The Wednesday Question

If money were no issue, would you continue to purchase drugstore beauty products?

I've been using drugstore beauty products since before some of you were born (sad but true) and even if I had all the money in the world, nothing would ever change that. The only difference would be that I'd probably buy ALL of the shades in a new range instead of counting my pennies and only buying the shades that I think might work for me!

I've always been addicted to drugstore beauty products because of their convenience and price points but over the past ten years, drugstore brands have really stepped up their game and, for me personally, many current drugstore beauty products perform just as well, if not better, than some of their higher-end counterparts. But I'll admit that I would probably make more higher-end purchases for color cosmetics (un-dupe-able shadows, polishes, etc.) if I had some extra money in my wallet. Oh, and my fragrance collection would probably be so large that I'd need to buy a new home (which I guess I'd do anyway if money were no issue!).

  1. I will always buy mainly drugstore products because I have and always will be a bargain shopper. I love nothing more than getting a good bang for my buck. If money were no issue, I would only be a little more lax with the coupons! xoxo

  2. I would probably buy more make up forever and urban decay if money were no object :D

  3. Same, there are definitely some drugstore products I like more then high end. I just wish drugstores had testers!

  4. Maybe. I definietly would by some, but I would buy more high end, versus equal parts high end & drugstore like I have now. It's not really that I think drugstore products are less quality, it's just that their are some high end items I've always wanted to try, but can't afford right now. And I also feel that high end makeup has an extra feeling of luxury :)

  5. It's fun to buy a few high-end items, but I love foraging through CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Target for beauty goodies and discounts -- some people hunt in the forest, I hunt in the aisles of those stores. Plus, like you wrote, drugstore products have improved a lot in the last 10 or more years. Now there are hypoallergenic items, foundations and powders that aren't made only for white folks with a pink complexion, and so on. Though I agree with Adeline B., though, that I wish drug stores had testers. The lighting is dreadful sometimes, but at least you can usually return stuff you don't like.

  6. I definitely would. I love seeking out limited edition items!!

  7. I would absolutely still buy drugstore beauty products! Reason #1 I am a bargain shopper, Reason #2 I love Revlon products and if I can get a dupe I feel like I am "pulling one over on the man"! LOL. Reason #3 Some drugstore products are just so much better than anything out there. I read all the time how celebrities and makeup artists love certain products and even though they have tons of money still go to the drugstore. I would however buy super highend shoes and bags!!! LOL again!

  8. Yes. Without a doubt. Because if money weren't an issue for anybody, people would get to compare more products, and all the people who use M.A.C. might finally see that Maybelline can knock their socks off as well ;)

  9. I would absolutely stick with lower-end makeup lines. From what I can see, what you're really paying for with designer brands is the name and fancier packaging. That's not a good enough reason for me to spend my money on them. Even if the higher end stuff were consistently better quality-wise (which, if I've learned anything from beauty blogs, is that it isn't), the law of diminishing returns for me is that no eyeshadow/blush/liner/whatever is worth what the designer brands charge for their products.

The only exception to this rule is that I would probably step up my game in terms of anti-aging products. I'd buy a top of the line moisturizer like Creme de la Mer if it really worked well enough to justify the price tag.

  10. I'd still buy drugstore. Why spend $50 on something when you can get a dupe for $5? I might indulge in an Urban Decay palette once in a while though.

  11. For nail polish and lip gloss, if money were no object, I would buy ALL the polish and lip gloss. High end and drugstore! But all the other stuff, not so much. For example, Creme de la Mer is highly overrated. It turned all my pores into white pustules. I've learned from experience that most beauty items with a high price tag aren't worth the ink on the labels.

  12. Yes! I would probably buy more high end products than I do now, but I still really like some drugstore products.

  13. If money wasn't an issue I think I would just buy products based on the quality and not just the price like I do now. This means that yeah I would end up buying some higher end brands, but I would also be sticking to some of my drugstore favorites that have worked for me time and time again. If you can upgrade, then why wouldn't you? But also, if the drugstore version is better than why would you pay more for something that's just going to be worse?

  14. Don't forget not having to deal with counter service. I hate being "sold" and guilted while I try things out. I would probably buy more high-end eyeshadows, but that is pretty much it.

  15. I would probably only buy a few drugstore products here and there, like mascara and eyeliner but I find high end foundations, powders, blushes, and eyeshadows just work a lot better for me.

  16. Great Answer! I feel the exact same way! It would only allow me to buy more of the product and all the shades they offer and buy some for my friends and family! Drugstore products have really stepped up their game within the past couple of years and i'm LOVING IT! Yet another great question! -Leslie

  17. I think I would continue to buy drugstore products just because I've alway been someone who thinks about where her money goes and there's so many drugstore dupes that I'd feel ripped off if I spend more on the higher end. The only difference is that I could buy anything that caught my fancy (without having to do research so I don't waste my money), drugstore or high-end, and be able to experiment more (different brands, textures, longevity, etc) without feeling bad about having a makeup collection that could easily belong to several makeup artist.

  18. Yes, definitely! Although Revlon is really the only drugstore brand I use on a regular basis, it makes some of my all-time favourite products! I couldn't live without ColourStay foundation and eyeliner and their lipsticks, glosses, and lip butters :)

  19. Yes, I would definitely still buy drugstore. :D I have some drugstore faves that, no matter how rich I got I wouldn't be willing to give up and, they keep coming out with more and more really great stuff so yeah, Walgreen's and CVS would remain my fave haunting grounds.

That isn't to say that, with an unlimited budget I wouldn't glom on more of the fancy stuff, too. Because I would. Oh, yeah! :D

  20. as far as color cosmetics go I think drug store is as good as high end, but if money grew on trees I would definitely stick to high end for skin cosmetics and skin care! Because this is an area where you get what you pay for, drug store foundations are so full of chemical preservatives and filler compared to high and and likewise with skincare, I already buy the more expensive drugstore options, because I refuse to slather my skin in petrolatum and mineral oil! (not to mention sulfates and parabens!) As much as I like the Maybelline fitMe foundation I am afraid to look at the ingredients. Also, like you said, G, my perfume collection would be epic.

  21. I'd probably buy high-end face products like foundation, cleansers etc. but spending money on things like mascara or blush will always be silly to me.

  22. If money were no object. I would be unstoppable at Sephora!! I have only used drug store cosmetics as well, although they are inexpensive than the higher end name brands; I have to admit that I feel like drug store cosmetic prices have increased as well.

  23. What a great question.....hmm i would defintely buy everything L'Occitane makes if i was rolling in the doe...but i would hve to get my drugstore fix now & again...Iman & Revlon stay on my radar

  24. Definitely. I simply do not see the logic in paying 3x as much for the same thing.. or in many cases an inferior product. I shopped strictly drugstore for many years, but recently have tried several high end products.. not a single one was better than what I could buy in the drugstore range, and some of them (TFSS I'm talking to you!) were so terrible they were a complete fail. When a $1 eye primer functions better than one that costs $20.. that is pretty good proof that all you are paying for is the name. I recently splurged on an UD palette (the ammo box).. and while there are some pretty colors in there, the formula is no better than some of my drugstore products, like WnW which I think is much better, smoother and creamier.. and in fact the fallout is so bad in several of the colors they are practically unusable, something I do not experience with any of my drugstore shadows. I paid almost $50 for that palette, I could have bought almost the entire collection of WnW shadows for that. Also, like several others have mentioned, the coupons and sales are a hobby of mine.. and along with collecting LE items are a very big part of what I find pleasurable in purchasing/using cosmetics.

    1. thanks for the insight. owning only a couple high end item, it's hard to know if the other high end stuff are really better than drugstore versions... and when these sales come on (like urban decay's recent one!) i hyperventilate and think im gonna miss out

  25. If money were no issue my home would look like a chemistry lab as I made everything I needed to my own specifications. As a matter of fact, if money were no issue, I would BUILD my own mad scientist lab... Bwhahahahah... Sorry, got carried away there.

  26. I think i get some sort of adrenaline rush when i see how much i save lol. But for reals i notice i have this box filled w high end makeup and i never seem to use it. 27. Honestly, I would buy more high end products (fragrance, skin care and makeup) if money was no issue. I shop primarily at the drugstore for both cost and convience. I also pay more attention to drugstore reviews so I'm more familiar with those products. However, if money was no issue then I would not feel horrible about spending too much on items like mascaras, which have a short lifespan.

  28. Like you, if money were no object, I'd buy the complete range of my favorite drugstore products, particularly the lipsticks!

  29. I would start buying more high end and work the best stuff into my makeup collection. But if I found the drugstore stuff to still be better for me, I would keep those things around. Even if I had unlimited funds, I still want to get the best for my money!

  30. Give up L'Oreal infallible shadows or Revlon lip butters? NEVER! So for sure I would continue to buy drugstore, but I would have all the shades and back-ups of my favorites. I would love to be able to buy high end foundations though and any high end palette that caught my fancy. So definitely continue to buy both and have more of each! lol

    ReplyDelete
  31. I can buy things I like.. Both higher end and drugstore without feeling guilty :-) What a dream!! I definitely wouldn't stop buying drug store products if money was no object, but I would definitely try out higher end brands more.. ( I've been dying for a chantecaille eyeshadow palette... )
Some drug store cosmetic items work wonderfully for me, and beat any High end item in that category I've tried so far ( maybelline age rewind under eye corrector. And physicians formula cashmere bronzer to name a few:)

  32. If money was no object I'd buy everything I could be it drugstore, prestige or designer. It's not about where the product is purchased but rather if the product is good quality or not.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd definitely still buy drugstore. I probably just wouldn't *limit* myself to drugstore brands so much. I'd be less wary of trying out new brands that might or might not work for me.

I love my Physician's Formula eyeliners and my Cover Girl shadows/lipstains. I wouldn't give them up until and unless I found something I like better. Same goes for my multi-drugstore-brand nail polishes (Sally Hansen, Wet & Wild, Sinful Colors, Finger Paints, China Glaze, the Color Club sets from Ross...)
