Review: Batiste Dry Shampoo from Sally Beauty

I've got oily skin and side-swept bangs, so if I go more than one day without shampooing, my bangs get all separated and greasy and gross-looking. Which is precisely why I love a good dry shampoo. If I skip a day of shampooing, I can use a little dry shampoo and throw my hair up into a ponytail and my bangs will look shower-fresh and good to go.

I've been extremely loyal to my Stila Hair Refresher in "Jade Blossom" because it works and well, it cost me $28 so you better believe I'm going to use up every last spec of it. I love the scent (floral green tea) and even though it comes in a plastic squeeze bottle which can apply too much product if you're not careful, it's still a good dry shampoo and it works.

But I've been hearing a lot of buzz about Batiste Dry Shampoo (retail: $8.29, 5.05 oz) lately so when I saw that it's currently on sale at Sally for $5.99, I had to get some. I have to confess that I am captivating by the thought of a dry shampoo in an aerosol can. It just seems so easy to control because you can point the nozzle exactly where you want it to go.

Batiste comes in two scents: "Original" and "Blush". The girl at Sally said that "Blush" is the most popular but I sprayed it and all I smelled was gardenia, which is not one of my favorite scents (I O.D.'d on Marc Jacobs perfume when it first came out and now I can't stand the smell of it. I totally ruined it for myself.) So I went with "Original" which is a clean, powdery, lemon scent. It's pleasant and not headache-inducing at all.

I've got to say that the spray nozzle on this can is powerful. One or two sprays is about all it takes to apply this to my bangs. And what I LOOOOOVE about it is how my hair feels afterward. OMG, I am so used to feeling a kind of heavy, powdery feeling after using the Stila product, but THIS product makes your hair feel almost like you put a fine layer of aloe vera gel on your hair. Don't get me wrong, it's not wet AT ALL, but it feels almost gel-like for a second until it dries. I think this ultra-light gel feeling is due to the rice starch in the product, but whatever it is, it feels really neat and I loooove it. After a split second that gel feeling is gone and your hair just feels clean and fresh with no trace of oil remaining. Here are some before and after pics of my bangs:

Here's my greasy, disgusting, next-day bangs. Ick.

Here are my bangs about 30 seconds after spraying Batiste on them.

And here are my bangs after combing them into place.

I've also read that some women like to use dry shampoos in their hair AFTER shampooing, just to give the hair some extra texture and body. I am so going to try this because I just absolutely love this stuff. And remember, it's on sale right now at Sally for $5.99 (retail: $8.29) so if you want some, now is the time to get it.

Do you own Batiste? I'd love to know what you think!

  1. THANK YOU so much for this post! I've been looking for a less expensive dry shampoo (all I've been able to find so far is Big Sexy Hair and TIGI's versions, which both sell for almost $20 a pop--ouch!). I'm going to Sally's after work to buy this product. Thanks again; your blog is now bookmarked and I shall be visiting over and over : )

  7. I've got the same problem : oily skin & side swept bangs and have been on the look-out for an inexpensive but good quality dry shampoo. I'm definately heading to Sally's Beauty Supply after work today. I need to try this one out! :) Thanks for your helpful review!!

  8. Thanks for posting this, Recessionista!
I have wanted to get some dry shampoo and didn't know what's out there. I will let you know what I think after I try some.

  9. I need to try this one - I've been using Ojon, but this sounds so reasonably priced!

  10. I think this is one of the few I haven't tried and I'll spend a fortune on dry shampoo. My local Sally is ALWAYS out! I'm so jealous of you right now-- it worked so well!!!

  11. Hey Amber! OMG, you have to pick this one up when they finally have it back in stock. It's unlike any other dry shampoo I've tried. Would so love to know your opinion of it. :)

  12. Hey Gloria! I think you need to pick this up when you run out of your Ojon. :) And if you do, please let me know what you think? I'd love to know how it compares. :)

  13. Hey thiamere! I'm sorry that you can't locate a dry shampoo in your country. :( My only suggestion is to search the US online beauty retailers that ship international. There has got to be at least one of them that carries a dry shampoo. But if you still can't find one, I've heard that baby powder also works! :)

Hey Jenn! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one with this "condition"! lol! If you get this, I would love to know what you think! :)

Hey Oceanwoman! I am sooo glad I could help! And of course, I would love to know your thoughts once you try this. :)

  14. i am in love with this dry shampoo! i have the same problem with my bangs..they get stringy and greasy bleh. but i use batiste and they look perfect. i also use this for volume. it gives me crazy volume unlike products i've bought for volumizing. i love this stuff and i just ran out eek!

  15. Hey giz89! Oh, I'm so glad you share my opinion on this product! It's pretty amazing and I cannot believe how nice and clean my bangs looked after I used it! Thanks for letting me know you use it as a volumizer--I cannot wait to try it like that because I could definitely use some volume. Oh, and don't forget that it's on sale right now at Sally. Since you said you just ran out, you might as well get it while it's cheap, right? lol. :)

  16. Baby powder works okay when you are in a pinch, but it takes the shade of your hair down a color. I am going to Sally's to get some of this!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hey Kate! I agree--you have to be very careful when using baby powder, but I've found that if you run a very fine-tooth comb through your hair after you use it, it seems to remove a lot of the white color from your hair. Not all of it, but a lot of it. But still, the Batiste is a lot easier (and better) to use because you can touch your hair afterward and you don't have that powdery feeling on your fingers. It's awesome! :)

  18. heyyy :) thanks for this blog! i too have side swept bangs and oily skin/hair. i havent bought it yet - im still contemplating - but so far, the reviews are raving!

do you recommend this for people with dark hair?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey MC! I think that this would work fine on people with dark hair, but it's been my experience that ALL dry shampoos (unless they're tinted) have a tendency to leave a white or gray cast to the hair, so you have to be careful not to use too much. If you do see a white a gray cast to you hair after you use this, just run a fine-tooth comb through your hair a few times and that should help remove the whiteness. Hope that helps and I'd love to know what you think if you try this brand! :)

  20. Hey there!
very helpful review, but I was wondering, in the long run, is it damaging to the hair? does it dry it out too much, irritate the skin, cause flakiness or any other hair/skin problem?
    thanks so much!

  21. Hi Anon! Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, I really can't answer that because I don't use this product on a consistent basis. I usually wash my very oily hair every day, so I reserve this product for the rare days when I skip shampooing and I'm throwing my hair up into a ponytail. I love that it makes my bangs look perfectly clean, and I have never experienced any dryness or irritation to my scalp. But again, it's not a product I use every day. So basically I can only tell you that for me, after using this product a few times every month, I have never experienced any type of drying or irritation. I hope that helps! :)

  23. Awww, thank you!! Beauty products are my passion, so I looove responding to comments. I get frustrated sometimes when I leave comments on other blogs asking questions and then never receive a response, so I promised myself I would *never* do that on my own blog. Thanks a million for noticing, and for reading! xo

  24. I was Googling Batista dry shampoo and came upon your blog post, which I found very helpful. I am new to the world of dry shampoo and it looks like this one will be a great item to try.
I saw a poster above mention that they found this at a drugstore - have you or anyone seen any at drugstores, and if so, where? I am not very close to a Sally store, and if I buy online after shipping it costs at least 12 bucks... and I'm cheap!!

  25. Hi Denise! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. I wish that I could help you, but I haven't seen this product anywhere in my area except for at Sally. If I hear of anything I will definitely post something!

Also, there's a seller on ebay that is selling travel size cans of this product for $6.95 with free shipping. Maybe that might be the way to go for you, since you really don't need much and even a travel can will last a good long time. I'm cheap too (lol!) and I think this is a pretty good deal if you can't make it to a Sally. :)

    Hope that helps!

  26. For people out of the country who can't find this awesome product, try a parcel forwarding company. It became a hassle for me to keep forwarding my sister's stuff to the Phillipines so I found a company called Shipito. Way worth it because now I can shop at Sephora who doesn't ship internationally.

  27. I have been wanting to try dry shampoo. I am glad I seen your review of it! My sister has been wanting to try it too. thanks!

  28. So glad I could help! And I'd love to know what you think of Batiste if you get it. :)

  29. Hi there :) I'm a relatively new reader... I've commented a few times already on more recent posts, but I just had to come back and write something on this Batiste one, because I just picked up my first can of Batiste Original yesterday, and I must say, I LOVE IT.... it is the best dry shampoo I've ever used (and I've used the $20+ kind). I got great results with the Batiste today. My hair didn't get that gross, heavy, clay/powder texture at all... it got clean feeling, looking, and smelling very quickly!!! :) No white residue on the hair, either. I was happy that it worked so well for $6.99 (with my Sally Beauty Club Card). THANKS FOR THIS TIP!!!!! Next month I will be getting a 15% off certificate from Sally because I have spent $25 there this month, and I'll probably use it to get a few backup cans of Batiste!

  30. I've been using dry shampoo for years - all the brands - all the price categories and I love Batiste the best...best scent and volume/oil control. I didn't know it was sold at Sally and some drugstores though! I've been paying too much at my local beauty supply. Thank you for all your thorough beauty and budget coverage!

  31. Hi, thanks for your posts! I LOVE dry shampoo (like you, I have oily hair and oily skin, and bangs) but I only like to wash my hair a couple of times a week, since it's coloured.

A little pricier than these, but one I like a lot, is Cake Beauty's Satin Sugar Hair & Body Refreshing Powder. It's reasonably inexpensive (less than $20 for a can), comes in a shaker can, and it lasts for a while (I'm still on my first can after a year or so, and I use it at least once a week). You don't need to use much, but the thing I like the most is that is comes in Darker Hues and Lighter Hues. (I'm a redhead, so I like the darker hues one, it doesn't leave that white cast.) And it smells not too bad, either! (I don't know if it's at any drugstores, I've always gotten it at Sephora.)

But I definitely want to try the Tresemme (I don't know if it's here in Canada yet), and the Batiste!

  32. This product is excellent!! I just bought it for a semester abroad in Prague (I'll be traveling on the weekends and wanted to keep my hair looking decent when I can't shower all the time, gross I know... Oh well!) This is amazing and it works perfectly for me! My bangs look like I just washed them and I really couldn't be happier with this product. Plus, it was on sale at Sally yesterday for $6.99!

  33. Thank you so much for your reviews! I have already ordered my first can of Batiste dry shampoo and can't wait to try it for my second day hair.

BTW, have you tried the new Batiste Boho and Diva scents?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I've used Pssst! and gotten no real results (an hour later I was greasy). I have a ton of hair that's fine so I go flat and greasy in a day. Washing everyday fades out my red. Vicious cycle begins.
I have yet to try Batiste as I'm stuck with a bunch of free samples of Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo (I'm a hairstylist) which smells great and looks great however it feels AWFUL! It's like a coating of heavy product on your hair and I use whatever I can to keep my super long extremely colored hair healthy - the last thing I want is for it to feel like straw! Has anyone tried the Beyond the Zone Dry shampoo?

    ReplyDelete
  35. have you tried the other varieties? when i was in ireland and denmark i purchased the tropical one and it is the best so far!!! The scent is PERFECT! A guy came up behind me at work and talked to me and said my hair smelled GREAT-and you should've seen the look on his face when I said thanks I didn't even wash it today lol. I saw on the official website they have other scents like boho, brit, for brunette and black hair and gold and silver shimmery varieties. however i am having trouble finding a site that will ship these european varieties to the US...boo
