Over the past year, we've seen some Big Lots sightings that have made jaws drop. Makeup that you'd never dream of finding at Big Lots has been spotted across the country, from Too Faced Cosmetics to Philosophy and CK Cosmetics. We've even spotted rare, limited edition makeup (just the other day, I spotted Maybelline Amethyst Ablaze(!) at a local Big Lots, and also Triple Yum).
But never in a million years did I expect to find this at my local Big Lots the other day:
You are not hallucinating. This is a L'Oreal Limited Edition Metallique Foil Eye Color Crayon.
For those of you unfamiliar with these little jewels, Metallique was a limited edition collection released by L'Oreal in the Fall of 2007 (I would direct you to a link of the display, but I didn't start blogging until the Spring of 2009, so I don't have any pics).
I fell HARD for these little foil crayons back in '07. I've thought about them a lot over the years, and I simply could not believe my eyes when I spotted them the other day at Big Lots. I had to buy one in every shade available:
Copper Foil
Black Foil
Golden Foil
Bronze Foil
Khaki Foil
I'm sure this goes without saying, but I'm a makeup collector. Not only do I love and use makeup, but I also like to collect certain pieces (hey, some people collect snow globes, I collect makeup.). Even though these probably sat in a temperature-controlled warehouse somewhere for the past five years before they ended up at Big Lots, I'm still kind of squeamish about using an eye product that's five years old (but that's just me). Therefore, these will go right alongside my unopened Revlon Street Wears, to be loved and adored from afar for all eternity.
PS: In case you're curious, I also love to hold on to certain makeup items for reference. Over the decades, I've seen many beauty products and concepts get "recycled". So I like to hold on to things so that I can show you the "original" if something gets recycled and released as "new" later down the line. I'm a geek that way...what can I say?

Thanks for reading, and I'd love to hear from you if you remember the L'Oreal Metallique Collection. If you do, are you freaking out as much as I am over this Big Lots find??
Wow that is so cool!! I really want to go to big lots and just look around! Is this stuff with makeup or do you normally have to look around?
ReplyDeleteThey were in with the regular makeup. :)
DeleteI found this item at local Dollar Tree not too long ago.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! Seriously? You have an awesome Dollar Tree!!
DeleteI found it at Dollar Tree as well and picked up a few.
DeleteI found a TON of these foil crayons at the Dollar Tree in Bismarck, ND a month ago. G, can you show me, and anyone else, who might find these, how to use them? I understand they are to be used wet, but with the blunt tip, how do you apply?
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous!!
DeleteIf i'm applying just as a regular shadow, I used to just rub it on my lids and then blend with my finger. If the pigment isn't there, I used to run the tip under water for a sec, shake it off a bit, and then apply it while the stick is a bit damp.
You can also sharpen these with a regular jumbo sharpener to line the eyes, but the stick needs to be completely dry before you sharpen it. Hope that helps! :)
Just to let you know Ive seen these 20x at Bealls Outlet. Idk if you have one where you live, but they always have these. I didn't realize they were anything special. They have a bunch of discontinued stuff there all the time so I check up every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteWow! How cool! I don't know what Bealls is (I don't think we have those here in San Diego) but i'm so jealous! :)
DeleteBealls is a regional dept. store chain. They are in Florida, and possibly also in neighboring states (Alabama, Georgia, etc.). The outlet stores have nothing to do with the regular Bealls, however. I would equate the Bealls outlets to Tuesday Morning stores. Do you have TM stores in San Diego?
DeleteThey're also in Texas (well, they used to be). But yeah, bealls is all over Florida. I think it's related to palais royal.
DeleteWow, I take it back. Just looked it up. Bealls Texas and Bealls Florida are not the same. If you have a Burkes outlet, that is bealls nessaq and isis04 are talking about, so you might have luck checking there.
DeleteYep, I'm in FL, and the 1st though I had when I read this was "wow - the Beall's Outlets around here have 'em ALL THE TIME". Like NessaQ - I didn't know they were anything special. Might hafta try 1 or 2; they're CHEAP.
DeleteThis is so cool! I am going to the nearest Big Lots soon:) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're so welcome! I hope you can find them! :)
DeleteAwesome find! I need to take a hike down to a Big Lots STAT and try to find me some goodies! I am also going to run by Dollar Tree this week also and hope to snag a few cheapies. Great post as usual! Love your blog and have been a longtime reader! :)
ReplyDeleteI sure wish my Big Lots had the stuff you find there. Mine never has any of the great things that others find. My Dollar Tree rarely has great finds either and we have a ton around hear and the home office/distribution is only like 20 miles away. :(
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. None of the "outlet" stores around here ever get anything good. Even TJMaxx is always a bust. (the only makeup/polish I've ever seen at TJM was a bunch of red cream Essie's... at $6 a bottle. Pthbbbt on that)
Deletemy dollar stores and big lots rarely have "cool" items...so bummed :- (
ReplyDeleteI did score some of those E.L.F. brushes with the wooden handle and a Rimmel mascara yesterday but I definitely didn't see these there.
I know what you mean just to hold onto them, my mom passed away in 2009 and I wish I would have held on to her makeup she had vintage lipsticks and compacts, but I tossed it and now i am kicking myslef.....
ReplyDeleteAwww G, I wish I'd know what these were, I was in Dollar Tree a few weeks ago several hours from where I live and they had TONS of these. Seems like all the shades you showed us were there. I had no idea that they were anything special and because i'd never heard of them I passed. I guess next week i'll have to check back and see if I can find any if they're still there.
ReplyDeleteI was as excited to find Maybelline Cool Effect shadows in the tube at Dollar Tree. Great on their own, fantastic as a shadow base, I bought and used up every color they made and never thought I'd find them again.
ReplyDeleteOMG I saw these at Dollar Tree and bought the Khaki and Black ones!
ReplyDeleteI also found these at Dollar Tree! About two months ago though, but the last time I was there, I didn't see any more. I'll have to break into them soon and try them out :)
ReplyDeleteOooh! The Loreal Metallique looks like the HiP color sticks. I finally bought one when they were being clearanced and was totally impressed by the wear and saturation. If you're looking for colorful versions, you might want to scan the eBay for the HiP version.
ReplyDeleteI saw these at my local Big Lots but they just looked confusing to use and super breakable so I passed.
ReplyDeleteThey still have a bunch of limited edition L'oreal Line Intensifique and Eye Dramatiques there.
My dollar tree had some L'oreal liners too. I wonder what is up with all the influx of L'oreal.
My big lots makeup never changes I did find the end cap for the philosophy makeup, but that was it. And they block my makeup so I cant even look either the batteries are in the way a cart is in the way or they push the chips in front of it. I wish it wasn't moved near the front corner of the store. My dollar tree has been crap for awhile now.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Amethyst Ablaze still around? I remembered it's still on the Maybelline site, so it's not really limited!
ReplyDeleteG, don't worry, I started collecting nail polish again allt hanks to me starting to use it again. I still have my Sinfuls, NYC, SuQuu, and Sally Hansen polishes from when I was in high school! I even have a Planet X Ppolish I found at a flea marketyears ago and it's still liquid and used it again not too long ago and ended up as a summer fave despite its age. I also collect lapel pins so don't feel bad on collecting things. And I didn't start wearing make up until 2009, so I didn't know about these crayon things.
I live in Oceanside, North San Diego County.. What Big Lots did you go to? I have three in the area and never find anything good. I could make the drive to San Diego just to check it out.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
I found one lone Silver Foil in the gross plastic tub of "tested" lipsticks and opened philosophy products.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it's unsafe to use these, or just kinda icky?
Wow they look like they would be seriously pigmented!
ReplyDeleteMan, I'm jealous of you guys that live near awesome Big Lots and Dollar Trees. The Big Lots in my town has an absolutely shameful makeup selection (I'm starting to wonder if they ever get new stock at all). The Dollar Trees have a pretty good selection of LA Colors and sometimes NYC, but not much else. Sadface!
ReplyDeleteI spotted all three colors fully in stock at two different Dollar Tree stores in West Michigan. :-) Today I should add- November 13th
ReplyDeleteI have a whole bunch of these
