Review: Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses

Layered and swirled glosses are not new inventions, of course, but when they're adorable, taste delicious and retail for $2.99, well who can resist?

Almost exactly one year ago to date, I posted about some limited edition Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny glosses that were popping up at Walgreens. That collection never did make it to my local Walgreens, but I haven't been able to get these glosses out of my head since I first posted those pics.

Well a few weeks ago I discovered that Jordana now has the Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses for sale on their website, and they're part of their CORE collection! Some of the flavors and shades are different than the original limited edition collection, but the one I wanted the very most, Rainbow Sherbet, is part of the core collection, which pretty much made my day.

Jordana sent me the collection recently for review, and I'm so excited to share my thoughts with you!

Jordana Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses
(retail: $2.99 each, 0.47 oz)

Rainbow Sherbet

Let's start with Rainbow Sherbet, since that's the one I've been pining over for a year.

As you can see, this a layered gloss, which means you have to work through each layer to get to the next color. If you're not terribly concerned with color and just like the idea of getting six shades in one tube, this would be a fun choice. As you can see in the swatch above, the first "level" is a sheer, milky pink (there is no shimmer to any of the shades in this tube--they're all cremes). The pink shade has a tiny bit of color to it, but pretty much looks like a colorless, milky shade on my lips.

But the flavor and fragrance. Oh my! Jordana really knows how to make delicious glosses (I know I'm not alone in this opinion because I've heard many of you say the same thing) and Rainbow Sherbet totally exceeded my expectations.

You know how some inexpensive glosses that claim to be flavored just end up tasting like a generic berry? NOT the case with these. Rainbow Sherbet actually tastes like rainbow sherbet ice cream. Fruity, creamy, and sherbet-y. And it smells like rainbow sherbet too.

 Sugar Pie

 Sweet Dessert

Sugar Pie and Sweet Dessert are the most pigmented glosses in the bunch. They are not layered glosses--they're swirled. This means that the two shades that are in the tube are going to be dispensed from the tube at the same time, creating a swirled effect on the lips.

The light and dark shades in Sugar Pie swirl together to create a shimmery bronze that would probably veer toward a shimmery nude on more pigmented lips. The flavor and fragrance remind me of sweet maple donuts. Delish.

Sweet Dessert, with its coral and pink swirls, smells and tastes like strawberry shortcake to me. Color-wise, it's my favorite of the bunch. Here it is on my lips:

My pic doesn't do this one justice. On my lips, it's a beautiful, warm coralish-pink with lots of sparkle. You can see more of the pink on the lower portion of my lip.

 Frosted Strawberry

Raspberry Sorbet

Frosted Strawberry is another layered gloss, so what you see above is just the first layer. Eventually you'll hit pastel pink, and then a brighter hot pink, and then the colors repeat so you'll hit the shimmery white again. This gloss smells and tastes exactly like strawberry frosting to me. I'd probably eat it if I could.

Raspberry Sorbet is a swirled gloss, and the two shades (red and clear with golden shimmer) create a very pretty sheer red. This one smells and tastes exactly as you'd hope it would: just like raspberry sorbet.

Application, texture and staying power: All five glosses in this collection contain a standard slanted plastic applicator. The texture of these glosses don't really vary from shade to shade: they all feel the same on my lips (the ones with sparkle don't feel gritty). These glosses have a tiny bit of stickiness to them, but it's nothing close to say, a MAC Lipglass. They don't feel overly heavy or thick on my lips, and I haven't noticed any drying or chapping on my lips since I've been using them. In fact, I'd say they're even a touch moisturizing. As with most glosses of this nature, I can get about 1-2 hours of wear from these (but remember, I'm a chronic gloss-eater and these babies are just too tempting).

FINAL VERDICT: If you're looking for some cute, fun, new flavored glosses to add to your stash, I think these are a great deal at $2.99 each. I don't think you'll find more a delicious tasting or smelling gloss at this price point. But if you're looking for a gloss that's big on color, these probably aren't for you. They're all pretty sheer, with the swirled glosses being the most pigmented of the bunch.

Sadly, the Sweet 'n Shiny Flavored Lip Glosses are not going to be part of the newly revamped Jordana displays at Walgreens, however you can purchase them online, and don't forget to check your local beauty supplies that sell Jordana. You might get lucky and spot these (and if you do, I'd suggest picking up Rainbow Sherbet and Sweet Dessert!).
