Swatchfest: NYC Limited Edition Black Magic Collection (pic heavy)

Back in the beginning of August when I got the official details about NYC's Halloween collection, Black Magic, I was so excited to see it in person. Shortly after that post, I spotted the display at my local Rite Aid, so hopefully that means many of you have also spotted this collection in your areas.

Today I'd like to give you a closer look at some of the products in this collection. NYC sent me a variety of products from Black Magic but I did not receive the mascara, black lipstick or polishes, so those are the only products I'm not going to cover in this post.

This is not a formal review of the products in Black Magic. I wanted to get these swatches up as quickly as possible due to the seasonal, limited edition nature of the collection.

The entire collection is as follows:

IndividualEyes - MSRP $4.99
Shade: Dark Shadows

Kiss Gloss - MSRP $2.99
Shades: Blood Red, Blackula, Ghostly White

Ultra Last Lipwear - MSRP $1.99
Shades: Blood Red, Blackula, Ghostly White

in a NY Color Minute - MSRP $1.99
Shades: Blackula, Pumpkin

Self Adhesive Eyelashes - MSRP $1.99
Name: Batty

Liquid Liner - MSRP $2.99
Shade: Black

Show Time Volumizing Mascara - MSRP $3.99
Shade: Extreme Black

NYC limited edition Self Adhesive Eyelashes in Batty
(retail: $1.99)

NYC Limited Edition IndividualEyes in Dark Shadows
(retail: $4.99)

The darkest shade in this palette (above) contains iridescent sparkle.

My camera didn't pick it up, but the illuminator shade is a bright, shimmery white that also contains silver sparkle. For the following photos, I swatched each eyeshadow shade alone and then over the primer that is also in this palette:

NYC Limited Edition Kiss Glosses in Blood Red, Blackula and Ghostly White
(retail: $2.99 each)

Each of these glosses contains iridescent micro-glitter. It's the most pronounced in Blackula:

In Ghostly White, my camera focuses on the shimmer so you can't see the iridescent micro-glitter but trust me, it's there.

I tried so hard to get a good pic of me wearing Ghostly White, but it really looks like a clear gloss with a tiny bit of sparkle in photos, so I didn't want to publish it and give you the wrong impression. In person, it's much more of a sparkly, sheer white and doesn't look clear on the lips. It's got a slight frostiness to it, but it's more sparkly than anything else.

Here are pics of me wearing Blackula and Blood Red:

I was honestly shocked when I saw this pic of Blackula. It looks like it's really settled into the lines on my lips but, in person, you can't really see it--it looks more even and smooth.  But at any rate, I do think this gloss works better as a layering color over lipstick (more on that in a bit).

Blood Red was a total surprise when I put it on my lips. It's a much more wearable and sheer red than I thought it would be. It's a versatile shade and it gives my lips that I-just-ate-a-cherry-popsicle look that I love.

NYC Limited Edition Ultra Last Lipwear in Blood Red and Ghostly White
(retail: $1.99 each)

Ghostly White is a frosty white that's sheer but buildable.

If you're an NYC fan, then you know that NYC knows how to do red lipstick, and Blood Red is certainly no exception. This is a GORGEOUS red, folks. And there's a slight sparkle to it as well (enlarge the above pic and look to the right--it's very subtle but it's there). In person it's got more blue to it (sort of like MAC Diva but with iridescent sparkle).

 Ghostly White (lipstick)

Frosty white lipsticks sure do accentuate my dry lips! Argh. Anyway, I hope this gives you an idea of  Ghostly White looks like on--it would probably be a Halloween-only shade for me (if I were going to be something science-fiction-y for Halloween, especially).

Ghostly White lipgloss over Ghostly White lipstick

Layering Ghostly White lipgloss over Ghostly White lipstick makes the gloss show up a bit better in pictures--I hope you can see the sparkle in this gloss (in the pic above).

Reds are notoriously difficult to photograph and I spent about an hour trying to color-correct this pic of me wearing Blood Red lipstick (above) and I still couldn't get it right. In person it's a bit darker and more blue-red, and you can see the subtle sparkle a bit more in person as well.

And finally, here's a quick shot I did after layering Blackula lipgloss over Blood Red lipstick. You can see how it really makes the red darker and deeper. It's a nice gloss to have on hand if you want to darken up any lip colors you have.

I hope this post helps those of you who are considering picking up some things from the Black Magic collection. Personally, I think the must-haves are both the Blood Red lipstick and gloss. I'll be getting a lot of mileage from both of those lip colors throughout the fall and winter, for sure.

  1. Was really bummed about the polish selection. So ordinary! NYC needs to kick it up a notch! ;) This display has been at my local Rite Aid for about a month and a half now, I believe, and it's still untouched.

  2. I'm probably going to get Blood Red to wear every day lol.

  3. I bought the red lip gloss which is super wearable even though it looks much darker (and I am super pale). I also got the orange nail polish (cuz I can't pass up a shimmery orange that is named Pumpkin no less). Nothing else really caught my eye but now that I've seen the red lipstick swatched I'm gonna have to run out and buy it!

  4. I picked up the black and white lipsticks and glosses. I love unusual colored lip products!

  5. How well do the lipsticks wear? I'm on the quest for the perfect red lipstick, but have had bad luck with other NYC products - mainly the staying power of their nail polish has been less than satisfactory.

  6. oh boy, I hope we get these at Fred Meyer. I found the Wet N Wild red and black lipsticks there and bought them because of your lip swatches. Keep up the good work.

  8. I saw these at Rite Aid and skipped right over them but now going to revisit the display. I am liking the shadow palette and the red lipstick! Thanks G.!

  9. I have the Blood Red lip gloss, and I love it. Very wearable and I even got a compliment on it yesterday. After seeing this, I want to go back and get the lipstick, too!

  10. I used to wear the heck out of white shimmery lipstick similar to the one in the review back in the mid 90s when I was in middle school.

  11. I bought the black lipstick and the red gloss, and I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed at how sheer the gloss is. I love the shade it is in the tube and was hoping for something much more similar without having to layer on a bunch of goopiness.

After reading this, though, I really want the black gloss and maybe even the white lipstick. Thanks for the review!
