The Wednesday Question

What is the most you will pay for a single drugstore makeup product (excluding skincare)?

When it comes to drugstore makeup, I tend to shut my wallet when products reach the $15 mark. Even if it's foundation (which is the most expensive item in a range to begin with), $15 makes me close my wallet and wait for a good sale and/or coupon. As for drugstore eyeshadows and lip colors, I tend to get nervous when the price hits the $9.99 mark. At that point, I end up waiting patiently for a good sale and/or coupon, because I always end up saying to myself, "For a few dollars more, I could get that MAC eyeshadow I've been wanting..." For nail polish, I try to stay below $5.99. If it's above $5.99, I start to think, "Well, I might as well buy Zoya, China Glaze, OPI, etc."

  1. G, I would say that I am right there with you on those price points. I nearly always wait for sales and/or CVS Extrabucks to buy anything that's more than about $7. with the exception of nail polish, which is typically Sinful Colors, Spoiled or Milani. All of these are affordable and worth the price, I think. I subscribe to the old adage, "never pay retail." For that matter, I also wait for sales at Sally's, such as China Glaze B2G1, or something like that. ;)

  2. I usually hit a sale no matter what unless something is REALLY limited edition. I just swatched the new Maybelline Color Tattoos & wouldn't wait for a sale for those, but for the couple more I want from the permanent line I'll be waiting it out. I probably am willing to spend significantly more on foundation/bb creams.

  3. When it comes to base makeup (foundation or tinted moisturizer) my limit is $20 CAD, which I haven't had to pay in a very long time thanks to gift cards and my drugstore rewards program. For blush and eyeshadows $10 is my limit but usually I won't spend more than $5. The only time I've spend more than that is for the colour tattoos and the infallibles since they're still (relatively) new and unique for drugstore (in my part of Canada at least). If it's a palette, $30-$50 with a lot of research But I've only ever spend that much on an Inglot palette. For lipsticks or balms, $5 is the most. Except for the kissable balm stains cause I couldn't wait and just wanted one.

  4. Probably around $10, and it doesn't vary much by item either. Foundation, eyeshadow, lipstick - all around $10. I'd even pay $10 for a nail polish - some of my favorite nail polishes are from the drugstore!

  5. For me, without any coupon, discount or sale being offered I usually limit my drugstore cosmetic purchases to $10-12 dollars- and even then, it has to be a product that is either a Holy Grail or something that I desperately want to try. Beyond that, it makes more sense to me to just pop on down to Sephora and get a more expensive brand. My one exception would be on palettes. For example, when I find NYX palettes such as the 'Bohemian Palette' that is at Ulta right now for $17.99, I would purchase that because you get a lot of eyeshadows and also blushes for that price. I will usually just purchase a palette of multiple eyeshadows that way, instead of buying eyeshadow singles of NYX for $3-4.99 a piece.

  6. Yeah I don't think I go over $15 at the drugstore - except some of the fantastic Olay skincare products. But not makeup. Usually I pay under 10.

  7. I don't really buy skincare from the drugstore, but I do like to buy makeup (mainly shadows) and polish there. So for those kinds of items I don't want to pay above $10 and I prefer it be less than that. For polish I agree with you. If I'm going to spend that much I want to order from Zoya. Luckily I can shop at Cosmoprof and get all my China Glaze and OPI for a lot less than retail. I just feel that once I hit about $10 I can pay a little more and get a mid end product.

  8. I usually like to stick under $10, but depending on the product and the quality I'll pay more.

  9. $10.00 I think is reasonable. Anything over, I feel I could buy department store. I will pay a bit more for skincare. I don't know what I will do once prices go up even more, as they will one day.

  10. Roughly $5 for nails, 10 for lips/eyes/blush, $15 for face. The retail can be more but I don't like top part more than this for drugstore makeup.

  11. My upper limit for drugstore polish is $4 (don't wear makeup, so it's not a concern). And it better be full size. I passed on the new Maybelline colors, 'cause for the price per ounce, I could be getting a bottle of Zoya or Nubar. I'll make an exception if it is something truly awesome, but that doesn't happen much :)

  12. HMM.. I try very hard to get everything on sale no matter what it is, except for LE's of course (I still try, but will buy them without). I tend to focus more on swatches and reviews to locate quality products vs. price.. I don't mind paying more if it is truly a great product. I have noticed a large price hike in recent years, coupled with a large increase in quality. I guess I would rather pay a bit more for something I will actually use and enjoy, than a product that costs very little yet is unusable. If Maybelline, for example, needs to increase their prices by a few dollars to develop a quad that is full of gorgeous creamy pigmented shadows, I'm ok with that. Quality ingredients and superior formulas cost money to develop and use. There is a limit though- the reason I hardly ever buy high end.. and have regretted most of the purchases I did make (the only exception so far is UDPP, even that I buy the small sample size) because they have not measured up, IMO, to the huge increase in price compared to similar products, in most cases they have actually been inferior. In most cases you are paying for the name vs. the product. And of course price is not a signifier of quality, I have HG products that cost $1 as well as those that cost $20.

  13. I think along the same lines as you. My casio is $15

  14. Generally <$9 with some wiggle room on face stuff, but I could see spending $25 if someone came out with a beautiful dupe of Guerlain Meteorites.

  15. Hi! I try to always have a coupon, ECB's, UP rewards, RRs, etc. on hand when I buy drugstore brands, unless it's something I've been searching for forever. And now I wait on high end brands for the 20% off coupons Ulta sends out every now and then, or GWP events, or at the very least a free shipping code!

  16. Great question! I won't spend more than $4 on nail polish. There are some GREAT drugstore ones around this price point (or less). I wait to buy my foundation (Revlon Colorstay) when Revlon is 40% off.... Everything else I try to keep under $6. I really like knowing that I can look put-together without spending an exorbitant amount, even if no one else knows! :)

  17. I have a HG Korean brand BB cream that I use for both foundation and powder, so that isn't an issue. I also only use Zoya polish because of the absence of the "big 5" (and I only buy those during specials since they do them so often). I found a HG blush from MAC several years ago (of course it had to be LE) and stocked up enough to last me till I die...lol. So, that basically leaves shadow, liner, mascara, and lippies that I buy from the drugstore. I absolutely will not pay more than $7 for any of those, but most of the time it is even less because I tend to only buy if there is a 40% off sale or BOGO free. I try not to fall prey to LE drugstore collections. The only exception is Wet N Wild shadow palettes. I will hunt those down - sale or no sale - but then again, even at regular price they are always below my max.

  18. I'm with you, too. $15 is a bit much for a d/s product. I love my physician's formula bronzers & powders, which frequently hit the $15 mark, but I always wait for a sale.

  19. I'm pretty much the same as you G. Except with nail polish I don't like to go over $3.50 (I know I sound so cheap). Mascara I can do $7, $8. Maybe $10. Maybe. Powder and concealer, I don't know. less than $10. I don't buy lipsticks.
