The Wednesday Question

What type of skin do you have (dry, normal, oily, combo) and what's your current favorite moisturizer?

I'm asking this for selfish reasons, because I have yet to find my Holy Grail affordable facial moisturizer (some have come close, but I've yet to find a product that has completely stopped my wandering eye!). So let's hear it: what type of skin do you have and what moisturizer works for you?

  1. I have combination skin, I'm 41 and I never suffered from pimples or black heads until now :( so I really have not found a good moisturizer because the ones that I have used - clinique, philosophy, garnier, you name it, have made me skin greasier and it brakes out so much easily. Right now i'm using a sample that the company from Mario B. (I don't know how to spell his last name LOL) sent me and so far I am liking it, if his drying cream-paste for pimples and moisturizer continue to help me like they have so far, I think I am going to stick w/them :o)

I loved your tweet review of the L'OREAL BB cream!

  2. Oh my goodness! I don't usually answer these questions but feel I must since I have a moisturizer for the daytime that I have used to the bottom of the jar at least 3 separate times and repurchased! I am pretty much a shop around gal with everything so this is monumental!! First of all, I have extremely dry skin that is only "enhanced" by the dry climate I live in. That being said...the moisturizer I keep coming back to is A Perfect World w/SPF 25 by Origins. It is a bit expensive but if you only buy one and use it all up it is worth it, versus tons of junky moisturizers at drugstore price that i end up throwing away! Now, the holy grail I am looking for is a great nightime moisturizer...any ideas??

  3. I have combination skin - and very oily on the nose and forehead. I know you asked for affordable, but I've tried so many and the only one I truly love is from LUSH - it's their Vanishing Cream. The great thing about it is a little goes a long way, so it takes me a while to go through it. Also, since I started using it (in combination with my Ultrabland and Herbalism cleanser at night) I have had no breakouts. Amazing!

  4. I have oily skin in the summer and combination skin in the winter. And my skin is slightly acne prone especially during that time of the month. I am currently using the original Olay beauty fluid moisturizer, but I don't love it. It moisturizes pretty well, but I'm not completely in love with it. I need an affordable moisturizer that hydrates my skin, but controls oil/acne at the same time, which I haven't come across yet. Any recommendations?

  5. I'm a little on the oily side.

I'm also allergic/sensitive to something in 99% of commercial moisturizers, so I make my own with a blend of sweet almond and jojoba oil, plus a little essential oil (lavender and lemon) for scent.

I know, it sounds odd to intentionally put oils on oily skin, but the jojoba in particular actually helps regulate oil production, since it's very similar to natural skin oils.

  6. I have combination skin - oily T-zone, normal to somewhat dry everywhere else. I've been using Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 15, and really like it!

  7. oil of olay sensitive skin spf15 lotion. Doesnt interfere with makeup, light, etc.

  8. I have oily skin and right now my favorite moisturizer is the Mary Kay Timewise Moisturizer for Combo/Oily skin.

  9. My skin is combination, with mild roseacea, and I think I found my HG moisturizer. It's CeraVe AM SPF30. It is broad spectrum and has niacinamide which calms the roseacea and makes the rest of my face soft look great as well (and feel great!) Plus, it's about $12-13 in CVS, and a bit cheaper in Target. They make a PM version also, without the SPF, but I haven't tried that yet. Just throwing it out there. ;)

  10. Dry and I use Alba botanica sea plus (the green plastic jar one). Very happy for years. It is thick (maybe meant to be night creme only?) but on my dry skin, it's perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sorry, G---I forgot to mention the CeraVe is water-based, and oil-free (YAY!) ^^

  12. I have oily skin, and I've been liking the Cetaphil Oil Control moisturizer, even though I find that in hot weather, without foundation, my face still turns oily, but between the Cetaphil Moisturizer and the Mario Badescu healing cream, I seem to have kicked the blotchy redness that was plaguing my cheeks.

  13. I have really oily skin and I love Clean & Clear's Dual Action Oil Free moisturiser, or Simple's Rich Moisturiser for when I dry out my skin with too many tea tree products! Haha :)

  14. I have very dry skin, but break out around my forehead, nose, and chin. So that would be combination skin, right? lol I use Aveeno Ultra Calming moisturizer. I like it, but it can feel a bit greasy with the SPF in it. For a night cream, I use Pond's Dry Skin cream, but plan to try the Simple brand night cream. :)

  15. I have extremely dry skin and have been searching for years to find a moisturizer that would work but also affordable. I currently use Lubriderm's daily moisture lotion for sensitive skin. It works wonders(you can tell when I don't use it) and it was only about $3 at Wal-Mart!

  16. I have very Sensitive Combination Skin (oily with some dry spots) and I've been loving the Super by Perricone Moisturizer with SPF. It's pricey for such a small product but I love it and would definitely repurchase. Not too keen on the other products in this line though.

  17. that used to be such an easy question to answer, but i guess nowadays i have combination skin -- super oily in some places, but desert-dry in others.
i have found my personal holy grail moisturizer -- st ives oil-free -- but ALAS! it was discontinued a few years back! i made a point to buy as many bottles as i could afford and still have one or two left, but once those are gone, im stumped as to what to use!

  18. I have oily, sensitive skin and I ADORE the Garnier Moisture Rescue Refresh Gel Cream. It's a light refreshing gel that takes away all my flakies without any residue at all. Like a drink of water for my skin - and looks great under makeup.

    1. Yes the gel cream from garnier is nice esp for summer.

    2. I have *dry* and sensitive skin and that stuff made a dry, peeling mess of my face-- alcohol is the third ingredient after water and glycerin, so be careful if you're not oily!

  19. I have recently changed my skin for the better. I suffered for years from acne prone combination skin that ranged from flaky dry on some areas to so oily you could literally wipe a sheet of oil off just by brushing your fingertips across on others. It was so bad my bangs would be full of oil and stuck to my face by the end of the day. Then I discovered evoo (extra virgin olive oil). Turns out most of the problem was actually dehydration. For several months I not only used it as a cleanser, but applied liberally everyday as my only moisturizer... and it balanced my skin. Not only did is completely solve the flaky dry problem, the oiliness diminished to a controllable level. My skin was overproducing oil as a coping mechanism to deal with the dehydration. It also reduced blackheads and acne by 90%. It also reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The results were amazing. I am almost 40, and have suffered with my skin for most of my life... I have tried pretty much every skin care product on the market and nothing has made such a difference. If I had only known years ago....

Now I still have oily skin, but it is nowhere near as bad as it used to be and all of the flaking is gone. My favorite moisturizer is really a combination of the evoo, which I use as cleanser and remove with a wipe (Huggies natural baby wipes), and follow with Garnier Moisture Rescue gel. I wash my face with actual cleanser and exfoliate only 2-3x a week, so as to not strip the skin, irritate, or dehydrate it.

I highly recommend the Moisture Rescue, it soaks right in, leaves my skin very soft with moisture that lasts for hours, yet is not the slightest bit greasy. It does not break me out, or irritate my eyes. It has a mild, fresh scent and feels absolutely wonderful. A little goes a long way.. and it's not only reasonably priced (about $10-$12) but you can find it on sale or get coupons often.

    1. And, oops! My skin type is normal, leaning dry. I'm very, very blessed to have good skin, but I absolutely need to moisturize if I wash my face, spend more than an hour in the pool, or visit a place like Arizona. My skin likes humidity; my hair does not.

  21. I have dry skin & in combination with prescription medications, my moisturizer is Cerave (the cream, not the lotion).

  22. I have sensitive combination skin with a side order of ROSACEA. I use L'oreal's Youth Code day lotion and a whole slew of other products to tame the beast.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My skin is combo/very oily. As I've aged, the sides of my cheeks have become dry, but I still buy for oily skin.

For a moisturizer, in the morning on days I don't wear makeup, I use Peter Thomas Roth's Uber-Dry Sunscreen. On my skin, it comes off as semi-matte/satin but not oily or greasy until a few hours later. Sephora sells it so anyone can get a sample. On mornings I do wear makeup, I use Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch. I'm more shiny, with Neutrogena, but not as bad as with other sunscreens but makeup goes on top so I don't worry. The SPF 30 has no fragrance but the 50 does.

At night, I've used Olay's Regenerist Regenerating Serum (fragrance-free) which is really good (for drugstore or high-end). Currently I'm using a retinol serum from Paula's Choice which is, unfortunately, only available online. I have used Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream (Night) and it was surprisingly pretty good. Warning though, if you have an dry patches or areas on your face that may be prone to dryness, there's a really good chance that this product will exacerbate it.

Sorry for the long winded comment, but I would say overall, try any of the Olay serums, fragrance-free. I've had nothing but good experiences with them and they're easily accessible.

  24. My skin is combination: oily T-zone, with the rest being a little dry. I will not use anything other than Paula's Choice Moisture Boost Hydrating Treatment Cream. I love this stuff, and have been using it for several years. It has an odd texture; kind of a cross between a gel and a cream. I put a little on my finger tips of both hands and spread it while warming it up. It goes on much better that way. I've never had a break out or clogged pore from it. I've tried other moisturizers, but this is the best I've ever tried, for my skin.

  25. I have pretty combination to oily skin, leaning far more towards oily but I sometimes have some dryness on my cheeks. And this is kind of a hard question. I refuse to go outside with some sort of SPF so most days, if I know I'm not going to use anything else like tinted moisturizer or foundation with SPF, I use the Walmart branded Equate beauty lotions which are supposed to be comparable to the Olay ones. In the winter, I use the normal formula which is a little richer. Most other times, I use the sensitive skin formula. (Granted, I'm talking about San Francisco winters...which are pretty mild.) I'm not sure they're my HG but they're pretty good. I still use primer and powder when I put on makeup to control oil though.

For a plain moisturizer (no SPF), I actually really like Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing GEL. I also use Garnier's Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream. The Clinique and Garnier are pretty similar, outside of price. The Garnier one is scented, which I like, but it also comes in a pot, which I don't like (squeeze bottles/dispensers are much more hygienic).

  26. Im combination in the summer. I like non-spf is Garnier gel cream moistureizer or the Oil of Olay sensitive skin lotion in spf 15.

  27. My skin is pretty dry, sensitive, and acne-prone. Cerave cream, in the tub, is my hg and I don't even want to try anything else. Love it!

  28. I have fairly dry skin, though my T-zone can get a bit oily. I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15. It soaks into my skin pretty quickly, it's very light and doesn't make my makeup slide off. I think it would probably work better for someone with less dry skin, because it wouldn't soak in so quickly. It's non-irritating and has a very, very faint scent from the SPF but I'm very pleased with it. I've been using it for more than a year now and I really like it. Hope you find something that works for you!!

  29. combo. I like using formula 10.0.6 Seriously Shine Free Mattifying Oil Free Moisturizer. Keeps my skin hydrated and helps keep me shine free with bamboo extract (t-zone gets really shiny) at night I use one by st ives firming moisturizer to keep my skin tight on the face, plus it smells awesome

  30. I have serious combo skin, epsecially since I recently started a series of light peels--they make me super dry and peely around my undereyes and corners of the mouth, while the oil continues it's reign of terror on my forehead, nose, and upper eyelids. Also mild rosacea. I use:
-Argan oil and neosporin if I'm flakey
-ROC multi-treatment at night, which is a moderately moisturizing retinol formula.
-CeraVe nighttime if my skin is showing signs of irritation and can't tolerate the retinol.
-Oil of Olay regenerist serum, by itself if I'm oily or under others if I need more moisture.
-Clinique CityBlock 25SPF, the best sunscreen evah! It's the only one I've ever found that doesn't sting my eyes AND doesn't break out my acne-prone skin.
Yes, my husband fears the beauty routine. Paula's Beautypedia is really helpful for finding which formulas are effective and stable and free of irritating ingridients.

  31. My skin is normal but at night I use PTR's glycolic cleanser and my skin gets slightly drier. I just started using L'Oreal Collagen Moisture Filler Day/Night Cream and I absolutely love it. It doesn't irritate my skin (like most things do) and my face doesn't look greasy after. Plus, it's pretty cheap at Ulta for an anti-aging product!

  32. I have annoying combo skin that's sensitive. My holy grail daytime moisturizer with SPF is LaVanila the Healthy Face SPF 40.

  33. I have normal to dry skin. I loving using the Facial Moisturizer from Trader Joe's.

  34. I have combination skin, that definitely leans more oily this time of year, and is very acne-prone. For awhile now I've been using Alpha Hydrox Enhanced Lotion every night, and I think it is helping with my breakouts. During the day I like grapeseed oil mixed with tea tree oil if I'm staying inside, and I recently started using Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby sunblock (spf 60) by itself as a moisturizer during the day when I'm going out. It's great. It seems to be clearing my skin up nicely, and it doesn't irritate my sensitive eyes or leave my face greasy by the end of the day. The only problem with it is that it makes my face sweat for a little while after I put it on. But then I just blot and it stops after that. I have no idea why.

  35. My face is very oily, and is prone to acne. The best thing I've found (that I keep buying) is Olay Regenerating UV Defense lotion. It's spf 15, and it's one of Paula Begoun's (the Cosmetics Cop) recommendations for oily skin. I've also used the Regenerist fragrance-free serum if I'm feeling dry at night, although lately that's been replaced by Neutrogena's 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment, another Paula rec.

The UV lotion tends to leave me shiny, but I put some kaolin clay or silica powder from Coastal Scents on before I do my mineral makeup, and that works pretty well. (I've heard the CS silica powder compared to MUF's HD powder, but it's way cheaper. Have you ever tried it?)

  37. My skin is very dry, and eczema-prone. My HG moisturizer is Ponds Dry Skin Cream. It doesn't irritate my skin at all, and it's really the only one that doesn't leave my skin feeling tight.

  38. I have oily skin and my favorite moisturizer is absolutely Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel Cream. It's the one that comes in a jar, and it is the only moisturizer I've ever used that didn't feel heavy or greasy on my skin, and I've always used oil-free moisturizers! It's also a bit cooling which is nice in the summer.

  40. Hi G! I have sensitive dry combination skin (so oily AND flaky patches) and I loooove Cerave AM. My friend with sensitive dry skin loves it too--but we both don't live in dry areas--I wouldn't recommend it to people who live in dry areas since it has sodium hyaluronate.

Eucerin facial lotion (the one with spf) was nice back when I just had sensitive oily skin.

I have another friend with sensitive oily combination who uses the new Cetaphil oil control facial moisturizer with spf and keeps raving about it.

Everything I have listed comes packaged in pumps and also has spf.

  41. Clinique DDML for years! Acne prone and dry skin! And I take fish oil daily which has helped alot!

  42. I have sensitive dry/normal skin and use CeraVe AM and CeraVe PM and love them both. Before I used to only use night cream in certain areas because I was prone to breakouts but I can slather the PM on all over with no ill effects. Plus my skin is much healthier looking now.

For those looking for something for acne prone skin, Neutrogena makes a product called Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish cream that has retinol and salicylic acid. I used it for a while and it's a really great product. It doesn't dry your skin out like other acne products do and it's for adult skin. Many of the acne formulas out there are made for younger skin so they aren't doing you any favors. If for any reason I had to stop using CeraVe I'd go right back to this product. It can be hard to find, CVS is your best bet. Plus CVS makes their own version which is a couple dollars cheaper.

  44. I have combination skin (and I've been using the clarisonic mia2 for a month and what a huge difference!)

I've been liking the Simple hydrating light moisturizer! it's not heavy at all and doesn't make me break out!

  45. I'm glad you asked this question!! ;A;
I'm also looking for my HG facial moisturizer.

I thought I had normal/combo skin, but it's more like combo-dry skin now.
My skin has been more dry lately. Ugh.

I like using Clinique's Moisture surge extended thirst relief gel cream. The gel texture is so nice, light-weight, and quick-absorbing. Leaves my skin feeling so soft. I haven't broken out from it either. But it's somewhat pricey. I wouldn't like to use it in the day, reserving it for night time instead.

  46. I am looking for one now...Has anybody tried the Aveeno Clear Complexion Moisturizer?

  47. i have combination skin with a lil more oily in the summer. my current HG is CeraVe moisturizing lotion! goes on smooth just like a gel, drys quickly and leaves my skin feeling nice and smooth. I use the highest level of Retin-A and CeraVe helps a lot for the dryness/peeling that retinols can sometimes cause. for SPF i use Clinique city block in SFF 40. LOVE using all three products <3

  48. I have combination skin, my T zone is dry, and after trying all kinds of brands, olay, garnier, avon, anew, Neutrogena, the only ones that work for me and they are very affordable, is CLEAN&CLEAR Finishes pore perfecting moisturizer, and at night, CLEAN&CLEAR Night, Soft oil-free moisturizer, doesn't break me out, it's not greasy and leaves my skin super soft.

  49. I have oily skin and use Garnier's Skin Renew Daily Moisture Lotion with SPF. It's lightweight and oil free plus it has SPF which is a must since I'm fair skinned. It doesn't make me greasy and lightly hydrates plus it absorbs quickly.

  50. I have sensitive dry skin prone to redness and I still get pimples every once in awhile... The best thing I've ever done for my skin is to start using the NARS Body Glow II (the non-shimmery monoi oil) on my face before moisturizing. It makes my skin baby smooth, is gentle, and keeps it clear. It's pricey, but because I use so little, one bottle lasts me more than a year. I also really like Trader Joe's Enrich face lotion for daytime; it's cheap, gentle, feels great on the skin, and has SPF 15. I use The Body Shop's Nutriganics line at night, and I've been very happy with it; I stock up when they run 3 for $30 sales.

  51. I've got combination skin, I really don't break out that often. When I do it's around my chin or my hairline where my hat for work rubs constantly. I use straight aloe vera gel as a moisturizer. Every day after I wash my face I work one pump full of it into my skin. I love the way it makes my skin feel.

    ReplyDelete
  52. combination leaning toward dry right now and dry in the winter and I love Aveeno Smart Essentials SPF 30...which is on clearance 50% off at CVS right now! but that worries me, hope it's not being discontinued

  53. I have dry skin which has improved since I started using Paula's Choice products. I tend to use everything from the Resist and Skin Recovery lines depending on how things are looking that day. My favorite is probably the Resist barrier repair. I used to use Dermalogica and my favorites from that brand were the overnight repair serum and their barrier repair. I actually kind of like this Nutribiotic face cream my sister picked up for me on clearance one day so I use that a lot at night. If I'm putting on makeup in the evening I usually use a Desert Essence moisturizer that you can get from natural foods stores for like five dollars.

  54. i am combo. i am also canadian so i am not sure if my day time holy grail is available in the US, but i use the natural action by OXY oil absorbing lotion. it is AMAZING. i am usually shiny enough to see your reflection in my forehead by mid afternoon, and with this stuff im not shiny but not dry as a bone. it does nothing for diminishing pores so you might still want a primer but it doesn't cause me to break out (and i can do that by just looking at a bottle of irritating products). i will say it has a funky smell (funky-herbal not funky-feet smell) and it has an odd feeling on your skin until you apply makeup. i would not wear this alone as i am not sure how long that feeling would last. i wear powder foundation so it wasnt the added moisture of liquid that changed it. it isnt tight just...it feels like something is off for a minute or two once i apply.

at night i second everyone else's choice of the garnier moisture rescue gel, love that stuff.

  55. For damaged skin, like when I did not put enough sunscreen few months back and was out on the water for days, Physiogel is amazing. It was the only product that helped heal my sun damaged skin and peeling. I definitely reommend for very dry skin.

Currently I have combo skin and I use Shiseido Night Moisture Charge(?) and I am happy. The only other light moisturizer I liked and worked was Avalon Organics Vitamin C serum. They both moisturize and absorb fast and does not feel dry/tight afterwards with no greasy film feeling.
