Back at the end of December when I posted about how Herbal Essences was bringing back their formulas from the 1990s in the pink and yellow bottles, I heard from many of you who were extremely happy about this (seriously--you guys were really happy about this!).
So I'm delighted to tell you that reader Brandie spotted the new-old favorites at her local Target the other day. They're not yet available for purchase on the Target website, but you can click here to view the Shine Collection (click on a product to access the store locator) and click here to view the Smooth Collection (click on a product to access the store locator).
It looks like the bottles have been slightly updated, although still very reminiscent of the original design. Also, I can't remember if the shampoos in the original line were silicone-free, but they are now (and the conditioners are sulfate-free). Take a peek:

Herbal Esssences fans: have you spotted the Shine or Smooth Collections in your area yet? Are you excited to get them? Have you already tried them? Thoughts? Thanks again, Brandie, for the heads-up!
I tried the shine conditioner. It made my hair look greasy. Smells awesome though.
ReplyDeleteI somehow missed that it's only the yellow and pink coming back-- now I'm really bummed because I loved loved loved the green and was really looking forward to having it again. :(
ReplyDeleteYes, Yes, Yes!! That is the heavenly shampoo I have been longing for!!
DeleteI TOTALLY AGREE BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL GREEN BOTTLE OF HERBAL ESSENCE WITH THE ORIGINAL HERBAL SMELL I PLEAD. there is nothing like it out there and Reno is right, "heavenly shampoo" and make a body wash to go with it.
DeleteI Love retro stuff and I remember using these as a child so I am definitely going to pick up a pair!
ReplyDeleteOMG am I dreaming??? I was absolutely devastated when these were nowhere to be found...the pink shampoo was the only shampoo on earth that made my hair smell so good and actually lasted, I've been hunting for shampoos with similar results but no such luck...I can't believe it!!! Thank you for the post, I am seriously so excited for this!!
ReplyDeleteYES YES YES!!! I am SO stoked about this--need a bottle ASAP! I hope the drugstores in my area have them!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED the original Herbal Essence :) I might have to pick this up if I see it! Seeing these bottles is a major throw back lol
ReplyDeletedo you know how long they will sell these? are they permanent?
ReplyDeleteJust tried them yesterday.....they smell amazing, i felt like i went back 8 years!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get these!! <3
ReplyDeleteOMG! I'm running over there right now!!! :)
ReplyDeleteYay! Do you think they'll bring back the yummy smelling hairspray from that era? I think it was a light blue bottle maybe. It had a similar shape to the pink and yellow bottles.
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I loved that stuff! I think I still have a bottle of it just for nostalgia's sake. :)
DeleteI hope so, I loved that stuff! I still have a bottle somewhere just for the sake of nostalgia. :)
DeleteI'll probably smell them. Are these limited? I will probably buy it for old times sake, but I wonder what it will do to my hair.
ReplyDeleteThey have these at Walmart also!!
ReplyDeleteI got really excited when I saw them at kmart yesterday. The pink one was my childhood shampoo and I really dislike the new herbal essence shampoos. Right when I runn out of shampoo I'm definely getting them no questons asked. XD
ReplyDeleteGetting that pink bottle as soon as I spot it! I can't wait for that nostalgic scent!!
ReplyDeleteI'm almost done with my current shampoo and conditioner. I think I'll pick the pink bottle line up for old time's sake. :)
ReplyDeleteOmg! I saw this in Target today and couldn't believe my eyes! I remember loving the smell of the yellow one...
ReplyDeleteI really LOVED the conditioner when these were out and I stocked up when they were discontinued. I STILL have some in my stock!
ReplyDeleteAlthough they are bringing them back I am quite skeptical that they are anything like the originals. They were not sulphate and silicone free and unfortunately I am one of those heads of hair that need those things to keep my hair cheap and frizz free.
i have been looking for years for the ORIGINAL herbal essence in the clear bottle with green shampoo. the bottle had sort of psychedelic flowers all over the label. THAT is the herbal essence i wait for. I will sniff these, but so far as i can see, my beloved herbal essence from the 60s has not returned.
ReplyDeleteYes! I've never forgotten that wonderful aroma. If I remember the formula was a bit drying...but that scent...unforgettably wonderful. (Have I just dated myself?)
DeleteMy husband loved these, especially the smell of the yellow bottle, and I remember scouring Big Lots trying to find them once they vanished from Target, etc. Of course I had to tease him that it was the commercials he loved!
ReplyDelete*howls with laughter*
ReplyDeleteof course the shampoo is silicone free and the conditioner is sulfate free! You don't use silicone in shampoo, you use it in conditioner; you don't put sulfates in conditioner, those go in shampoo!
Thank you, I was going to post the same thing! This is totally a marketing ploy to try to draw in the people who are looking for those buzz words but might not pay enough attention!
DeleteThat said, I bought the yellow one anyway for nostalgia's sake. I'll use about once a week for the scent, but because I have sulfate sensitivities I'll be using my sulfate free *shampoo* and silicone free *conditioner* the rest of the week!
I know, I was so disappointed about this. I was hoping that I could get the old school Herbal Essences scent in a sulfate-free version since I have given up sulfates completely. I was so disappointed when I saw these in Walmart and it was only the conditioner that was sulfate-free. But it still has silicones! I gave those up, too, so unfortunately this is a pass for me.
DeleteI want them to bring back THE original Herbal Esscents - the one from the 70s! NOTHING on earth smelled that good... It would probably devour my hair now but I would still buy it... :)
ReplyDeleteI have found a very close dupe of the original green Herbal Essence from the 1970s. It's called Vanart, it's made in Mexico, and I've only found it at WalMart. Super cheap. It dries my hair out so I only use it about every second or third time I wash my hair, but it smells fantastic! I like the smell so much that sometimes I use it like bubble bath.
DeleteAm I the only one old enough to remember the 1970s Herbal Essences? It was bright green with a lady washing her hair in a forest pond on the label. That was my childhood shampoo- the 90s version was college era shampoo for me.
ReplyDeleteNo I remember that too.....so good to smell.
DeleteI've seen these at Walmart and CVS too.
ReplyDeleteYes yes yes! I am thrilled about this re-release. :)
ReplyDeleteHerbal Essences should also bring back the old mousse in the white bottle with the little tube at the top that you had to bend for the product to come out. The new mousses are absolutely horrible
ReplyDeleteYay it doesn't sound like the shampoo is sulfate free - backwards I know, but my scalp HATES sulfate free shampoos! I'm really excited to try it, I loved them in the 90's and my mom rarely let me get them for some reason. So this will probably be my spring/summer shampoo; I'm using the HE honey line right now.
ReplyDeleteI loved these shampoos! Does anyone know if they work the same? Hope they didn't jack with the formula. Also, I hope they bring back the green one!!! Loved that!! I honestly stopped using HE after their discontinued their "Original" products (not the one from the 70's ;)
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember their daily defense line? I loved that stuff!!!
Did anyone see the leave in?
ReplyDeleteIt was so good on my daughters hair.( 3C) A few years ago I found some in a dollar store bought five bottles. My daughters still ask me for it.
Amazon seems to be selling the other older shampoos as well through their Herbal Essence store. They have the Fruit Blends and Intensive Blend kinds. They also have the hair dye (which I hear is hard to find). It's a bit more expensive here, but maybe it's a sign that they will be sold in stores soon!
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I've been using the hair dye for years to make my dark hair super blonde and nothing else works half as good. I stocked up when it went off the shelves but now I only have two left :( I saw an ad the other day for their “color me happy" line that even had a picture of herbal essences dye next to the shampoo and conditioner but they still haven't brought it back! It brought my hopes up just to have them crash to the ground.
DeleteBelieve it or not, the "new style" pink bottles smell a lot like the original did. I was really surprised. But I'm so so so excited for these to come back! The yellow was my favorite :)
ReplyDeleteI was lost all this time without the pink h.e. I literally squealed yesterday when I found these at walmart. The new stuff was awful I tried every shampoo at cvs almost and nothing compared. If u ask me they should ditch the new formula stuff and continue the classic line bring all the old herbal essences back. I don't remember anyone being excited when it changed. Walmart sold the pink for a long time after the transition and I bought it for as long as I could. I could not be happier.
ReplyDeleteI loved this shampoo! I grew up with it and I really didn't like the new line they introduced. I hope it's here to stay! Just picked up a bottle of the shine collection shampoo and conditioner :)
ReplyDeleteThe 1973/74 originals (flowery minty grassy pine) WAS THE BEST ONE AND WOULD FIT RIGHT IN WITH OUR TIMES. Something is wrong that Proctor and Gamble just won't bring it back. Why would they do that?
