The Wednesday Question

Let's talk sunscreens today, shall we? I, know, it's not really "fun" or "glamorous" to talk about, but it's probably the most important product you can put on your face. Lately there's been a lot of debate about physical sunscreens (like zinc oxide) vs. chemical sunscreens (like avobenzone). So I'd love to hear from YOU as to what you prefer, and why:

Do you use a physical (otherwise known as mineral) sunscreen or do you prefer chemical sunscreens? And why?

If you'd like to know more about the potential pros and cons of each, here's an article that might help. I cannot vouch for the legitimacy of all of the content in this article, but I think it contains commonly-debated pros and cons for both types of sunscreens so that's why I'm sharing it.

  1. I use a daily moisturizer with SPF in it as well as mineral makeup foundation.

However, when I run, I use Avon's moisturizer that is specifically made with SPF. It is part of the Anew line.

I've been wearing SPF for about 2 decades. I'm trying to make up for all the baking I did when I was in my teens and yearly 20's.

My husband has had skin cancer five times; I don't want to deal with that on my face!

  2. I wear sun sreen everyday... even when its cold and cloudy outside... I used to have loads of sun damage... no cream like sunscreen was able to improve the condition of my skin... In fact, if there is only one cream you would use, you should make it a sunscreen!!!

  3. I use a physical sunscreen because it's generally better for sensitive skin, and I believe it blocks the rays from entering the skin. Chemical sunscreens by absorbing the sun's rays.

  4. Physical sunscreen - every day. In fact, I make my own sunscreen with loads of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in it. Otherwise it's just too difficult to find silicone-free, high spf sunscreen.

I've read the research on chemical sunscreens, and I'm just not convinced they are a good idea. Plus, I will say that I've religiously used sunscreen since I was 18, and with regularity before that (like when I knew I'd be out in the direct sun for many hours), and still developed freckles and spots via sun damage. And I'm not talking about "applying once in the morning and going", I mean applying enough, allowing to "sink in" for 20-30 min. and reapplying every 45 minutes after that if I was in the sun.

First line of defense is always avoiding the times of day when the sun is the harshest, followed by covering my skin with clothing/hats, and never *ever* leave the house without sunscreen (not even for a five minute pop out in the yard) - Physical sunscreen exclusively as of a few years now.

  5. Physical sunscreen all the way! Chemical sunscreens break me out like crazy and the chemicals themselves aren't very safe (of course there is still further research needed to confirm this but better safe than sorry).

  6. I am only able to use physical sunblocks as I am allergic to chemical sunscreen.

  7. I use a physical sunscreen that I love called Burnout Ocean Tested. I can't stand chemical sunscreens. They make me break out and my face burns.
