I just love that when I'm tired of a color on my fingers or toes, I don't have to remove it--I can just slap another color on top of it and voila! A entirely new color is born.
When I saw this post by the lovely Stephanie over at Imperfectly Painted, I KNEW that I had to get a bottle of NYC Love Letters. I've seen this color a zillion times in the NYC core collection display, but I never thought anything about it. Not to be mean, but it just looks like your typical sheer pink in the bottle, which is, well, pretty boring.
But after reading Stephanie's post about how some brilliant gal discovered this was an excellent, and very gorgeous, shade for layering, I knew it had to be mine. And for just 99 cents (regular price, not sale price!) well, no arm-twisting was involved. In fact, I had $1 in +UP Rewards from a previous Rite Aid purchase, so I even managed to get it for free (before sales tax).
For this experiment, I used NYC Flat Iron Green (pinky and ring fingers) and Sally Hansen Plum Luck (middle and index fingers) as my base colors.
Indoors and with the flash of my camera, this looks pretty but not OMGICAN'TBELIEVEHOWGORGEOUSTHISIS, right?
But then take it out in the sun and it's a whole other story:
See how the shimmery, duochromey, foily magic appears? I honestly can't decide if I like it better layered over the plum or green. Either way, it's gorgeous and SO worth the 99 cents. HUGE thanks, Stephanie, for this awesome tip!
Next, I decided to try using NYX Girls Buzz Worthy as a layering polish over Sally Hansen Plum Luck, since it looked pretty sheer on its own when I swatched it a little while ago and showed it to you here.
Ooooh la la! Is it just me, or does this kind of remind you of Sally Hansen Purple Gala? It's kind of like a DIY version! Here's a pic of Purple Gala from a previous post, just to refresh your memory:
Kind of close, but of course the gold glitter is chunkier and way more prominent in the Buzz Worthy/Plum Luck combo. But still, it's kind of got the same vibe. Now I can't wait to try Buzz Worthy over other shades and see what happens. Oh, and by the way, Buzz Worthy is not bumpy or gritty even though it's packed with glitter. It's smooth to the touch even before I apply top coat. Yay!
So tell me, what are your favorite layering polishes? I'd LOVE to hear your ideas and combinations!
Oh fun, I just bought Love Letters a couple of days ago. :) I had big plans for layering it over some gray polish but ended up not finding a good gray to buy. It looks great over green polish! I'll have to try that. :)
ReplyDeleteI just got this and slapped on top of a deep red - old school UD Brick House - and it looks amazing! I'm going to try putting it over my toes, which I have a blue on, next. It's such a GREAT layering polish!
ReplyDeleteAnd I've been working on gradients, I think I can use this as a really pretty base for some glitter gradient nails too!
Thank you for the shoutout!!! If only I knew whose original idea that was! It looks gorgeous! It's such a great find too, you never would of thought that bland polish could be so amazing! <3
ReplyDeleteI love it over Plum Luck. Dang, another polish to pick up. :D
ReplyDelete99 cents is a crazy deal! The colors are very pretty and glittery. I'll pick these up for my neices. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat's some GORGEOUS layering!
ReplyDeleteSoooo awesome!!! I love NYX!
ReplyDeleteThe Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure colors: Plum Luck and Commander in Chic are duped by the Sally Hansen Hard As Nails Extreme Wear colors 'Plum Power' and 'Concrete'. The Hard As Nails line retails for $2.99 vs. the $8 for Complete Salon Manicure, and I thought the Hard as Nails colors were MUCH better than the Complete Salon Manicure - especially the 'Concrete' color - it is just beautiful (grey/lavendar/very trendy)!!! Right now Walgreens is having a BOGO 50% off on Sally Hansen.
ReplyDeleteMookie: While I agree that the formula of the Xtreme Wears is awesome (I've reviewed several of these polishes on my blog), I don't see a similarity between Commander in Chic and Concrete. Are you sure about that? I own Commander in Chic and it's pretty dark on the nails (darker than it appears in the bottle), while Concrete is a lighter, softer warm lilac/greige. I don't think Commander in Chic has any lilac in it. Also, just a heads-up that Rite Aid has Sally Hansen and Borghese polishes BOGOFREE this week. :)
