Peepers & Lips!  Never test mascara or liquid eyeliner in the store.  Even if the brand offers disposable applicators, you don’t know how many people have double-dipped, how old the testers are, or how contaminated they may be.  We know it’s a pain, but for the health of your eyes, it’s best to purchase these products and test them at home.  The same is true when it comes to lip glosses.  Most glosses have sponge-tip or brush applicators that can harbor germs from other people.  It’s best to swipe the gloss on the top of your hand so you can get a sense of how the color “reads” on your skin and can assess its texture and finish.
  7. Smack On Lips, Not Germs!  Before you test a lipstick on your lips, have a salesperson sanitize it for you with an alcohol-based spray.  Lipsticks at the counter can become contaminated with germs and microbes that you don’t want near your mouth.  No alcohol spray?  Then wipe off several layers of lipstick with a clean tissue or have the sales associate “shave” off the top portion of the lipstick with a disposable spatula.
  8. Take Cues from the Pros!  See a cosmetics salesperson whose makeup you admire? Ask them for application tips, especially if their skin tone is similar to yours.  Chances are good you’ll pick up some great tips and begin to feel more confident about selecting the best colors for your needs.
  9. When In Doubt, Take It Back and Try Again!  If you buy a product that doesn’t work for you, don’t be afraid to take it back.  Almost all drugstores and mass-market stores (think Rite Aid and Wal-Mart) will provide a complete refund on cosmetics purchases if you have the receipt—even if the item has been used.
  10. Bye, Bye Blues!  Lastly, as stated in Paula’s first book, Blue Eyeshadow Should Be Illegal, AVOID blue eyeshadow.  Unless it’s a deep navy, which can almost pass for black, most shades of blue are difficult to work with.  Plus, they do not play up blue eyes; actually, the opposite is true.  The same goes for any eyeshadow shade that’s too colorful, including orange, green, fuchsia, teal and especially red, which can make your eye area look inflamed rather than attractive.  Not ready to give up such shades?  Think of the fashion magazine covers you’ve admired, and then ask yourself: How many of those models or celebrities were sporting bright, colorful eye designs?

So, dear readers, what do you think? I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to see that two of the products I constantly rave about on Nouveau Cheap (#4 and #9) made her Best of the Best list (and #4 just so happens to be on clearance at CVS right now if you want to try it!). As for her 10 Makeup Commandments, I have to admit, I still enjoy an occasional pop of teal on my eyes, and sometimes even teal eyeliner.

So, let's hear it! What do you think? Do you agree with Paula Begoun's advice or choices for Best of the Best? Have you tried any of the products on her list? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The Wednesday Question

I was absolutely blown away by the response to last week's question (thank you so much to everyone who responded--you all gave me such incredible advice and I'm convinced that I will now find the perfect affordable blush brush, which of course I will review here when I finally purchase!). I'm hoping you'll take a minute to answer this week's question too!

Foundation: liquid, cream, powder, mineral or other? And why?

It's no secret that I'm a powder foundation gal, and my holy grail powder foundation is Physicians Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50. I love it because I have super oily skin, it's a snap to apply and gives me awesome coverage without looking cakey or settling into my fine lines. So what about you? What foundation do you use, and why does it work for you?
