I've got a fun question for you this week, lovelies, so I hope you'll take a moment to leave your answer in the comments!
Have you ever been compelled to purchase a beauty product because of its name (product name or shade name)?
As much as it pains me to admit this: guilty as charged! I have purchased countless color cosmetics based, in part, because of their names. Of course I also have to at least like the color of the product, but a fun, cute name never hurts! Recently I was drawn to the LA Colors Trio in Lemon Grove because it's a city in San Diego. Also, I remember buying Sweetie Pie and Triple Yum from the Maybelline 2010 Sweet Thing collection because I thought the names were adorable (the colors were pretty too, though). So, are you guilty of doing this? And if so, can you think of any products you've purchased, at least in part, because of their names?
Guilty! I bought Zoya Brooke for the name. I don't like the color at ALL... I have shades similar that I DO like, but I basically am hanging on to it for the name lol
ReplyDeleteyes, I wanted to get (still haven't) houston we have a purple from OPI.. just because I live here.. lol
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Most recently I purchased a NYX lip gloss because it is called African Queen, and also the eye shadow Highlight...but that was also because I thought it would make an excellent highlight and it does! I'm very happy with both products regardless of the name, but the name is what made me make those purchases in the 1st place.
ReplyDeleteI bought the China Glaze Kicks collection for the names. I loved the colors too.. the entire collection was just so ME! =D
ReplyDeleteI bought a couple of Tony & Tina glosses, Druidess & another one, because I'm a D&D gamer.
ReplyDeleteI bought Stila's lipstick in Andie, because that's my name. I'd also seen it in a magazine & it looked amazing on the girl wearing it... on me, it looked like poo.
I bought Zoya Christina (my name) and Renee (one of my best friends)... and Deborah Lippmann Dark Side Of The Moon and Orly Shine on Crazy Diamond because I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan.
ReplyDeleteYep. Madd Style Cosmetics, "TRON" and "Tank Girl". Luckily they're very useable colours ;)
ReplyDeletei bought an essie nail polish called california coral...because i am obessed with going there (never been) and love the color coral so it worked out. i am sure that i have done it many many times in my life but that it the most recent that i remember.
ReplyDeleteI bought Essence Irreplaceable because I love Beyonce...good thing I also like the color!
ReplyDeleteI also bought WnW Buffy the Violet Slayer & Sagreena the Teenage Witch because I love those shows!
If Zoya came out with a "Madeline" polish, I would buy it!
YES. I couls not decide what shade to get of the Wet n Wild trios, so I got sweet as candy becasue I was SO HUNGRY!
ReplyDeleteLOL
I bought Illamasqua Load for the name and because of the color that went along with the name. It's so amazingly inappropriate I just couldn't pass it up!!
ReplyDeleteThanks to your post on the Essence Blossoms collection recently, I hurried down to Ulta, and bought Forget-Me-Not,for the color, but the name had also alot to do with it.
ReplyDeleteBPAL Roswell Cemetery, which I purchased for my boyfriend who lives in Roswell, GA. I purchased the scent unsniffed, but luckily we both like it.
ReplyDeleteAfter buying it, I decided that we had to stop and explore the cemetery instead of just driving past it all the time.
I do this with nail polish. Sinful's Eurotrash made me laugh so I bought that. And of course Shine on Crazy Diamond by Orly. Unfortunately the names were better than the actual products.
ReplyDeleteI also bought the Zoya with my name, Jessika. I could not believe they spelled it right! It is a TOTALLY boring pink!
ReplyDeleteI bought Zoya Lindsay...and it just so happens to be my favorite color!
ReplyDelete*sigh*
ReplyDeleteThis is like Romper Room all over again! But if they ever do make a product called "JoElla" I am so buying it!
All the time! It's probably a quarter of the reason I'll buy a color. I like to do my makeup with themes based on names. (I know, I'm crazy. :P)
ReplyDeleteLadies! I usually don't comment on my Wednesday Questions because these posts are about your voices, not mine. But I have to personally thank all of you for your comments--it makes me feel SO much better to know that I'm not alone in doing this, no matter how crazy it sounds to those who are not cosmetics-obsessed. :) I am loving reading all of your responses and your reasoning behind certain purchases. They're cracking me up up over here! LOVE it! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your stories and to "confess" alongside me. xo
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I have, but the real standout in my mind is the one I keep making myself NOT buy--there's a Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab scent called E Pluribus Unum that was released around election time, has some notes in it that are more than just yucky for me, ones that are likely to trigger headaches. I had to keep myself from buying it then, and I have to continuously tell myself not to buy or swap for it now. The reason why I want it so badly? I wrote a store called that.
ReplyDeleteNo lie, i am still hunting down the Stila Lipstick called Samantha because of the name! My name is Samantha and i always buy things with my name. Next up is the Samantha Smokey Eye kit from Buxom :)
ReplyDeleteTotally guilty! I will buy ANYTHING that is named "Sugar Plum" or some variety thereof, because that's the nickname my fiance has for me, lol. Revlon has a Sugar Plum nail polish that I have to get around to buying, and one of Ulta's line of lipglosses is called Sugar Plum as well :-)
ReplyDeleteMostly smellies-- I got Black Cat Crossed My Path and The Chocolate Cat from Conjure Oils last year, because I collect black cat themed stuff. Also, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Smut. Fortunately, that one smells fantastic on me :3
ReplyDeleteI bought Zoya Jo during a promo...don't remember why. *shrugs*
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the whole purpose of names on cosmetics? ;P
ReplyDeleteIt is my guess that about 25% of my makeup stash it purchased on the adorable name first, then the color.
Recent malady, 'Yellow Seahorse' by L'Oreal.
I bought Zoya Jaime for the name to match my name. It's a light cool pink I would not have gone for without the name. I also am thinking about buying a color from the essie summer collection because the name is Super Bossa Nova, even though I don't like the fuchsia with shimmer color, but boy do I LOVE Bossa Nova!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I do this ALL the time. Most recently I bought each of my college roommates a nail polish that reminded me of them just for the names. One, who's Portuguese, got OPI's A Man in Every Port-ugal, another got Zoya Erin, because it's her name, and the other got OPI Big Hair, Big Nails because she has massive curly hair! So fun =]
ReplyDeleteEverything that has rose in it calls my name. I swear some jump off the shelves and into my cart.
ReplyDeleteI've considered buying Zoya Anne - it's totally a color I would wear.
Autumn also has to live with me.
Yes, I've purchased things based solely on names!!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. I bought Sinful's "Tokyo Pearl" because that's where I'm from! I don't even like the color but I still have it.... lol.
ReplyDeletei bought wnw night elf..simply because i played a night elf in world of warcraft for 5 years. i liked the red in there..so i bought a backup..ergh.
ReplyDeletewhat obsession?
Oops..."Ol' Roswell Cemetery". I forgot the "Ol'" part.
ReplyDeleteI also forgot to mention that my guy is from New Orleans, and he is obessed with Zombies. So I began collecting imps that had names related to either of these. New Orleans, Zombi, Voodoo, Bayou, etc. I don't believe I ever located Jazz Funeral, though.
And yes, G, this was a fun question!
I tend to be seduced more by packaging than by name (and I know that's a whole 'nother discussion!) but its funny how whenever I tell a friend about Zoya and show them the catalog (which is always in my briefcase because my name is Kim and I'm a polishaholic) the first thing they do is squint at it until they find their name. Then they make a judgement call about whether its 'them' or not.
ReplyDeleteI bought Zoya Lisa because that's the name of my first niece! It also happens to be a fabulous glowy red that I love.
ReplyDeleteI read in a magazine that this is the case. I, however, wouldn't be swayed simply because of the name of a product. That is just silly to me. It is alllll an advertising ploy.
