Review: ChapStick Summer 2016 Limited Edition Slurpee Lip Balm Collection

ChapStick Summer 2016 Limited Edition Slurpee Lip Balm Collection
(retail: $1.99 each exclusively at 7-Eleven stores nationwide)

In honor of 7/11 (the date today and the name of the convenience store), I thought it would be fun to post my review of these new limited edition ChapStick flavors, which are exclusive to 7-Eleven stores nationwide.

If you missed my post last week, this new collection is now in stores (again, it's exclusive to 7-Eleven) and right after my initial post, I went on the hunt until I found them. I went to three different 7-Eleven stores in my area. The first two were sold out (one store employee told me they were getting another shipment soon), and then the last store I went to had two tubes left (one of each flavor), which I promptly purchased. I am going to go back to that first store this week and if I can find more, I'll buy some and do a fun giveaway for those of you who can't find these or don't live near a 7-Eleven.

TIP: in all three stores I went to, I initially couldn't find the display. It's a small display and can be easily missed, so I definitely suggest asking a clerk if they have them--don't rely on just hunting around the store yourself because you might miss them. 7-Eleven is celebrating Slupree's 50th birthday this month, so there's lots of Slurpee swag in stores right now, and these balms might be buried next to all the other stuff.

Ingredients

So now that I've been wearing these for a few days, I'd love to share with you my opinion about each flavor. Let's start with Blue Raspberry Slurpee:

Blue Raspberry Slurpee

Blue Raspberry Slurpee is the same color as the actual Blue Raspberry Slurpee, which is so fun! I have to tell you, ChapStick really nailed this one. Both the fragrance and flavor truly remind me of a Blue Raspberry Slurpee. If you've ever had a Blue Raspberry Slurpee, you know that it's a sweet raspberry flavor that's not too tart (to me it's almost like raspberry mixed with cotton candy) and that's exactly what you get with this lip balm.

The scent is not strong (it actually could be stronger, if you ask me) and the flavor is definitely apparent when you first apply this balm to your lips. However, I find that the flavor and fragrance both fade pretty quickly (like, within a few minutes). I wish they stuck around longer.

Grape Slurpee

I love grape-flavored everything, basically, so this was the "gotta have it" flavor for me. And it did not disappoint. If you love artificial grape scents, you're going to love this one. It both smells and tastes like a Grape Slurpee, and it's just so yummy and fun to wear. This is a tart grape, but not super sour. It sort of reminds me of Grape Kool-Aid (that's the best comparison I can give you in case you've never had a Grape Slurpee).

Both the fragrance and flavor are apparent when you're applying this one, and the flavor sticks around on my lips a little longer than with Blue Raspberry Slurpee. However, I do find that the flavor fades a little more quickly than other ChapSticks in my collection.

In the pic above, I had already used each lip balm a few times (sorry, I couldn't help myself! I had to bust them open before I could get home to photograph them).

I just want to say again that I love that the colors of these lip balms match the actual colors of the Slurpees. So fun! I also want to mention that I'm SO glad that ChapStick didn't add a menthol note to these to try and give them a "frozen" feel. I don't like it when brands try to emulate anything frozen, chilled, or cold by adding a menthol note. To me, menthol does not equal frozen, and I really didn't want a menthol note to mess with the true Slurpee flavors in this collection. So thank you, ChapStick, for giving us authentic flavors and not messing with them by adding menthol!

One more thing: the consistency of these lip balms is a little bit more firm/stiff than other ChapSticks I own. The sticks themselves are firmer than other ChapSticks, and the texture is a tiny bit more light on the lips and not quite as creamy as other ChapStick formulas I own.

FINAL VERDICT: ChapStick totally nailed these flavors and fragrances. They completely match the real thing and if you love these Slurpees, I don't think you'll be disappointed by their ChapStick counterparts. My only complaint is that the flavors and fragrances are fleeting--I really wish they stuck around a little longer--and the texture of these balms is not quite as creamy as other ChapSticks I own. But let's face it: I would buy them regardless of what I just said, because I love Slurpees and these are just too fun to NOT have. I think they're worth the hunt if you're a Slurpee fan. If you're not, and you don't have any emotional ties to Slurpees, then perhaps you can live without them. Me? I needed them, and I'm so glad I found them!

  4. There are no 7 11 near me. So I will be missing out. I'm bummed cuz even though I have never had a Slurpee I can't resist anything gimmicky. I don't like though when I get a Chapstick that isn't soft and creamy.

    1. I am not sure if they're world-wide, Chantel, but I believe that the ChapStick Instagram page mentioned that they're in US stores nationwide. But I would maybe check with your local store and see if they know anything about them!

  6. Bummer, Canada always gets gipped when it comes to stuff like this. We never even got the Maybelline Candy Wow pencils here either, so lame!
