A closer look at L'Oreal's new The One Sweep Eyeshadows

UPDATE: FOR MY FULL REVIEW OF THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE CLICK HERE.

After I posted the pics that my lovely readers Jamie and Elissa sent to me of all the new L'Oreal products headed our way (click here if you missed it and would like to see them all), I noticed that the single-most commented-about product in that post was these new The One Sweep eyeshadows that claim to provide a lid, crease and highlight shade all in one sweep.

I'm a sucker for gimmicks. There, I admit it. Even though they tend to get my hopes up, most gimmicks ultimately fail me. BUT, I never seem to give up hope, which means I'm still excited to try this. By the way, there's an interesting conversation going on in the comments on this post about cosmetics companies and gimmicks. It appears that most of us would prefer a simple, straightforward product that works, as opposed to a glitzy, gimmicky products full of bells and whistles. What do you think? Which do you prefer?

This brings me back to The One Sweep. Whether you're intrigued or not, I'm sure you're at least curious to see the shades available, right? I mean, eyeshadow is eyeshadow, and it doesn't matter how you use it--use these any way you wish! So a HUGE thanks to the always-amazing Rachel (Rachel also brought us all those wonderful Hard Candy holiday gift set pics!) for sending some close-ups of the L'Oreal The One Sweep display she spotted recently:

L'Oreal The One Sweep display

There are eight trios total in this display
(there are two rows for each"Natural" trio and one row for each "Playful" trio)

For Blue Eyes:
Natural 409
Playful 209

For Green Eyes:
Natural 509
Playful 309

For Brown Eyes:
Natural 809
Playful 519

For All Eyes:
Natural 819
Playful 829

A few observations:

The applicator definitely looks like a large, angled sponge tip. I'm more curious than ever to try one of these-I have to admit it! As for the shades, they appear to be pretty standard color combos, but Natural 809 looks like it might have a very pretty taupe shade in it. That's definitely the one I'll purchase when I see these in my area.

So, what do you think? Are you intrigued? Skeptical? A little of both? I'd love to hear from you! And another huge thanks to Rachel for the awesome pics!

  2. Reminds me of the roller sponge foundations - freakin' ridiculous. Pretty colours, but I think most will be reaching for their brushes!

  3. hmm, im not so sure about this product!! Please do a review!

  4. lol at the roller ball foundation comment, I actually like that stuff, without using the rollerball of course. ;)

And this... I think for the eyeshadow-applying challenged it may be okay, as for the rest of us, no thanks. I recall another company doing something like this, I don't know if it was the shopping channel or what, but it has been done before.

  5. Skeptical. L'O seems to have put a lot of thought into this, what with the Natural and Playful, but personally I hate (yes, I'm the resident h8er) e/s stamped for specific eye color. I think we should choose on our own accord. I believe in breaking the rules anyway. I LUV purple e/s and it's supposed to be for green eyes. According to one Makeup Maven "Blue Eyeshadow Should Be Illegal." I don't want to be stamped into one category. It's not like matching foundation to your skin. End of rant.

  6. BTW, I would really appreciate it if G could get the one with the taupe shade she likes and roadtest it for us. I'm not ordering you to do so, just a polite request. TIA!!!

  7. My thought is...how are the colors supposed to blend? You don't want 3 stark lines of color on your lids making you look like some sort of weird rainbow. If there are no blending issues, it makes me think that these would be light on pigmentation anyway. :-/

  8. Why do cosmetics companies assume we know beans about applying products? I mean, I realize there ARE people out there who don't know beans about makeup, but...they're probably not going to be buying this anyway. And makeup newbs turn to Youtube and beauty blogs, mostly. *shakes head* I just don't know. :-/

  9. OKAY, SO am I going crazy or..
Isnt the order of eyeshadow supposed to go:
    lid-medium
    crease-dark
    highlight-light.

In these eyeshadows the crease color is lighter than the lid color. Hurmm... someone please help me out here.

  10. I'm skeptical, but neat concept.

  11. I'd have to see a real person use it :D It does remind me of that paint roller foundation thing that failed

  12. God they just keep coming up with worse and worse ideas huh! First roller foundation, now this. This is nearly as bad as the "press on" eyeshadow

  13. Totally skeptical, LOL. People's eyes are completely different shapes. There's no way this can work as a one-size fits all.

  14. Rosanne, I rudely kick dirt on that makeup maven's shoes. My favorite color is blue, so I'm gonna work it even if it doesn't go with my brown eyes!

And I'll politely suggest that G check out 309, it has green... lol

Anna, I noticed that too. Someone really was asleep at the wheel when they put these palettes together.

Also this just can't work considering the basic almond shape of an eyelid. When you sweep on color with a brush you go small inside, wider at the middle, and generally small at the end again, almond shaped! Using the crease color, it's a rare person who uses it on the inside of the eye, you start that about the middle to outer 2/3rds of the crease, small to wider on the outside. You don't put on a slightly curved rectangle of color on your lid or for the crease. Even with the highlight, I generally only use that on the outer 2/3s of my eye and have very little to none on the inside part of my brow bone.

Anyway, G, I really hope you try one of these and show us the results. I have a feeling much hilarity will ensue. lmao! Oh, uh, I mean, I bet it will look fabulous on you!

  15. I'm really interested to see how this works. Probably won't buy it myself, but do want to see what other bloggers think. I'm personally skeptical of it. But if for some crazy reason it gets great reviews, then I may consider trying it.

  16. not too interested, but I know what you mean about falling for gimmicks! I'm a sucker for those sometimes. If I see a celebrity that I like endorse something, I am curious, I go on a mad hunt for a replica or an exact copy... (purses, shoes, clothes, ProActiv he he). ;o)

  17. I'm pretty skeptical since it'll probably be messy if not muddy... But maybe they'll actually work, you never know

  18. Omg... while I admit it looks interesting, 99% of my better judgmental says the product will be a colossal fail. Kind of reminds of the eyeshadow rub-ons that Avon had.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I hate these with a passion. Avon came out with something similar last year and it didn't do well. I've never tried them and I will never spend my money on them...unless I get a sample and I will try it to show how dumb this product is

I'm assuming you can blend these with your fingers or a blender brush but it's just gonna look ridiculous. I bet it won't even fit most eye shape. Ugh this is just plain lazy and dumb! End rant!
