The Wednesday Question

What's your favorite eyeliner to use for your waterline?

My eyeliner review from yesterday prompted this question. As most of you probably already know, my Holy Grail liner for my waterline is Palladio Herbal Precision Eye Liner in Black Onyx (more details here). It's the only liner I've ever used that manages to stay put on my waterline for 8+ hours and, trust me, I've tried a lot (drugstore, high end, etc.). I'd love to hear all about your Holy Grail liner for your waterline!

  1. I have yet to find anything that can stand up to my oily skin, so nothing lasts on my waterline. I am allergic to Bismuth Oxychloride, so some of the reportedly best ones to use are a no-go for me. I have tried UD 24/7, Revlon, Pretige, Nyx, L'Oreal, gel liners, pencils, you name it... They all fade before I can get out of the house.

    1. you sound just like me! but i'm not sure if i'm allergic to bismuth oxychloride. which are the liners that contain that chemical and is supposed to be good?

    2. JuliexOX, Bismuth Oxychloride is a mineral used mostly in mineral makeup. It is an irritant for a lot of people. It is actually one molecule away from arsenic BUT is not poisonous just irritating to the skin. SO many companies use it in their products because it is a cheap filler, INCLUDING Bare Minerals.

RRStar, have you tried elf cream liners? That is what I use in my kit for models and brides who want liner on the water line. It is a great, creamy product to work with but also will stay on the water line :)

  2. definitely revlon grow luscious lash liner! i use the onyx one. it's super pigmented and doesn't budge on me, which is nothing short of a miracle since as a contact wearer and someone who is allergic to everything, my eyes are always watering.

  3. this is a great wednesday question topic. i've had such trouble the last several years with eyeliners running because of allergies. while i'm also a contacts wearer, i've had to give up on them entirely so i can keep makeup on my eyes for more than 15 minutes. i haven't tried the revlon grow luscious lash liner nor the palladio one that ppl are talking about (and now i must go and get them today to try!) but i have tried all the reputed hardcore waterproof ones from sephora and drugstores. so far, UD24/7 and milani stay the longest without running but -- if my eyes tear up a lot, they will run too. sadly, i don't really have a HG eyeliner. the nyc waterproof pencil liners used to work perfectly fine for me until my eyes started to tear so much from allergies starting a few years ago. now they disappear. the super-pigmented ones like UD 24/7 and the waterproof liquid liners run in a horrible "tammy-faye-baker-crying" sort of way. i was so bummed when i couldn't even use the stila waterproof liquid liner or wetnwild H20-proof liquid liners without getting horrible black ink all down my outer lower corners of my eyes. and like i said in another post today, i can swatch those on my hands and they will not budge for over 24 hours, even though i'm washing my hands constantly with soap and warm water. unbelievable what is in my tears to break down waterproof liners they way it does.

  4. I wish I had a HG liner for my waterline. Milani liquifye smudges and gets on my contacts, same for UD 24/7. Mac smolder smudges like crazy. Blacktrack has been most promising but it too still smudges after an hour or two. I wish I found the solution to this! My eyelids aren't oily either. I am thinking about trying Milani 24 hour liner. I had it before for regular lining but lost it somehow. That didn't budge on my lid for anything. Till then... No HG for me =[

  5. For me it is a constant compromise between comfort, performance, and color. Most creamy liners drive my eyes nuts, as do most waterproof ones. Feels like I have vaseline in my eyes, or they just flat out burn. All things considered the Palladio precision liners are the best, yet they are not as pigmented as they could be and very limited in color. I seldom wear blue, or black.. the grey and brown are my staples, and the purple is very pink and gives me "rabbit eyes". They have no green, or white. They are extremely comfortable, have a drier texture so they do not smush or clump, stay on very well (staying power is the best of anything I have tried), and come off easily at the end of the day. The Palladio eye crayons are another option, they do very well in the WL, but do feel odd at first.. kind of cool and wet.. but once they dry it's fine, you just have to keep your eyes open and get through the drying process.. and they are a bit difficult to apply because of their size. They have a lot of unique colors and several lighter shades that are great for WL, not as harsh as white. Before I found Palladio (thank you G.) I wore Rimmel kohl kajal, lots of really nice colors, go on really nice, soft and smooth and super comfy in the eye.. but do not last the entire day, so you have to reapply. They do last much longer than any other kohl I have tried, and they do not smear or run just fade. Not good outside of the eye, the Rimmel exaggerate liners are much better for that. I also have had good results with Maybelline eye studio gel liner.. but you have to apply them with a brush (I like the ELF small smudge brush for inside the eye or the small precision brush for outside) so they are time consuming and I tend not to reach for them. Very pigmented, smooth application, comfortable in the eye, between Palladio and the Rimmel kohl in staying power. I have tried ELF, WnW, PF, and Black radiance gel liner as well and prefer the Maybelline to all of them.

I recently bought a deluxe sample of UD 24hr (dual sided black and brown)and four NYX slide on liners to test for WL. I found them virtually identical to each other, except for price (full size: $20 for UD, $6 for NYX at cherry culture). Highly pigmented and creamy, almost too creamy though they tend to go where you do not want them and clump in lashes or smush. Neither of them hurt my eyes but they were wetter and not as comfortable (kind of felt sticky and heavy all day when you close your eyes), the staying power is not as good as the Palladio, and at the same time what is left at the end of the day is much harder to remove, you really have to get in there and scrub, not the best thing inside the eye. I had some minor problems with smearing under the lashes and at the corners of the eye. Really beautiful colors, I think they would be much better "outside the eye" liners. I also recently tried a Too Faced perfect eyes waterproof liner that came with a palette I bought.. it was a fantastic liner, pigmented to the max, stayed all day, but smeared quite badly in the WL, I was picking it out of the corners of my eyes all day. I swatched it on my hand and it stayed over 24hrs even through several hand washings and a shower.

  6. I use a wet brush and regular eyeshadow, either in charcoal or dark brown. Works just fine for me. My current go-to palette is the Nyx "For Your Eyes Only" Smokey Eyes.

  7. I have enough trouble getting liner to stay on my lower lash line, much less on my waterline! My holy grail liner, though, is Sephora's Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner. I can only vouch for the black, though. I tried the charcoal grey, and it was terrible.

  8. I love the Revlon Colorstay Retractable liner in Black!

  9. I don't use eyeliner on my waterline! I think I'm one of a very few women who don't.

    1. That makes two of us. I'm terrified of eye infections. Besides, I can't draw a straight line to save my life! ;)

  10. I don't wear eyeliner on my waterline either! I have heard that L'oreal infallible liner is good for the waterline in contact wearers though.....

  11. Still looking for a new HG for waterline. I mentioned earlier that it used to be Almay Bright Eyes Defining duo. The purple case, one end black the other white. I cannot believe this was ever discontinued.

  12. I really like Kat Von D liners, I got a mini black one with the palette I recieved, and loved it! It doesn't last all that long, so maybe I'll try Palladio's liner. I used to use Rimmel's waterproof liner but that runs like crazy! It gives me raccoon eyes!

You are right G, this is a good question because I'm looking for a new liner, that last. I'm always wondering what others use.

  13. i am still looking for the "one" its like a good man :P omg searching for the right man and non-smearing black liner :D

  14. Urban Decay's 24-hour eyeliners in Dime and Baked. I know, this is a high-end brand, but I bought them for $2 each on Hautelook. They don't come off, even though I live in a super humid, super muggy environment (think southern Gulf Coast US). Awesome!

  15. I use Guerlain powder kohl. Yes, expensive, but lasts all day on my waterline and I've had the same one for 4 years. I use it twice a week, give or take.
