Review and swatches: Maybelline Summer 2013 Limited Edition Color Tattoos

Before I begin this review, please take a moment to read the following:

First: I only have six of the eight Summer 2013 Limited Edition Color Tattoos. I haven't spotted/purchased the other two, 10 Precious Pearl and and 15 Blue Paradise, which you can view right here.

Second: I have heard from several of you that the Summer 2013 items (Color Tattoos, bronzers, Color Show polishes, Color Whispers and ColorSensational High Shine lipglosses) are now showing up at the following retailers: Bed, Bath & Beyond, Ulta, Walgreens and Rite Aid. I haven't heard from anyone who has spotted these at CVS or Target yet but if you have, please let us know!

Third: The display for the Maybelline Summer 2013 collection at Walgreens is huge! It's a large, end-cap display that contains all of the products (including ALL EIGHT Color Tattoos) and also some Garnier products. I will post pics of the display either today or tomorrow, if you want to see what it looks like.

Thanks for reading that, and now on to the review!

Maybelline Summer 2013 Limited Edition Color Tattoos

20 Waves of White, 25 Shady Shores, 30 Icy Mint, 35 Cool Crush, 45 Lavish Lavender, 40 Seashore Frosts

And in the same order as the pic above:

Swatches over bare skin (no primer), using just my finger:

And here's a blurry photo to show you which shades have the most sparkle:

No primer was used in any of the following photos, and I applied one thin layer of each shadow using just my finger:

Waves of White: WOW. The teal duochrome effect really comes alive when this shadow is on the eye. It also has a touch of a pink flash to it, at certain angles. This shadow was much more pigmented than I thought it would be.

Shady Shores: This one is very yellow on my skin, but it has a lovely lime green shift to it. In certain lights, it looks almost completely lime green with just a hint of yellow in the background.

Icy Mint: This is a dusty mint green that's quite sheer and not very pigmented. There's no real duochrome effect to this one.

Cool Crush: In the pot, this looks like an icy, silvery blue with lavender undertones. But on the eye, it's a whole different story. It almost looks like an icy, purpley-taupe on my skin, and there is a subtle blue shift to it as well.

Lavish Lavender: On my skin, this is not lavender, but more of a frosty, warm plum. It's not super pigmented and it goes on a bit streaky/spotty. There's no duochrome effect to this one.

Seashore Frosts: Where do I even begin? If you can only afford to purchase one of these LE shadows, make it this one. Seashore Frosts is the most beautiful duochrome shadow I've seen in a long time (especially when it comes to creme shadows!). It's predominantly gold and blue-gray and the color shift is very strong (you do NOT have to strain to see it). The pigmentation is outstanding, it goes on like butter and there's no need to build for opacity. It's pure perfection.

In fact, I love Seashore Frosts so much, I have to give you another shot of it:

I'm not done yet! My longtime blogging buddy Halifax of Sparkled Beauty asked me if I could swatch these shadows over black, so here you go, Halifax:

For these swatches, I first applied a thin layer of Wet n Wild Fergie Take On The Day shadow primer, then I did six swatches of matte black powder eyeshadow (I used a matte black from an old Wet n Wild palette). Then, using a shadow brush, I lightly applied a thin layer of each Color Tattoo on top of the matte black powder shadow. STUNNING, right?

On their own (left) and over a matte black powder eyeshadow (right:):

My favorite over black is definitely Waves of White. Here is that combo on my eye:

Eyeshadow primer + matte black powder eyeshadow + Waves of White

This combo also wears like iron. The only problem I had was a tiny bit of creasing after a few hours, but I just lightly blended my crease out with my finger and it was back to fabulousness all day and into the night.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Worn on their own, all six of these shadows (again, I don't own the other two LE shadows in this collection--yet) give off a beautiful, ethereal type of vibe. With the exception of Seashore Frosts, these are sheer shadows and that's not a bad thing here. They give the eyes a beautiful, and interesting, wash of color and I think they're perfect for hot summer days (or nights) when you don't want to wear anything too heavy. Like most of the Color Tattoos I own, the wear-time on these even without primer is outstanding. They really do wear like iron for me after they set, but the two shades that I don't really recommend are Icy Mint and Lavish Lavender. For me, those shades lack the pigmentation, depth and smooth texture of the other four I'm reviewing here today. And like I said before, if you can only buy one of these shadows, make it Seashore Frosts. This is the most beautiful shadow I think I've come in contact with at the drugstore in probably the past two years, and it has fantastic pigmentation as well as a smooth, easy-to-work-with texture whether you're using your fingers or a brush. My other must-have, if you can buy two, would be Waves of White. You really have to see this one in person to really appreciate it, and hello! Scroll up and look it at over the black matte eyeshadow again. Need I say more?

Do you own any of the Maybelline Summer 2013 Color Tattoos? If so, which shades are your favorites? I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I literally gasped when I saw the black/Waves of White combo on your lids! WHOA! Amazing! I would've never thought to put a creamy base OVER a powder product, but now I want to go play with my makeup. LOL I purchased all of them, except the gold just because I have enough golds in my collection, but I couldn't pass the others up! They're all so unique! I can't wait to try them! :)

  2. they look amazing with the black base, but not so much alone. Wish they would come out with more matte finishes

  4. Thanks so much G, they are stunning over black. I am anxiously waiting for mine coming from the US, even the ones you don't recommend, just so I can say I collect them all lol. Surprisingly enough, I did think of the word "ethereal" when I saw swatches of them :)

  5. Those look amazing over black! do these eyeshadows crease up!? The colors they have are great but 6-7$ for one makes me think before buying. Anything creamy doesn't get along with me.

    1. The creasing is very, very minimal on me. But like I mentioned in my post, when worn over powder shadow, they do crease a little more. Hope that helps!

    2. if you can, try to find them at Bed Bath and Beyond. They're only $5 not 6-7 and they always have coupons for 20% off and sometimes $5 off $15... I used that coupon to buy 3 and they ended up being 3 for $10

  6. I just got all 8 of the color tattoos today at my CVS. They had all the limited edition displays except for the high shine lipglosses and the bronzers.

  8. Waves of white is also amazing under sheer or less pigmented eyeshadows. It gives them a light duochrome look and more depth. I agree that seashore frosts is absolutely gorgeous. I bought lavish lavender also, but I actually found it to be pretty pigmented on me.

  14. Thanks for the swatches, esp the ones over the black shadow! What an amazing change.

I love Seashore Frosts the most though. Definitely need to get that! :)

  15. If I can find them the lavender has a spot reserved in my cart. I just think it's beautiful, and it's so hard to find a lavender base. Lots of neon, grape, violet, etc.. but nothing so delicate. Amazing transformation over black.. how fantastic will these be on darker skin tones! Thank you so much for swatching them on the eye, first review I have seen that has done so and it's very helpful. I found a YT review where they were swatched and then taken out in direct sunlight.. really gives a good view of the color shifts which are so hard to show in static photos or indoor lighting. Didn't want to link it directly because I was not sure if it was allowed but it's easy to find with a search.

  20. They look great on you, G! I have the first six, but am still looking for the other two. I'll hit Walgreens maybe tonight or tomorrow and hope :) (I collect them; it's a 'gotta have 'em all' mentality, lol)

    1. ETA: I stopped in my Walgreens today and they had a big display with all eight, so I immediately grabbed the two I didn't have plus another set for a friend (I got her all of them as her birthday present). *Plus* they had the new Milani shadow eyez pencils so I, um, bought all six.

  21. *Dies* OMG those colors look AMAZING over black! I NEED to get Seashore Frost, Waves of White, and Lavish Lavender even if I have to scrape for pennies in my sofa!

  25. Those look amazing over black shadows! I would have never thought to try that! I found these at Fred Meyer. I only bought 4 of them and I did get Precious Pearl and Blue Paradise. I also got Lavish Lavender and Seashore Frosts. Precious Pearl and Seashore Frosts are the standouts for me so far. Think I may go back and get backups of there are any left and pick up Waves of White as well. Just found your blog about a month ago and absolutely love it. Thanks for writing a blog all about affordable products!

  32. Hit up 2 Walgreens and 2 CVSs this morning, nada :( Can we get an interactive map for this? lol hopefully they'll start hitting everywhere soon and we won't need one, but I'm dying here!

  33. Wave of White was my first Color Tatoo purchase (last week) I was suprised at how strong the dou-chrome was as it looks completely blue on me which is not a bad thing, but I was really wanted it to read more white. I am going to keep looking for Precious Pearl in hopes that is going to give me the look I have in mind. On a side note, I really love how these look over black and think it maybe my go to look in a couple of weeks when I head out to Las Vegas! Thanks for this G.!

    ReplyDelete
  34. These look great over the black base!

Also, if anyone is in Houston, they now have them at HEB and the two extra limited edition tattoos too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I found the display at KMart! So you if you have one of those in your area, check there!

  36. I picked up four of them, Blue Paradise, Seashore Frosts, Cool Crush, and Waves of White. I haven't worn any other shadows since, they're my new favorites!

  37. Just snagged Waves of White, Seashore Frosts, Blue Paradise & Lavish Lavender this morning at Walgreen's. Gorgeous! They had all eight, and I was REALLY tempted, but decided to be good. My wallet is much happier with me now!

  38. Color Whispers are being sold at target in my area (cleveland, ohio). Got one for five dollars and some change with a $1 off coupon I got in a mailer.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am having a really hard time finding these at my wags and rite aid. Could you pretty please start an interactive map for these? :o)

    ReplyDelete
  40. WOW seeing these over black changed my perspective so much! Thanks for offering that! It definitely changed my opinion on these shadows. I wasn't overly impressed at first but after seeing them over black I realized that they have a lot of potential!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I loooove that you included them over the black. That's what sold me!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks so much for the review and swatches! A few weeks ago, I picked up the lavender and seashore frosts from BB&B (plus coupon!), and I've only used them a couple times but they are really nice. I wish now that I had picked up the Waves of White too...it just looked so plain in the pot, so these swatches are very helpful!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have loved seashore frost since I laid eyes on the swatch a few weeks ago. I have been dreaming of getting my hands on one!! Literally dreamt that I had it, lol. But today my dream came true at Rite aid! I'm so excited!!! The only other limited edition item I am dying to get is the Wet and Wild Nude Awakening Palatte, but it seems like it might be to late to find in stores since all the summer stuff is now out. Oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  44. wish we could get an interactive map on these!!! i missed out on the jeweltone ones but im not missing out on these. i have looked at my target, walgreens and cvs with no luck. i live in la if anyone has found any.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I picked up Cool Crush, Seashore Frosts, Lavish Lavender and Waves of White. I love the three that I've tried so far. I wonder if there is some issue with batches, because the Lavish Lavender that I purchased has great texture, good pigmentation and is very easy to apply. It's one of my favorites out of the group so far. Wore Cool Crush today and actually received complements on my makeup, so I'm glad I saw your blog and went on a quest to find these. Probably some of my favorite Color Tattoos to date.

  46. Of all the Maybelline Summer 2013 displays, I've /only/ seen the one with Precious Pearl and Blue Paradise, and it was at CVS. But the area I live in is a bit of a bummer sometimes (I'm only just now seeing the Revlon magnetic polish displays in a few places) so maybe it's just my weird town.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I have been so excited to buy Seashore frosts ever since I first laid eyes on a swatch a few weeks ago. I have been looking all over for these and they finally had them at my local Rite Aid in Michigan!! So excited I finally have it!!! If I could just find the Wet and Wild Nude Awakenings palette I would be even happier!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Waves of White surprised me too! i thought i'd just get a white, but i'd describe it like a unicorn! MAGICAL!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Awesome post. I want them all but have budgeted for the top two you recommend.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow those look fabulous swatched over black eyeshadow - would never have thought of that! I'm hoping they make their way to my neighborhood Walgreens!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Gorgeous G! Thank you for sharing this info with us. Do you know if they are available in Ulta already?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've wanted seashore frost since it was in the "spotted!" Post! You just need ONE thing for an eye look that looks like you spent 10 minutes on it!! I want it so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I want these so bad. Even more now after seeing your post. I can't find them anywhere :(

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thank you! I think a lot of these shadows more resemble polishes- which, if they were I would have swatched them over black and was wondering how to go about it. With the same polish analogy, I also worried a black base would be too dramatic for everyday. I'm wondering if anyone has layered these color tattoo shadows? I'm going to try some of these over the 'tough as taupe' shade..I'm hoping that brings them out in a way that I can wear them for everyday. Thank you for this post and the pictures!

    1. I'm wondering the same thing re layering them, and even funnier, I immediately pulled out TAT to see if any of the ones I got (Seashore, Shady Shores, Icy Mint, Lavender) would be fun to layer and see if I can't brighten up that one at all.

      Delete
  55. Arm swatches don't really bring out the complexity of these, so I really appreciate that you swatched them on your eyelid and over black as well! I've read a few reviews and was only excited about Seashore Frost, but after reading your review and seeing all of the great photos, I kind of want to buy them all :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Picked up all eight - I had found the display with just Precious Pearl and Blue Paradise at a local CVS, then went to visit my parents and their local Walgreens had the huge display with all of them! Seashore Frosts got me a ton of compliments at work yesterday! Loving the swatches over black, though - planning to pick up the black Nyx jumbo eye pencil next time I'm near Ulta and wear them like that for a night out :)

  57. Seashore Frosts. SEASHORE FROSTS. You will be miiiiiiiine!

  58. One of my Walgreen in St. Louis had the dual display with Garnier going up last night. It had all the shades of Color Tattoos, plus LE glosses and Color Whispers. I only picked up the Seashore Frosts, can't wait to try it.

    2. @peapod,I have seen these at the Walgreens in South County at the corner of Jeffersonian, and Telegraph.I have also seen these out in West County at the Walgeens in twin oaks off of Big Bend near 141.Hope that helps!

  59. I am dying, dying--can't find these ANYWHERE! I have gone to multiple Walgreens and CVS stores and today an Ulta--all with no success. Melissa, can you tell me which Walgreens in St. Louis? I am the St. Louis metro area. I am getting tired of chasing these down. . .

    ReplyDelete
  60. Anyone in or around St. Augustine, FL seen these anywhere? I've been looking EVERYWHERE.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I swear, every company has a white with a teal duochrome! Seeing as I already have Jesse's Girl (what i think is) Secret Weapon loose shadow (white with a teal duochrome), I don't need these. The mint is.. Okay. It disappears over the black sadly. (I really hate how JG places their shade names on the barcode label that you peel off!)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I tried Seashore Frosts and Blue Paradise and I returned them both. Blue Paradise became patchy and gross when I applied it. I tried using a brush and my fingers and neither worked. Seashore Frosts just didn't look good on my skintone (made my eyes look bruised). I also couldn't get it to look good over black like you did :(

Precious Pearl is sheer but has no formula issues for me, so I kept it. Still, I think I'm pretty much done trying to get Color Tattoos to work for me. Several of the ones I've tried have the same problems with patchiness and lack of pigmentation. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Just FYI, when I went to CVS, the machine had a $1 off Maybelline coupon! After a lot of internal debating, I decided to restrain myself and just get Seashore Frosts. (I had this post on my mind and even opened it up as a reference.) I was still unsure whether I would be comfortable wearing the color (I'm very much a "neutrals" girl.). But then I went home and put it on...OH MY GOODNESS. Exactly like you described, buttery and AMAZING! The blue-tinge that I was scared of came off more grey/taupe with the awesome gold shimmer. It's kind of how I wish Mac's Patina would look on my eyes. I LOVE it so much! You've never steered me wrong with your recommendations. Thanks so much!

  64. Found these at Walmart yesterday!

  65. Best. Post. Ever! I wear color tattoos every day. I use the darker shades as liner. Today at CVS I went with Waves of White, Lavish Lavender and Blue Paradise. Kinda regretting that I passed over Seashore Frosts and Precious Pearl. Lemming now.
