My blog is The Worst Beauty Blog Ever!

I received an interesting comment today on the "My Dance with the CVS scanner" post I wrote recently, and I really wanted to share it with you:

Anonymous said...

I think that you have never worked in retail, otherwise you wouldn't criticize the hourly workers who are paid a pittance to label each and every product in the beauty department while dealing with picky, demanding scavengers like yourself. The employees are not LAGGING, as you say. They are overworked, underpaid, and probably had no one in the store to affix the stickers because the register had to be manned at the front of the store to ring up beauty looters like yourself. SO before you criticize "lagging" CVS employees, remember that most make minimum wage and have to support families in a recession on $8 bucks an hour, all so you can get tingly about your "score."

In addition, the clearance items are DISCONTINUED to make room for the new items, so why stock up on items that will never again be available?

I am sure you will be one of those rude customers who shouts at the hapless cashier for the inaccurate register scan. Yet you relish low prices in a drugstore for your own selfish means.

Worst beauty blog I have ever read.

I'd like to take this opportunity to respond to this anonymous blogger. Many of you are probably going to say, "Why bother?" or "Just delete posts like that" but I am all for free speech, and if you've got something negative to say here, I'm MORE than willing to give you a thoughtful response.

So here I go, dear Anonymous commenter:

First of all, when I said that CVS employees may be "lagging" when it comes to affixing stickers to the clearance products, I never meant for anyone to interpret that negatively. I lag on doing important tasks on a daily basis, and I also understand that when someone "lags" on a task, it doesn't mean that they don't have very good reasons which cause them to "lag". You're painting a picture that is just not true. I don't think the CVS employees are sitting around doing nothing when they could be affixing clearance stickers to products. I clearly understand that they have other things that need to be done, so when I said "lag" I simply meant that they have not gotten to this task yet.

I take personal offense to the fact that you think I am a "picky" "scavenger" who has no empathy or sympathy for hardworking, underpaid employees. Several members of my family are the hardworking, underpaid employees of which you speak. And I also think it's quite an assumption to make on your part to assume I have no experience in retail, or that I may come from a privileged background and don't know what it's like to work hard for your paycheck. I've worked many a retail job in my life and if you were to ask ANYONE who knows me, you'd know that I have more empathy than a lot of people out there when it comes to people who work hard at jobs that earn them little to no recognition monetarily or otherwise.

Just the other day, at CVS, I asked a gentleman to get off his cell phone while paying for his purchases because it was hard for the cashier to speak to him. After that gentleman left, I told the cashier that he had the patience of a saint, and that I really wished people remembered that he was a human being who is performing a SERVICE for YOU. No matter what your job, nobody deserves to be treated like a robot. I get upset on a daily basis when I see the utter lack of respect that people give their friendly Starbucks employees, gas station attendants, grocery store cashiers, etc. It truly makes me sick. We are all human and everyone deserves to be treated with respect and decency, regardless of occupation or social standing. Period. End of story.

And because I am NOT rich (not even close), what's so bad about getting, as you call it, "tingly" at scoring a bargain? Honestly, I would really like to know what you find offensive about that! Should I demand to pay full price for everything? If you were looking for a beauty blog that only talks about high-end products, then you really did come to the wrong place. I will continue to get "tingly" about scoring bargains forever, precisely because I was one of the people you mentioned in your comment. And when I get that tingly feeling, it is NEVER at the expense of others. In fact, the entire reason I started this blog was because I want hard-working women out there to get that tingly feeling right alongside me. I'm trying to HELP people who don't have a lot of money (myself certainly included), which is something you obviously missed while perusing Nouveau Cheap.

Regarding your statement about the products on clearance at CVS being discontinued, WE ALL KNOW THAT. Which is precisely why we want to STOCK UP! If you love something and you know you'll never be able to find it again, doesn't it make sense to buy a few so that you can enjoy the product for as long as possible?

As for you declaring that this is the "worst beauty blog you have ever read", well you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Believe me, I realize that Nouveau Cheap is not for everyone, but that's the great thing about the internet. If beauty on a budget is not your cup of tea, there are a million different blogs out there to suit your needs.

But one thing I really want to stress is that, for someone who tries to come across as compassionate for the hard-working person, you seem very full of anger and bitterness, which you have directed toward me. It's ironic that you've chosen me to unleash on, given my background, understanding and the deep respect that I have, and have always had, for the people who are stuggling to stay afloat by working honest jobs for low wages. Man, if you only knew...

I'm tired of even attempting to try and defend myself here, so I'll stop now because I highly doubt you will even read this. But if you do, I welcome your response.

Sincerely,
The Recessionista

PS: And how dare you call me a "beauty looter"! I have never looted anything in my life. Sure, I'm guilty of digging through bargain bins to find good deals, but I PAY for those deals with my hard-earned money.

  1. I'm confused as to why that reader took your light-hearted post so seriously. You can't please everyone and there are people out there who seek out drama, things to argue about, or something to be offended by.

I understand we all get told "don't worry about what one person thinks" etc, but we are human and of course it gets to us. It's easier said than done, your response is good, but someone who was rude like that probably isn't interested in it. I'm like you though, and would of spent the same amount of time replying. I hate when people get the wrong impression!

That aside. I love your blog! I used to be someone who mainly bought high-end products, naively assuming drugstore brands couldn't compare. However, in the last year I have replaced probably 80% of my cosmetics collection with drugstore brands thanks to your blog! I enjoy being able to spend less money on makeup while still getting beautiful results. So thank you!

  2. That's mean to call you a "lotter' when you are just taking advantage of a sale...but then again, there are all sorts of people on the net...

Anyway, I did go ahead and scan one of the Milani palette without the sticker (but I saw it on your haul post)it turned out to be on sale as well, I am totally happy about that. (The only problem I have is getting rid of the God damned CVS sticker...)

  3. Keep your head up! There's nothing wrong with smart shopping and getting the lowest price possible. Why pay more, if you don't have too? Clearly the ANON is BITTER. If you don't like your job, learn a new skill set and get a new one.

  4. Stardust Stephanie: Thanks SO much for your comment. I totally agree--there are people out there who are just looking for drama.

And please don't get me wrong--I'm willing to bet my entire makeup stash that he/she will never even see my response. That's actually not even why I wrote it. lol.

The reason I wrote this response is really because I find his/her comments so incredibly IRONIC. To direct something like that to ME, of all people, is just preposterous and I couldn't NOT explain why. S/he really picked the wrong person to attack in such a way, because I'm literally the polar opposite type of person than s/he thinks I am. That's what's almost laughable about this. :)

Also, sometimes I feel that deleting a bad comment is almost the easy way out. If even ONE of you, my readers, saw that comment and wondered why I didn't respond, it would drive me bonkers. Does that make any sense? lol.

And thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your kind words about my blog. The fact that I can help save you money, and still get beautiful results, makes me grin from ear to ear! I'm thrilled to pieces that I could help!!! :D xo

    ReplyDelete
  5. Citrine: Thanks so much for your comment. :) And I'm THRILLED that you were able to get the sale price on that product even though there was no green sticker. Yay!! And I hear you--those CVS stickers just will not budge. lol.

Lisa: Thanks for your words of encouragement. Sometimes, as might be the case with this anon commenter, it's not easy to find a job you like (or any job at all in this recession, believe me, I know). So I understand that emotions run high when you have to put food on the table and work a job you hate just to survive. But hopefully when the recession turns around, many of us can get additional training or move on to bigger and better things. The point though, is that I empathize completely with anyone who has to work hard for a small paycheck. So his/her comment just could NOT be farther from the truth in terms of the type of person I am. Does that make sense? Anyway, thanks for the comment! :)

  6. "The fact that I can help save you money, and still get beautiful results, makes me grin from ear to ear!" I totally agree! I'm a new reader, and I was hyper excited when I found your blog. I live in Finland though, so we don't have all the same products here, but your posts are really interesting anyway. I'm a student who doesn't have a part-time job, and I sure wouldn't be able to afford any makeup if I didn't know about mineral makeup or the fact that there are online shops selling brands like NYX.

So, thank you for this blog! It's a great read! :)

  7. Wow im so shocked by that person's comment. I work part time in a retail store and, I did not even take offense to anything you said. The word lagging to me is not negative. It means staying behind or slow. CVS was lagging on putting the stickers on the stuff and even one of their employees told me that she doesnt feel like putting the stickers anymore coz it was a lot hen she laughed.

This person clearly does not read your blog on a regular basis and he/she does not know how your blog works.

Oh well, Im glad you did a post about this and thanks for being sincere :)

  8. Hi!

You know, as much as I respect and encourage speaking your mind, sometimes it just isn't required, much like that rude comment you recieved on your post. But I am so glad that you handled it so well, with dignity, too! You set a very good example ;D

I think I'll take the time now to say how much I love, love, love your blog! I read a lot of beauty blogs and yours has been my favorite out of all of them. I love that you have the Beauty On A Budget theme, because most beauty blogs I read review the expensive brands, like MAC and Urban Decay, etc., which is fine, but I can't afford those, y'know? So it's nice to read your opinions on makeup brands that I CAN afford! You also have such a wonderful attitude, which makes reading your posts very fun! It is also wonderful how you engage with your readers by replying to our comments! You and your blog are awesome!

    *hug* LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  9. lmao, thanks for bringing the epic lulz. Economics fail.

What kills me is the whole idea of you scoring bargains = selfish behavior.

It's that behavior that supports our capitalist economy!! So by all means, whether someone has $2 or $200 to spend on makeup, PLEASE SPEND IT. Your country is counting on you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. That wasn't nice of her/him to make baseless judgments of you. Anyways, I can totally relate with your post on cvs, I mean who wouldn't do that? Everyone loves a bargain, rite? Your blog is one of the best that I have ever read and nothing will change that, no matter what people say.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow, someone's got too much time on their hands [ANON, this means YOU]!

Recess, I totally understand your reason(s) why you felt the need to respond to such outrageous accusations [you, me, totally cut from the same cloth - we care what other people think, prolly a little too much, eh? I feel yer pain, chickiepoo], and you did an excellent job of making your point while staying civil and polite the whole time:-)
Aside from finding them myself, I'm always thrilled to hear about someone finding goodies for little pocketmoney...and YOU share the good fortune with everyone - how is that being greedy??? *rolls eyes*

outstanding blog, LOVE it, LOVE Recessionista! *huggles*

  12. I just started to follow your blog, and I, in no way read that blog post in a negative way. You were merely stating your great finds so other people, like myself, can take advantage of these deals. I work in retail and understand what that person is saying BUT i think they may have interpreted your post in a wrong way.

Kudos to your blog and thank you for all the great reviews, and advice you have given me!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I really enjoy reading your blog. I think it is one of the best out there. Some people just don't know how to be nice. =)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Wow, that was a rude comment from whoever it was. But it seems that there is a "posting negative comments everywhere" in the blogsphere. Another blogger which I also read (focusing more on european Limted Editions and bargains) got stalked and threatened by an anonymous person...
When things like that happens it's really sad...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love to hear about deals and therefore I LOVE your blog! It always surprises me that people even bother to leave negative comments. Why even bother?

I know everyone has said this before, but I really hope you don't let this rude commenter ruin this! Please continue to blog about the great, inexpensive items you find!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. that's the silliest thing ever! You meant no harm in that post! I LOVE, LOVE your blog because you are one of the very few out there who tell us about good deals and personally you make me feel better because I can get a dupe for something high end and not feel bad about paying a ton of $. I wish that person had the guts to NOT do an anonymous post. That fact alone, doesn't merit the time you put in the response, but I am glad you did respond. That person is probably hurting and very bitter. I will pray for them, but please keep doing what you do. Plenty of people love your blog! Blessings!

    ReplyDelete
  17. You already know this, because I say it all the time. I just love your blog. No matter how much money you have, being frugal and thrifty are GOOD character traits. Occasionally I think about the time it must require to do the scouting and writing that you do - all for our FREE benefit (!!!!) and marvel.

ANON: I am opinionated and outspoken as well. Furthermore, I value those opinions enough that I want full credit for them, and sign my name to them. I therefore consider anonymous venomous opinions to be less valuable than my time that it took to read them. BooHissssss to you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow- That anon commenter had some serious anger and self-esteem issues that had nothing to do with your blog. They seem to be displacing some ire at your expense. Kudos to you for even responding! I agree with all the other comments here. Your blog is fun, informative and has saved me a bundle.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I usually read all the coms and yet I definitely missed that one! It boggles my mind that someone could be so venomous when you obviously are a caring person who enjoys sharing good things with others. Wow. Anyways, your response was very polite (and oh-so-ironic); I kinda hope the Anonymess sees it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Screw them! I for one have worked in Retail and know first hand that people do lag. That is a fact. My main CVS placed stickers on EVERY item on clearance and hung up signs. The other CVS placed stickers over the product label on SOME items and didn't bother to do the rest. They just hung up the sale signs, but who would know what was on clearance just by those signs? You could clearly see they begin labelling items, but then stopped. There is a such thing has "lagging" when it comes to work & it shows when you go to a store.

And IT DOES make sense to load up on Discontinued products. I mean HELLOOOOOOO that's the whole point isn't it?

Don't fret, that person is obviously is speaking from someone who hates their job. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I am quite surprised by Anon's comment. He or she must not read your blog on a regular basis, or Anon would not have misinterpreted your comments so badly.

I agree with the others that trying to score a great deal does not make a bad person. These are tough times and many people have to take advantage of coupons, sales and clearances. I'm sure that most of Nouveau Cheap's readers do the same. I'm sure that most of us do not just rummage through the shelves throwing things back wherever. As long as we are respectful of our fellow shoppers and the store employees there's nothing wrong with that.

I also don't see how stocking up on a discontinued item is a personality flaw. I know a lot of people do this. Isn't it better to hit your local stores and give them the sales than try and score it on eBay paying more than the product is worth?

I really enjoy the content and tone of your blog!! I feel that you represent a lot of us makeup lovers who want to look our best while staying on a budget. I wouldn't read your blog if you were like Anon described.

    ReplyDelete
  22. R, very well said. I think this brings lots of love from your readers to the surface. You are loved, dear!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I will never understand why some people twist stuff someone says around so they can get mad about it. That said, I love your blog, and it is the only one I have ever been so addicted to. My little sister steals my computer sometimes so she can read your posts, because for some reason her old piece of crap computer won't let her run the site. She is even dead set on buying a few things you've reccommended, I don't remember any specifics, but it's kind of funny. Anyway, I think it's good you responded to the commenter, and I'm glad you didn't take it as personally as you could have.
P.S. I get "tingly" over my scores too! lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't see Anon's comments as ironic, just stupid and mean, beyond irony. Most clerks at CVS that I meet are nice and helpful. Anon is probably lazy and gets chewed out for it by his boss, and then takes his anger out on you. There are always those types around. I was visualizing Anon angrily typing his comment to you in a corner at CVS on the job, while shirking his duties. He seems to be mad that there are customers trying to buy stuff at the store. Um, yeah, there are.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Goodness me what a stupid comment. (anonymous' i mean, not your reply :P). I didn't see anything remotely insulting in your post, just saying 'hey if there arent stickers use the scanning thing to check' which seemed perfectly sensible to me! And seeing as the whole point of your blog is beauty on a budget it's justr mental to assume you are really rich and spoilt as she implied. Hope it didn't upset you at all and your response was really sensible and fair considering how ignorant and stupid the comment was. x

    ReplyDelete
  26. I happen to get "tingly" when I find bargains too! Mainly because I AM one of those hardworking people and anything I can find on clearance saves me money and I am grateful for it. I also love this blog, and it has helped me find countless bargains. I think that was someone just looking to cause some drama. If you hate this blog so much, then why read it? As for me, I'll continue to read it, continue to bargain shop, and continue to get all tingly when I find a great bargain on a beauty product!

    ReplyDelete
  27. oh dont worry about what that person said that person is just jealous they get paid minimum wage and if the person does not like your blog and wrote that nasty comment about the workers just find a new job if you dont like working at CVS thats all i have to say, some people are just haters let them keep on hatting lol
And Dont let that one rude comment ruin your day.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Recessionista, I enjoy your blog very much! It never ceases to amaze me the IDIOTIC comments that these "anonymous" characters leave on blogs. They are cowards! It takes a lot of hard work to maintain a blog. These faceless buzzards haven't anything better to do w/ their time than criticize. They haven't an ounce of creativity in their bodies & are miserable inside, that is why they have to tear down other people's hard work. It is so foolish. They tend to look worse by their ridiculous comments. I got such a comment from a person who OBVIOUSLY was not a regular reader & did not appreciate my blog. I simply posted that LA Colors was releasing a Mineral Blush & included the link. This was to let my readers know such a product existed. The ANON post went a lil' something like this..."
oh wow, all you did was copy & paste, this was not helpful @ all. i was looking for a review. by the look of some of your pics you need to invest in a blending brush b/c you have some really harsh lines". DUH, were it a review, I would have stated that, & the people who found it helpful would have read it without a problem. It's called GOOGLE. Search "review". LOL I have an idea that the ANON poster is a FORMER associate who was bitter b/c our friendship did not go the way she wanted to b/c she had no life. Like I said, pathetic loser w/ nothing better to do w/ their x. LOL I'd love just once for one of these "experts" to post their photo so we could see what kind of content they have on their beauty blog. LOL It is foolish to reply to a matter b4 hearing it completely, so the Bible says. Jumping to conclusions is DUMB! Keep up the good work w/ your blog & don't let the foolish hearted get you down.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I meant Negative ANON commenters, not the faithful. :O)

  30. i shop at CVS and alot of the times the workers there give you dirty looks when you go into the beauty isles. dont let that comment from some moron bother you.
I was at cvs last week and got some sale items 75% off and the lady forgot to ring it up and some revlon items. I told her the some items were bogo and she had the manager go look and manager told her to ring it up as bogo 50% its suppose to be bogo free. I said no please ring it up as what the sign says. anyways these are young girls working at cvs and the girl or person who left you a comment must be young and naive and immature

very immature who does not like minimum wage amount. and not live CVS benefits so to this person who wrote that nasty comment please please stop acting like a selfish immature brat and grow up. And go work at rite aid or walgreens if your UNHAPPY at CVS you probley do the same beauty searching at other stores to and your a lotter yourself. dont call other people Looters when you dont know what your talking about

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hun, I'm so pissed for you...since when are bargain hunters looters?! I seriously don't even know what to say to this anonymous commenter!

Also, I am in complete agreement, people have no common courtesy anymore, it's ridiculous, I try to be as nice as I can to anyone (except for the Tiffany & Co workers that give me the stink eye, lol and maybe Metro workers...they treat EVERYONE like idiots)! Regardless, I too have worked in retail and it aint easy honey! In fact, I was a store manager! I had customers ask me to call them when specific things fell off the deck or went disco and below a certain price, then they'd ask for a bulk discount, I had NO problem offloading this stuff and fast! I can say I had some awesome customers too, dang, I'm all nostalgic now...smh

All in all, bravo to your response!

(btw-b/c of your I scored tons of cvs clearance items, I'll post about it in the next week...getting home @ 10 pm from work every night doesn't help with posting!)

    ReplyDelete
  32. LOLOLOLOL @ Anonymous! CRITICISM FAIL!!! All aboard the FailBoat! FailCity, Population: Anonymous!

Seriously, though, what crawled up her/his butt and died? They're probably one of those CVS employees who are rude and hateful to customers for no apparent reason. And yes, I've seen my share of them! Even though I respect people who perform service jobs for very little (and I WAS one of those people for a good many years) there are employees who are rude and hateful and go out of their way to AVOID helping shoppers. It goes both ways.

So sit on it and rotate, Anonymous. Recessionista has tons of readers, and will continue to do so, because she ALWAYS lets us know where we can find a bargain, precisely because we don't have much money. And there's nothing wrong with being excited over a bargain. Nothing at all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I"m really lucky, the workers at my CVS are great..if a sale sign is in the wrong place, they don't even question it, they give you the benefit of the doubt. They have gone into the back before to look for items for me, and really go above and beyond what I would expect, especially for what they are being paid. I always make sure to tell them how much I appreciate it. They really do act like they enjoy their job and like to help people. That's why they get my business!

    ReplyDelete
  34. That was such a well-put response to such rude drivel from that commenter. I am a relatively new reader to this blog, but I absolutely love it! It was actually this blog that taught me about 'drugstore dupes'-I had no idea such awesomeness existed, and for that, I (and my bitty little wallet!) thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  35. First of all, the only reason you used the word "lagging" was to tell people that not everything that was on sale always had a sticker. You didn't do it to make fun of CVS employees. It's also not like you got all dramatic about there not being sticker. You just stated a fact that not all sale items were stickered.

Also, in terms of discontinued products, just because they are discontinued doesn't mean they are bad. In fact, according to Martin Lindstrom's book Buyology 8 out of 10 product launches fail here in the US. Does it mean the products were bad? No. Sometimes, they aren't marketed right. For example, back in March InStyle magazine named Maybelline's Shine Seduction as one of the lip glosses with the best color selection. Now I can find the Shine Seduction glosses at the Dollar Tree.

Beyond getting tingly about bargains, I think you are providing a valuable service for budget-crunched women, reviewing these products so that women know what they are getting. I think every woman can attest to being disappointed with a purchase. Because of beauty bloggers like you, at least we know what we are getting when we spend our hard-earned money on a product you reviewed.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You are my favorite Beauty Blogger! I check your blog regularly to find info on cosmetics I can afford...Being that I am one of those hard working, underpaid employees.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I beg to differ about you being the worst beauty blogger ever!! You have a wonderful blog that many people appreciate and come to when they want to know the skinny on budget brands.

I really don't know what she's soo mad about?! I worked in retail for years and know that if the stores I worked in didn't have customers (whether they be regular customers or sale scavengers--which I proudly admit I am), then I wouldn't have had a job.

...So, if CVS wants to maximize their beauty sale they need to make sure everything is marked down so everyone will know. I don't see anything wrong with you mentioning they were lagging in that department.

    You've got a great blog--keep it coming!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Recessionista, you are awesome. I love that didn't delete the comment and that you defended yourself. I love your blog and my wallet does too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. There ya go... love your response... I guess whoever that person is have nothing to do....

Keep blog because I love your blogs and every single day when i jump online I always check your blog to see if you have any awesome deals posted up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I work in retail (while I'm in nursing school.) and guess what? Your post didn't offend me one bit.

I've picked up some awesome tips from this blog; I happen to be a makeup and perfume addict but alas , as a working student my funds are a bit stretched. :-( So that's where the awesome tips come in. From reading your blog I've learned how I can get my perfume fix and not go broke :-)

All of this is to say , ignore the hater. I like to call people like this commenter outrage junkies. They go through life looking for things get angry about.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah I think everyone who has worked in retail (or nearly any job) can tell you people can be bitches and it can negatively impact your outlook...but who maybe that person needs to take a step back and reevaluate life.
I try a lot of products from your blog because I think it's foolish to spend a tank of gas on a mascara, and to not look good just because I work hard for little money. So whatever, you rock and apparently not just me thinks so.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow, that was weird. O.o I didn't think a single thing you said in all your posts about the CVS clearance was negative towards them. Personally, I'm rather happy that some of the clearance items aren't marked as such (like the HiP paints at my store) because then they don't disappear as quickly. XD Anyway, you really shouldn't feel bad about what that person said, and I think most CVS employees wouldn't get all defensive over your posts. -_-

The one thing I will say in any grumpy CVS employee's defense, is that our local Longs recently turned into a CVS and my roommate works there. He said that CVS policies are harder on the cashiers, and in addition corporate is constantly making them cut the employees' hours, so some people who are hired for full-time are only being given 8-12 hours a week. And because of that the store can barely function and the employees are rushed off their feet trying to handle all the normal stuff they have to do with so little staff. It really sucks for them.

But yeah, still no real excuse for what she said. Some people just like to find offense in everything.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My goodness. I'm sorry for that commenter. You have a huge fan base that supports you =)

    ReplyDelete
  44. WOW, ladies, I cannot believe this! I went to bed last night, still brooding over that anon comment (basically saying to myself, "The NERVE of this person to assume these things about ME?") and when I logged on to my blog today, I was absolutely blown away by the level of support that you have given me in these comments

I am speechless and, without trying to sound cheesy, your comments have really brought me to tears (in a good way!). I would have never in a million years thought I would be able to cultivate such a loving, embracing readership when I set out to start this blog last March, and I am just blown away and humbled to see the support and warm thoughts you have given me. To think that you give Nouveau Cheap even a few minutes of your day is mindblowing on its own, but then to see that you've taken the time out of your busy lives to leave comments like this makes me happy in a way that you could never imagine.

I guess that when they say every cloud has a silver lining, it's true. To think that a hurtful comment like that only paved the way for the comments I received from YOU...it's filling my heart with so much love I can't even begin to describe it!

If anything, your comments have made me even MORE dedicated to bringing you useful content, so I guess this commenter got the exact polar opposite of what s/he thought s/he was going to get!

I have completely run out of ways say thank you, so let me just say it like this.

If we were all friends in "real life" I would have all the confidence in the world knowing that "my girls" have my back. You certainly had my back in this situation and I will NEVER forget that!

Love and big hugs to all of you!

  45. Oh WOW. It's my policy to stay far away from drama and observe from afar, but let me tell you! I know Recessionista personally and she is one of the sweetest, most thoughtful, and non-judgemental people I know. Absolutely NOTHING of the sort that this anonymous person perceived was implied or inferred by her use of the term "lagging". She doesn't even NEED to be defended because the claim is competely without merit, but I want to say this as a consumer:

Thank God for us "demanding scavengers" who patronize retail establishments, even after clipping our coupons and doing our homework to get the best deals--or it wouldn't be in the budget otherwise. Without people walking through the door of any business, there wouldn't even be doors open to walk through anymore! Getting all aggro on an innocent beauty blogger about YOUR job is a little weird, ya think? Sounds like this person's time would be better spent elsewhere. Sad, just sad.

    Viva la lipgloss, girls!

  46. Worst Beauty Blog ever? Whatever. (insert eye roll and Valley Girl accent) Like other readers have already stated, Nouveau Cheap makes my day. Its my #1 resource for finding affordable, quality makeup. Your reviews are honest and this blog is nothing short of awesome. Never mind the the trolls who just pop by to stir up trouble. As Capt. jack Sparrow said, "Sticks and stones , love. Sticks and stones." BTW, I think he was a beauty looter, what with being an eyeliner wearing pirate and all. :-)

  47. That comment actually made me kind of angry. First off, I've worked retail, at an arts and crafts store. (About 4x the size of the CVS's around here.) It was not hard to get everything properly labeled, run the cash register, and also do returns on the side. It's not the customers fault if the store doesn't have enough employee's - we were always trained that the customer's satisfaction is the most important thing, because they are the ones keeping our store in business. Yes, it was minimum wage. $7.50 an hour when I worked there. In my honest opinion, if whoever wrote that wants to complain, then they should either go back to school to get a higher-end job with better pay, or be thankful that they even have a job when there are millions unemployed that would kill for their 'minimum wage' CVS job just to support their families. People like this get me aggravated.

Secondly, I love your blog! It is far, far, FAR from the 'worst beauty blog'. I've been up at college for the last four months, about forty minutes away from home. I couldn't take the bus back everyday, and you don't know how much fun it was to log on when I couldn't to see if you had any new posts so I could run down to the CVS next to campus and see what I could find! While everyone else is blogging about the high-end items (that I honestly can't afford all the time) you have an awesome little blog for things I can afford, and I love that. It's great to be able to see new finds, and have little adventures to find them myself.

Thank you for a great blog, and keep up the great work! :)

  48. Just wanted to add my support, and to let you know I saw a display f new Prestige lipsticks at Rite Aid this afternoon - something with the word "age" in it. Check them out for us?

  49. Don't worry about that *cracked* person; we got your back. Especially in this tight economy, scoops & tips like yours are just pure GOLD. I'm so glad that you like to share your love of affordable makeup *squeeage* with us. Keep up the great work!!

  50. That comment is just plain ridiculous! I'm so glad you wrote a post about it and defended yourself, and, if I may add, in the classiest way I've ever seen done by a beauty blogger in response to a hater's comment. You countered all of anonymous' claims with sound reasoning and clear explanations, without relying swear words or playing the part of a hurt victim. Major props to you, Recessionista!! You've shown that you're strong, intelligent, beautiful, AND classy! I hope others will take your post as an example of what to do when dealing with similar situations.

The readers of Noveau Cheap stand by you 100% of the way!! Don't listen to low-life haters who don't even know what they're talking about.

This part made me literally laugh out loud: "In addition, the clearance items are DISCONTINUED to make room for the new items, so why stock up on items that will never again be available?"
OBVIOUSLY, we would stock up on items that we know are about to be discontinued! Otherwise we would have to buy them from Ebay sellers who were actually smart enough to stock up when they had the chance. Speaking of which, my CVS has run out of the Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara, which I have been using religiously...that is, until it dried up last week. I might have to hunt for it on Ebay soon....

  51. Ah, stupid people. There really isn't much you can do. It's good that you stood up for yourself though! It's difficult to not be affecting by somebody being rude..but you know what kind of person you are, and you have to realize if someone is like that for no reason...then they definitely have a personal problem. They just found someone to take it out on. I've, unfortunately, learned that myself. And by the way, definitely not the worst blog ever! lol..this is literally one of the first sites I visit everyday.

  52. The fact that Anonymous couldn't even own their words tells you all you need to know about the worth of those words. You have one of the best beauty blogs out there, and arguably the best in the budget beauty niche, so don't let 'em get you down.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Not that you need it, because I mean, obviously you reek of AWESOME, but I'm going to throw my two cents in here anyway. Let me just say this right off the bat: YOU ARE A CLASS ACT. You took this person's obviously nasty attitude and addressed everything he said in his comments in such a mature manner.
Obviously, Anonymous is having a bad day - what cinched that for me was the bash at the end - worst beauty blog ever? Pssssh. That kind of unnecessary hatred is just the kind of thing I used to see on YouTube all the time when I had my review channel - I mainly dealt with drugstore items. LOTS of nasty haters, same comment theme in which they attempt to tear you down even though they know nothing at all about you.
I personally found Anonymous to be completely unfounded in their criticism. You rock, lady. I LOVE your blog. Obviously, I'm not alone in this!

  54. I LOVE your blog!! I really don't know what I would do without it. In fact, I went out today and bought the Loreal 360 Scrublet on your recomendation. :) I trust you and really appreciate all your hard work and attention to detail. Gar, it's so annoying how some people simply don't "get it". Much love!! ~Liz~

  55. Wow, I think that person was reading too far into your post, not to mention taking it too far.

  56. Just wanted to say, I have been reading your blog for a few months and I think it is THE BEST BEAUTY BLOG EVER!!!! You feature products that we can all afford. Most beauty blogs are all high end, and while I indulge in high end products from time to time, the reality is I can not afford them all the time. Thank you so much for everything you do. In the short time I've been reading your blog I have already scored so many great deals I would not have known about otherwise.

In regards to Anon's comments. She/he obviously has issues to read into what you wrote like that. Comments like that really irk me. I have worked retail before, and let me tell you regardless of whether CVS employees make minimum wage or not, they have to do their job plain and simple. Part of their job is putting the stickers on. When I worked retail I was happy to do even the most menial tasks, like labeling clearance items, because it was a PAYCHECK. I know retail workers do have to deal with irate customers and make low pay for a lot of work, but that is not an excuse not to get your job done. Even I was annoyed that there were products that were not labeled correctly at my CVS, it does not mean I took it out on the cashier. I just took the products to the register and asked for a scan like you did. What is the big deal? You did not go into CVS and rant and rave like a maniac, you were just tipping us off that some sale products may not have been labeled yet. Anon needs to get a life.

  57. Okay- I've been lurking and reading your blog forever. On my google reader- I have subscriptions to over 30 blogs, and YOURS is the one I log in and read first. FIRST.

So no, you do NOT have the worst blog ever. People are stupid. End of story.

Love you and what you do! :)

  58. Yikes! Sounds like Anonymous could use some PMS meds from CVS.
Your blog is my favorite. ^-^

  59. Ladies! If you thought I was speechless before, I am REALLY beyond speechless now. I don't even know what to say in response to this outpouring of support. I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy! lol.

But seriously, if I am ever having a bad day, all I need to do is revisit this post and be reminded that I have a wonderful, intelligent, witty and BEAUTIFUL group of women who are supportive of me and what I'm trying to do with Nouveau Cheap. I am thrilled beyond words that my blog has seemed to resonate with so many of you (active commenters and lurkers alike!).

Please do not think that I take even a second of this for granted, because believe me, when I first started this blog I wrote probably over 100 blog posts that didn't receive more than one or two comments each (if I was lucky!). I am GRATEFUL every single day when I see your comments and ESPECIALLY the comments on this post because this was a personal attack and you coming to my defense really means the world to me.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for your support here, and I have to say that if that the anonymous commenter has even dared to come back here, s/he is probably feeling like a real jerk right now after reading what you've all had to say! LOL!!!

    Love and BIG HUGS,
    R. xo

  60. Wow, that was heavy.

I totally understand AND support you. I've done the retail game and i've never thought negatively about someone scoring a deal. If anything, i'm happy for them!

Sounds more like this person has some unresolved issues.

And being on the phone while cashing out drives me CRAZY too! It also irks me when my boyfriend barely looks at cashiers in the face. I don't think its intentional but it drives me nuts.

You are awesome miss recessionista! I think i like you even more now! :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Antonea: Thank you for that!! I think you're the first person to mention the cell phone issue and I'm so glad that you feel the same way. It bothers me SO much, I can't even begin to talk about it without turning red in the face! And I hear you about not looking cashiers in the face--I know a lot of people do this without even knowing it, but I think it's important to make a conscious effort to treat everyone with respect and decency, right? You are awesome right back! xo

  62. Ummmm. My thoughts I have already been expressed by the other readers. I just want to say that I get "tingly" about bargains too. Long live the deal "scavengers"!!!!!!

  63. Jan-nini: Thank you so much!!! And yes, long live us "scavengers"! LOL! :D

  64. this is a case of mis-interpretation.

im so sorry for the anonymous commenter to have read your post wrongly.

i hope this has not made u think of stopping blogging about great and affordable beauty products. keep up the good work!

  65. Wow, G, I'm so sorry! What a butthead! (To use some real mature language =)) I LOVE your blog ×100- it is the only one I read, and you always put so much kind feeling and personality into your words that I feel like you are talking directly to me. Honestly, I almost feel like you are a really close friend- someone with an amazing sense of humor and such a cheery attitude, it inspires me each and every day to be kind to people like you are. Anyway, you are so awesome and I really like/admire you. Love this blog, too!!! xoxo
