Lunchbox Belts (AKA: Bento Box Belts)
(retail: $1.50 per pack)
Whenever I'm at my local Daiso (click here for a store locator), I'm constantly on the lookout for hacks and ways to take existing products and turn them into beauty-related problem-solvers. Sort of like those silicone pot holders that I use for cleaning my brushes.
A few months ago, I was in the bento box section of Daiso and saw these lunchbox belts (aka: bento box belts designed to keep bento boxes secured). They're basically just large, cute elastic bands, and THAT'S WHEN IT HIT ME. Could I use these to secure my palettes? Why not, right?
I'm sure I'm not the first person on the planet to come up with this idea (although I didn't see any results after Googling "bento box band eyeshadow palette.") Anyway, I purchased a large band and a two-pack of smaller bands ($1.50 per pack at Daiso) and I've been using these babies for several months now, with fantastic results!
PLEASE NOTE: If you do not live near a Daiso, no worries! There are TONS of ridiculously cute options on Amazon (just search "bento box band" or "bento box elastic") as well as on sites like Bento USA. eBay, etc.
Now before you say, "G., I can just use a rubber band or a hair tie or an elastic headband," yes yes yes, you can DEFINITELY use those things! And I'm not here to persuade you to spend money on things you might not need. But let me tell you why I'm loving these bento box bands in particular:
Since bento box bands are designed for securing large (and small) bento boxes, they seem to have a better fit when it comes to eyeshadow palettes (vs. hair ties, regular elastic bands, etc.). Elastic headbands are too big for some of my palettes, and if I wrap those twice, they don't always make it around the palette on the second pass. So what I'm trying to say is, bento box bands are nice and wide, and they fit a variety of makeup palettes.
Case in point, the oddly-shaped Nonie Creme Colour Prevails palette above (click here for my review) has an invisible magnetic closure that is not reliable for travel. Regular rubber bands have snapped on me when I tried to use them with this palette, but this bento box band secures it PERFECTLY, with just one pass.
The smaller bento box band easily wraps twice around both my Maybelline The Nudes palette as well as my Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette...
And both sizes fit perfectly around my LORAC Mega PRO palette.
I also want to mention that these bands have worked beautifully with my DIY eyeshadow palette I reviewed a few months back (the ArtBin sewing kit, which you can see HERE). Oh! And if you don't like cloth bands like the ones above, I have also used silicone bento/kitchen bands from Daiso that look like THIS, and those are great too.
Again, I'm not trying to convince you that NEED these. I'm just offering up a solution if you've found that your rubber bands/hair ties/elastic headbands aren't cutting it for you anymore. I really like how secure these bento box bands feel around my palettes, and the sizes work beautifully with basically every palette I own. AND they're super cute.
How do you secure your not-so-secure makeup palettes? If you have an alternative not mentioned above, I would absolutely love to hear about it!
