How much do shade names influence your beauty purchases?
I'll admit it. Shade names can influence my purchasing. I try not to let that influence me, but if the name is particularly cute, catchy, funny or means something to me on a personal level, sometimes I can't resist. Many years ago I bought OPI My Auntie Drinks Chianti not only because I loved the color, but because I thought the name was hilarious. Cute names always get me too, like the Revlon Lip Butters (Red Velvet, Lollipop, Pink Frosting, etc.). For me, the right shade name can add to the allure of a product, and a GREAT shade name can make me notice a product I might have otherwise overlooked. That goes for shocking names too (sometimes). I remember in the late 90s when Urban Decay was still a relatively unknown brand that I could only find at a tiny counter at Nordstrom. When I first saw the name Mildew for an eyeshadow, I was disgusted yet intrigued, and I had to have it. You have to remember that shade names weren't like they are today, where anything goes. Back then, it was a big deal to see such an irreverent shade name for a beauty product, and it made me instantly fall in love with UD.
I never even notice the shades until I get home.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't influence my purchase, but it does raise the "value".
ReplyDelete99.9% of the time, they don't. (In fact, I'm getting very tired of tortured puns as shade names, but that's another subject!) Offhand, I can think of only one polish where the name tipped the balance towards buying it, but if it had been a shade I didn't like, it wouldn't have mattered.
ReplyDeleteNot at all. However, I prefer a name rather than just a number or no name. I keep a file on my phone, so I do. Not purchase a shade more than once (unless it is on purpose or a gift).
ReplyDeleteEh. I wouldn't say the names influence my purchase, but they sure can be fun. When I told my 13-year-old son that there exists a baby poop green nail polish called 'Uh-oh Roll Down the Window', he died laughing :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, let's see, I just bought a NYX eyeshadow because it was called "Death Star". I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan so I had to buy it. So yeah, I fall for that every time!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I am definitely pulled in by names! They might not "seal the deal," but they certainly catch my eye!
ReplyDeleteGenerally the names don't influence me at all. I usually have a hard time even remembering the names prior to a purchase. That being said that post purchase I tend to remember them better. I remember in the late 80's being intrigued by Dior's Poison. That is the only name that compelled me to buy it and the fact that I loved it when I tested it. I wore it for years. I liked the idea of wearing poison as much as the scent. People always knew went I had been a room, LOL. It was that unique of a scent and was my signature.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit it, I have looked through online stores searching for products with the name Cosmo (which is the name of my cat)! Most of the time I look at the product first, and if I like the name, it's a bonus.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, it does influence my purchases. I will sometimes buy products just because I love the names.
ReplyDeleteName does not influence my purchase, shade and quality do. However, it annoys me when companies like WnW fail to put the name on the label.
ReplyDeleteShade names have never influenced my purchase.. Something I've never thought about.
ReplyDeleteNot in the slightest, however I do appreciate a creative or cute name. I also prefer names to just numbers alone as it makes it hard for me to remember (I'm just not mathematically inclined.) Like you G., I also recall UD from back in the day, and always thought they were very hip and ahead of their time with the pot references, "dirty, grungy" names etc. I will only be influenced to purchase by name alone for example: Zoya np...if a shade name is the same namesake as a pal I'll gift it to them! :)
ReplyDeleteName doesn't influence my purchase but I will admit, I had to have the ENTIRE Spoiled by Wet n Wild nail polish collection BECAUSE they had the funnest (is that a real word?) names. My daughter thinks they are fun too.
ReplyDeleteA catchy or otherwise meaningful-to-me name can tip the balance in a product's favour if I'm in the mood to buy (especially as a gift!) but I have to actually like the product first.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand though, some names just make me shake my head and walk away. A few NARS products come to mind there. I have nothing bad to say of someone else who owns and wears those particular shades, but I personally just cannot leave the house with a straight face knowing I'm wearing a blush shade named sex fantasy. LOL
Haha, I'm the exact opposite! I bought that blush because of the name! I have this thing about collecting all the ledly named blushes.
DeleteNot at all.
ReplyDeleteI loved Urban Decay Lip Gunk in GASH! Name and color were amazing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes. Since i'm more into polish if something is named after something I love i'm more likely to buy. I bought an entire polish collection because it was Mean Girls based!
ReplyDeleteI do remember I saw a polish in a shop that sort of encouraged domestic violence and on top of that the glitters were black and blue and I marked that shop off my do not ever buy list.
There is a polish company that has very naughty names and some people find it incredibly crass but I LOVE the names.
If you're taking about a polish company that's known for their mattes, I love them too. Lol! But yeah, their names aren't for everyone, that's for sure! ;)
DeleteNo, not swayed by the names, but the packaging, I am def a sucker for cute packages!!
ReplyDeleteNever actually.
ReplyDeleteI'm swayed by names only if I love the name. I've got a WnW nail polish called Metallica. I've never used it, but I love it. And the shade names in TheBalm's Balm Jovi palette were what convinced me to buy it. Oddly enough, that one has a Metallica shade, too. I guess I'm just a metalhead kind of girl.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sucker for cute and quirky names.
ReplyDeleteit can push me over if i'm on the fence but otherwise no influence.
ReplyDeleteThey can, for sure! For example, I only bought the "Like a Boss" shadow crayon from elf because of the name. As another example, I was looking for Coastal Scents hot pots to give my mother as a gift. I was considering giving her "Camel Taupe" but I had recently explained the term camel toe to her so I decided it wouldn't be a good idea :P
ReplyDeleteI was also iffy about getting the Lorac Pro palette partially because the shade names are boring. But I got it recently and I can forgive them because the palette is amazing :D
Cherries in the Snow lipstick . I tried so hard to like. I went through tubes of it since i mostly apply and wiped it off.
ReplyDeleteI've never really thought about this...although I do remember naming my websites after cosmetic shades back when I first started. :P I had a site called Rose Suede and another called Grey Chill.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, not at all. Sorry to the cosmetics naming people out there. I do recall one time buying a Zoya nail polish named Harley just because my cat's name is Harley. That's about it though.
