Review: Avon High Definition Color Collection (pic heavy)

I promised more makeup reviews and I meant it! Today I'd like to share with you my thoughts on some of the new Avon High Definition Color products that I was lucky enough to receive for review recently. I've been testing all four of these products for a few weeks now, and I'm delighted to tell you that Avon's got a real winner on their hands. If it's been a while since you last ordered from Avon, I think one (or a few) of these new goodies might have you plotting an order soon (and of course don't forget to check for current coupon codes before you order!).

First let's start out by saying that it seems as though everyone's been putting "HD" or "High Def" in the name of their products lately. While many of us may be growing a bit tired of it, I have to say that Avon has infused some extra sparkle and shimmer into some of their "high def" products and I am loving the results.

Let's begin with the new Avon Ultra Color Rich Mega Impact Lipstick SPF 15:

Avon Ultra Color Rich Mega Impact Lipstick SPF 15 in Fuchsia Fun (retail: $8 but currently on sale 2/$6.99 on the Avon website)

I love how this lipstick is "cut" like a diamond!

According to Avon, "Chromapixel Technology boots color by reflecting light and enhancing shine to amplify each shade's true hue." How does that translate to real life? Well one swipe of this lipstick on my lips and I'm left with a color so shimmery it's almost got a foil-like effect. Luckily, I was also able to apply it lighter and achieve a softer look, but if you're wanting some serious shimmery impact, this is one lippie you should definitely consider. I do want to warn you that, because of the intense sparkle and shimmer in this lipstick, it did feel a little grainy at first, but the grainy texture faded pretty quickly for me.

Next, let's move on to new Glimmersticks Diamonds Eye Liners:

Avon Glimmersticks Diamonds Eyeliner in Brown Sugar (retail: $6, currently on sale for $2.99)

I'm a huge fan of the regular Avon Glimmersticks because, for my oily skin, these wear exceptionally well due to their drier consistency. But even though they're drier than most pencils, they don't tug when I apply them, and they have great pigmentation. I can really get a full day's wear out of most of these shades, and this new Diamonds formula is no exception. But of course I know you're all probably the most curious about the "diamonds" in this formula, so let me show you some swatches (and I'll also show you some pics of me wearing this product a little bit later). And how can I forget to mention that these are automatic pencils? I loooove automatic pencils because I just hate sharpening, period.

Here is Brown Sugar in two different forms of lighting. As you can see, it's not really a true brown, but more of a brownish-blackish-charcoal color. It's a great alternative for someone like me who can't really wear dark, dark black eyeliner, which tend to look a bit too severe on me. Also, it's hard to capture the sparkle or "diamonds" in this liner because, thankfully, unlike glitter liners, it's VERY subtle. So subtle that it's hard to see it at all when it's on your eyes, but if the light catches your eyes in just the right way, you can detect it. I think it's the perfect way to take a basic liner and give it a little extra something, without going over the top. I think I'd call this a more mature type of glitter liner, for those of us who can't or don't want to wear glitter. Oh, and I don't know if the sparkle is different for each pencil, but for Brown Sugar, the sparkles are gold, which is so pretty.

Now let's move on to Avon Magix Cashmere Finish Liquid Foundation:

Avon Magix Cashmere Finish Liquid Foundation SPF 10 in Nude (retail: $11, currently on sale for $7.95)

I have to come clean and tell you I've never been a big fan of Avon foundations. But this one? It's totally changed my entire perception of Avon. Just read the copy on the box above (click to enlarge) because it really sums up the formula perfectly. It's a liquid-mousse, which means it's light and airy and blends like a dream. It's great for light-to-medium coverage, and even though I'm a full-coverage kind of gal, I didn't feel naked when I wore this because it really softens my imperfections (read: diminishes the appearance of my pores). With just a touch of setting powder, I'm good to go without any breakthrough shine for several hours. Do you want further proof as to how much I like this foundation? I was sent a color that isn't a good match for my skintone and I STILL continued to wear it for over a week straight. I love the finish that much. Here are some swatches on my arm to kind of give you an idea of the texture:

And last but CERTAINLY not least, I'd like to show you the new Avon Super Extend Mascara:

Avon Super Extend Mascara in Black (retail: $8.50 but currently on sale 2/$7.99)

I love many things about this mascara. The first? The brush. I love how it's tapered (see above) and how the end of the brush really makes it so easy to get into the nooks and crannies of your lashes (especially your lower lashes). It really is a cinch to apply this mascara and coat every single lash, no matter how tiny.

The second thing I love about this mascara is that there is absolutely no clumping for me. If you're looking for well-defined lashes, I think you might love this formula. It doesn't give a lot of volume but that's OK by me (yes, the volume-addict is ok with this!) because my lashes just look so well-defined and long. I haven't experienced any flaking whatsoever, and this formula removes easily for me with my regular cleanser and also my towelettes.

Let me show you some before-and-afters so that you can see both the Glimmersticks Diamonds and Super Extend Mascara on my eyes:

My eye with nothing but concealer and a little powder.

Glimmersticks Diamonds in Brown Sugar and one coat of Super Extend Mascara in Black.

A different angle.

Same eyeliner, two coats Super Extend Mascara.

A different angle.

I hope you can kind of see the sparkle in the Glimmersticks Diamonds Eye Liner (look at my upper lid in the first pic). It's really subtle but even prettier in real life. As for this mascara? I LOVE it. Honestly, I just can't seem to find anything wrong with it, because it defines so well and wears great all day (no smudging, no flaking, no racoon eyes). Definitely worth a shot if you're looking for a good mascara that defines and lengthens. In fact, this is what I was hoping Maybelline Lash Stiletto would be for me, but Lash Stiletto was just so dry that it was impossible for me to apply. So if Lash Stiletto failed you, I might consider giving this one a whirl.

Have you tried any of these new Avon High Definition Color products yet? Are you thinking about placing an order? I would love to hear your thoughts so leave a comment and let me know what you think!

  1. That new Avon stuff looks great! I hope my roommates pay me back for the electricity bill so I have some spending money.

  2. I have two of the High Definition lipsticks, and while I love the color payoff, the texture bothers me a bit. It's, like you said, somewhat grainy, and I've also found that it's really..slippery? I don't know if that's the right word for it, but it just doesn't seem to stay put when I put it on. I think this is definitely a lipstick that you have to practice a lot with before you can actually wear it. Or at least that's how it's going to be for me, haha.

  3. PCS: Awww, I totally remember those days! Sorry about that, but hopefully you'll have some extra funds soon. :)

Jean: I think I understand what you mean and, for me, I tend to treat this lipstick more like I'm wearing a lip gloss when I wear it. I find myself being a little more "careful" and that seems to do the trick. Also, if I apply it with a lighter hand, I've found that it gives a nice, almost stain-like pigment to my lips, with less sparkle and slip. Have you tried wearing it lighter? Hope that helps! :)

  4. Ooooh I love how you lined your eyes!
And the mascara looks like an awesome product as well!

Speaking of mascara, do you know if anyone has reviewed the Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara? How is it comparing to the L'oreal lash serum?

And about comparing (oh my thoughts are just running everywhere lol!) I was at Walmarts today and I thought WnW's new nailpolish "Casting Call" seems similar to SH "So much fawn" and Rimmel's "English Rose"? Would you happen to have those colors and do a comparison please? Thanks!

  5. I'm sad, the lipstick looks rather frosty. >.< I hate frosty lipsticks.

But the foundation and mascara look awesome! I may have to make my first ever Avon order once I'm done moving. <3

  7. Fay: Thank you, sweetie! I don't think I've seen any full reviews on the new Revlon mascara yet, but then again I'm behind on reading the blogs I subscribe to! If you find a review, will you let me know? And I'm sorry, but I actually don't own any of the three polishes you mentioned. :( But I know that Walgreens carries all three of those brands, so maybe you can go to your local Walgreens (if you have one in your area) and do a comparison? Hope that helps!

Hana: Actually, it's not as frosty as it is sparkly/shimmery. It looks frosty on my hand because of the way the light is catching it (making it look white). Does that make sense? I'd love to know what you get if you place an Avon order! :)

Alina: You are so welcome! And thank you so much for the kind words about my lashes. This stuff is awesome--I'd love to know what you think if you try it! :) xo

  8. In El Salvador, lots of the women there requested Avon products and I gre up seeing Avon everywhere, every friend and family member had all sorts of Avon. Anyways, onto my point, I like Avon products, haven't fallen in love with much yet (other than an awesome duo eyecream/gel) and you give me such hope with the mascara and eyeliner!! They look promising!

  9. The first pic of mascara is one coat, seriously? That's lush! And the others look amazing, too. What I don't like about Avon is they have different products where I live. Maybe they suit products to geographical skin types, but that's just my speculation.

  10. I honestly swear by Avon lipsticks. They are really great quality. I should blog about them soon!!

The Avon magix liquid foundation sounds so intriguing. I must hunt down an avon rep :)

  11. Thanks so much for the review! I am looking forward to the eyeliner. My skin is so oily, crisco has nothing on me...unfortunately. Well, it will be a good thing when I'm old.

  12. my coms keep getting eaten. it's very sad.

i like Avon and have found their lip products to be especially good. (also had success with Magix Face Perfecting Foundation- it's like a tinted primer that doubles as foundation. good stuff.)

i was curious about this lippie and foundation, so thank you for covering them; and i would not have taken the liner or mascara seriously, so thanks for bringing my attention to them.

now to pay my bills so i can shop....

  15. Fay: OMG, after I responded to your comment, I remembered that I HAVE see a full review of Grow Luscious, and it's a great review to boot! Check this out:

And JenJen, please forgive my temporary memory loss. Your review was so helpful and I can't believe I forgot to mention it the first time! :) xo

  16. Janine: Wow, I had no idea about Avon in El Salvador. That is so interesting! Thanks for sharing that info with us! As for the mascara and eyeliner, I am super impressed with both, and I would love to know what you think of them if you try them! :)

jo: Yep, one coat! Crazy, right? And that is interesting about the products being different where you live. So the products in this review are not on your country's website?

becky: I haven't tried an Avon lipstick in a few years, but I have to say that after this experience, I am definitely wanting to purchase more. This lippies reminds me of those old Maybelline Diamond Shine lipsticks (I think that's what they were called). Do you remember those? And of course I'd love to see a review if you get that foundation. :)

Laura: You are so welcome! These liners rank right up there with my Revlon ColorStay automatic liners and my Styli-Style liners. They don't budge for several hours, even on my super oily skin. Hope that helps! :)

beautifulmonday: Awww, thank you for the compliment on the liner. I usually wear my liner the exact same way in every pic I post, so I wanted to do it a tiny bit different for this review and I'm thrilled you noticed! And yes, I am taking both the liner and mascara VERY seriously after putting them to the test! I'd love to know what you think if you try either one. :)

fatbottmdgrl: Glad you've been enjoying Avon products too! And WOW!! Your CVS haul was amazing! I am so impressed!! Way to go!! :D

  17. The foundation, and mascara look like great prospects. I'll have to contact my local Avon rep and get my hands on some of these items. I've meant to ask how did it go with the the Studio Secrets Base? I'm curious to know if its a yay or a nay. Hope you're having a wonderful day dahhling ;)

  18. I love your mascara reviews! I have the same lash problems as you, so it's great to see pics of the before & after! Thanks!! I really love Avon's Super Shock mascara, but this one looks great too!

  19. Miss Go Lightly: Hi, love! The jury's still out on the Studio Secrets Base. I've been testing it for a few days now and...I'm just not sure yet how I feel about it! I will definitely post a review in a few more days though. :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. chickadee: Thank you so much for that, honey! I think that, if your lashes are like mine, you might really love this new mascara. Please keep me posted if you try it? :)

  21. Honestly, I've only tried it once or twice. I'll have to try applying it more lightly! The colors are great, and definitely do look like they'll work well as stains.

  22. Good old avon! I love the shape of the lipstick but the insane shimmer has pur me off a little. The mascara looks great!

  23. The lipsticks seems to be shimmery for me -_-

I've ordered the SuperExtend mascara some times ago but I haven,t tried it yet. Seems amazing!
