Sinful Colors

This is a new year, and it's time for a fresh start with Sinful Colors. After much contemplation, I've decided to start covering Sinful Colors products again here on Nouveau Cheap.

More after the jump...

In an effort to avoid turning this into a novel, here's a summary for you:

Last year, after this happened, I decided to show solidarity with my fellow beauty bloggers and stop covering Sinful Colors here on the blog. Many of you were supportive of this decision, and those who didn't agree were generally very understanding with my reasons. This was always about supporting my fellow bloggers, and I feel that not covering Sinful Colors was showing, in some small part, that I was behind them in hoping for a fair resolution to this issue.

In the months that have passed, all of the bloggers involved have since removed their original posts, and I'm assuming they've all come to an agreement with the brand (I do not personally know any of the bloggers, so again I'm merely assuming that something was worked out). And I have not heard of any other incidents since the last time I blogged about the brand here.

Like I said at the beginning of this post, this is a new year, and I want to turn over a new leaf with a brand that I have loved for many, many years (literally, since the early 1990s--you can see pics of the original Sinful Colors bottle style here, which I still own). I realize that I'm opening myself up to criticism for this decision, but that's just it--it's my decision. You're free to express your feelings about my decision here, but please do so in a polite manner if you're going to leave a comment (otherwise, it won't be approved).

In the online beauty community there are things uncovered on a regular basis that may give you, the consumer, pause and make you reconsider your support of a brand. I'm not here to pass judgement on what you buy, or don't buy, and I hope you'll do the same for me. We all have our convictions and in fact, my good friend Phyrra just posted a fantastic piece about this very topic here: When Does a Stand Become a Grudge? It's a complex issue and one that none of us here will ever agree upon 100%. But that's the beauty of this community, right? It's diverse and filled with differing opinions and that's what makes reading beauty blogs such a dynamic, informative and rewarding experience for all of us who share this passion.

That said, I'm not going to try and play catch-up on everything I've missed since I've "been away." I know that Sinful Colors has revamped their website and released more makeup offerings (lip and eye colors) as well as lot of new polishes since I've been gone. I'll just be posting about anything new that I see from this point forward (starting with my very next post) and if you'd like to share any "must-haves" that you've found in the past several months, I'd love to hear about them. Oh, and by the way, a kind reader on Facebook just informed me that Sinful Colors has released a new collection of pastels--have any of you seen this collection yet?

Thanks so much for your understanding, and also thanks for taking the time to read this.

  1. I'm so happy! I understood your choice, and I have been able to snag some great polishes during everyone's strike, lol. BUt I really rely on your blog to see new displays, then run all over town like a mad woman scooping up polishes. No judgement from this lacquer fiend right here!

  2. As much as I hated what happened, I have missed seeing your posts about Sinful Colors :)

  3. I have to admit I've missed seeing your Sinful Colors posts. I wish there would have been some statement from SC -- aside from what Revlon posted in apology -- saying they at least paid the bloggers affected for their photos, but maybe they'll do better from now on, considering all the fuss it generated. Despite it all, they do have some great polishes, and I'm always looking for something new, especially each time I enter a Walgreens.

  4. Yes! This is where I fell inlove with the brand ( your post about the color nirvana) and its been so hard to keep up with new collections and such since I had no idea where to look! I say walgreens should have a 99cent sale to celebrate! Lol. Btw if you find any info on the shade endless blue or aubergine that would be nice lol

  6. So glad SC will be back on your radar! I haven't purchased any since the blogger ban as I felt like I wasn't being supportive. Cannot wait to get back to it! Welcome back Sinful Colors!

  7. I've been wondering about this. I've held off on purchasing from them because I want to hear that the issue has been made right with the bloggers that were impacted. Any ideas how I might find out? Has anyone posted a synopsis?

  8. I totally respect you and hear you out on this choice. I personally have decided to not buy anything from SC just because it's something I choose. But I can totally understand why you would want to give them another chance, and why you would want to cover them on your blog again. I'll defineitly still enjoy your posts about SC too :)

  9. I'm so glad that you've decided to cover new SC collections again! They are one of my very favorite brands and I've missed your posts about them :)

  10. Makes sense to me, I think you've been very thoughtful about the whole thing.

The new pastel collection is called Sugar Rush - I have the shade names on my blog & a display photo.

  11. so glad you've decided to start posting about Sinful colors again, your posts about new collections are why I started following your blog in the first place!

The pastel collection is called Sugar Rush - I just picked up 4 of the 8. There's Sugar 'n Spice (very similar to cream pink), Candy Coated (bluish purple), Cotton Candy (pale pink), Unicorn (repromote), Sweet Nothing (teal, wouldn't consider it pastel at all), Sweet Tooth (pinkish purple), Sugar Rush (pale blue), and Orange Cream... that one's pretty self explanatory haha!

ALSO Start looking for the St. Patrick day display - they brought back Green Ocean... I may have bought all 5 left in the display today. :)

  12. Thank you for linking to my post! It's such a complex topic. I feel you should feel however you choose about the issue and decide to support (or not support) as you see fit. No one has the right to tell you that you must or must not support someone. I think it's good to see you giving Sinful another chance and I can understand others who don't want to give them another chance.

  13. Good news, G! I've missed your Sinful Colors posts, although I completely understand why you abstained. And as always, you're so very considerate to everyone's feelings about the issue. Can't wait to see new displays here first!

  14. THANK YOU! I have missed your SC posts SO much! It's been difficult for me to keep up with the new colors as I haven't been able to find a blog that kept up to date with SC as well as you did. I understood your original decision, but am very glad SC will be featured on your blog again. :)

  15. After all these months I still don't know how I feel about the situation. One hand Sinful Colors stole from bloggers which is wrong and a crime but on the other hand they are a great brand that sell amazing products for a good price. I understand people not buying their polishes for a couple weeks but I wouldn't thrown out the polishes that I spent money on. My feeling are still contradicted.

  16. A very thoughtful and mature post. I'm thinking that SC has learned their lesson!

  17. I think this is a good decision. A lot of beauty companies have messed up over the past year and I think most of them have made amends. One blogger pointed out (maybe it was you?) that the people who do marketing or social media are often interns who are overworked or underpaid and/or people who just flat out made a mistake. I don't think any company is trying to take advantage of bloggers or be evil. They just make mistakes. As long as they own up and don't repeat them, I don't think they should be blacklisted.

You and other bloggers who talk about these kinds of things bring attention to them and help the problem get resolved. And when it's resolved favorably (I'm going to assume it was if the bloggers effected have taken their posts down) then, imo, the company deserves some credit again.

  18. Blah. I continued to buy Sinful polishes as soon as I heard that they had reached out to those bloggers to try to fix things. I think people were overreacting, other than the bloggers whose work was stolen themselves.

Sinful had about half a dozen new shades in their core display at Walgreens today! Including a blue that looked like Essie Butler Please to my eye. They also had a couple pretty purples, an awesome looking super fine silver glitter with I think green and pink glitters in it. A few colors from the Winter collection like Superstar and that one with silver and blue glitter. And I can't remember what else. XD Since they're core I'm waiting for the next $.99 sale to pick them up.

  19. I'm so sorry, I just realized my last comment may have come off as rude to you and anyone else who did stop buying Sinful polishes. I think it's fine that some people boycotted, I just got annoyed when I saw comments online criticizing people who did keep buying their polishes. I think it was up to each individual person to make their own decision about it and then leave other people to make theirs, just like you did. I respected your decision and the way you handled it. :D

  20. I respected ur decision and I'm glad u will be covering sinful colors again. I can't wait to see what's in store =) thanks!

  21. I dont think its ok what they did but they do make some of my favorite polishes so even after playing catch up what happened i still bought them. It wil lbe nice to be able to find swatch pics again.

  22. I respect your opinion but it doesn't bother me one way or the other.

  23. YAY!! So glad you're going to start covering Sinful again. They're still one of my favorite brands, despite what happened. I miss coming here to get info on new collections. I feel like I've been falling behind since you weren't covering their new releases anymore.

FYI - some people have already spotted Green Ocean in the St. Patrick's Day display. :)

  24. Boycott aside, does anyone else have issues with the Sinful Colors formula? I only have 2 colors, but both chip/show tip wear in 1 day! And they shrink pretty badly with quick-dry topcoats. Or did I just pick out some lemons?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Try wrapping your tips to prevent shrinkage. Do you use basecoat? sometimes a certain basecoat will not be compatible with a brand of polish/ your body chemistry, and make that polish chip instead of helping it stay. It might take some experimenting!

I've never really had a problem with sinful chipping, but I rarely wear any polish for more than 2-3 days anyway. :)

    2. After being in the nail community a while, I've come to the conclusion that everyone has polishes that work or don't work for their nails. I've heard of other people who have a problem with SC polishes' wear time, but for me, they wear well and don't chip. I agree with KD, try them with a base coat and keep experimenting. Since they are often on sale for 99 cents, giving them another try is worth a shot!

    3. I wrap my nails, both polish and topcoat, and I do use a basecoat. Although sometimes I don't.

That is probably true about polishes working for some people and not others. I get incredible wear (at least a week with minimal to no tipwear) from Chanel polishes (especially without a basecoat), and I know some people claim they chip like crazy.

  25. To be totally honest I had completely forgotten about the ban...I love Sinful Colors nail polishes and yes it is a real shame what happened but i agree that if the bloggers were reached out to then that is where it should end.I am very glad you decided to cover these again :)

  26. Add me to the list of people who's glad you're covering Sinful again! I have heard that their new matte coat is comparable to NYC's and that Green Ocean is starting to show up already. Hana is right, I have also spotted their revamped core displays with Super Star, Ice Dream and a dark Butler, Please type of blue in them.

  27. I agree, G! SC may ve done an awful thing, but... this is my new favorite brand. The event aside, SC is too fantastic in other areas to leave it for long.
