The Wednesday Question

Another week has flown by and it's time once again for The Wednesday Question! I'm very excited to see your responses to this one:

When it comes to drugstore makeup, how important is packaging?

Are you the type of person who doesn't mind a flimsy package as long as the product inside is of good quality, or does quality packaging make or break your purchase? My answer: flimsy or unattractive packaging doesn't necessarily deter me from a purchase, HOWEVER, if the packaging is amazing, I might consider a purchase even if I haven't heard good things about the product itself (sad, but true). What about you?

  1. while flashy packaging might catch my eye, i actually prefer minimal packaging -- aka, minimal waste.
at the same time, if the packaging looks too juvenile, i may be turned off of an otherwise fabulous product, simply because it seems to be beckoning to a younger age group.

  2. Packaging is EVERYTHING to me when it comes to drugstore makeup! That is why I prefer high- end because the packaging is always better. The drugstore prodict might be just as good, it is the packaging that bothers me:)

  3. It really depends on the products. For something that will last a long time, I really like better quality packaging, and attractive packaging. For something like mascara or clear gloss that is used very quickly, it really doesn't matter that much.

  4. I think previously I would of said it didn't matter. However, you asked a few weeks ago a question along the lines about what drugstore brand could use a revamp or makeover, and I said NYC basically because of their not so great packing.

If someone recommends a drugstore product that has not so great packaging. I will buy it, packaging doesn't matter. If I'm just shopping around looking for new products, a product that has flimsy packaging I'm more likely to pass up on over maybe a pricier drugstore item that has nicer packaging. I guess I'm still stuck in the mindset when bad packaging really did equate to a not so great product. I need to be more opened minded!

    Good question!

  5. The more money I spend on an item, the more solid I want the packaging to be. That's pretty much my only guideline. I have three cats, a dog, and... well, I've been known to be a bit clumsy myself. If it's easy and cheap to replace, I'm not worried.

  6. Packaging is a nice perk, but in the end, it doesn't really matter to me. If I'm buying a product it's because it's the right shade or formulation. I buy a lot of my products based on blog reviews and recommendations and the important thing is that it works. I love it when a good product has pretty packaging, but I don't hate it when a good product doesn't have pretty packaging.

  7. Packaging has never been super important to me. As long as it is functionally (i.e. doesn't break and is conducive to application), then I really don't care. That being said, I agree that I dislike packaging that is wasteful or unnecessarily bulky. I'm trying to save the planet here!

  8. On the whole I don't expect awesome packaging from drugstore MU. Obviously the more expensive a packing is, the more the product price goes up. So I am fine with simple, no-fuss packing from drugstores brand. Super tacky packing however turns me off though.

  9. packaging that is well made is important to me. i'm clumsy and my makeup is....disorganized in purses, boxes, etc. so i need something that will stand up to my abuse. however, i prefer minimal waste, minimal fuss, and as small as possible so that it fits where i need to put it. i want to feel like my money was spent on product, not its package.

  10. If the packaging is good enough, I might buy it for that. I tried the Wet n Wild mineral foundation and hated it, but the jar it came in is great for travel - I got rid of the brush and keep a nice soft baby buki in there.

  11. Packaging isn't important to me. I dislike bulky, gaudy, and excessively heavy packaging. I don't carry makeup products around with me; they usually sit on my vanity at home, so basically the only person who'll ever see the packaging is me. I don't really care about the aesthetics as long as the product inside works. If I'm going to pay more for an item, I want that higher cost to be reflected in the product formula and quality of ingredients, not the packaging which is disposable and will eventually end up in the trash.

  12. Mimsy put it really well. For me, the product is what I'm paying for, and packaging usually comes a distant second. I rarely carry products with me, so that kind of durability doesn't factor, but there have been things I wouldn't buy because of bulky or inefficient packaging (looking at you, UDPP--thank goodness you're in a squeeze tube now).

I'm also thinking about getting a Z Palette so I can condense my collection a bit, which really makes packaging a minor concern.

  13. I'm with EvaNadine and the rest who prefer minimal waste/packaging. But I don't think that's what you are talking about, you mean the necessary tubes, bottles, cases, etc. and not an extra box to hold those, right?

I think it's important to have a sturdy package if it's something that will be in my handbag or traveling, but I won't worry too much if it's a bit flimsy and staying at home.

I also like when a brand goes the extra mile with pretty or chic packaging, just knowing that makeup may be displayed on a dresser or counter. So Milani really should do something about their ugly retro 70s packaging...Borghese too. But since I do like their products, I'll continue to buy, but leave it in a drawer or train case.

I also think that more thought should go into functionality of packaging when a product like foundation or moisturizer doesn't come in a squeeze tube or with a pump. Jars and open necked bottles are unsanitary and let the product dry out too fast.

The same goes for the functionality of a brush or other tool to apply the product, don't just add in one that is so useless and scratchy you know it will get tossed. Either give us a decent quality brush or nothing and let us use our own. A lot of times they add a crap blush brush that just makes the packaging bulky. I'd rather forgo their crap brush and have a sleek case or a case that's bulky because I'm getting more product!

Lastly...wooo this is getting long. I guess you hit a nerve with me, G! I hate when a company tricks you with a big box only to have a little bottle or tube of product inside!

  15. I have to agree with StardustStephanie. My does go to the packaging. I don't always buy it but I'm enticed. If I can refrain, I'll wait til I get home and check out some blocks (like right here!) and get some reviews. I think I've been disappointed too many times by the packaging only to find out the product sucks.
Blog reviews and friends' advise trump packaging.

  16. Packaging isn't important to me unless I can't really see the product color clearly. If the packaging is attractive but I've heard bad things I stay away.

  17. If you care that much about packaging, you have some issues. As long as it's not flimsy WHO CARES!?!? If the product sucks I'm not buying it. I don't care about the bells and whistles.

  18. Function over form for me, I'm a practical sort, when it comes to spending money.
I do have an aesthetic eye (obviously.. why else would I care about makeup), and pleasant packaging is a bonus.
More important though is that it's (space) efficient and effective.
