The Wednesday Question (possible NSFW edition)

This week's question is for the ladies out there, but it's a delicate topic so I'm asking it after the jump...keep reading to see this week's question...

I've wanted to ask this question for a while, but I could never really think of a delicate way to ask it. So I'm just going to go ahead and say it:

Do you use a separate cleanser for your lady parts? If so, what do you use?

I'll go ahead and be the first, and possibly only, person to answer this one. I do use a separate cleanser for my lady parts. After a few bad experiences with products that contained a lot of fragrance, I have been faithful to Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar for many, many years. It's been recommended by gynecologists, it is gentle (for me at least) and I have never had any issues with it. There. I said it! If you feel comfortable answering this question, I would really appreciate it because I have a feeling it's a topic that some would like to discuss and get feedback about.

  1. I don't, I just use whatever bodywash I have on the go and make sure to rinse thoroughly. But then, I haven't had any reactions to a particular product. Interesting question!

    1. Thank you, beautifulmonday, for having the courage to answer this one! :) I know it's a delicate topic but I think it could be helpful so...I went there! Haha.

  2. Good question, by why be delicate or embarrassed about it? Own your vulva, ladies! It's nothing to be ashamed of!!!

I used to use LUSH Tramp exclusively until it became impossible (and way too pricey) to get so now I use tea tree tingle body wash from Trader Joe's. It is very gentle and the tingle is very nice!

    1. I don't think it's about embarrassment as much the answers being public for the whole world to see. If I could make this a private question for JUST Nouveau Cheap readers to see and respond to, I wouldn't have worded it so delicately. ;)

Tee Tree can sometimes sting my face, so I can't image what it might do "down there," but I'm so glad to hear it works for you! I *love* Trader Joe's skincare products and their haircare too!

  3. I'll answer :) Normally no, I don't; I use my regular bath pouf and bath gel and just rinse really, really well. Sometimes I use a different washcloth, but still the same shower gel (right now I'm using Korres', which I *love*.)

However, I get Brazillians, and due to my skin type and hair type I'm more prone to ingrown hairs. So after waxings I use a very gentle exfoliating facial cleanser my esthetician recommended to make sure I don't get ingrown hairs. I usually use it for a week or two, then I'm back to normal because it's easier and I either forget or get lazy. So far it's working; no ingrowns!

    4. The one I use isn't drugstore, so if you don't want to spend the $$ on it I totally get it - I use Vivite's Exfoliating Facial Cleanser (http://www.viviteskincare.com/Products/Default.aspx?categoryid=1&productid=1 ) which I get from my salon/spa. I will say that a little goes a long way and this stuff has lasted me months, and I use it on my face, too (no cross-contamination because I squeeze it onto my hands or my washcloth). If you don't want to spend the money on it I would recommend something that works on both a chemical exfoliant level and a physical one, so something with microbeads *and* something like glycolic or salicylic acid. I don't really know a drugstore dupe but hopefully that helps as a place to start?

  4. I do. I usually use the Summer's Eve wash. It's relatively cheap. If i get a coupon for the Poise brand, I use that too. I have a condition called hyperhidrosis, where I sweat a LOT on my feet, underarms, and my lady area (sorry if tmi...). I find that a separate product dedicated to THAT specific area does help me feel fresh. I always follow up with some baby powder and the summer's eve spray.

  5. Actually that's the only area I don't use any soaps or cleansers on. I mostly just wash really well with warm to hot water. I'm afraid of anything else possibly throwing of my ph balance and causing infections.

    2. Yep, I'm the same way. My skin EVERYWHERE is super duper sensitive and I'm not chancing anything in that area.

    3. I second all of this. I feel like our lady parts have their own method of keeping themselves clean, so why mess it up by adding chemicals. I find this works the best for me too. :)

  6. I use the Dove sensitive skin bar too! Although it's also the only thing that keeps my arms from getting dry and bumpy. I'm careful with shaving products though, because although I'd love to switch up products and scents my skin is not a fan. Trader Joe's shaving cream actually works quite well.

  7. I use the LUSH soaps and body washes that I've already got in the shower. If I switch to something with more chemicals like BBW or Softsoap, I get the yeastie beasties. Maybe I'll try that Dove Sensitive Skin bar!

  8. I don't use a separate cleanser, but I absolutely can NOT use any antibacterial soaps on my lady bits. I have learned the hard way that there is a micro-war taking place down there daily: good bacteria vs evil yeast. Yep. Antibacterial soaps deal a fatal blow to the forces of good and I end up with a lovely yeast infection as a result. It never fails. Sorry if this is TMI, but hey, you asked :-)

    1. Nothing is TMI for this question! Thank you so much for the response! :)

  9. I just use whatever body wash I purchased on my lady parts. And I just use my hand...no bath pouf or wash cloth.

I've never had any issues due to body wash.

  10. I always use an all natural goat soap on the rest of my body, so it ends up cleaning "down there" as well. I have SUPER sensitive skin and goat soap is so good for it (all of it). I don't have a preference on brand as long as it contains all natural ingredients and isn't loaded with synthetic fragrances and preservatives (and I like to support small family farms). Two thumbs up for goat products (although I may be partial because I have two live ones in the backyard).

  13. I don't normally use a separate cleanser for my lady bits, just whatever soap/shower gel that happens to be in bath. At the moment it's Trader Joe's citrus body wash. When I am picky about washing down there I use dove soap or dr. bronner's peppermint castile soap.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I just use whatever body wash I'm already using. I tend to use Dr. Bronner's soaps more than anything.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't use a separate cleanser, except when I'm using a body wash with a minty scent to it because they're kinda tingle (hey, you asked, lol). However, most days I use an unscented body wash.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I use Summer's Eve for my lady parts. After trying to use other products when I was younger (bad memories...) I'm never gonna use anything else! Plus its recommended by gynecologists, dermatologists, and doesn't throw off ph balance! :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I use Suave kids free for my body and my area. It's the only thing I've tried that isn't irritating to my skin and to my area. Plus it's really affordable, usually under $3 and often around $1!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Not really, but once I made the mistake of using my Dr. Bronner's peppermint liquid soap all over. UNPLEASANT!!

      Yeah I've made that mistake.

It's like "mmm, this is nice, Oh a bit tingly, Oh god! It's not stopping! It burns! Aaah!"

      Never making that mistake again...

  19. I don't usually but I had to when I was pregnant. My bits were alot more sensitive while pregnant, I had to use unscented Dove then. Normally though I just use whatever soap I've got in the shower.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I use the same thing I use on the rest of my body, either Dove or Ivory soap. About 6 months ago I had a coupon for Summer's Eve feminine wash and decided to try it...bad idea. I got itchy, and didn't even think to attribute it to that at first, I just thought maybe I was getting my first ever YI (yeah, can you believe I've *never* had one of those?! Guess Mother Nature decided PCOS/infertility was enough to inflict on my lady parts, lol) but itchiness was my only symptom, and when I thought to quit using that, it stopped. So just good old gentle soap 'n water for me.

(how was THAT for a tmi post?! do I get a ribbon or something? ;-))

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't use anything except water- I read years ago that using soaps can throw off pH/cause yeast infections. As I am prone to yeast issues, water it is, and I'm no worse for the wear. If I WERE to use a cleanser down there, it would probably be my Almond Dr. Bronner's, or I might purchase the Baby Mild. I can't imagine using the Peppermint!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh gosh, now I feel really bad for just washing myself with whatever bar soap I have on hand. Lately it's been Irish Spring :\

In the past I have used Summer's Eve but felt it was unnecessary because it didn't do or not do anything that set it apart from other soaps.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Don't feel bad. I too use good 'ole soap! Whatever is in my shower. Sometimes it's nice stuff, or body wash, sometimes it's cheap antibacterial. I've never had an issue with yeast infections or irritation.

  23. I don't normally use a different cleanser on my lady parts, BUT I use vagisil "down there" when its that time of the month :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I've had a lot of problems in the past with various body washes so i just stay away from my lady parts with them. I have tried summers eve in the past but these days I just give myself a good scrub with the warm water.

    ReplyDelete
  25. hey, i use Dove sensitive skin unscented down there, too!!! for my armpits, i use Bison wakilala clear wash.. and for the rest, i use whatever body wash i have.

  26. I use the Summer's Eve Cleansing Wash for sensitive skin for my lady parts. I learned the hard way awhile ago when using my regular body wash. TMI..I had horrible burning and irritation after using regular soap products. Ugh, not again!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good question! Unscented is the way to go. But I also like the trader joe's soaps -- they have an oatmeal one and a tea tree bar (usually sold in twos in a plastic wrapper) that are very mild, and a good price. No issues with those! That recent episode of Girls where Hannah has a UTI about sums up the misery -- owwwwwwww! Never again, if I have any say in the matter!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I use the same shampoo I use on my head and avoid anything super strongly-scented.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I use whatever body wash I have in rotation (currently it's Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash, Philosophy Amazing Grace, and Target's version of Dove's Body Wash in Nectarine & White Ginger.) And lots of warm water to rinse! Oh, and I learned the hard way NOT to swipe my husband's shaving cream when taking care of my (ahem) "bikini area."

    ReplyDelete
  30. I had a doctor tell me many years ago that the lady parts are like a self-cleaning oven and to never use any products there. Especially anything with glycerin, which invites the yeastie-beasties to come visit! Since I am ridiculously sensitive to soaps and whatnot, I just give the area a good wash with my hand held shower head. If I feel a need, in between showers I will give the area a going over with a baby wipe to feel fresh.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for that comment about the glycerin. I didn't even think about that but yes, it's a humectant so it makes sense that it would increase the risk for yeast infections.

I use whatever generic version of the Aveeno fragrance Free Colloidal Oatmeal Body Wash I have. I might go for the bar instead after that comment on the glycerin.

      Delete
    2. Omg thank u for the comment I've been using glycerin soap down there n I've been battling infections on and off. it doesn't help that I'm preggo either! I'm throwing that soap away. I only got it because they were out of Ivory soap. you're a life saver!

      Delete
    3. Thank you for mentioning the glycerin thing, I only found this out very recently and it's so important! It's also fairly common to have an allergic reaction to glycerin in the vaginal area, so if anybody reading this is having itchiness in that area, check the ingredients in your soap and lube.

      Delete
  31. I also use the Dove Unscented beauty bar. I don't like to use anything with fragrance down there!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't use a separate cleanser for my lady parts, as I've never had any problems just using whatever soap or body wash I use for the rest of my body. I have used those freshening wipes from Summer's Eve, or other hygiene companies, during my period. But even that was more to make me feel more refreshed than anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have to use a different wash because when I use anything thing else it becomes the song GIRL On FIRE lol but yes I use summers eve wash or a plain organic soap nothing to crazy for my lil lady lol

    ReplyDelete
  34. I use the Dove bar too! I've read online that using anything scented can irritate the area and actually make it smell worse.

    ReplyDelete
  35. After a horrible encounter with hotel soap that left me irritated and itchy for several days, it's Summer's Eve only for my lady bits!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I started using the Summer's Eve for Sensitive Skin last year when my then preggy sister started using it. I love it...but...the texture when it first comes out of the bottle takes some getting used to! Think thick clear lube. Bit once you touch it to skin it lathers nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes. I use Human Nature Feminine Wash, an all-natural product available here in the Philippines. However, any commercial wash especially made for the purpose will do. I don't use soaps/shower gels because the vaginal flora is acidic, so the alkalinity of soaps/shower gels disrupts the pH balance.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I generally use the same thing on my bits as I do on the rest of my body. Somtimes in the summer I reach for a something minty..(Lush's Demon in the Dark is nice)..as the tingle is quite refeshing. I used to work at a bath and body type store and you'd be suprised how much time we all spent talking about this very thing! (employees and customers!)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I've had to switch from Ivory bar (all over) to Ivory and a face wash (my skin started getting over-dry and then of course over-oily to compensate) to Ivory, face wash, and Cetaphil (off-brand because it's cheaper) cleanser in my lady bits. When I was little we had scented soaps like Dove, Caress, Irish Spring (and I took bubble baths, too) and I kept getting UTIs so I stopped using all of those and it cleared up. Recently, I've been having itchiness to the extreme and stronger smell down there and I remembered how the soaps caused problems before. Made the switch, and everything is much, much better.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I usually use whatever body wash I'm currently using on a separate wash cloth, then rinse VERY well. The only wash I can't use down there is dial because it burns like the dickens! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm not very sensitive to soaps, so I use whatever bar soap or body wash I'm using that day. I change bar soaps and body washes frequently. And have a few different of each in my shower. I've had a few YI's but they were all during pregnancy. So I always attribute them to that.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't actually use any soap down there. Just rinsing with water has been good enough for me, and I read that it's healthier too. What I CAN'T use though, is antibacterial soap. I've gotten yeast infections that way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't use a separate cleanser. But I also don't cleanse that part with a cleanser. I'll clean really close to that area (hair, inner thighs, the back crease ;) with whatever body wash but I'll get into the nitty gritty with a wet cloth. That's what I find will keep with itch-free.

    ReplyDelete
  44. No.. but I do not use traditional body wash. I use Suave almond and shea butter shampoo. I find it much more gentle on my skin, and less drying. I also do not apply soap directly to the area, just use lather from where I have applied it elsewhere, and make sure to rinse thoroughly. While we are on the topic, I don't use a razor in that area anymore either.. I use a personal trimmer. I have had major issues with razor burn/ingrown hairs forever, and the personal trimmer is the only solution I have found to alleviate it. Another tip is to only wear cotton or lace underwear, it does make a difference if you are prone to irritation, itching, or yeast.

On another topic, I use the conditioner from the same line for shaving cream and it works better than any shaving product I have tried. Cheap too and comes in a convenient pump bottle.

  47. I use Dove bar soap (no particular scent -- I use all of Dove's scents) and follow up with Summer's Eve Cleansing Wash for sensitive skin.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I also use the Dove Sensitive Skin unscented beauty bar on the advice of my gynocologist. Plus, due to a some bad breakouts of psoriasis and eczema about five years ago, my dermatologist advised me to stop using scented/colored skin lotions. Keeping it simple has helped my skin - all over!

  49. I love how you set the question up. And my answer is yes, I use Summer's Eve Cleansing Wash. I very prone to yeasts infections(TMI sorry) and the doctor recommened a saparate wash with no fragance it was the first one i saw and I've love it ever since.

  51. I don't use a separate soap, but I normally use Dove or Yardley bar soaps all over. I lather around the parts that grow hair, but no soap on the inner parts or I'll itch for sure!

Seems like I get more and more sensitive with age. I didn't have to take as much care when I was younger.

  52. WOW! Ladies, you have no idea how happy I am to see that, not only were you NOT shy about answering, but that this has turned into one of the most commented-on Wednesday Questions EVER! I was seriously scared that no one would feel comfortable answering this, but I think the topic is one that lots of us may be interested to talk about...it's jut a hard subject to approach!

So you have no idea how much it means to me that you'd all take the time to answer this one...it's difficult to get honest feedback and advice about things like this sometimes, and I really appreciate your willingness to share with one another here.

And PS: There's no such thing as TMI amongst friends, and we're ALL friends here, so share away! :)

  54. this is a good question..I just use whatever I'm bathing with..but I was doing some research about coconut oil, and many women were saying that it is wonderful for that "area"..lol..one even said it cured her "discomfort" she was having, and she now regularly uses it to prevent such said problems..which I thought was very interesting. Apparently it has some anti-fungal properties and such..I can't remember exactly what else, but its supposedly great for use as a deodorant and a lubricant..sorry if that sounds too graphic..
Anyway, I've ordered some strictly for beauty purposes, but it was really interesting to read all these uses for it.

When in doubt...use Dove~! lol

  56. I use the sensitive skin unscented dove bar too!

  57. Interesting question. I always assumed everyone used a separate cleanser for that area.

Personally, there is no way on earth I could use just anything to cleanse. Anything with fragrance is an absolute no-no. I use Nirena feminine wash, because it's one of the few things that doesn't bother me. It's not the cheapest product, but one bottle lasts an entire year so it's really not expensive in the long run. I have had my share of issues in the past, so I'm not willing to risk going through those issues again.

I also can't use regular bar soap because the sulfates in them make my skin itch terribly. I've been using my own handmade soap for over 10 years.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I know I'm late to the party but I'll chime in anyway. I do use a separate bar of soap. It's an all-natural, goats milk based soap I buy from a seller on Etsy. Her name is Patricia de Vreese. I've been using it for years and it works perfectly. It's very mild and I feel like it does the job well.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I use Vagisil ph balance. I too have had reactions to anything with a lot of fragrance. I will try the Dove Sensitive as an option. Dove and Olay are the only bar soaps I will use. I was devastated when Olay stopped making the pink bars!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I tend to use Dove or Ivory, whatever's on sale, for my body, so no different soap is necessary. Usually I'll lather up the hair but don't scrub "down there" while the suds are on. As I'm rinsing off the soap I'll use my hand and just water to make sure everything is all clean. Like other people said, it should be self regulating and not need particular cleansing, but if you're super active and sweaty or your hormones play merry hell with various secretions, then it makes sense that you'd want to give a bit more attention.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I don't use different soap, but sometimes when my sister is trying to unload product she'll give me a bottle of Summer's Eve. I've noticed its gentle and I liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I absolutely use a separate cleanser for my lady bits! Can you tell that I'm very passionate about this topic ;)
My overall skin type leans on the sensitive side and my lady part is certainly not immune to the sensitivity. I used to use Summer's Eve (SE) but after trying out Vagisil, I think that I prefer it over SE. I noticed that it does a better job of controlling/getting rid of odor, esp. during the "oh-so-lovely" time of the month, in the most gentle way. By the way, both Walgreens and Target (and most likely other drugstores) sell a generic brand of Summer's Eve (I've only tried these two generic cleaners) and they seem to work the same as SE. Just as an FYI, I'm not sure if I particularly have a problematic odor issue, but I do have a nose of a bloodhound that makes me overly sensitive to odors, esp. my own ;)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Nothing on the inside, since the vagina is self-cleaning and douching can upset the balance and cause infections. I just use my regular body wash outside the area, but some irritate all the same and I have to discontinue use. I had that problem with B&BW shower gels. :(

I'm glad you asked this question. Sexual health is so often glossed over and it's important to have open discussion!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I use the Dove unscented bar as well. I'm not really sensitive down there, but don't like to use stuff with fragrance on that area!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Thanks for setting the precedent!! We're all sisters so we should be able to discuss anything amongst ourselves. That being said, I don't use a separate cleanser. God blessed me with a pretty strong constitution and I rarely experience sensitivity/reactions. I had a bathroom incident very early into puberty and lets just say that hydrogen peroxide is a definite no-no!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Glycerine soap to shave with, plain water to rinse things off otherwise. I find that's all that's required.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I just use whatever shower gel I have.
random question - do women usually get bikini waxes for that area or do they shave them? Sorry! not sure where to ask this haha

    1. I use a trimmer (Remington Women's Body & Bikini for under $20 at Wal-Mart). Any time I've tried regular razors I get wicked itching and ingrown hairs. The trimmer I can adjust how much hair is left and it doesn't pull the hair or cut below the skin. I haven't tried waxing...too chicken.

  68. I do the whole shebang on my girly bits!

In currently using Summers Eve, but I've used others (vagisil, poise, etc.)

I also use a spray currently by FDS, and "freshen up" with wipes!

I hate feeling "unfresh", so I suppose I go a bit overboard!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I use whatever body wash on hand; luckily I haven't had any issues w/scented products.

I also get Brazilians & found the best way to prevent ingrowns is to apply a drop of salicylic acid body wash (I use the CVS version) to a loofah complexion facial pad (I got mine at Whole Foods but Ulta, Target, Wal-Mart, etc all sell them) & then lightly buff in a circular motion along my bikini line. Since I started using these 2 products I very rarely get ingrowns anymore & I used to get them all the freakin time!

  70. The actual genitals? Water only, although I wipe with my rinsed-off bath pouf during my period, and I clean my menstrual cup with normal body wash or soap, so I suppose a little bit of soap gets in there unintentionally. It's self-cleaning, after all, so unless some other gunk gets in there somehow that's all ya need!

  71. Obviously you are a pioneer and we want to talk about this! Thanks for stepping up! To answer, I either use Summers Eve for sensitive skin or Purpose liquid face wash (PH balanced and super gentle). Tried a lot of other "twinkle" washes and these work for me. I am a type 1 diabetic so as another poster put it I have to be super careful about the "yeastie beasties".

  72. Yes! I splurge on Sliquid Splash and I love it. I order through drugstore dot com.

  73. I normally use whatever I have on hand. However, I do have to avoid bubble baths like the plague. Makes me a sad panda.

  74. Hey G.! I also use Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar!!! I love it. It's really gentle and doesn't irritate my "area." Great question, by the way, and I'm glad you asked it! It's important for us girls to talk about good products for our delicate places! :)

  75. I use Cetaphil Cleanser. I have not had any issues with it. I like that it's gentle, and it does not lather.

  77. I love that you asked this kind question!!! I loved reading the responses (that sounds weird!?! :-/) but it was interesting to read what others have experienced. I just use regular water, using any kind of body wash just made my girly bits itch like crazy (not an attractive look!!)

  79. surprised at the massive feedback, but i dont tend to read the question blog posts but i just happened to click on this one and it was right up my ally. i never used to use anything special, whatever i used on my body i would use there, but last year something went haywire and i was getting horrible burning and itching, but it wasnt a yeast related issue, so i went to the doc and he said stop using soap completely. i had been using a citrus scented body wash back then but i said heck no, but i found a brand similar to summers eve, and its been working great, not a problem since i started it

  80. Very late to reply, but doing it now, anyway. I just use the regular soap or body wash I am using on my body for the areas around my lady bits, but just clean that area with water. I've had never really thought twice about this topic, but I think the comments in this post are very informative!
