HOT DEAL ALERT: 60% off Melmers at Michael's for Black Friday

Huge thanks to reader A Mani Maniac for leaving a comment here on the blog today about this one! "Melmers" are going to be 60% off this Thursday and Friday at Michael's:

Michael's Black Friday 2013 Doorbuster (11/28 - 11/29 only)
60% off all Recollections Craft Room Storage (excludes jewelry storage)

If you have no idea what a Melmer is, and why I'm so excited about this sale, keep reading! Otherwise, you can stop right now and just do a little happy dance with me about this one...

In the world of hardcore nail polish fanatics, there are pretty much two standard storage options: the Ikea Helmer and the craft store "Melmer". The "Melmer" is available at other craft stores aside from Michael's, such as Hobby Lobby, but it is affectionately called a "Melmer" because it's like the Ikea Helmer, and you can get it Michael's (that's where the "M" comes in).

If you're serious about your nail polish storage, these two storage systems are great because they'll hold just about every polish brand under the sun, in an upright position. The drawers are tall enough to hold a standard polish bottle, but not so tall that there's a lot of dead space above the bottles (like a regular chest of drawers would have).

  • Helmers are available at Ikea both in-store and online for $39.99 each (assembly required). One Helmer has six drawers and can hold roughly 500 bottles of nail polish.
  • Melmers are available at Michael's (and other craft stores) for $39.99 (assembly required). One Melmer has three drawers and can hold roughly 300 bottles of nail polish.

NOTE: Some people stack their Melmers one on top of the other LIKE THIS to create a 6-drawer storage unit (which will hold roughly 600 polishes).

So let's say that your Michael's has the Melmer for $30 (regular retail price). If you get it during this sale, that brings your cost down to $12. WHAT?!?! Yeah, that's why I'm so excited about this deal.

ONE MORE THING: You cannot use the coupons in the Michael's Black Friday ad toward this deal, because the coupons specifically state "NO  DOORBUSTERS."

Thanks so very much, A Mani Maniac, for the great heads-up about this one! I really appreciate it!

  1. G, can you order these online? Or are these a "in store" only sale?

    1. Great to know (about SD). Thanks! I have a Helmer but I also need about three more (that's what I'm estimating) to hold all of my polish and then have room for future polishes. But even at $16 (for San Diego) that sure beats the price of a Helmer when I can get two for $32 (600 polishes) vs. one Helmer at $39.99 (500 polishes). Yay! :D

  4. ugh I have 4 and I bought two panels to put across them to make a "desk". I really want to get another one but I think my husband will be so upset that I need that much storage for my nail art stuff.

  5. I am outgrowing my two melmers and would love to get another....now where to put it!

  6. I have one of these for my actual scrapbooking stuff, I didn't know people used them for for nail polish haha. I personally like having visible racks to see all the colors.

  7. So, I'll have to go out into the Black Friday fray? Ugh.

  8. I have a couple of hints for those of you who haven't used these yet:

    - These cubes come in a bunch of configurations for craft room storage. You need to make sure to buy the ones with three horizontal drawers.

    - They are very easy to assemble, as long as you don't rush and follow the instructions step by step. If you get to feeling overconfident, you might have the full frame of the drawer assembled and then realize that there's no way to get the bottom in there. Not that that ever happened to me (several times) or anything.

    - After assembling the first one, I realized that a little carpenter's glue helps make them stronger. I squirt a little into the screw/dowel holes and along the grooves.

    - You might see a platform on casters that looks like it would be the most awesome solution to turn your melmer into a rolling cart. If you do this, the bottom drawer won't be able to open. Apparently, the platform is meant for the cubes with an open shelf at the bottom.

    - Although I DO have more nail polish than any normal human probably should, I actually gained most of my experience with assembling these as storage for my crafty hoard :)

    1. This is SO helpful, Cheryl. Thank you for taking the time to write all of that out for us Melmer newbies! :D

    2. Thank you for these tips! ^^ I'm gonna be one of the newbies who try to get this and assemble this myself. Lol

    3. Actually, the rolling platform on wheels DOES work for this if you leave the front part undone(and I'm pick/old so I must say it doesn't look 'unfinished' nor would I accept it if it looked unfinished). My hubby just built it and it's perfect! If you want I can share pics ^.^

  9. How would these work for makeup storage

    1. These work great as makeup storage! I personally have 2 - 2 drawer systems and 2 - 3 drawer systems. Mini plastic separator baskets from various dollar trees and the Container Store are great for makeup storage. Long ones or kitchen utensil separators are great for separating liners/mascaras.

The taller 2 - drawer systems are able to store foundations upright. The 88 shadow palettes are able to stand upright at an slightly tilted angle too. They can hold a lot of the bigger palettes in a neat way.

  10. Just wanted to give you a BIG thank you for the shout out! I am honored! The only thing to note about the melmers is that the bottom drawers have no gliders so they get very hard to pull out when they have a lot of polish in them! I have also found that now that one drawer is completely full of julep polishes, the weight is too much and the bottom is bending. So you have to be careful with them!

  11. I have avoided something like this and have all my polish in a rubbermaid bin. I really want one especially now that i know there is one similar to the Helmer. I live about 5 hours from the closest IKEA. The only thing is now my husband will know just how much polish I have. Mr. Judgemental will let me hear it when he finally ever figures it out! LOL

  12. Oh wow, I've been looking for a new storage solution for my now growing nail polish collection as well as my makeup! This sounds like just the ticket!

  13. Hmmm....shopping at IKEA at my leisure, versus the terrifying thought of going to a craft store on Black Friday.
I wonder if they'll sell out on Thursday since they open at 4pm. I wish stores wouldn't do that.
Still, good to know G--for a time when I have a coupon and it's not Black Friday!

    1. I have been to Michael's before on Thanksgiving night. It wasn't bad at all. Trust me, I was nervous about it too just because I don't like shopping in huge crowds, feeling rushed, etc., but the Michael's in my area was pretty calm.

  14. There is another option for nail polish fanatics but it isn't any cheaper. It is the IKEA Tall Alex. It is 9 drawers and $119. That is what I have and it is sad to say that I also have a IKEA Helmer that I'm about to have to bust into for polish storage instead of just stamping/stone/accessory storage. Oh the life of a polish hoarder. :)

  15. I've heard of the Helmer, but not the Melmer. LOL. BUT I WANT THIS.

I guess I'm gonna have to get up early on Friday and find my local Michael's.

    Thanks for the info, G!

  16. I picked two of these up a long time ago for craft supply storage and they ended up with all my polishes in them! How funny...

  19. OMG! I'm having a moment...I'm OK now. I was so excited when I saw this posted in a group on FB...I am trying to see who mentioned it, but for the life of me can't find the darn post!

I don't want to get a helmer - too big. I've been wanting a melmer for so long, but couldn't justify the price. SOOOO excited about this sale!

  20. OK people don't pee your pants like I almost did just now, but there is an ADDITIONAL 30% off coupon for SALE items for today (Thursday). For the SD price that would make ONE Melmer (GULP) $11.20. OMG! I am PRAYING my hubby will follow through and stop on his way home from work tonight since Michaels is 30 min away. I asked for two and wouldn't mind THREE. HEHEHE Go to their website to get the coupon to send to your phone to use at checkout (additional 25% off on Friday and Saturday if you don't make it today btw). Hopefully this link works. If not, just type in "coupons" in the search on Michaels.com

  23. Is this the letterpress cube? That was the only 3 drawer item they had at my Michaels. I'm confused since you don't seem to specify which type of cube style it is. Please help!

    2. It is NOT the Letterpress cube. You need to find the Drawer Cube. The Letterpress Cube (which I bought) does not work for nail polish. It is a good thing an extra storage bin always comes in handy!

  24. Thanks for the tip G! I rushed through the door when they opened and snagged three of these and one of the four square drawer cubes! Though I didn't need to since no one else wanted them haha. I just need to make a tabletop and then I'll have a new vanity! My vanity right now is overflowing and it's really sad.

  25. I am super stocked up now. I bought 2 on Wednesday here in Canadaland for $19.99/ea (from $50) and managed to fit about 4/5ths of my nail polishes in 1 cube. Then I realized they also fit my Cocoa Pink Ends with Benefits spray bottles, and that the cubes were on sale for just that one more day, so I went back and bought what was left last night, 2 more! $200 worth of storage for $80 :) Thanks for the heads-up!
