The Wednesday Question

It's that time again! This week's question is one that I really hope you'll answer. I am very much looking forward to reading your responses!

What's your favorite budget-friendly concealer?

I have a few that work for me, but nothing I'm wild about at the moment. Do you own an affordable concealer that works just as well as a high-end product? If so, don't keep it to yourself--tell us! Please!

PS: And even if you aren't happy with your current concealer, I'd love to know that as well. It will help us know which ones to avoid. :)

  1. honestly, the best one i have used, that i constantly repurchase, is L'Oreal's True Match liquid concealer. (i'm also hooked on the TM foundation.) it's superb and you get a goodly amount.
i've tried a few others, from CoverGirl and Maybelline, but this is my fave.

  2. I tried the Maybelline concealer-highlight duo and i really like it. The one I'm currently using is Clinique All About eyes (which is not exactly drugstore, but still at $15 more affordable than a lot of others)

  3. I think I've tried every concealer known to man and nothing hides my raccoon-like dark circles. I'm currently using Boi-ing by Benefit, which I'm sure would work well on someone with normal dark circles.

  4. I am currtenly using the revlon botafirm concealer. Its a cream form and it covers my dark circle perfectly.

  5. All of my concealers are mid-end =/ - MAC Select Moisturecover, TheBalm TimeBalm, and Clinique All About Eyes!

  6. I love the Maybelling Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector (longest name ever!). It's got a concealer on one end and a highlighter on the other, and it's really gentle and hides everything.

  7. i use wet and wild stick concealer and it works well. especialy if you use some powder with it. and it is dirt cheap like 2bucks in canada.

  8. I have redness on my face from old acne and new acne. I've used Urban Decay 24/7 concealer, Revlon colorstay concealer, all ELF concealers..and I hate them all! I'm using Estee Lauder Double Wear concealer and its pretty good..not awesome, but good.

  9. I tried a ton of drugstore concealers but I couldn't find any that I liked. I currently use Urban Decay's 24/7 Concealer in CIA and I love that.

  10. I really like elf's Studio line. I have their Concealer Pencil and Brush for blemishes, which is a really nice creamy consistency but still has Salicylic acid. And then I use elf's Studio Under Eye Concealer & Highlighter. Both products total just $6!

  11. I've never been a concealer user until recently. I tried Maybelline Mineral Power concealer and it worked okay, but settled into the fine lines around my eyes. Then I tried the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind double face perfector thingy, cause I really like the IAR foundation, and it works really well. It doesn't settle into my fine lines and I like the creamy consistency of it. The only thing that irks me about it is that it seems pretty expensive (around $9) and really you get so little concealer. The other end, the highliter, I'll probably never use.

  12. Wow, thank you ladies for all your wonderful feedback! I have taken notes and I now have a lot of new things to try (and some to avoid). BTW, how did I not know that Clinique makes an All About Eyes concealer??

Let me tell you that I've tried every single lipstick-tube type concealer in the drugstore and none of them has ever worked for me. I need something heavy-duty that will not settle into fine lines. The older I get, the more I can see some dark under-eye circles and so I need something that can easily conceal these without looking like I've got a thick layer of cakey product under my eyes (I know you know what I mean).

For those of you with dark circles, I've heard that you need to first determine the shade of your circles. If they're greenish, then you need a yellow concealer. If they're more purplish-blue, you need a more pinkish concealer. Does this sound right to you? Mine are more in the purplish-blue category, which would explain why my yellow concealers do NOTHING to conceal. In fact, they make my circles look gray, which is NOT a good look!

I'm tempted to go back to my ol' standard, MAC Studio Finish concealer (the one that comes in the same packaging as MAC eyeshadows), but I just hate paying $16.50 for a concealer that I like, but don't LOVE. But figuring out the right color to use with MAC is so easy. If I need a pinkish color, I can just get NW20 instead of my usual NC20. So easy.

Also, in case you're curious, I am currently using Revlon ColorStay concealers (both the wand one and the twist-up pen one). They are good, but not great. The twist-up pen one is nice for under the eyes but it can be drying and cakey if you use too much. But it does conceal circles if you apply a few thin layers and set them with a light dusting of powder. If you're looking to try ColorStay, just wait for a BOGO Free sale and pick up both of 'em to see which one works best for you. :)

I will try some of your drugstore suggestions and keep you posted with reviews. If those don't work, I'm afraid I'll have to resort to dept. store/high end concealers. But I have to admit it hurts just thinking about spending $20 or more on something I will use up so quickly! Ouch!

Either way, I'll keep you all posted. xo

  13. I like Almay Line Smoothing Concealer, and they also have another one for acne. I also use MAC Studio Fix concealer, too

  14. Sadly - I haven't found one yet but these suggestions are awesome.

I do have the Maybelline Mineral Power concealer and it does an okay job although I think it's too yellow and light. It is also a bit drying.

  15. mine is a local brand here in the Philippines, which is FS concealer in Sand :) blends really well and matches my skin tone :)

  16. I have had good luck w/Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer. Does well w/"fine lines" around the eyes.

  17. Oooh, thanks for all the new recs, ladies! This is fantastic! :)

  18. I have used the Maybelline Age Rewind for a while and I like it. I also like my new ELF concealer/highlighter duo for 75 cents!!! The best concealer I've ever come across, though, is Kevyn Aucoin's Sensual Skin Enhancer - it comes in a little tiny tub but that tub lasts a lifetime. So $40-ish for concealer for an eternity is not really so bad. I'm also dying to try the new La Mer concealer that everyone's blogging about, but a SIXTY-FIVE DOLLAR CONCEALER is just not in my budget right now :\

  19. Hi selecu! Wow, thanks for the great info. I am definitely going to try that e.l.f. concealer since several people mentioned it on this post. And maybe, after your rec, I should seriously consider the KA product. As long as it lasts for a long time, I think I can justify the cost, if it works! :)

  20. I love love love my Physicians Formula concealer twins. They're double-barreled with beige for easy fixes, and green to neutralize blemishes. Great coverage and easy to blend.

Though I seem to sweat it off during the day, it's reasonable. I mean, you know where we live; heat, humidity, sweat... nothing really stays on in the summer.

But for about $6.99, these babies are a good buy.

  21. i've been using loreal's version of mineral concealer. not much coverage. waiting to use this one up so i can get something else. (thanks to all the above suggestions now I know where to start looking!) i use this concealer now as a brighter. i hide light e/s fall outs, highlighter, that sort of thing. oh, and now and then i use it in DIY e/s primer w/ elizabeth arden's mattifing lotion (BTW, that's cr@p too). like i said the concealer doesn't cover much.

  22. Shela and Anon--thank you both SO much for this info. I now have some new ideas of products to try AND to avoid! You both rock!! xo

  23. No problemo, babe.

The new semester of college just kicked off and I'm already bombarded with quizzes and readings. But I wanted to reiterate that I did subscribe to your blog so I know what you've been up to even though I haven't been blogging.

Sorry to have left you hanging for 2 weeks! I can't promise I'll be commenting on your entries again this week but know that I'm reading all about them in my email!

    :)

  24. I've only ever tried it on the back of my hand in the store, because I'm still working on using up my current Make Up For Ever concealers, but the new Revlon Spa concealer gets amazing reviews online. From what I could tell, it does seem very nice. I always test concealers over a vein on the inside of my wrist before I buy them... I figure, if they can cover the vein, they can cover the dark circles (same difference, right?), and since there are little lines in that area where the wrist bends, I can tell if it's going to cake up and crease. I'm going to try this one as soon as my current concealer stash is used up. As for the more expensive stuff, my two favourites are mac select cover up and Make Up For Ever's full cover (although the latter is silly-expensive and takes some getting used to at first). Ones that aren't worth it: I found Benefit's boi-ing too yellow on my skin (in any shade), and Make Up For Ever's Lift concealer isn't as brightening as they claim. Good luck in your quest for the perfect concealer!

  25. I recently tried Maybelline Superstay, which I'm loooooving. I think it might be too thick for under the eyes, but you can definitely sheer it out. I use to hide the bright red spots on my chin and cheeks that never go away - except with this concealer ::muahaha::!

  26. Hey Beeks! I love your technique for testing concealers. Brilliant! :) Thanks for the info about the MUFE concealers. I have been seriously tempted to try the HiDef one that they've been selling on HSN the past few days...but now I think I might just give the Revlon Spa a try! Thanks so much for the great info. :)

Hey Joanne! You know what? I'm actually testing the SuperStay right now for review, and I totally agree with you. It covered up my blemishes so nicely, but it was a little heavy, drying and cakey on the under-eye area. I think I'm going to try it mixed with a little moisturizer next, and see how that works. Thanks so much! :)

  27. Maybelline Mineral Power, it's one of the best in the drugstore!
