Review: ChapStick Holiday 2014 Limited Edition Flavors

A little while ago I showed you the press info for the Holiday 2014 offerings from ChapStick. I actually received the new lip balms for review shortly after that post, so in case you haven't seen these in your area yet, here's a closer look!

ChapStick Holiday 2014 Limited Edition Collection

ChapStick Holiday 2014 Limited Edition Mixstix
Vanilla Candy Cane Milkshake
($1.99 - $2.69 depending on the retailer; 0.155 oz)

The end with the pearlized white cap is the Vanilla Milkshake flavor:

And the end with the red cap is the Candy Cane flavor:

Vanilla Milk Shake: This really does smell like a vanilla milk shake. I'm quite impressed with the accuracy--there's more than just vanilla here. I can actually detect a "milk" note as well. The flavor is quite mild though, and there's a little bit of a waxy taste to this one. If you've read my original review of the permanent Mixstix, you know that I find the scents and flavors in the Mixstix formulation to be a bit softer in general, so this was not a surprise to me.

Candy Cane: To me, the fragrance is identical to the regular Candy Cane ChapStick (which you'll see below). I really detect no difference. As for the flavor, it's quite similar to the regular Candy Cane Chapstick (you get the same tingle on your lips) but I do detect a little bit of a waxy note (probably due to the different formulation) that I don't get with the regular Candy Candy ChapStick.

Overall, I can see this being a must-have for collectors, but I personally prefer the formula of the original ChapSticks over the Mixstix. Also, I have a tip for you. If you're planning on layering these, start with a VERY light application of the Candy Cane side first. Then apply a generous layer of the Vanilla Milkshake side. If you do it the other way around, the Candy Cane scent/flavor will completely dominate the mixture and you won't detect any vanilla at all (trust me on that one!). So just remember: a little Candy Candy first, followed by a lot of Vanilla Milkshake. This combination really does taste like a Vanilla Candy Cane Milkshake to me!

ChapStick Holiday 2014 Limited Edition Flavors
Candy Cane, Pumpkin Pie
($1 - $1.99 depending on the retailer; 0.15 oz)

As most of you probably know, Candy Cane came out a few years ago (I believe it first debuted for Holiday 2012, but I'd have to double-check my archives). So it's back again for another round, and we've also got a brand new flavor for Holiday 2014: Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin Pie Ingredients

The ingredients for Candy Cane are not printed on the tube, so you can click here to view them if you'd like more info.

I love that the color of Pumpkin Pie is the actual color of pumpkin pie filling.

Candy Cane: I detect no different whatsoever in this year's Candy Cane versus previous years' formulas. This has the same tingle on the lips, the same minty burst and the same underlying sweet and creamy notes that have made it so popular over the years. If you love the flavor and scent of candy canes, and you haven't tried this one yet, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Pumpkin Pie: I was so scared that this flavor would amount to nothing but cinnamon with just a touch of pumpkin. Well I'm delighted to tell you that this is not the case. I get lots of nutmeg in this one. Nutmeg! Sorry, but I'm a huge nutmeg fan and I feel that we don't see nearly enough nutmeg scented/flavored things in the lip balm/bath/body world (cinnamon dominates when it comes to dessert spices, right?). So yay for the underdog! I do get some pumpkin here too, but it's more of the canned pumpkin variety. Altogether, this smells AND tastes very much like pumpkin pie filling to me; more so than actual pumpkin pie. I don't really get a buttery crust note or a whipped cream note, but that's perfectly OK for me personally because NUTMEG! Oh, and before I forget, the scent and flavor are both medium-strong.

  1. Darn it, I'm gonna have to chase that Pumpkin Pie at my local CVS then. Thanks for the review G, even if you're convincing me to spend more money!

  3. Love the Pumpkin Pie flavor! Wearing it now, in fact. At my Walmart they had a large bin-style Chapstick display on an end cap at the registers and lots of Candy Cane and Pumpkin Pie tubes were there. Hope that helps in the search!

  4. As soon as you posted about the Pumpkin Pie Chapsticks I went on the hunt and that very day found a huge display at Walmart by the check out lines with all the flavors. I already have a large supply of Candy Cane which is my favorite Chapstick flavor so I didn't bother with that but got a couple of Pumpkin Pie and I love them. In fact I need a few more because with winter coming I need lip balm everywhere! All my bags, coats, etc. I don't detect a flavor to the Pumpkin Pie per se but that is ok. I rather have scent! I wish Carmex would get on the ball and make some fun new flavors! I have not found the Mixstik but I really want to so I plan to keep hunting!

  10. I bought the pumpkin pie one today at Walmart and I was pleasantly surprised! I too thought it would be cinnamon with a hint of pumpkin. I couldn't be more wrong though, it is absolutely perfect!
