The fate of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Polishes: revealed!

A huge thanks to readers Josie and Annette for this one! Sally Hansen responded to questions about the fate of their CSM polishes today on their Facebook page. Here's a direct quote:
... the Complete Salon Manicure line is being re-launched and will contain a new formula. Please look for the existing and new shades on your shelves starting December 1st!
So there you have it, straight from the horse's mouth! They're relaunching the line with a new formula. Exisiting shades are not going away, and they'll debut, along with NEW shades, December 1st.

In the meantime, you can get the original formula at Dollar Tree for $1 (or FREE if you have any $1 off Sally Hansen manufacturer's coupons lying around), at Walgreens for around $2 and it's been reported that Big Lots has six-packs for $6 (there have been multi-pack sightings at Ross and Marshalls as well). Oh, and my mom spotted them at her 99-cent Only store too.

Thanks again, Josie and Annette, for the scoop and for solving the mystery for us!

  1. Thank you sooo much, G! So good to know! I really love this line!

  2. wow, their old formula will probably be discounted to get them off the shelf. I always get most of my Sally nail stuff at Ulta's clearance section. They have good colors there and I am not nail color picky. So if i find a cool new color to my collection and it is on clearance, it makes my day.

Do you know if they are keeping the flat brush? I love that brush, because it helps to get all corners of the nail.

    1. It's not a ”probably”, they ARE getting rid of the old formula, which is why they're on clearance and at the dollar stores. :)

I don't know if they're getting rid of the brushes...I only know what I posted above. Sorry!

    1. Omg, I feel like such a dummy for not making that connection!! You rock, Hana!!! Thanks SO much for asking them!! :D

    2. haha. Hana doesn't really translate to Sarah in most people's minds, so I don't blame you at all. XD I asked out of my own curiosity, but I'm really glad this helped other people out too. :D I like being helpful.

    1. I'm wondering if, instead of putting these on clearance, certain retailers will opt to sell their inventory to distributors that sell discontinued stock to retailers like Big Lots, Dollar Tree, Ross, etc? I have NO idea how that works, but it's a theory...

    2. Places like Ulta will probably just leave the current display up with the polishes at full price until the new formula/display arrives. Then what's left of the old ones will go on clearance.

TBH I think it's a little weird Walgreens is just going to let all that shelf space sit empty for months.

    3. My Walgreens took them off their shelves so I'm guessing it'll be sold to discounters. I sure hope it lands at my LOCAL stores because I love those polishes and can't wait to get them in my hot little hands for a buck.

    4. I've always wondered where large/chain discount stores get their inventory, but my theory is that it does not come from other stores; I think it comes from either the manufacturer or from a company that buys the inventory from a manufacturer which then sells to the other stores. I know there ARE stores (usually salvage type stores) that do purchase from other stores, but it's obvious their products have once been on a shelf somewhere else.

When drugstores (like Walgreens) receive their shipments of polish (using this as an example), they're often packaged nicely in boxes so there's generally no damage during transport. Sometimes Walgreens has to send back items, other times they clearance them. When they return them, they don't have the nice boxes to repackage them to prevent them from getting damaged (scuffed, broken, etc.).

When I purchase at stores like Dollar Tree, all the products are in pristine condition. I've never bought a bottle that looked like it had rubbed up against other bottles in a shipping container, nor have I seen dirty bottles or caps that had dried polish on the rims from customers trying them out in-store. I can't say the same about polishes I find at Walgreens - it's not uncommon to find spilled polish on the bottles or dried polish on the rims.

    5. Melissa - are you sure they removed them from the shelves and didn't sell out? I went the first day of the sale and most of the shades were available, many with multiple bottles (there were only a few missing shades). I went again yesterday and I think there was a total of 4 bottles left.

  5. I found these all discounted to $2.29 at Duane reade in NYC with a huge variety of colors- I finally got angel wings-so excited!!
The old formula is great! I can't imagine what the new form will be like?!?

  6. I spotted them on big discount at Duane Reade in NYC (I can't remember exactly what they cost, but I think they were around $2.40). I have a navy blue - I actually love the formula and the brush, but don't love a lot of the colors in the line. I hope they do a few new colors in the relaunch!

  7. Yay I am glad to know they are bringing them back. I had always wondered if they were any good but couldn't see myself spending $8 on a sally hansen nail polish when I can get opi for the same price. I found one on clearance back in April and thought it would be a good way to try them and see if they are worth the $8. I just recently used it since it was a fall color and Omg I feel in love with them, the brush fits my nails so perfectly. The one complaint I have and hopefully it is what they are fixing about them is that even the dark colors can be a little sheer. Can't wait to try out the new formulation.

  8. I think they're a bit steep at around $8 but they're good polishes. Oddly I find they work better without a base coat, which these have built in, anyways, don't they? I do think the brushes hold a bit too much polish, but brushing some off on the bottle's inner rim does seem to do the trick.

  9. I just picked up a bunch of these yesterday at Walgreens. They had them on clearance for $1.99 each so I got 1 of every color available and ended with 7 new bottles in colors I didn't already have. Whoo Hoo!!!

  10. That's good news! I just LOVE Commander in Chic. I don't need a new bottle yet, but I am hoping it remains a permanent fixture in their line. I don't see how it couldn't! They are such a steal at $2!

  11. YAY! This is great news! I really didn't want this great line to be d/c!

  12. Annette you are right in my opinion about what happens to the products that come from the drugstores. They don't go to the dollar tree, big lots etc. The reason I know this is because I have a couple of stores around me, think indoor flea market sorta. They buy the shelf pulls from Rite-Aid, CVS, Walgreens etc. They always have tons of makeup and nail polish. All for $1 sometimes 2 for $1 it's great but alot of times the bottles can be scuffed up or there will be another polish that's leaked on them. Which is no big deal really, I bring em home and scrub em up with acetone and they look good as new. What happens when biglots and other discount stores end up with the merchandise, is they do a buy out of the remaining stock that's at the warehouse. Think of it like this, those 12 shades that are on the shelf, they're on thousands of shelfs, then there's a huge stockpile sitting somewhere in a warehouse waiting to go to the shelves. If something is pulled or discontinued, the stockpile needs somewhere to go, so they end up at the big discounters.

BTW, i've gotten all my CSM for $1 (with the exception of love me not, that I thought was duochrome so I stupidly paid $8 for it) I haven't gotten any from this sale yet, but I hope I can find them somewhere here in the boonies, they're like pokemon and I gotta collect them all lol

Thank's for the tips G, and fellow readers.

  13. Im a bit late on the news but thank you for posting. I wondered why i found a ton of colors on clearance and all of a suddon they dissapeared. I hate the stem but love the brush, didnt have any formula issues other then being a tad thin on the metalics. Hope the new formula still works for me i have my eye of a few of the new shades.
