How I paint and clean up my nails: a video tutorial

One of the most frequently asked questions I seem to get on this blog lately is, "How do you get that clean line at the bottom of your nails?". I've tried to explain it a few times in the comments, but I thought it would be easier to just record the process and show it to you that way.

Before you watch these videos, I want to state that, for the record, I am not advising you to use pure acetone. I'm merely showing you what I do, and if you choose to try this yourself, do it at your own risk. Even though the main ingredient in lots of nail polish removers out there is acetone, it can be drying for some, so that's why I always wash my hands thoroughly when I'm done working with acetone. If you use pure acetone, it's not the type of thing you want to leave on your skin afterward because it will dry out your skin and cuticles. So IF you try this method, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after you're done.

Alternatively, many people opt to use nail polish remover instead of acetone when cleaning up nail polish mistakes. That works too, but for me, acetone is more powerful and much quicker, so that's why I use it. Plus, for my particular skin, it doesn't seem to dry it out too much if I wash my hands thoroughly when I'm done. But I'd just like to repeat: use pure acetone at your own risk. I'm not responsible if your skin dries up and shrivels off! Got it? Good!

Oh! One more thing: I'm not claiming to have created this method myself. I've taken bits and pieces from other bloggers and YouTubers and developed a system that works for me. So please don't go around thinking that I'm claiming to have invented this technique!

Part one:

(Apologies for the grainy quality of these videos but I recorded them on my Blackberry because I don't own a video camera!)

Part two:

And as promised, here's a close-up of the nail I painted in the above videos (obviously I forgot to clean up the top portion of my thumb, so just focus on the line at the bottom!).

As you can see, the brush dipped in acetone really cuts through the polish like a hot knife to butter. This is the easiest, most effective way I've found to clean up my manicures, but if you have a way you'd like to share with us, I'd love to hear about it! Just leave it in the comments or, if you have a blog or YouTube tutorial you'd like to share, leave a link!

I hope this helps some of you to better understand how I get that clean line at the bottom of my nails. If you have any questions or need something explained further, please leave a comment and let me know!

  1. THANK YOU! This is exactly what I've been wondering about.
Now, if you could explain how to fix up an older polish that's gotten a little...goopy...that'd be perfect!

  2. Sarah: OMG, now that problem is a thousand times easier to solve than cleaning up nail polish mistakes! All you need is a few drops of nail polish thinner! Just add a drop at a time (use the smallest amount possible and add more if needed) and shake shake shake. Your polish will be good as new in no time!

You can get a big ol' bottle of thinner for under $4 at Sally Beauty:

    Hope that helps!

  4. I loved hearing your voice! I was actually "practicing" taking a video today, but my hands are so shaky I don't want to make anyone seasick!

How funny, I was so perpluxed that I could not name your np color. Then you said the name and I actually nodded to myself. I just don't have access to NYX polish - but I want it!

I just replaced my cleanup brush, I paid a whopping 2.59 for it as Michaels in the artist paint supply section, it looks like an extra wide slanted eyeliner brush and i love it. I 100% agree that it cannot be floppy at all!

  7. Thanks so much for posting this, G!! I LOVE your blog :)

I've always admired how clean your mani's are and I'd been trying to figure out how to make such a clean line. I was going to buy those cotton swabs with the point on it, but I can't seem to find them in bulk for too cheap. This is definitely a much more inexpensive alternative!

    Thank you again! :)

  8. Kimberly: You are so welcome! :)

jbrobeck: OMG, my voice makes me cringe! But then again, who loves the sound of their own voice, right? lol. As for NYX, I don't have access to the NYX Girls polishes either, but I got that one at Cherry Culture and I swear it was worth every penny! And what a great idea about Michaels! When this e.l.f. brush gives out, I'm going to head to Michaels and check out their selection. Thanks for the tip! :)

Kate: You are so welcome! Please let me know how it goes when you give it a try? :)

Melissa: You're welcome, honey! Can't wait to see your first set of pics after trying this technique out! :D

Lindsey: So glad you enjoyed it!

  9. cpz: You're so welcome, honey! And I'm glad you didn't buy those pointy cotton swabs because I fear that they'd leave little cotton fibers on your nails, and maybe even ruin your mani! Definitely try a cheap brush and please let me know how it goes, ok? :)

  11. Do you use a cuticle cream? I've always thought nail polish remover would be bad for the cuticles. Someone recently told me that the reason my nails are splitting so much is b/c my cuticles are dry, true?

  13. Great tips! I was using a little brush that came with my Physician's Formula gel liners, and it worked OK for me. I had an ELF concealer brush that I use as a lip brush, so I figured I'd try it out!

I definitely like it better than my little brush, I feel like you get a lot more control!!

  15. Random question: why do you leave that space between your cuticle and polish?

  18. G, thanks for such a helpful video! I bought the elf brush at Target, and I'm ready to try it out! I noticed that you let the polish dry before cleaning up? Does this make a difference in your experience (vs. cleaning up right away after applying the last coat)?

Also, do you clean up before you apply your top coat or after top coat and everything is dry?

I picked up Sinful Colors Lavender today along with some Revlon polishes from the CVS sale. Can't wait to play around with them! Thanks again!

  20. Inspired by your blog, I decided to start painting my naIls ( by myself) and I'm doing an ok job, just that gene noticed I'm getting lots of bumps in the polish- it's a brand new color, I'm using a brand new duri base which I always use at the salon and it's never been problematic, and I washed my hands throughly after doing the cuticles and filing so it's not from dust resudue... What the heck am I doing wrong? Help!!!! ( thanks :-)

  21. I know that this is an old post but I'm just seeing it now and it's so simple yet, genius! I've been wondering how all the beauty blogs I goto have perfect mani photos lol! I have super shaky hands so my nail polish usually is ALL over the place and I just have to suck it up and spend the next couple of days peeling it off my skin. I'll def. be trying this ASAP!
