What are the most valuable things you've learned from reading beauty blogs?
I can't even begin to list all of the valuable things I've learned from beauty blogs, but I think one of the MOST valuable things I've learned is that you can you clean up a manicure with razor-sharp precision using a small makeup brush dipped in acetone. Before beauty blogs came into my life, it just never occurred to me that you could do this. Back in 2010, it prompted me to post a terribly grainy, low-quality video (recorded on my Blackberry--remember those? I completely forgot I even had one back then but I digress...) to demonstrate my technique, which hasn't really changed much since then. I do leave less of a line at the bottom of my nail now though.
The most important thing I learned is to blend, blend, blend eyeshadow. I can't believe the difference it made. Along with that which brushes work best on certain areas of the eye.
ReplyDeleteThe small brush with acetone, and wrapping the tips/free edge. Both of those things drastically changed my diy manicure style. Foil glitter removal ranks pretty high on my list as well. :)
ReplyDeleteOh jeez, how could I have forgotten learning how to remove glitter easily!
DeleteI have been loving the tip of applying cuticle oil before removing nail polish. Definitely saves my skin from the acetone!
ReplyDeleteI've learned to try new things. For years I stayed away from brands like Wet n Wild, Jordana and NYC until bloggers like you made me want to give them a shot again. (Those bargain brands have improved dramatically since the late 1980s and early 1990s, though to be fair, I think all makeup has.) I probably learned from blogs that you can return stuff to places like CVS, Walgreens, etc., with no issue, which is nice when I buy something I discover I never will want to use. I've also picked up some better nail care tips, how to make manis last a lot longer, though they've also led me to buy a lot more polish!
ReplyDeleteOmg everything! No one in my family or group of friends wear that much makeup so I've relied on online blogs to learn everything!
ReplyDeleteFiling my nails before removing old polish, instead of after. It makes it so much easier to get the shape I want!
ReplyDeleteThe big ones: makeup brushes (what kind and how to use them), primer (both face and eye), brows, lip liner, and how to make manicures last longer.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness ... I have learned so much!! I love makeup! I used to be a cosmetician. But I learned all about blending, and how to cover my undereye circles, and HAC!! Changed my whole life! (LOL, well, that may be an exaggeration, but it certainly made all the difference in my daily routine anyways :P ) Not to mention, no heat waves for my hair! :D
ReplyDeleteI 2nd the drugstore makeup AND nail polish lessons that Heidi mentioned. It also taught me that just because I'm in my early 50's doesn't mean I have to fit into the makeup box of dull matte makeup. A lil shimmer shimmer actually works better better. :D. P.S. I'm typing this with Sally Hansen Ocean Blue (old formula) fingertips. ;D
ReplyDeleteI've learned about makeup brushes and how to use them but what I really learned (and is still learning) what eye looks really look good on what doesn't on aging, hooded eyes. It has really juiced up my makeup routines,
ReplyDeleteEVERYTHING!! From determining what skintone you fall under and how to choose foundation based on undertones...to how to apply liquid liner for the first time. Blogs and Youtube taught me everything.
ReplyDeleteWow.. So much I can't single one thing out. Glitter polish removal stands out. Polish clean up. Oh, primer! I figured it was a gimmick. But most importantly I think that I am not alone in my love of all things beauty and especially drugstore makeup!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've learned to depend on beauty blogs for reviews! Also for swatches of products and foundation matches.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely -- reviews and swatches!
DeleteThat I'm not the only person obsessed with nail polish. Especially Chanel! Especially Limited Edition! (I am such a sucker.)
ReplyDeleteGreat question, I don't think I can pick just one! Not to be repetitive, but I had been out of the loop for awhile on makeup stuff...I didn't really even know about fast dry top coat for nail polish! So I have to agree about the clean up technique and removal technique (I use the blue rubber finger covers from Walmart instead of foil, and cotton rope from Sally's instead of cotton balls). I also didn't know about HAC (highlighting and contouring) and am tentatively practicing on that.
ReplyDeleteI'd just fallen out of interest in being "high(er) maintenance" and had no idea what was going on with cosmetics these days, so it was a real wakeup call to spot Revlon Moon Candy Orbit last spring and happen to look it up and stumble onto blogs (yeah I'm a social network avoider). So honestly I have re/learned A TON in the past year or so!
I learned about Neutrogena's Spf 70 Ultra Liquid Lotion for my oily combo skin, which matches perfectly to the Korean Sunscreens that I had to send awa, and wait a month for!
