I'm kind of the queen of leave-in conditioners, and I'm not saying that to brag (is that really something worth bragging about?). What I mean is that I've been using leave-ins for decades, due to the nature of my hair, so I have quite a bit of experience with this type of product.
I have long hair that's fine in texture but I have a lot of it. I also have naturally wavy hair that tends to get frizzy, with lots of flyaways, if I don't use something after I wash and condition. Smoothing oils are a new love of mine, but a good leave-in is like a broken-in pair of sweatpants for me. Nothing feels quite as comfortable or reliable for my hair type as a leave-in conditioner, so when I was sent the new Suave Keratin Infusions Heat Defense Leave-In a while back, I couldn't wait to start testing it. Now that I've been using it for over a month, I'd love to share my thoughts with you:

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I thought I'd show you what my hair looked like when I used this product on just one side of my hair:
Left side: WITH
Right side: WITHOUT
For this experiment, I applied Suave Keratin Infusion Leave-In Conditioner to just one side of my hair and then straightened my (naturally wavy) hair using a paddle brush and a hair dryer.
Note: I don't like using a flat iron (in fact, I don't even own one) because I don't like my hair stick-straight. I have a natural wave that provides some nice bounce when I use a paddle brush to straighten it, so I prefer that method so that my long layers give my hair some "swing".
Looking at the pic above, I think you can see that Suave Keratin Infusion Leave-In gives my hair a sleek look, and it really enhances my layers. I think it makes my hair soft, but not too soft, and it gives it just the perfect amount of body and texture. Looking at the other side of my hair, you can see that my hair looks flat, lifeless and also frizzy.

See how much SMOOTHER this product makes my hair? It's kind of incredible, the way that it helps straighten my hair, yet manages to keep the volume and body.

In all honesty, I don't really like to straighten my hair. I find it to be a chore, and I usually prefer to let my hair air-dry and rock my natural waves. But this product has made me fall in love with straightening my hair again--the results have been incredible for me.
The fragrance of this product is quite pleasant. It's got a fresh, clean, slightly floral scent to it that I like very much. The texture of the product is sort of a cross between a cream and a gel. It's what I would call a lightweight cream--very easy to work into the hair; not too thick and not too watery.
I REALLY love the fact that, even though I have oily hair, this product doesn't make my hair greasy by the end of the day. In fact, I can skip a day of washing and my hair still looks pretty good (a small miracle). I'd say the only thing I don't like (and this is a minor complaint) is that this product decreases the natural shine of my hair a tiny bit. It's not dramatic, though--maybe a decrease of about 20%--and I think it's a fair trade-off for the smooth, sleek look that I'm able to achieve whenever I use this product.
FINAL VERDICT: If you straighten your hair and you're interested in trying a super-affordable product that will make your hair softer and smoother, Suave Keratin Infusion Leave-In Conditioner might be just the ticket. I don't know what this product will be like if you use a flat iron (again, I don't own one so I couldn't tell you), but if you use a paddle brush and hair dryer to style your hair, I think you might be very pleased with the results. For me, it provides just the perfect amount of control and moisture, without making my hair feel weighed down or greasy. The proof is really in the photos--this product works so well for me that I can tell you I'll reach for it every single time I decide to straighten my hair.

I actually don't like how this smells. You should try to Dove Nutri-Oil one. I love that one, and it smells amazing! I use these products just after I shower, and I don't blow dry my hair. I just let it air dry.
ReplyDeleteI actually reviewed that product here. LOL! And while I LOVE the shampoo and conditioner from the Dove Nutritive Oil line, I actually prefer the Suave Keratin Infusion Leave-In to the Dove one (I do like the Dove one though). Glad it works for you!
DeletePS: I like the scent of the Suave leave-in more than the Dove leave-in. Go figure! ;)
i also got this leave in conditioner with the free coupon i got in the mail too. I really like it! i put it on after towel drying my hair then add some suave whipped mousse for curly hair then blow dry. leaves my hair looking great! nice wavy/curls! i absolutely LOVE suave styling products!
ReplyDeleteoh wow I can't wait to try that combo! I love that mousse too! I reviewed it a while back :-)
DeleteI use the same combination and LOVE it! G, I bought the Suave Whipped Mousse because you reviewed it :) I love both together so much! Such a great purchase and for so cheap!
DeleteOooh, you do too?? That settles it! I'm trying this combo tomorrow! Lol! Thanks :)
DeleteYour hair looks gorgeous!
ReplyDeletethank you so much, sweetie! I really appreciate that :-)
DeleteI might have to try this. With summer coming, I can straighten my hair without worrying about it becoming frizzy from the humidity. I dry it with a huge ceramic round brush and my hair dryer. I also use a flat iron and iron it so the ends of my hair flip out.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to know what you think if you do :-)
DeleteHow much of the leave in would you say you used? It seems to me that a dime sized amount would be too little for those of us with long hair. I love leave in's but sometimes I think I go overboard in the amount that I put in. Just curious, your hair did turn out excellent though, I normally use the Dove nutri oil one, but now I think I will switch since I bought the shampoo/conditioner from the Suave Keratin line, and adding the leave in might just give me the supermodel hair I've been dying to have, lol!
ReplyDeleteI have long hair down to about the middle of my back, and I used about a quarter size amount last night. I also use the Suave Keratin shampoo and conditioner and the leave in, and I love it!
DeleteI use a little less than Kari...about a nickle sized amount. But it's always trial and error for me when I use new products...start small and if that doesn't work, add a little bit more the next time.
DeleteOMG I'm sold. Definetly going to buy this soon to try it! I have your same problem my hair is to my waist, its naturaly wavy and its so frizzy its crazy. I say It just embraze its Lion King status... LOL! I usualy spend like 2 hrs styling it and I'm getting tired of it. I use a Round brush to blow dry it and the flat iron it. How do you dry it with the paddle brush?
ReplyDeleteLol! I can't use round brushes, they always get tangled in my hair (user error). So that's why I use a paddle brush...it works better for me personally.
DeleteI use the Suave Keratin Infusion shampoo, conditioner and leave-in. Love them all!! They are the most comparable thing I have found to Redken Allsoft - and SO much more affordable! The Suave makes my hair super soft. I have pretty much the same hair type as you although mine is frizzier and I have no option but to straighten. But I do love that the leave-in has heat protectant so that makes me feel better about all the heat I use.
ReplyDeleteGreat review!
thank you! And I'm so glad to hear that these products work so well for you :-)
DeleteDarn darn darn! Wish I had held off on buying my go to Garnier Fructis leave in conditioner! I just bought it (I have been using it for years) but I find it doesnt help out much in the straightening dept. Just helps me get thru the tangles...oh well next time I need to buy I am totally trying this one! I love Suave and alway use the hair products!
ReplyDeleteAaaaw, well there's always next time! :-)
DeleteI too love this product! A few months ago I bought the Keratin Infusion Straightening System and absolutely love it! I have somewhat medium to fine naturally curly hair and have spent many years going through numerous leave-ins, anti-frizz serums and the like and I love what Suave has done. I use a flat iron on my hair and it makes it so soft, smooth, and shiny it's amazing! It also really provides good heat protection and I find that I'm also able to go a day without washing my hair and it will still be straight and frizz free.
ReplyDeletethanks for all the great feedback!! I'm so happy to hear that these products work so well for you :-)
DeleteI alternate between using a flat iron and a hair drier myself, it all depends on how much time I have. But I think I'll give this a try.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what you think if you try them :-)
DeleteRandom question: What color is it? I'm always on the look out for products for my mom, who has silver hair. Any hair products with a yellowish tint will make her hair yellow. Her hair is fine/prone to frizz, and gets greasy easily, so this looks like it would work well.
ReplyDeleteI saw you had a post about Giovanni Eco Chic a while ago. I've been using the blowout styling mist (http://www.giovannicosmetics.net/item.asp?prodtype=2CHIC&category=2CHIC&model=2CHIC&item=2CHIC-BLOWOUT-4) and love it. I don't know if adding this to my hair dryer routine would be product overkill or not.
it's a basic white, opaque cream. it should work fine for your mom :)
Deleteand thanks for all the great feedback!
Hey G! How does it do when you apply then leave to air dry?
ReplyDeleteyou know, I haven't tried it that way yet! Since it's a heat defense product, I've only used it when I know I'm going to use a hair dryer. Sorry!
DeleteI can answer this! I've been using this product since it hit the shelf as I was dying to find a leave in product that didn't weigh my super fine/frizzy/curly hair down. It fulfills all expectations whether I dry straight or curly. Long story short, I used it when I didn't have access to a hair dryer, and my hair was still as weightless as if I'd blow-dried it upside down (like usual.) My curls were well-defined and loose, so I'd assume that naturally straight hair would retain its same state.
DeleteIt also has a very very fine gold sheen to it.. as I discovered when a bit had dried on my white counter.
Good review - I may try this soon! BTW, your hair looks gorgeous even without the product...lucky! ;)
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love this product....everyone else must have jumped on the bandwagon, I haven't been able to purchase more for over 2 weeks @ a variety of local stores :( I guess i will just keep trying!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteG, I wanted to recommend a hair brush to you that I recently purchased and love. I use it when blowdrying my hair upside down. It's called Hoopla and it's a vented paddle brush to help dry the hair faster. I bought it at Sally's for around $6. Love it!!
ReplyDeleteI have noticed slight frizz and I am going to buy the leave-in conditioner tomorrow!
G, and anyone else who has used both...I was just curious how you think this compares to the Dove Nutri-Oil one? I compared the ingredients in the store and they are almost identical... I think the placement of one or two ingredients was swapped (one before the other on one, one after on the other, if that makes sense...) and I think the only difference was the Suave one had keratin, which I guess could possibly make a big difference, but it was farther down on the ingredient list, so not sure it would be enough to make that big of a difference...? Thanks for any info!
ReplyDeleteHi I just bought this a few days ago, as its now being promoted in my country, you said you use it while heat styling which I dont like to do as I'm trying to bring the health back into my hair, which is kinda why I jumped at the cheap drugstore version to try this new Keratin scene. Do you find you get the same results without using heat or should I leave it for that and find a different leave-in conditioner? Any recommendations?
ReplyDeleteI am addicted to flat irons so leave in conditioners are a must! I have thick curly hair. I looove this product!! With the flat iron my hair has shine and no flyaways. Also my flat iron does leave my hair pin straight so I tend to tease it a bit but this product styles it its weird lol anyway another product you must try is tresemme keratin shampoo n conditioner I use that with the the suave n my hair looks professionally done. On a side note for girls with thin hair my daughter has thin hair when I straighten it and this has been the only product not to leave it looking greasy
