Review: Savvy Nail Lacquer and Eyeshadow from Sally Beauty

A while back there was a BOGO at Sally for Savvy Products. I had never actually tried anything from Savvy up until this point, but I was tempted as soon as I saw this nail color:

I love blue nail colors and this one really caught my eye. "Deja-Blue" is a dark, slightly shimmery, midnight blue. Savvy Nail Lacquers are toluene and DBP-free and retail for $4.29. Here's a pic of "Deja-Blue" without flash:

I picked this up along with an eyeshadow (more on that later) and here's what the color looks like on my nails after two coats:

As you can see, this shade is very dark and almost looks black on my nails. But in the sun, the blue comes out and it's really very pretty. It applies a bit streaky on the first coat but that's quickly remedied on the second coat and the staying power is pretty darn good. No chips for two days and on the third day I just had minor wear on the tips. Not a bad product at all and I would definitely consider buying more shades in the future. Also, the brush is nice and thin so it's easy to paint the sides of your nails.

Now, the product I got for free in the BOGO was a Savvy Satin Eyeshadow in the shade "Moss". Savvy eyeshadows retail for $3.99 and come in a good selection of colors. I picked "Moss" because I'm always drawn to olive shades and this one looked like it had a nice, very subtle gold shimmer. Plus, it was the last single remaining in the display (the last "Moss" single) so I took that as a good sign that it was a quite popular color. Here's some pics:

You should know that I always test my eyeshadows without a base the first time I use them. I never want a base to interfere with how an eyeshadow feels when I apply it, and also with its ability to blend. Now, what I first noticed about this product is that the shadow itself is hard. Very hard. I had a problem with picking up color with my brush and almost had to dig the brush into the shadow to pick up the color. Not a good sign.

When I applied it to my lids, it was quite chalky. The color "skipped" across my lids and looked inconsistent. I really had to work on this shadow for a while before it looked decent enough to leave the house. Here's a swatch on my hand:

As you can see, there is a subtle gold shimmer to this color and I think the shade is so pretty--a great neutral that is definitely safe for work. BUT, here's what my lid looked like after 30 minutes of wearing this color:

Excuse the out of control brows!

Now granted, the flash of my camera threw the colors out of whack (I promise I'm not wearing blue liner with this eyeshadow!) but the important thing to note here is that this shadow creased in under one hour. Also, it just looked really spotty and inconsistent across both lids. Again, the boyfriend, who rarely notices things like this said:

"WHAT is going on with your eyes? Honey, this is not a good look."

The best analogy I can give is that, in one hour, this eyeshadow made me look like I was doing the "walk of shame" after a long night at a bar.

I don't know what would happen if I used an eyeshadow primer before applying this shadow, but I've got to say that I haven't been in a hurry to find out. So please, if any of you own and love Savvy Eyeshadows, I would LOVE to hear from you because I really hope I just picked the wrong shade and that there are some hidden gems awaiting me the next time I'm at Sally. Also, I want to reiterate that I am really enjoying my Savvy Nail Polish and I hope this isn't the only product in the Savvy line that's worth a repurchase. Please let me hear your thoughts!

  1. It looks like "Deja Blue" is a close dupe for "Midnight Madness" from Nicole by OPI! I LURRRRVE that color! Nice find ;)

  4. Hi Michelle! Thanks for all the great info. It is so encouraging to know that there are other Savvy eyeshadows that seem to work better than "Moss". I don't want to give up on this line because the colors are so pretty! Also, thanks for the tip about the other Sally nail polishes. I've heard great things about Fingerpaints and I definitely need to try them. :)

  5. I tried some of their makeup line a while back & honestly I was not impressed. For me it was worse than some of the bad drugstore versions.

  6. Hey Kimberly! I'm sorry that it seems you had a similar experience with Savvy makeup. I'm hoping there are some hidden gems in this line and I just haven't found them yet. Have you tried their nail polish? I really like it so far! :)

  7. I think the nail polish might be the only thing in the line worth messing with. I bought a bottle of it, but haven't tried it yet.
