Maybelline ColorSensational Amethyst Ablaze (from the LE The Jewels collection)

This rarely ever happens, but after I posted the pics of the new ColorSensational The Jewels collection yesterday, I ran out and bought one of the lipsticks for full price (well, I did have a $1 off coupon plus $3 in +UP Rewards, but still). I try to avoid paying full price for drugstore products, but I have not been able to stop thinking about that gorgeous purple lipstick, Amethyst Ablaze!

And what's even more bizarre is that, for the most part, purples look awful on me (eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick; I just can't pull off purples).

So just what IS is about Amethyst Ablaze that has me hypnotized? Let's take a look:

Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Amethyst Ablaze
(retail: around $7)

Deep, rich, gorgeous PURPLE! But now for the moment of truth: what does it look like on the skin?

As you can see, it warms up a bit on my skin. It's not too bad, but it's definitely not the true purple I thought it would be based on the tube. It's more of a deep, blue-based magenta in person, but it does have purple tendencies.

Amethyst Ablaze on my lips:

On my lips, it really warms up, but guess what? I still kind of love it. It's SO far out of my comfort zone of pinky-browns and roses that I don't know how I'm going to wear it just yet, but I tossed my receipt, which means I'm keeping this baby.

Maybe it's my longing for fall to hurry up and get to San Diego, but these deep, rich, bold colors are my weakness right now, and I'm glad I bought Amethyst Ablaze.

By the way, this is not a super opaque lipstick (but it is very pigmented), so you can wear it sheer or build for more intensity. The above pics were taken after two coats of lipstick on my lips.

Have you spotted The Jewels collection in your area yet?

  2. That colour is so pretty and it looks smashing on you.

I haven't seen these lipsticks, yet. But they sound and look great. I hope that there is a shade or two I could pull off. I wish that I could wear that purple. :D

  4. I know you don't do them, but I would love to see what you come up with for a FOTD while wearing this lipstick. I'm thinking neutrals on the eyes, but a dramatic black cat eye gel/cream eyeliner. Also light on the blush so the eyes and lips stand out even more. Love the lipstick!

  6. You keep saying that you can't pull off purples, but nobody would know it from this swatch. Purple is my favorite color but I think it's the mauve-y berry purples; not so much the true violet purples. I kinda think anyone that looks best in cool brights would do great with this color. Back in the 70s Maybelline had a nail and I think a lip color called amethyst that was probably almost the exact same color. It has been gone a long, long time, but I can't wait to try this and see if they've brought it back.

  9. Gorgeous! This swatch and picture of it on your lips had me running for the bathroom so I could pull out my favorite purple lipstick Covergirl's Embrace! I'm dying to know how this one compares in person! The Covergirl is so opaque and deep that sometimes I feel like the lipstick is wearing me instead of the other way around! If the Maybelline is the same color, but more sheer? I will probably do cartwheels in the store! Gotta get to Wags today!

  15. It's GORGEOUS on you!!!! I'm so glad you tried it! It looks a bit like a CG lipstick i have from the Queen collection called Ruby Slipper (i think), which looks burgundy in the tube but goes on a sheer plummy shade.
