Spotted: NEW Revlon Limited Edition Art Major Chalkboard Nail Art Collection

Well what do we have here? Not exactly a dupe for the Ciaté Chalkboard Manicure Kit ($25 at Sephora), but the same concept, and much more affordable (and accessible)! Reader Megan spotted this new Revlon display at CVS today and was nice enough to share a pic:

Revlon Limited Edition Art Major Chalkboard Nail Art Collection
(retail: $8.99 at CVS)

As I was working on this post, reader Lori also shared some pics of this display (which I'll show you in a second).that she spotted at her CVS. So it looks like this collection is starting to pop up at CVS first (I haven't heard from anyone who has spotted it elsewhere...yet).

NOTE: the Revlon nail polish sale at CVS runs through Saturday, 8/10 (ALL Revlon polishes are $4.99 and you get $3 back in Extra Bucks. The limit on this offer is six.). Both Megan and Lori confirmed that these Chalkboard polishes ARE included in this sale so, if you want them, get out to your local CVS stores by tomorrow and look for this display!

Keep reading for more details and pics...

"Master the trend with a matte base and pop of pastel"

The concept is pretty simple: One end contains a black matte polish (both Megan and Lori said that this black matte polish is opaque after two coats). On the other end you have a pastel shade with a thinner brush for nail art designs ("chalk" for your "chalkboard").

A closer look at SIX of the EIGHT pastel shades (there's also a blue and a yellowish-green):

Lori said that the black matte shade has a wonderful consistency (again, opaque at two coats). She also said that the thin brush on the pastel shades would work well for nail art.

So...what do we think of these limited edition Chalkboard polish duos? Do you think you'll give them a shot? Of course the same look could be achieved by applying a regular black matte polish to your nails and then following up with a pastel nail art polish, but I do like the convenience of having everything all together (and especially for $1.99 after rewards if you buy these at CVS before the sale ends Saturday night!).

Thanks SO much, Megan and Lori, for the great sighting, photos and info. I really appreciate it!

  2. It's encouraging to see polishes like this going mainstream. I've been let down by the quality of Relvon--it bubbles on me something fierce, so I don't know if I'll buy these. Plus I have 500 other polishes at home I should be using instead of buying more. LOL! Thanks for your post. I love your blog.

    1. Oh, I totally agree on the quality factor. I find that the classic line of polish is terrible...takes forever to dry, bubbles, gloopy texture. I've had good luck with the Colorstay, Top Speed, and Brilliant or whatever its called lines. Never been a fan of matte, but in this case (chalkboard) it seems just right, I like it!

    2. I have at least 20 Revlon polishes, and have never experienced the bubbling problems you describe. I guess the formula varies for everyone depending on their chemistry.

  5. Cool/cute idea...but I don't think it's for me. It'd be cute for kids, though!

  6. They look cool, but I'm gonna pass. You'll probably run out of the black long before the color, and you'll still be stuck with needing two bottles to get the same look. The pastels are really pretty though.

    1. If you ran out of black you could always just use a regular black and top it with a matte top coat (NYC makes one for $0.99 that I've reviewed here... it's awesome!). :)

    2. it must be good because I can never ever find it!

    3. FYI, Sally Girl now makes a matte topcoat in their 99 cent line. So if you can't find the NYC, you can try that one. It's only 5 ml compared to the full sized NYC, but it's also half the price. HTH! :)

    4. I just got back from another Sally's Beauty Supply, where I talked to a sales associate. Turns out, the matte topcoat from Sally Girl is a monthly offer thing, it will not be available in the permanent collection after August. They should have little bins with it next to the register during this month, though.

  7. am I the only one who hates matte polish?

    1. No, I'm sure there are plenty of others. For every polish trend, there are some who love it and others who don't.

  8. Oh dear I say this all the time but I.Must. Have this!!!!! Since it has only so far shown up at CVS I am expect it will be awhile before I find it!

  9. Wow this looks awesome! I want to find those in stores around where I live, I will definitely scoop a few up!

  10. I'm not sure whether or not I'll be picking one of these up. On the one hand, I'm curious to try the look and these sets seem to offer a convenient way to try it. On the other hand, it's a bit expensive, and the tubes are not the most best in terms of ease of storage and use.

Curious people can also use a matte topcoat like NYC Matte Me Crazy over a black, and then try applying the pastel with a small nail art brush or toothpick.

  11. I'll definitely try one! I'd thought about getting the Ciate set, but the price held me back, as well as the reviews stating that people had a lot of trouble with the pens in some cases.

  12. Ohhh! I'd love to see some swatches. I'll be on the lookout for these.

  13. I did not find these yesterday. I'm sure they will be available at my CVS stores soon. However, your post did get me to venture to some further stores. I found the Nail Art and the Expressionist colors that I was missing in my collection. Thanks G!

  14. I probably will pick one up, either Over-Achiever or Study Date. Way cheaper than the Ciate kit which I've been lusting over hard. I would prefer a set with more than 1 pastel color, but for the drugstore, I'll take it!

  15. It's convenient and I'm glad to hear the consistency is good. (Since I've found other 'trendy' Revlons to be awful...*milky glitter rage") But I'd want aaall the colors even though I own a ton of pastels, black, and matte tc.
