The Wednesday Question

What tricks do you use to keep your makeup from sliding off/disappearing in hot weather?

June is when I traditionally start to wear my Holy Grail face primer on a more consistent basis. I also switch to a lighter moisturizer and tend to use powder foundation instead of liquids, mousses or creams. I also try to be more consistent with oil-blotting sheets and applying powder touch-ups throughout the day.

  1. I switch to a lighter moisturizer and lighter foundation. Set with powder and just blot throughout the day. Sometimes I'll powder but more often then not I try not to...don't want that cakey face. I also try to keep the overall makeup light.

  2. I also think powder mineral foundation lasts a lot longer than liquid during the summer (I swear by Meow Cosmetics foundation) and I also use All-Nighter makeup setting spray.

  3. When I know I'll be outside and sweating but still want to wear makeup, I use a lighter moisturizer with a high SPF, no concealer, and The Body Shop's All In One Face Base, since it's a powder that doesn't make my dry skin look cakey. I bring it with me and can touch up on the go, but it doesn't look unnatural or weird if it starts wearing off through the day and I can't get to it; I just get less coverage and flaws begin showing through, if that makes sense. I also swear by Make Up For Ever's Aqua Creams for my eyes; they're pricey, but a little goes a long way and they stay put like nobody's business, and can work as a base for other powder shadows, as well as a sheer wash of color on their own. I do tend to go for a much lighter, more natural look that doesn't require as much touching up (or offer as much potential for a meltdown disaster)!

  4. I don't have any good tips but I look forward to reading all the tips here. I've moved to a way more humid part of Canada (plus I have oily skin) and I'm debating on whether or not to invest in a primer or setting spray (Face Atelier's Ultra Matte Spray) or both. What I used to do before (lighter moisturizer and adding a setting powder) I don't think is gonna cut it here. Great question, G.

  5. Primers are the biggest thing. Milk of magnesia, Black Radiance complexion perfection for face (only if you are super oily- we are talking heavy duty here. If you are combo I would suggest the BR only on your problem areas). UDPP, Palladio for eyes. I find the best results with a lightweight, long lasting foundation that sets (I prefer Rimmel 25hr, or Revlon new complexion compact creme) and no powder, except for maybe a little bit under the eyes if you need to set concealer. The powder just gets cakey in the heat, and if you are using powder blush/bronzer/highlight you are going to set a lot of your face anyway. If you do have issues throughout the day blot, but don't pack on the powder. If it's super hot and humid you are going to be "glowy" no matter what, better to be glowy in a nice way, than glowy in patches and cakey everywhere else, lol. Everyone seems to go BB creme or tinted moisturizer in the summer, but it makes little sense to me to put even more moisture and a less stable product on skin that is even more oily than usual, just adds to the problem. Try one of the newer liquid sunscreens, I like the Neutrogena ones... they sink right in and have a matte finish, none of that greasy feel of most sunscreens, work very well under makeup and actually work quite well as a primer if the weather is nicer or you are not as oily as I am.

I find a good eye base helps tremendously, I like either Maybelline color tattoo, Milani shadow eyez, or Palladio eye crayons, none of them move in the heat. Go easy on the liner and heavy on the mascara.. and consider tightlining vs. lining on top or under the eye. Make sure to use a shadow on the lower lashline, even if it is skin toned.. helps keep product from migrating under the eye. Go with a lighter consistency concealer, the creamy ones melt easier (Maybelline erasers are a good choice), and I like to put some under the foundation as well, locks it in and helps it stay. I find powder blushes, bronzers, etc last longer than cremes.

  6. I use a high-coverage mineral foundation. That way, I can use just a thin layer of product and not skimp on coverage. I don't believe in trading in regular foundation for tinted moisturizer like most people recommend - you're getting less coverage but more oils and moisture that make my face a mess.

  7. Too be honest, I just wear a whole lot less makeup. A bit of concealer and Wet and Wild cream blush in 722A. That stays on me like nothing else. Also I may add some bronzer. That is it. However for vacation this year I will be looking for a waterproof eyebrow pencil (or any other form)in a light brown. Any ideas anyone?

    1. I have no idea if it is waterproof, but I have really been loving the Revlon brow fantasy, and have had no trouble with it moving or fading. I've tried three different colors and they all look natural on me, which is astonishing because I have the worst time finding any brow product that looks natural on me. The pencil is a different texture, very smooth and soft, yet does not put down a lot of color at once so you can build the color as you desire, and no problems with spottiness or chunkiness which I have found with most other products.

I wonder if the Milani brow pens are waterproof? A quick google search showed that makeup for ever, tarte, and stila all have waterproof options... but of course they are pretty expensive.

  8. I don't wear any. Seriously. I haven't put on mascara in about a week. If I have to wear makeup, I only wear it at night. Otherwise, it's just sunscreen and maybe a Fyrinnae finishing powder if I feel like it.
