When it comes to blogs, are you more of a lurker, commenter or a bit of both?
I find that I'm a bit of both. There are certain blogs I read all the time (beauty and otherwise) where the community feels a bit exclusive (as opposed to inclusive) and I don't always feel comfortable putting in my two cents. But there are other blogs that feel more welcoming and I try to comment on those blogs as time permits. There are also certain blogs that I might happen across purely by chance, and it might be the first time I've ever read the blog, but something about a particular post compels me to comment. For example, if I've googled a tip for bloggers on something like HTML, etc. and I found the answer on a blogging site, I will make the effort to thank the author for providing good content that helped me solve a problem. So I guess it really depends. I'm a chronic lurker on some blogs and not so much on others.
I always comment, I feel awful if I've read a whole post someones taken time and effort to post I feel obliged to tell them what I think (always good ofc)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if its just me who feels this way though! LOL
Jazz x
That's very sweet of you, Jazz. :)
DeleteDefinitely a bit of both. I understand what you mean about exclusive and inclusive and I always feel 'included' here on your blog! There are one or two others, but mainly I lurk.
ReplyDeleteI feel comfortable commenting on those blogs where the blogger takes the time to respond, even if it's days later. It demonstrates that the blogger cares about the readers' comments, and take the time to acknowledge us. Otherwise, why bother blogging if you don't care about your readers?
BTW, you are still the best, G!
Isis, you are too kind!! Thank you, thank you. *hugs*
DeleteI care about my readers more that you can possibly imagine, which is why I HATE it when I don't have a chance to reply to comments. This haunts me in my sleep! Seriously. I often wonder if it's worth it to reply to a comment after several days have gone by, because I always feel like someone isn't going to keep checking for an answer after a day or two, so they probably won't see my reply. So thank you for that!
When it comes down to it, and I have to choose between replying to comments or posting new content ( on days when my real life is hectic and I can't do both), I always opt for new content and I really, really hope everyone is ok with that. :)
I really don't read too many blogs but when I do I like to particpate in the conversations! So definately a commenter!! As you can tell G.! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I am SO grateful that you've chosen to be a regular commenter here, Robin!!! :) xo
DeleteCommenter for the most part. Can't seem to resist putting my two cents in, LOL. The exception is certain folks on YT who get thousands of comments on every video.. just seems like a waste of time when I doubt the comment would ever be seen.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that you can't resist sharing your two cents!! :)
DeleteI love to comment on blogs. However I'm mostly a lurker because I tend to zip right through them on Google Reader since I follow so many. And there are many times I want to comment, but am too lazy to go through the motion.
ReplyDeleteOh I know how that goes! I recently started reading certain sites through the Pulse app, and there are several steps you have to take to open something on your browser in order to comment, and sometimes I just can't do it!
DeleteA bit of both. But I'm a little shy sometimes. For me, though, if it's about a subject I find interesting, I've learned something new or interesting from it or if I feel that I have something to contribute, I'll comment.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you comment here, despite your shyness, means SO much to me! :)
DeleteSo timely for me as i just started commenting! its not that I've ever felt like this blog was exclusive its just that most of the time my opinion is so close to someone else's that its already been expressed! i think that's probably why i love NC so much in the first place - well written and right in line with my needs and interests!
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for that!!
DeleteI have no way of really knowing if someone gets a welcoming vibe here (I certainly hope it feels welcoming!) unless I hear it from readers, so I really, really appreciate that. :)
Also, please don't ever feel like you don't want to comment just because someone else has already said something similar. As a blogger and a reader, I can tell you that when I read reviews on products, it always makes a bigger impact on me when I see several ”loved it” or ”hated it” comments vs. just one or two! So even if your comment is just ”joining the chorus”, it's still extremely valuable and much appreciated. :)
Commenter! But I actually got really into commenting when I started blogging. It takes a lot of time to put together a post, take pictures, edit it, schedule it and it's nice get a "hey! I'm reading! And I think what you're saying is interesting/cool/funny/important!" from readers. And I'm sure other bloggers like that too so why not spread the love? :)
ReplyDeleteI love your philosophy, Alice! Very, very sweet of you and I totally agree. :)
DeleteLurker here! I don't usually comment unless the blogger poses a question or needs feedback. I guess it's b/c I migrated from watching beauty gurus on youtube (where I never leave comments) to reading beauty blogs that I feel hesitant to leave a comment. Btw, I found you via FrmHeadtoToe's video :D
ReplyDeleteComments are much appreciated here, so thank you for choosing to comment on this post! :)
DeleteAnd thanks for letting me know you found me through Jen (LOVE her!!).
Same here. I try to comment as much as possible because I know people put in lots of work to make their blogs stand out.
ReplyDeleteThat is very much appreciated! xo
DeleteI do both. Mainly a lurker though in the last few months. While I was actively blogging I always commented but now that I hardly ever blog. I lurk. I need to get back to commenting its fun seeing what others think as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to comment on this post! :)
DeleteI read at least thirty to forty different blogs a day but I find that I comment on them very sparingly. It could be due to the fact that I've always been more of a lurker; I'm still a bit shy even thought I've got so much going through my head when I'm doing my daily reading. I am more likely to comment in a place where there is less activity; seems that my comment is more likely to be seen in an empty space than in one that's inundated with comments. e-mail is another alternative I often consider when I feel moved to speak up, but many times the editors don't just have that kind of thing out in the open. Still, I love to observe and contribute in equal parts!
ReplyDeleteGiven the amount of blogs you read, i'm so happy you chose to comment on this post! Thank you. :)
DeleteFor your blog I always read it and comment from time to time. Other ones, it depends. But this is my favorite blog to read, hands-down.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, thank you SO much, Heidi!! *hugs* xo
DeleteI'm a chronic lurker. I just feel like I never have anything of value to add in the comments section.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you never, ever feel that way here! I love hearing as much input as possible about everything I post and would love to hear from you! :)
DeleteI comment on most blogs, but there are a couple I mostly read and don't comment on, I don't really know why. When I get a response, I am more likely to continue to comment. I don't need to get a response every time - even every 5th time is enough - or even seeing responses to other people is enough. It makes it feel like the blogger is reading and interacting. Occasionally, bloggers don't respond at all to anyone, and I am much less likely to comment on those posts.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! As long as I know a blogger is making some type of effort, even if they can only respond to a few comments per week, the effort itself makes me more compelled to comment vs a blog that's 100% one-sided.
DeleteI'm a mix of both! Not to sound crazy but there's just some blogs that I love to read but I don't feel like I belong...if that makes any sense lol ive only been following your blog for about two months or so but I love it! You always get the scoop and give great reviews...your readers are also helpful to each other which is a nice change from all the mean people on youtube! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is SO sweet of you to say!! Thank you! :) I agree about my readers--they really are the most kind and helpful people I've ever come across on the internet and i'm incredibly lucky and grateful to have them.
DeleteAnd you're not crazy at all! I feel the same way about certain blogs...love to read them, but don't feel comfortable commenting. :/
More of a lurker, but I do comment a lot on your blog since you ask us lots of questions.
ReplyDeleteYay! So glad and grateful for that! :)
DeleteTotal lurker, but I have been commenting on here more often. You really made quite a community here, G, and you're very on top of it, and all your readers are helpful as well. Thank you!! That said, I tend to catch up on blogs at work, so it's difficult to comment since I'm using browsing more than seriously reading (I mark to read later the serious reads).
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for that, Sarah. You have no idea how much that means to me. I am incredibly lucky to have this little community here, and I never, ever take that for granted. I very much appreciate that you think i'm on top of it, because to tell you the truth, I feel like i'm always behind and trying so hard to catch up! So that really means a lot. :) xo
DeleteI mostly lurk since I read blogs via the Reeder app on my iPhone--commenting requires me to go to the blog, and there seems to be issues if I want to go back and edit something I have already typed. f I do comment it's usually on posts like this that request feedback, or posts that are really inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Liz! Your feedback is much appreciated! :)
DeleteI'm usually a lurker, but I'm trying to stop that. It's just that sometimes someone has already posted what I was going to post and I hate feeling like I'm "spamming" even though I'm not.
ReplyDeleteYour opinion is always welcomed, and much appreciated, here! :)
DeleteBoth. If bloggers ask questions, I guess I'm more likely to comment, ha!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Phoebe! :)
DeleteI am such a lurker! I comment from time to time but I'm just really shy, lol
ReplyDeleteShy lurkers are very much encouraged to come out of their shells here! :) We would never bite. Promise! :) xo
DeleteI do a little of both. It depends on whether or not I have something interesting to say. I like it when people comment on my blog and share their feelings about something, so I comment on other blogs so I can share my views. I like the interactivity of some of the blogs I read.
ReplyDeleteThanks, honey! I love that interactivity too. :)
DeleteI'm a lurker. I don't often go back to read replies after I comment, and often I don't have really anything that needs to be said... so I just don't comment. The few times I comment and hope for a reply... I bookmark the post and check it frequently :D
ReplyDeleteWell I hope you come and see this: thanks so much for taking the time to comment here! :)
DeleteI comment as much as I can-- even to say that I enjoyed the post! :)
ReplyDeleteYou're such a sweetheart, Lacey! :) xo
DeleteI used to be a lurker until I started blogging. The I realized how much receiving comments kept me motivated to keep going! Now I totally make an effort to leave comments, although I agree with the poster that it's hard to leave comments when you read in a reader on a mobile device.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very sweet, and considerate, thing to do. xi
DeleteI've been a lurker for a little while, but I enjoy receiving comments on my own blog, so I decided to start leaving my own!
ReplyDeleteI'm mostly a reader (that sounds so much more civilised than lurker, does it not? teehee) but I've been trying to sprinkle a few more comments around when I can. :)
ReplyDeleteI too have run into the mobile device problem though. Before I got my smartphone I never would have thought that leaving a blog comment could be so unwieldy. Hahaha, and lest anyone wonder, I'm leaving this one from my desktop computer!
Lol! :) Well thanks for hopping on the ol' desktop for this comment! Much appreciated!
DeleteI mostly lurk wherever I go, but I comment here from time to time because it's very welcoming here. :)
ReplyDeleteYay!! Thank you so much for letting me know you feel that way. It is MUCH appreciated! :)
DeleteI'm a bit of both. Whether I comment or not depends on the subject of the post and if I have something to add. I've found that when I comment on blogs for and by writers I get the most responses. I've had some great conversations with writers. For other subjects it depends on who's blog it is.
ReplyDeleteYou try to respond to everyone most of the time. I don't know how you make the time.
Thank you so much for saying that. I try, and sometimes I fail miserably, but I just always hope that readers understand and know that I read and value every comment, even when I can't respond. Sometimes real life gets in the way, and I can't always respond...and I hate it when that happens. :(
DeleteI mostly lurk, because I really don't voice my opinion anywhere, but I love reading your blog, G, it's something I look forward to reading everyday after I get home from school. (: Oh so juvenile I sound, haha!
ReplyDeleteAaaw, thank you SO much for that! *hugs* :)
DeleteIt depends... If I don't have something nice to say, I will usually not comment. (like a post I found reviewing a $300 dollar facial oil that you could make in your kitchen :/ ) But if I know of a dupe to a product, like the new Picture Polish Ariel's Tale being a dupe to Jordana Celestial, I definitely let people know.
ReplyDeleteOoh, thanks for that tip, KD!!!
DeleteI am a lurker every Time I try to Comment it never works
ReplyDeleteIt worked on this post! :)
DeleteI am a lurker but I love your website
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you!
DeleteI'm a bit of both. I pretty much just lurk here though...in fact, I think this is only my 2nd comment. Sometimes when you're new to a blog, it's kind of hard to just jump in when you haven't been around that long, plus I'm kinda shy too. Sometimes, I feel like I don't have anything to add so I just read and not comment.
ReplyDeleteWell I am so thrilled that you decided to comment for the second time here! I would LOVE to hear what you have to say on any future posts, so please don't be a stranger, ok? *hugs*
DeleteI'm definitely I lurker when I read beauty blogs. I feel that since my collection is so small since I'm just really starting to get into makeup, I don't believe I have anything substantial to add. I really feel like this blog has a welcoming vibe to it and I feel that I'm more likely to comment on these blogs since most of the posts are on makeup products that I can actually afford! I really appreciate all the hard work you've put into this blog!
ReplyDeleteJust because your collection is small doesn't mean that you don't have valuable insights! :) Please don't ever let that stop you from commenting here, ok? I'd love for you to join the party, and thank you so much for the very kind words. xo
DeleteI'm a bit of both. I definitely comment when I feel that the post was helpful.
ReplyDeleteWell thanks for taking the time to comment on this post! It's much appreciated! :)
DeleteAlmost always a lurker. I comment here more than on any other blog, and I don't even comment here all that much.
ReplyDeleteWhaaaa? I totally consider you a loyal and regular commenter here, g.! And i'm so grateful for that! xo
DeleteI'm more of a lurker, but I need to get better about commenting more. The other ladies that pointed out how much time and effort goes into a post are right (I blog too), and it does seem a shame not to acknowledge the work put into a post I've read.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit of both but it depends on the blog. If they reply to comments often I'm more likely to leave one.
ReplyDeleteI also read a lot of beauty chemistry blogs so I almost always have questions to ask in the comments (:
I generally only comment if I feel that I have something of value to say. I don't comment when I have nothing substantial to add because I fear that "Great post!"-style comments seem insincere. On the other hand, I know the kind of work that goes into blog posts- especially reviews and posts with photos- and I feel guilty when I don't acknowledge that work.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to comment more these days. I'm more likely to do so on a blog like Nouveau Cheap, thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and the clear commenting policy that supports it.
