Beauty News Round-Up (New 24HR Beauty Channel, a Big Launch from Sally Hansen, and More)

There's a lot going on in the world of beauty right now, so I thought I would do a quick wrap-up for you, just so we're all up to date!

New 24HR Beauty Channel - on October 31 (Halloween), QVC will launch a new 24HR TV network devoted 100% to beauty! The channel, called Beauty iQ, will feature live and pre-taped content devoted 100% to beauty (color cosmetics. skincare, and fragrance). Over 50 prestige beauty brands will be featured on the channel, including Givenchy, IT Cosmetics, Edward Bess, Tarte, Tatcha, Nudstix, Mally Beauty, Becca, Peter Thomas Roth, Laura Geller Josie Maran, and Nest. The experts behind those brands will be appearing on-air as well. Beauty iQ will be viewable in the US via DirecTV, U-verse, Dish and Roku. There will be live programming five nights a week, Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00 p.m. to midnight ET, and repeated immediately after for West Coast viewers. View the current schedule for Beauty iQ programming HERE

Walgreens Acquisition of Rite Aid - you may recall that almost one year ago to the day (10/27/15). I posted about Walgreens' plans to purchase Rite Aid. I hadn't heard much about the acquisition lately, until I saw this article on Fortune.com. Apparently, Walgreens must close 500-1000 Rite Aid stores (per FTC regulations) before the acquisition can be complete. And according to that article, Kroger was interested in purchasing 658 of those Rite Aid stores from Walgreens. But it appears that that purchase has hit a snag (see the article here for details) so we may have to wait a bit longer for any official announcements as to the final acquisition of Rite Aid by Walgreens (and what that will mean for customers of both chains). According to this article, the sale is supposed to be final on January 27, 2017.

NYX Opens First Flagship Store - NYX opened its first-ever flagship store today (10/28) in the heart of Union Square (Manhattan).

Estée Lauder to Acquire Becca Cosmetics - I had been hearing rumors that this might happen, but on October 21st it became official. Estée Lauder is purchasing Becca Cosmetics for an undisclosed amount. Estée Lauder adds Becca to their ever-growing portfolio which already includes MAC, GLAMGLOW, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Smashbox, Tom Ford Beauty, La Mer, Aveda, and more

Coty to Acquire GHD - in addition to its recent acquisition of several P&G beauty brands (including CoverGirl and Max Factor), Coty is set to acquire GHD for $511 million

New Sally Hansen Line to Make a Big Splash at the Drugstore Soon - thanks to longtime contributor Marcy for the tip about this one. Sally Hansen is gearing up to unleash a new line of nail polishes at the drugstores called Color Therapy. This line (38 shades plus a top coat and cuticle oil) is already up on the Sally Hansen website here and I'm sure you'll be seeing it in-store at all retailers VERY soon. Apparently, what sets this line apart from their other lines is that the formula contains a "nourishing and moisturizing proprietary oil blend", which explains the "therapy" part of the name.

  1. I'm looking forward to the Color Therapy line. I remember some other nail polish brand released something like that, but it had poor reviews. If this one can deliver on all the promises it would be a major game changer.

    1. I'm looking forward to trying it too, Cyan! And since the bottle shape is identical to the CSM line, it has me wondering if Sally Hansen is replacing the CSM line with this one?? I know that retailers only have limited space for each brand, and we know these bottles will fit perfectly in the CSM spots in those permanent wall displays. I love the CSM line so hopefully both will continue to exist (or maybe they'll reduce the shades in the CSM line to make room for the new line?). Guess we'll have to wait and see!

    2. I'll have to try the CMS line before it is replaced then, based on your recommendation. I'm not brand loyal, but I loved the Sally Hansen Luxe Lace line so much that I buy it all up if I see it at Marshalls/TJ Maxx every time. So actually, maybe I'll get to try CMS at a discount when it becomes displaced by the Color Therapy line! lol

    3. I found it at Walmart on Tuesday!! I had been stalking every store I could think of once I first started seeing it on Canadian blogs!

  2. Finally something new from SH. They have not released anything new in a long time. Just last year, they would do all sorts of new shades but I really didn't see much this year. And I guess they totally gave up on the Salon Effects nail stickers which I loved. I bet this new polish will be pricey though. Some are getting to be as much as OPI, like their Complete Salon Manicure and their Gel lines are around $8. I imagine this new polish will be as well.

    1. Carol I was just thinking about Salon Effects! I loved those so much because they last longer than any others nail strips I've ever used. They look like they're totally on their way out (no longer on the Ulta site, only one shade available on the Walmart site). So sad!!

    2. I bought a TON 2 years ago at the 99 cents store. I've also seen them recently at Big Lots. They were 1.00 each. Remember when they came out? They were pricey.

    3. That would also explain why I've seen it (recently) in the cosmetic bins at the 99 Cents Only stores. I never found a pattern that made me really want to try them, though.

If you're near a 99 Cents Only store, though, go check out the bins! Lots of Color Tattoo (yay!) and some eyeliners in there. Even saw an IG post that someone found a bunch of Master Glaze sticks, though I haven't been lucky enough to find those...

    4. That makes me sad. I love the Salon Effects as they last longer than all other nail stickers, don't really chip, and are much easier to apply than nail polish, not to mention all the fun designs. I'm glad I bought some every time I found them on clearance!

  3. I'm surprised that QVC is launching an entire channel devoted to beauty. I used to watch QVC's beauty segments often until their shows started to become very, very redundant as they focused on the same handful of brands (WEN, It Cosmetics, Philosophy, Clarisonic). I think the only thing I ever bought from QVC was DiorShow Mascara. That's about it. IMO, their prices are too high, they rarely have free s&h and returns are difficult. I like it when Too Faced and Benefit do their presentations on HSN.

    1. This appears to a departure from the QVC beauty dept, considering all the brands listed (see my post). I'm hoping for some exclusive new value sets (Tatcha, Becca, Nest and Tarte value sets in particular!). Guess we'll have to wait and see...

    2. IMHO, QVC is great with returns. I've bought a few beauty sets that I ended up returning. A mally TSV( the eye color sticks were made in China and I did not like that). I bought an IT cosmetics set that included an illumination BB cream. I thought it was too glowy for my skin. I accidentally forgot to include the brush and I still got my full refund. I've returned other items, even after the 30 days and they've never rejected anything. If anything is defective, they will even refund your return shipping. Oh and btw, am I the only person who does not like WEN?

  4. Been waiting for the SH color therapy for some time now. It is available in Canada and I was eyeing one particular color so yay, finally.
Not sure how I feel about all the acquisition news.
Have to go check those nyx store, wonder if they have more products in the store than Harmon's rather large NYX display several blocks up.

  5. Wow! I can't believe that Walgreens is buying Rite Aid. I wonder what this will mean for the Plenti points program?

    1. The plenti points has been useless for me... all this time using that card and I still have zero points. But at least for those that got the card to work for them, the program should still be available at the other retailers. I much prefer Walgreens program, especially since you can earn points without spending money.

    2. My guess is the Plenti points will no longer work at former Rite Aid stores and you'll have to switch over to Walgreens points. But, Plenti points will still work at Macy's, etc., so you would have somewhere to use them if you have acquired a bunch.

I actually like the Walgreens points, though. You can earn 1000 per month just by hooking up your Fitbit and walking 10,000 steps a day -- you don't even have to buy anything. (My main beef with Walgreens is that they closed down Beauty.com and Drugstore.com and their own website is just not anywhere in the same league.)

  6. I can't wait to try color therapy but I LOVE Salon effects. I guess they didn't make enough profit to continue the line. They also lasted long for me and loved the holiday themes. I've stocked up since I noticed new designs weren't coming out and Ulta had them at 50% off a few months back.

  7. I was at the NYX launch today in Union Square. The store is small for a flagship but it was fun to attend.

    1. Oooh how fun! Did you get anything or see anything special? And yeah, I'm not surprised that it was kind of small..I can only imagine the leasing price for square footage in Union Square! Yikes! Lol.

  10. Maybe at the new Nyx store their popular lip colors won't be gone like they always are at Harmon lol. Discount stores in NYC have Carried CSM for $1.99 for over a year, so yes maybe they are phasing it out. My local rite aid hasn't had new beauty displays in forever so I assume they are shutting it down.

  11. I wonder what the requirements for closing stores will be? One of our Rite Aids is right across the street from a wags, so I'm sure that one is going to go. Another is about two and a half blocks away from a wags, and happens to be the one I go to the most. I hope it gets to stay open. Maybe once the buyout is done Rite Aid will start stocking LE collections again. Wags gets some, but then they pull them anytime there is a sale, so I end up missing a lot of Sinful and wnw now. None of the other stores in my area stock LE items anymore. (Meijer, CVS, Kmart, Walmart)

  12. When I first found out about this line, I immediately tried to order online. But I couldn't find any where that would ship to the US. So I called SH customer service, the rep told me the line was being released in the US Nov 1. But yesterday while at my local Walmart I seen it was already out!!! So I grabbed 2 shades. Now just looking for Indiglow!

  13. I saw some of those new Sally Hansen polishes at Walmart recently, but I was in a hurry and didn't really have time to look at them closely. So they are on the shelf in some places.

  14. There is a little blurb in the latest issue of Allure about the women who helped create the new SH nail polish. I LURVE the no light gels from SH. I'm currently wearing Birthday Suit without the top coat and its lasted a week!! I also just picked up some nail strengthener with "real" gold flakes at the 99 cents store.

  15. In regards to the Sally Hansen line, my Walgreens had 27 (I counted) different shades between the Insta-dri, Miracle and CSM line on clearance for 2.99-3.99. All the Salon Effects are reduced and 4 Xtreme wear shades are going as well. It looks like they'll be making a lot of room for new stuff.

  16. This is off topic, but Sephora just posted the Bite beauty trio of 3 full size lipsticks for $24 http://www.sephora.com/luminous-cr-me-lipstick-trio-P411612?skuId=1870500

  18. My Walmart has the full line of Color Therapy. It is on an endcap for the Salon Manicure. I found a Color Therapy top coat and cuticle oil apart from the line. As for the price, $6.72, Carol G. So not bad at all. The main difference in the bottles is the rose gold cap which is gorgeous. This walmart also had all the new Revlon stuff: Kiss balms, ColorStay pressed powder, ColorStay Creme Eye Shadow, ColorStay 2 in 1 Angled Kajal Eyeliner, ColorStay gel lipcolor and Insta Blush. I scored with all this newness today!
