The Lipstick League - Week of 9.7.15

The Lipstick League Question of the Week

Do you color your hair? If so, do use at-home products or do you leave it to professionals?

G's answer: I do it myself, and I pretty much always have. I'm pretty loyal to Wella Color Charm liquid from Sally Beauty, because all of the stylists I know seem to agree that it covers gray the longest (and I find that to be true myself, since I've tried many other brands/formulas over the years). I also am just consistently happy with the results of Color Charm, no matter which shades I use (sometimes I mix shades, but only on the adivce of hair stylists because I've learned that there are some shades that shouldn't be mixed. I am not a colorist so I leave it to my friends who are when it comes to mixing advice!).

Guest Post of the Week, as chosen by EauMG - One of the things that I love about perfume is hearing everyone’s unique take on fragrance, their impressions, olfactive memories...it’s more about discussion than it is sniffing. 1. I actually decided to stop coloring it about 18 months ago. I started coloring it when I was around 12 or 13 and it is so much healthier now. I'm sure I'll do it again at some point though.

  2. I always color myself at home. I Iove Revlon Colorsilk. I am the only person I know that uses it and it is around $4 . Sometimes 2 for $6. I go a touch lighter in the summer and always make my bangs a little lighter in the winter than the rest of my hair. I have alot of grey hair and that makes for instant highlights!

  3. I had a nasty reaction to hair dye over 10 years ago (scalp burns and a rash). Now I use henna to add a little red and cover gray. My hair is really dark, so the henna just adds a red sheen there, but the sparse gray (white actually) hair colors bright red. I like the contrast :)

  4. I DIY. Now that I almost exclusively go light to medium brown or shades of red, it's pretty easy to do. I usually just go for what's on sale, or sometimes paint some red or a darker or lighter brown throughout for more depth.
I need to try the Color Charm. Gray coverage sounds good. I have a few stubborn grays that resist regular store-bought.

  5. I am a complete DIYer. Been coloring myself since I was 17 for fun then, for gray now LOL! Recently, and after much research, I went from dark auburn to blonde that came out so well even my stylist was impressed. And IMHO Wella Color Charm is the best!

  6. I have never colored my hair. Neither has my mom, nor her mom, and my paternal grandma stopped when she was around 55 (before I have memories of her). Now the grays are starting to multiply and it just sounds like a constant treadmill of time and research and damage to color.

My hair is also a lot straighter than everyone elses in my family, even more so now that I've moved to a dry climate, so I feel like I'm just going to have to figure out my own strategies. At some point I'm going to have to look into simple products like brightening shampoos so that at least I can be a good gray. ;-)
