What a Hussy: OPI for Merle Norman

In honor of Labor Day (right around the corner, can you believe it?) Merle Norman is promoting some red, white and blue, made-in-the-USA products, which happen to include an OPI shade that was created exclusively for Merle Norman and can only be purchased at Merle Norman Studios (click here for a store locator). Apparently this shade has been around for a while (Google searches show it was promoted for Valentine's Day this year) but since this is the first I've heard of it, I wanted to be sure you knew about too:

  2. I was fortunate to get this polish from a blog sale earlier this year. It's a gorgeous red!

  3. That polish name is just so awkward I can't bring myself to like it. I mean, if someone says "Oh, I love that color, what's it called?" it's just...yeah.

"Harlot," "Jezebel," "minx"...those have a rebellious sort of sexuality to them. People have repurposed them to make the implied (and more-aggressive-than-traditionally-feminine) sexuality a positive thing, whereas I can only imagine very old-fashioned ladies using "hussy" and don't see anyone wanting to "take it back" and own/use for themselves.

(And fwiw I don't have issues with shade names like "Orgasm," "G-Spot," or "Deep Throat" - although I can't quite see the last one as descriptive of an appealing color, really - because while they're sexual in nature they're not specifically descriptive of the person using the product.)

    2. Many years ago, Merle Norman’s nephew desperately wanted to purchase a 1934 Packard but the owner, Mr. Hussey refused to sell it to him for any price.
Eventually the car was purchased & restored to its original condition & color as well as named to honor the man who owned it once.
When the name wouldn't fit on the license plate, it was shortened to "Hussy."

  5. The name "hussy" wasn't the official name for the Packard car, just what that particular family called theirs. I can certainly see why someone wouldn't know that.

Anyone remember the awesome Merle Norman brand polishes? I used to have a couple, but they are long lost :(

    1. Absolutely. I wouldn't expect anyone to know that either, but it's referenced in the press release that I posted above. :)

And I think I vaguely remember those!! was the lid a light beige, faux marble color??

  6. I used to work @ a Merle Norman, I'd pass on the hussy opi & go for the hussy lip pencil plus or the lipstick! Its beautiful! More of a blue based red but with pink & red sparkles in it! Might sound scary buying it looks lovely on! They had a "best of show" collection bag w a mini hussy opi, hussy perfume, & lip polish. Good way to try out the shade!

  7. They have the whole mini bottle set at my local Marshalls for, I believe, 6 bucks. The blue is really pretty but other than that the other colors aren't all that special.
