Review: Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balms SPF20

I've had my eye on Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms for months now, so I was thrilled to receive all six shades for review recently. I have been testing these out for a few weeks and I'd love to share my thoughts with you in case you have yet to try these yourself.

Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm SPF20
(retail: around $3.50 each, 0.15 oz)

According to the Maybelline website, these balms are described as follows:

No more basic lip balm
Lip renew formula and 8-hr hydration for visibly renewed lips in 4 weeks.
Clinical care for baby-soft lips.

There is no denying that the packaging of these lip balms is ADORABLE:

I also appreciate that the sticks fully retract into the tubes:

It's hard to tell from my pics, but one of the shades, Peach Kiss, has some shimmer to it. The rest of the shades do not contain any shimmer.

Pigmentation: These are not heavily-pigmented lip balms in the vein of Revlon Lip Butters. These are more like traditional tinted lip balms that deliver a sheer wash of color to the lips. On my lips, the two most pigmented shades are Peach Kiss and Pink Punch. Peach Kiss is a shimmery nude that borders on frosty. Pink Punch is a cool-toned pink that is big on color and, on my lips, almost appears as an orchid pink rather than a bubblegum pink. It's much more lovely on the lips than I expected. Both Quenched and Peppermint are clear. Grape Vine is a purple-ish wine shade and Cherry Me, the one I was expecting to love the most, is a warm pink that doesn't quite look like the sheer cherry red I was hoping it would be. With the exception of Peach Kiss, which is shimmery/frosty and more on the opaque side, these balms are sheer and  do not contain any shimmer.

Texture: These balms glide on the lips pretty effortlessly. The consistency is not heavy, thick or waxy; they are thinner balms that feel slick on the lips yet they do not feel greasy.  I've heard a few people say that they thought these balms just "sat" on their lips without actually penetrating. I can understand how someone might feel that way, especially if they did not apply a generous amount. If you tend to be delicate with application, I'm not sure if you would feel a significant amount of protection or moisturization from these lip balms. However, I tend to be a bit more heavy-handed with my lip balms and perhaps because of that, they tend to coat my lips and provide some nice protection and moisturization for me personally. I have not been using these products for four weeks (the amount of time Maybelline states will provide visible results) so I can't comment on that. However, I can comment that the "8-hr hydration" is more like 3-4 hours for me. After about three hours, I do feel the need to reapply this product.

Flavor/fragrance: All in all, I think these balms have a nice, soft fragrance to them, and the flavor level tends to vary from shade to shade (some have stronger flavors than others). For the most part, the flavor and fragrance match the name of each shade (Pink Punch smells and tastes like pink punch, and so forth), however Quenched (one of the clear shades) is a bit different and it's actually my favorite of the bunch (in terms of flavor and fragrance). If you remember my original post about Baby Lips last summer, then you might recall that Elle.com first broke the news about this collection in their Big Reveal. At that time, they said that one of the flavors would be Lemon Basil. Well I didn't equate the name "Quenched" with lemon basil at first, but after using it I quickly discovered the wonderful lemon note to this balm. While I can't quite pick out the basil note, I do detect a tiny bit of earthiness to both the fragrance and flavor, and the combination is absolutely wonderful to me.

FINAL VERDICT: While I don't think these lip balms are revolutionary, I do think they have some nice things going for them. The packaging is adorable, the fragrances and flavors are soft yet fun, and Pink Punch in particular delivers some very nice pigmentation. If you're looking for a lovely lemon-scented balm, I would check out Quenched for sure. I think these balms feel nice and light on the lips, deliver a lovely wash of color and they also provide some nice moisturization and protection for me personally (and I REALLY love that they're SPF20). I also appreciate that they're paraben-free and contain shea butter. For around $3, I think they're a fun new addition to the beauty aisle.

Do you already own any Baby Lips lip balms? If so, what shades do you own and how do you like them?

  1. I got Grape Vine free with my ULTA reward point. Really disappointed with this product. The sheer color is perfect for my lips but it is the most dehydrating product I have ever used. It looks pretty but it just sits on the lips with providing any moisture whatsoever. Once it evaporates my lips feel like sandpaper! Such a shame.

  2. Andra: I'm sorry to hear these didn't work for you. I actually mentioned in this review that I had heard a few people say that the product just "sat" on their lips, but I would love to know how much of it you used during application. After a few weeks of using these, I've found that the more I apply, the better the hydration and protection. So if you are more delicate with your application, I'm wondering if applying a bit more would help? Just a thought!

  3. When they first came out I bought Peppermint and I think it is fine. I use it alot under lipsticks. Next time I buy one and I do like them enough to repurchase I am going to try a tinted color. I too only get a couple of hours of moisture.

  4. robin: Thank you so much for the reminder--I totally forgot to mention that these are nice to layer underneath drier lipsticks or to use as a base when you fill in your lips with lipliner. Thanks so much for mentioning that, and I'm glad they seem to work for you. :)

  5. I've considered picking up one of those to try to replace my Hard Candy World Balmination. I do like that they are completely retractable, unlike my World Balmination. That actually made me angry when I discovered that since I am prone to breaking sticks.

I really like the color range, something that the Hard Candy line lacks. I'll have to grab one during my next shopping trip and give it a whirl.

  6. I have Grapevine and I like the product..I am a dry lip person so this really works for me. What I don't like is the cheap packaging, not sturdy or sleek. Seems like I I drop it good enough it will just break open. All in all it does the job. I can't compare it to Revlon Lip Butters yet because I haven't gone to get any yet. I shall see.

  7. I have Peach Kiss, Peppermint, Quenched, and Pink Punch. I dislike the flavor/scent of Peach Kiss and Pink Punch, but I love love love Peppermint. I normally hate peppermint scents and flavors, but this one is soft and subtle. I also love Quenched.

  8. I forgot to add that I find these lip balms amazingly moisturizing for me! I have never used a better lip balm.

  9. I was really excited about trying these, so I got all of them. They dried my lips out and I found myself reaching for my other lip balms. (I did try them for a little over a month to give them the benefit of the doubt) Pink punch was the first to go. I'm also a bit heavy handed with my balms, but wasn't expecting the in your face pink that resulted. I really wanted to love them, but it just wasn't meant to be. :(

  10. I got Quenched when it first came out - I really liked the scent and texture, but on me, it didn't last long at all (1-2 hours and I was reapplying). That's not a dealbreaker for me, though, and I did like the balm.

So did my mom, who found it after I left it at her house and commandeered it as her own. I think she's used more of it than I did - I should ask her for her thoughts.

  11. I want to try peach kiss and pink punch so badly! My lips are really pigmented though so I'm not sure whether the colours will even show up =/

  14. I have one in Peach Kiss and really enjoy it - especially on days when I don't wear any makeup - it's a nice bit of color and I agree that the wear time is about 3-4 hours. The packaging is definitely adorable and the bright colors make it easy for me to find it in my purse.

  15. i got the cherry one for no reason other than i had a coupon and i like subtle red lips. i was excited until i used it. i mean its okay, but it smells like cherry CHAPSTICK (the brand) and it made it less great to me. i think maybe if i got a different kind i'd be happy with it. perhaps peach or peppermint... :)

  16. I own 5 out of the 6 Baby Lips offered (I'm not a fan of peppermint flavors). I really enjoy the pigmentation and moisture they give. They work pretty well for me. Quenched is my favorite to use as a daily lip balm. I keep one in my purse at all times. I love it so much, I even bought a couple back ups just in case! ;D

  17. I found these drying as well. Also I tend to prefer waxier balms. Still you can't doubt the adorable factor.

  18. I have the Pink Punch one and I really like it, i find it very moisturizing.

  19. I have the pink punch and I love it! I like that it is SPF 20 and the color looks nice on me. But sometimes I do think that they could be a bit more moisturizing. But for the money I like them!

  20. I have peach kiss (That's what it's called, I think) and it sits on my lips boringly unless I put some Vaseline or a chapstick on before. I like the color, but it doesn't do anything else.

  21. I've been eyeing these since the summer. I have soooo many lip balms & butters already, that I feel almost like there isn't enough about this product that makes me have to have it, ya know?
The packaging is adorable. That is what drew me to them in the first place. Hehe

  22. This was my most epic fail product of the year. These made my lips so dry they cracked and were bleeding.

  23. I haven't tried these...but I did just get one of those Revlon lip butters the other day and I am in LOVE with it! Awesome stuff!

  24. Cherry Me looks so cute! I'm hoping they'll eventually make their way to Belgium!

  25. I used up my whole tube of Grape vine, I love this stuff! I'm definitely going to buy another.

  26. I was thinking the same, florence. I have too many balms already and this seems to be just another balm in cute packaging. Maybe if there is a good sale/coupon I'll buy one anyway.

  27. I got one of these in Pink Punch recently and I'm loving it! I think this is the best tinted lip balm I've used. However, I haven't tried the Revlon lip butters. Saw them today but decided not to get them yet. I need to try them soon though!

  28. I am in love with the Pink Punch one... why oh why isn't it available here in Ireland?? That is just unfair...

  29. I'm an avid chapstick user...some call me an addict! I keep one in my car and specific places in my house so it's handy and then I have like 4 diff kinds I like that I keel in my purse..OCD much? Lol
Well I was SO excited to try these I asked hubby to put it in my stocking. After he couldn't find them anywhere I did a little hunting on my own and found them. I got pink punch and peppermint. I LOVE the color of the pink punch that it gives..soft tint of pink that's perfect for brightening me up when I'm not wearing makeup (we have a 3month old so I'm busy!) I've tried this for one week barely and I already notice a huge difference in my lips IN A BAD WAY. my lips were fine before and now they are very dry and cracked which never happens, so I feel like it is this product so I'm very disappointed because I want to like them. I've been in denial and keep using them but it's still making them worse. Unfortunately I'm done with them. I wish they would have worked. And yes I was TOTALLY sold by the packaging, it's cute, girly and flashy!
I give two thumbs down :(

  30. I have the Energizing Orange, and it's in the packaging that looks like a Chapstick one.. I dunno about that, but I like it. :)

  31. I purchased today the Peach Kiss and the Grape Vine. I like the both of them but I am not experiencing the tint of color that some have professed to love. They are not greasy and are SPF20 so I do enjoy them. I have to reapply all lip balm/gloss or chapstick that I wear so I knew better than to believe in 8 hour moisturization. None the less I am very pleased with the product. I intend to purchase the Peppermint & Quenched flavors.

  32. I finally got my hands on these! I only have two peppermint and cherry me, but I love them! I have only had them for about a week now, and I have to say at least my lips aren't chapped anymore!!

  33. I just picked up the pink a week or so ago and it goes on nice and smooth an adds a bit of color but i found it dried out my lips after using for a week. They ended up dry and cracked...which they weren't when I started. I'll stick to my blistex for lip balm!

  34. The quenched one is the most hydrating and my fav!!!I'm thinking since it's clear ,ill assume peppemint is too since it's clear I dnt have it but I do have pink punch its the only other one I can stand I have bad sinuses so if it smells bad I will not use it LOL they work for me spf 20 i love it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have quenched love it and I just bought pink punch I didn't know these were tinted but I like pink punch a lot

  36. I just used pink punch and loved it so I came to check out the reviews thinking everyone else would be as excited as I am. But now I am a little wary of my lips drying out MORE by the end of the week. My lips are normally pretty dry and this feels so silky, not thick or gunky, and I LOVE the colour tint and spf.

  37. I have the maybelline baby lips in pink punch and I really like it. I have been considering getting either the quenched or cherry me, and I thought the electro collection was super bright looking and who ever heard of yellow or green lips??? But then I looked it up and saw the swatches and found the yellow and green are pretty much almost clear and the strike a rose, pink shock, oh orange and grapevine went on more natural looking than I thought! Now I want all of them to bring to school!

  38. Been using for two months. . . Worked great at first, but.now my lips hurt, they are dryer than ever, sooo red, and feel like their almost wind burned. This product worked great, I used it everyday, now I will never buy another one. Stick with the carmex ladies! They may not be in pretty bottles, smell great, or make a tint on your lips but I want beautiful lips regardless of what it is. Hope this helps..

  39. I LOVE quenched! The first time I smelled the scent, I didn't think "ooh! That's a lemon scent!" instead, I thought of Trix the cereal lol(its also my favorite cereal) I bought the lipbalm about, almost 2weeks ago when I was in desperate need for some lipbalm because my lips were so dry, and cracked that it hurt :( But when I used quenched, it healed up my lips within a few days :) This product is quite amazing, and I'm planning to keep buying their lipbalms! And a comment for how long the hydration last, as for me, it also last 3-4hours. So I always have to keep reapplying. All in all, its a fantastic product in my opinion <3
