Low-Cost Alternatives to the Artis Fluenta Oval 6 Brush

O! Wow Brush by Cailyn Cosmetics
(retail: $29.99 at Harmon)

Many thanks to reader Christina (@cosmeticsbychristina on Instagram) for this sighting!

Last year, I remember posting a pic on my Instagram when I first saw the Artis Fluenta Oval 6 brush on the Neiman Marcus site (you can see this brush for yourself HERE). That brush really captured my attention at the time because I had never seen anything quite like it, but I wasn't about to take a chance on it for $60 (ouch) just out of curiosity. In fact, ALL of the Artis brushes HERE still intrigue me, but the price points make my wallet weep.

Since I first discovered the Artis brushes, I have noticed that other brands have similar "toothbrush-style" makeup brushes, such as the MAC Master Class Oval 6 Brush ($42), and Missha makes one too (you can't get it on the Missha US site, but there are some eBay sells like this one who offer it for about $13 + shipping). Etude House also makes their own version, called the My Beauty Tool Secret Brush, which you can get on Amazon HERE for $15.99 + free shipping. I also just noticed that a brand called KingMas, which I have never heard of before, makes an oval brush which you can get on Amazon HERE for $5.49 (check the reviews on that one).

So there ARE lower-priced alternatives to Artis brushes out there, if you're intrigued by this particular style of brush. And today I want to let you know that there is also an in-store option if you want to see this style of brush in person before you buy one:

Christina spotted this O! Wow brush display by the brand Cailyn Cosmetics at her local Harmon recently and kindly shared this pic (you can also purchase it directly from the Cailyn site HERE, but it's $32 through their site; you can also get it on Amazon HERE for $29.95). I have also recently heard from readers who have spotted this display at Bed Bath & Beyond stores with an extended beauty department (Harmon and Christmas Tree Shops are both subsidiaries of Bed Bath & Beyond, so I would expect you can find this display at all three retailers right now).

As you can see, the price is definitely lower than both the Artis and MAC brushes, but not quite as good as the Korean beauty options (Missha and Etude House). But if you wanted to see this type of brush in person, definitely keep your eyes peeled the next time you're at Bed Bath & Beyond, Harmon, or Christmas Tree Shops. And if you already own the O! Wow brush (or any type of brush like this) you know I would LOVE to hear from you!

Thanks again, Christina, for the great sighting and pic. I really appreciate it!

    1. Lol! Yeah, I only wanted to list the low-cost alternatives here that have some positive reviews already out there! I'm scared of some of those eBay brushes too. ;)

    2. I've tried some of those really cheap brush (like $3 ish) options off of Amazon. Not sure if they're supposed to be more flexible (they probably should be haha) but they're actually very good brushes! Very dense and quite sturdy.

    3. I have the cheap ebay one. I payed $1.13 for it. It works pretty darn good. I use it everyday. You have to clean it though after every use cause it soaks up product like a mug and gets cakey quick. But it beats paying $60 bucks for a brush you might not even like. I love mine. Oh, and I rub my foundation in pretty hard. It bends great and I haven't snapped it yet. Had it for 2 months and no shedding too!

  2. It's also 29.95 on Amazon prime (but you cant use 20% off coupons like BB&B)!

    1. OMG, I think your comment came through right as I was adding the Amazon link to my blog post! I just noticed it's on Amazon too--thank you!! :)

  3. Qvc has 3 artis brushes, cleaning foam and cleaning pad for 89 dollars. Not bad considering the 6 is close to 50 dollars.I bought the set for myself for my birthday. I wish I had waited because not long after artis came out with the oval 7 which in my opinion is the perfect size. The six is smallish and the 8 and 10 are enormous. I've tried a super cheap dupe since. It was about 4 or 5 dollars on amazon. I've been wanting to try a mid priced dupe like this O brush, missha brush or etude brush.

    1. Thanks for the info and feedback! I'd love to know what you think of the super cheap ones in comparison to the Artis (since you own both)!

    2. The artis brush feels so soft and looks beautiful. On the super cheap brush the bristles are inconsistent and the brush is just black plastic. One side of the brush on the dupe feels very stiff. It does smooth out makeup nicely though just not as quickly and evenly as the artis. I still recommend getting an oval 7 if you are thinking about purchasing the brush mainly for foundation application. The oval six does the job but won't do it as fast as the seven since it's smaller. The artis brush gives a really nice buffed look to powder mineral foundation and applies other powders nicely.I didn't see that with the cheap dupe. It worked better with liquid. You'll use a lot less makeup using the artis since it won't suck up product. This is great if you find yourself having to use an expensive foundation.

  4. I have some other makeup brushes I got on ebay( from China), they are really good and were so cheap. I'll get you the name. I also ordered one of those plastic squeeze bottles that Sephora uses for their makeup remover( for customers). Its called a tattoo hand cleansing bottle, or something like that. It came from China, was 1.30 and free shipping. I poured my eye makeup remover in it and now its so easy to just squeeze it out instead of opening and closing the makeup remover bottle.

    2. The brushes I got are called sixplus. I just bought a couple eyebrushes years ago, i was looking for sigma dupes.

  5. My sweet husband got me the O Wow brush for Christmas. At the time, it was $18 on Amazon prime. I'm still on the fence about it. I like how it feels, but it seems to not blend my foundation as evenly as my other brushes. User error, I'm sure. I need to play with it some more and try it with some other products before I make up my mind. If I put foundation on the back of my hand and pick it up with my brush from there, I have found it works best to "bounce" this brush in the foundation rather than swirl or buff.

    1. Aaaw, what a guy! :) Thanks so much for the feedback. So helpful!! Are the bristles super soft and dense?

    2. It is super dense and super soft. I do feel like it kind of sucks foundation up. I think it's designed more for sweeping product on, where I prefer to buff my foundation on. I like the suggestion below about using it for contouring. That might be a better use for me than trying to use it for foundation.

    3. Hey Kristina. In all the tutorials I've watched using brushes like the Artis or O brush the instructors always have a better result by sparingly applying foundation(you'll need less than before) to your skin first and then with circular sweeping motions with the brush buffing it in. I haven't tried the O brush yet but with the Artis I had to get used to using a lot less product than before.

  6. I have a question...I have never seen a brush like this before, how would you use it?

  7. I have this one and love it but the only problem is that it is smaller than the artis ones. The Cailtin Oh Wow is about the size of my thumb print or my eye. I also have the etude house and don't like that one for foundation as it is tapered.

  8. I have the KingMas, and I use it to blend my contour. I found it to be a really nice, dense synthetic brush, ultra soft, and I've had zero fall out. If you are looking to experiment, it's KingMas from Amazon all day! I like mine so much I have no interest in a pricier version!

  9. I just (yesterday) bought the $5.49 brush on Amazon. I had a gift card from Christmas and figured "why not?" It didn't cost me anything and barely made a dent on the amount of the card. We'll see if it was worth it. ;)
