Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop: a budget-friendly DIY version

After I saw Scrangie's swatches of Deborah Lippmann Candy Shop, I wiped the drool from my chin and then realized that I might be able to recreate the LOOK of this polish (I'm not in any way, shape or form saying this is a perfect dupe) for much less money, using polishes I already had on hand.

Really, all you need is a pink jelly and one of the various multi-colored glitter polishes that are floating around at the drugstores these days to get something that mimics the look of Candy Shop (it's never going to be identical because just look at Scrangie's pics--it's a beauty!).

But for around $5 total (per look), I don't think I did too bad, considering that Candy Shop will set you back $42 since I believe it only comes in this trio.

I tried three different experiments for this post (excuse the cuticles).

For the first experiment, I used the new Wet n Wild LE polish Correction Tape (retail: $1.99) and my favorite milky pink jelly polish by City Colors (unnamed). City Colors polishes retail for $1.99 and can be found at Rite Aid (click here for a pic of the display).

For the above look, I used two coats of City Colors, one coat of Correction Tape, followed by another coat of City Colors and then top coat. While Correction Tape is gorgeous (who doesn't love square glitter, right?), there's a lot of blue in it, which really sets it apart from the glitter in Candy Shop.

For my next experiment, I used Milani Gems 2.0 (retail: $4.99) and City Colors:

Now we're getting closer! For this look, I used one coat of City Colors, followed by two coats of Milani Gems, then two additional coats of City Colors followed by top coat.

For my third experiment, and my favorite look of all, I used the new Confetti shade, Tasmanian Devil (retail: $1.99; available only at CVS) and City Colors:

For this look, I used one coat of City Colors, two coats of Tasmanian Devil, followed by two more coats of City Colors and then top coat.

While this certainly isn't an exact replica of Candy Shop, I think it has such a festive look to it, which is the thing I love the most about Candy Shop. The fine silver glitter running through Tasmanian Devil really kicks things up a notch. I LOVE this combo!

I hope this helps some of you who might love Candy Shop but can't afford it. Pick up some glittery polish and a milky pink jelly like the one from City Colors and play around a bit. You can get this look for literally under five bucks!

  1. Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely going to try something like this to stop my Candy Shop craving. All three ways look great! My personal fave is the second.

  3. I am actually wearing a re-creation of it right now, with Sephora OPI Spark-tacular and a Sephora Collection pink... it's pretty, but it has me longing for the real deal, lol. :)

  4. I think the second is closest to Candy Shop, but the third is even better! It's the tiny glitters in Tasmanian Devil that make it the best one.

  7. Your looks are all really cute! But after I looked at them I clicked over to look at the originals and I'm in love! I have 3 Happy Birthday dupes and still long for the original, and now I find out that my dream polish comes in pink and black?! I'm DYING! Why o' why must you be so expensive Deborah Lippmann?!

  8. I took a bottle of NYC Starry silver glitter that was about 1/4 used and added 6 drops of red and a glug of white. I got the pink part right, the glitter isn't exactly right but it makes me happy. Tasmanian Devil is definitely closer to the real deal, but sadly my CVS doesn't have it.

  9. As soon as I saw your dupes, I knew I had to track them down. My CVS had 5 Tasmanian Devils and i bought two of them, but now I think I may go back and get the others. I LOOOOVE this glitter! I couldn't find the City Colors polishes anywhere in town, so I bought just about every milky jelly pink I could find and played last night. My best version uses Dawn from the Revlon Just Tinted collection (1 layer), then two layers of TD, one layer of Dawn, one more TD, then Seche Vite to smooth out the top. I ADORE this look, I can't stop checking it out! I'm also going to go back and get the other Dawn at my CVS, so that I can make this look for a long time to come :) Thank you so much for the ideas!
