My Role (If I Have One?)

Over the course of the last week, I have received some very thoughtful and kind requests from some readers of this blog. They have asked me to use my platform to speak about certain topics of the day related to politics and world affairs. So I'd like to take a moment to address this, because I feel that it's important to address.

From day one, I had a vision for my blog. It was to be a welcomed diversion from "real life" for myself and others. Some of you may not know this, but my blog was actually born of a very difficult time for me, when I was laid off from a job I held for over 10 years due to the economic downturn in the mid 2000s. This blog was a reaction to the feelings I had at that time. Sort of a, "Well, my career and everything I worked toward for my entire life is gone. What now? Hey! Why don't I focus on my inner passion for a while? Beauty products it is!"

Since 2009, we as both a nation, and world, have gone through so much, and we've seen so much. Through it all, I have tried my best to remain a welcomed diversion from "real life", even when it was incredibly challenging for me to remain on-topic. Is it more challenging for me today? Yes. It is more challenging for me every single day. Some mornings I wake up, read the news, and think, "How in the hell can I talk about shampoo right now?" The division we all see in this country, in 2017, can be felt on a micro level, right down to something as simple as reading the comments on a YouTube video. We ALL see the insults and attacks from both sides everywhere we look these days. Everywhere.

So what do I do? Do I use my platform to talk about things that truly matter in our everyday lives? Yeah, I've thought about it, about a million times. But then I also think about the fact that it would be very awkward to blog about something as deeply significant as say, human rights, and then in the very next blog post say, "Hey, check out this new lipstick!" Does that mean that it can't be done? No, it absolutely can, but I also need to respect and consider WHY you come to my blog every day.

Based on the feedback that I've received from so many of you over the years, I find that you too, use my blog as diversion from "real life". I have received many emails over the course of my blogging career that go something like this:

G, I just want to let you know that I appreciate your blog. My mother's in the hospital right now and I read your blog during those long hours by her bedside when she's sleeping. This blog takes me out of my troubles for a while, and I want to thank you for that.

I have heard from many amazing men and women over the years who have taken the time to reach out to me and let me know that when I blog about a silly little thing like facial cleanser, I provide them with a much-needed, momentary escape from the realities of everyday life. And you know what? It is a much-needed escape for me too. Which is probably why I have continued to blog here, almost every single of day of my life, since 2009.

I dislike the term "Know your lane" because I feel that it implies that you need to stick to one thing in life. I think broadening your perspectives and trying new things is fundamental to a well-lived life. So I'm not going to "know my lane" here. But I AM going to "know my audience" and YOU have told me, time and time again, that you come here as an escape. So it is with your precious feedback that I tell you that I am going to continue to blog about lipstick and moisturizer and all of those silly things. As much as I sometimes want to shout from the rooftops about the events of the day, I am respecting your wishes and the very reason you come to this blog in the first place. To do anything else would be a disservice to the men and women whom, for years now, have used my blog as a distraction from real life issues.

You're free to call me a cop-out in the comments below. I'm ready for it. But please keep in mind what I've written here before you leave a comment like that. I do not in any way feel that I'm copping out. I am sticking to what you have told me that you love about this blog, time and time again, over the years. If one day, all of you say, "You know what G? I would much rather hear about politics on this blog", then I may change my mind. But for now, I am honoring YOUR wishes and sentiments.

Your silly little distraction from everyday life forever and always,
G.

PS: the one thing I WILL say about world events right now is this: vote with your dollar. Support the brands, beauty and otherwise, you think are doing the right thing (whatever that "right thing" is to YOU). And consider taking some money out of your beauty budget each month to support the causes that YOU think are important. It's not my place to tell you which causes I think are deserving of your contributions, but they're out there and it's as simple as a two-second Google search to find them.

PPS: I hate that I have to say this, but I will not be approving any hurtful or divisive comments on this post. That's not what this post is about. Sorry, but we see enough of that elsewhere these days and I just cannot see it here on my own blog, which I deeply value as my "happy place". Thanks for understanding.

  1. Your blog is my happy place as well. I don't mind hearing your or others' opinions, but as you've said, that's not what I'm here for! I'm here for a diversion from house hunting, economic downturn, organic chemistry tests, and work. Thanks for being there for me, and countless others! ❤

  2. I am fine if you don't use your sight to speak about political issues. I see enough of that on the news and Facebook. I just come here for the deals and reviews!

  3. Thank you for all that you do.
I read your blog daily as a treat, a brain vacation from more serious matters. Beauty products can be a unifier - I can talk lipstick with anyone. Common ground is important, even if that common ground is something like eye shadow palettes and Ulta specials.

  4. 100% agreement and support from me. I'm exhausted by all the fighting and divisiveness and sometimes i just want to talk beauty

  5. I love what you do, and I really would rather see this blog as an island of stability in a sea of uncertainty. I really don't think turning this into a platform for other things is a good idea. Please don't change!

  6. I'm so glad you are choosing to keep your blog a "happy place". I don't feel like you're copping out at all either! It really is a nice escape to come here and only see positivity! Its kind of hard to escape the real world (not only now but all the time lol) so it's very nice to have a community like you've built here G! ❤️

  7. I really appreciate this blog, and check it daily. It's a nice little distraction from the news, politics, protests and menial stresses that happen to all of us in our daily lives. I stay informed of the days going-ons with the news, Facebook, twitter, etc. But boy is it good to just have some place on the internet that I can escape with my brothers and sisters with a love of all things beauty! Thank you for all you do G

  8. Thank you for NOT getting into politics. We all have our own opinions, but sometimes we want to get away from all of that and just talk about makeup! It's a common ground I'm sure we wouldn't have if we decided to throw other stuff into the mix. Thank you and we appreciate all that you do.

  9. Oh wow. Thank goodness. When I first started reading - I was hoping that you would not segue into political rants. I have had to de-friend people on facebook because of that. Makeup and this blog are my diversion. I think diversions are needed and healthy.. Thank you for being considerate to your audience and not derailing this blog into more divisiveness (because no matter which way you sway - it will be opposite of some of your audience members.. therefore, cause division). Thanks, G! (PS - I am surprised some people are wanting you to go that route...??).

  10. I so appreciate your decision to continue as you are . I too come here to receive a welcome distraction if for only a moment or two. You are loved and appreciated ! thank you G

  11. Thanks G! If I wanted to read political posts I will go to those blogs. I appreciate you and your efforts for just allowing me to decompress and be girly for a while.

  12. I love this post because it is something I have been wresting with as well. I have seen a lot of other bloggers take time off because they are so impacted by everything going in the world. I understand that, but I see my beauty blog as not only a diversion for other people, but for myself as well. Playing with all of the colors and creating new looks is my relaxation and escape. Besides, I think we all see enough politics and opinions on Facebook and TV. Lol. I know you hear this a thousand times, but thank you a million times over for all of the hard work you do. You have become my go to blog for new information and for when I just need a little break from the real world.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I completely understand where you're coming from. By not discussing those topics on your blog, it doesn't mean that you don't know or don't care about what's going on. It just means that you're choosing to not let that invade this part of your life. Your blog has become such a breath of fresh air for me when it feels like I can't escape politics anywhere else on the Internet. Keep doing what you're doing, and know that I really appreciate you for it!

  14. Well written Ms.G. Thank you, you provide a great service to the beauty community - shoppers and sellers of all economic levels. Hugs from a fellow mu hoarder

  15. Well said, and thank you for all you do!

  16. I've done that, money that would be spent on cosmetics has been sent (along with money I put aside) to specific charities that mean something to me. A diversion is nice. I'll do my part to push forward change in the world. But I also need and appreciate a few minutes away from the chaos. I agree completely with what you've chosen to do.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you! You are 100% right, this is a diversion. I dont follow beauty vloggers, bloggers, etc. For their political views. I just turn on the t.v., walk out the door, read the paper or facebook and I get more than I want of other peoples opinions! People cant even post their own beliefs or opinions about ANYTHING on their own social media pages without being atracked. I appreciate what all of you do and I am sure most of you give back and help in your own ways, we dont need to hear about it. Keep doing you, it works. If everyone would stop worrying about what other people are doing or not doing and do it themselves, things would be a lot better.

  18. Thank you thank you G! I was really leary about reading this blog post thinking, oh great something else to avoid!!!!! I have drastically cut back on all social media because I am sick and tired of all the hate and nastiness. I have been only reading 2 blogs and regularly since blogs became a thing. You know I have been with you almost from the beginning and like others have loved it and it has carried me though the almost loss of my mother, she fully recovered, and the loss of my dad. Not to mention the horrible 2016 when I lost my job in a field that I worked in for nearly 20 years. I was unemployed most of 2016 and just recently back to work. Not a career job, but it is a pay check! I guesss I just digressed, but your blog has been with me through thick and thin and am happy that it will be with me through this turbulent time and if you had begun to post political or social commentary I would have stopped reading for awhile because it is not what I am coming here for. However if you chose to write another blog with a political, social platform, more power to you!!!! xoxox

    ReplyDelete
  19. Very nicely written, G! I think you're doing the right thing and I appreciate the fact that you won't mix beauty (happiness) with politics (depressing). The world angers me to my core right now but I would prefer to keep the things that bring me joy seperate from the things that bring out the worst in me (anger). Thank you for being a happy distraction!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love your blog & I love that when I come on here it isn't an argument about politics! I get so tired of negativity from both sides that it is nice to not see it at some moments!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I definitely find your blog as a happy place for me. I personally don't mind it as much if the person behind a blog wants to get political, however, I get fired up when a brand or company talks politics. I respect whatever your choice may be, because it's your blog. But, I will say that your blog and Instagram posts have often brought me out of a funk and brought a smile to my face. I appreciate all your hard work!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I completely respect why you're choosing not to share your political beliefs. Personally I don't like when bloggers, youtubers, etc. voice opinions on topics such as politics. Partly, because I read blogs and watch YouTube videos to get away from real life. I already hear about that information when I read a newspaper or watch the news. The biggest reason, though, is because most the time the topic is controversial. By discussing it all you're doing is stirring the pot, causing a lot of people to either be happy or angry. Not to mention that most likely it'll cause a lot of hateful arguments in the comment section. I'm not going to lie, when I clicked on this post I thought "oh great, here we go..." but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I admire the way you've handled this.

    2. Spot on!! It is presumptuous when someone you like to read/watch for entertainment starts commenting on such things as if there is only one correct view.

  23. Well said! And thanks for encouraging us vote and also vote with our dollars.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi G. I admire that you are intelligent & thoughtful enough to consider what your readers want as well as question the legitimacy of a beauty blog. We don't need political discussion here. This is a lovely escape from anger & hatred...this is a lush peony in a bed of weeds. Your enthusiasm & downright fun shared here is a huge day brightener! Love your passion & joy. Thank you for sharing the back story of the blog start; it is a great reminder something good can arise from a heartbreak. Hugs!

  25. I'm perfectly happy with this being a politics-free, safe for everyone place. I get enough of everything else in daily life :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well said! I agree. I have a job and I do not speak my personal beliefs on many topics in my job. It is not the place for it. There are other forums for these other topics.

  27. Your blog is one of my happiest place ever. For me, it is a source of fun, knowledge, and honest opinions. We are all drowned in our everyday life with news and political opinions and I have enough of it. I will say keep our little sanctuary exactly as it is. If you want to discuss other topics, just open another blog. We will have the opportunity then to follow your new venture or not.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thank you for keeping this a current events- and politics-free zone!

  29. Hi G, I love your blog and instagram and follow a lot of beauty bloggers/IG'ers. I love your blog as a diversion, but don't mind if someone I follow wants to stand for something. I will say, it is disconcerting for when there are major issues that affect the country/world going on and all I see is lipstick posts (not talking about you, just instagram in general). Your blog, you do what you want! Thank you for all of your hard work and your thoughtful post.

    ReplyDelete
  30. so well written. You blog is a happy place and I love seeing you every time you pop up on my instagram feed! Thank you for all you do to keep us informed. Shannon

  31. Reading your blog has always been a for me to unwind. There's enough talk about politics on social media, and other blogs. It can be a bit...exhausting at times.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I very much appreciate it! I understand that everyone has their own opinions and it's tough sometimes to not say anything when you have a platform but there are other places to go to for that. I think we all come here for beauty related topics and nothing else. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I appreciate all the work you do to find us bargains. I enjoy reading about makeup, and what is happening in the beauty industry. I think your site is great as is. That said, I think you look at makeup politically, as do many of your readers. (I don't mean in a negative way, I mean you give critical analysis.) We all vote with our dollars & our ballots. I like that you consider your readers who only buy cruelty free products. I like that when you report on industry changes, you mention all the potential implications of a company takeover. I'm glad this blog helped you through a dark time, it is a bright spot for me during dark times.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi G,

Thank you for all your hard work in giving your readers up-to-the-minute bargains! While I am consistently late on reading your blog and thus getting the bargains, I really appreciate it! You are amazing and like most people said, this blog is a happy place!

  35. Thank you for your blog and what you do. I visit every single day and this is probably my first comment. There's so much politics and divisive stuff out there on the internet that if someone really wants that, there are other avenues for it. I love your reviews and deals and the fact that it is real-life free. Your blog makes me happy so thank you for the work you do.

We are free to choose who we read, follow, and admire - and I hope that remains. Those, such as myself, appreciate all the time and effort you put into this blog. Anyone who wants non-stop political discussions have Endless places to read and watch news. Keep your blog true to your intent. Thank you.

  40. Hi G, thank you for your blog! I'm happy I have you and your posts to give me some relief from "real life". I know these are hard times in our country but if we don't have a happy place, we won't be able to overcome all of this. Thank you for your honest reviews, for your "silly" reviews and of course for helping me save so much money ❤

  41. OH THANK YOU GOD! I'm so proud of you -- I think it takes way more guts to stick to your guns as you have done here than to cave in and be yet ANOTHER voice .... I personally can't get away from it -- it's EVERYWHERE! I keep my phone off, I don't watch the news, I feel trapped in every day life and THANK YOU so much for you keeping it real ... right here, on this blog! You are my hero!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. What a relief!!! This is a beauty blog. If I want to read about current events, there are more than enough other options available to fill that need. There are some blogs/Instagram accounts I've stopped following because, even if I agree with them, I did not follow them to hear about politics, I followed them to see flowers or nail art or read about makeup or home design.

So glad you decided to keep this blog focused on beauty. Thank you.

  43. Hi G. <3 tysm for helping me save the money that I don't have! It truly is a blessing to find someone who gets as excited as I do about getting products on a good deal. I, like many other of your readers, respect that you want to keep your blog as nonpartisan as possible, and I am proud to be a fan of a beauty blogger who does not disrespect other beauty influencers for choosing to speak out on behalf of their political views. I wish you well

  45. Thank you! I really appreciate your decision to keep your blog posts about the blog's intended purpose. It' nice to be able to just relax and enjoy your blog. There is so much negative energy around the internet already. It's good to have a safe and happy place. :-)

  47. G for President!!! 😍
Thank you. Thank you for this post. I think you are brave, intelligent, and wise beyond your years just for putting this post out there. This blog is my lifeline to disconnect from the bs of every day...well, bs. Lol. Keep it up! Glad you're finally feeling better, btw. I lurk a lot, this is actually my first post on here. I felt like if I was ever going to post a comment, I had to say something in support of this one.

  48. I consider this blog my makeup community. We all have one thing in common: a passion for makeup. I've been reading this blog for several years now and it is just what you said: a welcome respite from the ups and downs of life. I have no one in my life who shares my passion for makeup so this blog is my sounding board. You all understand the thrill of getting a good deal or the giddiness you feel when a new LE collection comes out. I don't know any of you personally but we are all connected and that's what I love about this blog. Thank you G for keeping it a safe haven for us. We truly appreciate it. \m/ Rock on my friend!

  49. Thank you for this post. I know I enjoy watching for and reading your posts. It is a "happy place" for any savvy makeup addict! It is becoming increasingly harder to find such places online. We appreciate your calm in a sadly crazy world. Keep it up, G!!

  50. Thank you! I am a grown woman and have my own opinions. I don't need to see political stuff everywhere I look. I enjoy coming here for deals and reviews. Keep up the great job! I appreciate it!

  51. I have read your blogs for a long time, but I never posted a comment. But I want to say Thank you so much, if I want to hear about political statements and opinions, they are everywehere you read and look! I applaud you for keeping this a neutral zone for people who just love makeup and a good deal!

    ReplyDelete
  52. I agree with and completely support your decision. There are a LOT of places to go to discuss, argue, scream into the void about all kinds of issues. Your blog/IG is not one of those places, and I am so very grateful for that! We all need an oasis, an escape, from all the noise and stress that is life. That's what you provide. I believe there is something very good, even noble, in providing that calm in the storm we all need. Thank you for doing what you do!

    ReplyDelete
  53. The previous commenters have pretty much already said what I would have, so I'll keep this short and sweet. Very well said and I agree with you 100%.

  54. G, I read your blog every day and I am so thankful for all the hard work you put into it. I'm glad you addressed the issue of politics, as it's never been a more important subject in our country in recent years. But as others have stated, there are plenty of places to discuss those things. Your blog gives me a welcome escape from all of that, so thank you!

  55. G, I am so thankful for all the hard work you do. I read your blog every day but this is the first time I'm posting. I agree with all the others that this is a welcome place to go to escape from all the politics. As important as politics are, especially now, there are plenty of other places to discuss it. Thank you for making this a much-needed "happy place" we can go to!

  57. I've been looking at your blog almost daily for the last year, there is no blog like yours as far I'm concerned. Thank you for making it, I appreciate the time and dedication that you put into this. I don't think that a beauty blog is a place to come to for world events and strong political agendas. I do love how you wrote this post though. I think most of us who come here are looking for a momentary escape. Anyhow, I just wanted to say - I think that you are great.

    ReplyDelete
  58. At first, when I started reading your post, I was kind of hoping you'd mention something about the current political environment. But then, I started going through the comments and I realized this is one of the few places on the internet where everyone is kind and respectful and just wants to save some money! It's so rare to find a comments thread where everyone just gets along.

So thank you, G, for everything you do! 😊

  61. Good. We need places to get away from the "real world," and it's gotten very hard to keep things from bleeding over. This is your site, and only you are in charge of the content. Don't let others who think they can police the internet get to you.

    ReplyDelete
  62. So glad to hear you'll be keeping your site free of politics and world affairs. Often like to visit to escape all that. Thanks again for all you do.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thank you for writing this. I've been frustrated lately by how some beauty bloggers/youtubers have been ignoring the political climate lately, and I thought about it and it wasn't that I wanted them to "come out" with certain views or on a certain side- it's that I wanted them to acknowledge that there are serious, crazy things happening in the world right now. We all appreciate having that escape and time to think about more frivolous things, so your role in providing that is hugely important- but it's also important to recognize that it can seem like the world is ending outside! So thank you

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi G! I have been following you for a while now and I have enjoyed your blog. You are an escape with frivolous seeming things like makeup. With that said, what seems frivolous to one person is not frivolous to another. I respect you for not commenting, because you have always been pretty private about your personal life. Every so often, you give us little inklings about your personal life on Instagram, about your candy cravings, new Lays potato chip flavors, restaurant visits, and the sweet things you and your boyfriend do for each other (so precious). Anyway, not that my opinions is so hefty, but I understand you not want to open that Pandora's box about politics on your blog that also represents your workplace. If there is a need, I'm sure you'll figure it out on another channel like Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. This is all a creative decision that only you can make. Lots of love and support.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I just want to say thank you. I enjoy reading everything you post, and all your efforts. I appreciate it so much.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thank you! Not just because you're great at what you do but for also for your insightfulness. I appreciate your position and it gives me great relief to know this will remain a wonderful place to enjoy some truly fun aspects of my daily life.

    ReplyDelete
  67. OMG! I'd be devastated if this became a forum for politics or world events. I have panic/anxiety disorder and I have to shelter myself for sanity. Facebook has become a nightmare.
On the other hand, makeup makes me happy. A new lipstick makes me powerful. Maybe I'm nuts (actually, it's likely), but I can be a mature person who does deal with the world but doesn't wish to roll into the arguments that no one wins. The arguing effects no change. So please please please, don't change the blog.
I read it so many times a day it's nuts. I check it at 6:am before work, during the day, when I get home, and before bed. It makes me happy to find deals and know I'm not the only one that finds joy in the more lighthearted things.

    However, foundation is serious business.

Thanks G for all you do!

  68. This too is my happy place. I mean how many other blogs tell u how to seek the little joys in life anddd help u save money doing it. :) it's actually confusing at times to see bloggers and vloggers create amazing content and then once they speak out, for or against something, all of a sudden they're the bad guy.

  72. I discovered you thru the Lipstick League less than a year ago and now I'm happliy addicted to y9ur site (and Beautygeeks) 😛 I was laid off in Jan. First time not having a job and it's weird. Talking about makeup allows me to escape real life and we do need an escape. I've deleted Facebook and all other social media because of the hate speak. Makeup, HGTV and DIY Network are keeping me sane. I love your reviews and Imake a list of stuff I want to try when I run out of my current products.

My hope and prayer is that we will love and respect each and find our holy grail foundation and lipstick shades! 💄💓💗.

  73. Honestly, I am super grateful for this! There is so much bickering elsewhere (and if you started on intense topics bickering would no doubt ensue) that this is such a nice place to escape all of that for a little while. I appreciate all your hard work and I love that you try to look for ways to improve and grow without detriment to your followers. Sending love and happiness your way, be well.... Cat

  74. WTF? I can't even image the feedback that you've received that inspired this post. I'll say that I totally seeakeuo and beauty as an escape and I've never thought about politics when coming to your website. Thank you for all that you do.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Adding in political discourse or soapbox speech would not in anyway improve your wonderful blog! Let you be you and keep doing what we all enjoy so much. Frankly I get enough of that in other aspects of my life.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm happy you are choosing to stay out of politics and stick to the happy place. I follow people in the beauty community not for the political stance. If I want to see or read that I will follow them on a personal level. I don't feel this is a cop out. I feel like this is a smart move. Plus this is a business and you need to protect it

    ReplyDelete
  77. 100% support you and truly glad you made this decision!

  78. THANK you for not caving in to the demand to politicize everything! I use this as a diversion; I work with politics, etc. all freaking day, and the last thing I want to see when I'm thinking about highlighter is yet another reminder about how horribly politicized everything is these days (and how the culprits want to beat you up for not engaging in politics 24/7 - meaning THEIR kind of politics.)

Thank you for keeping this a cherished respite from a world rapidly going to hell!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thank you! You do know your audience!

  80. G, I'm always (and will continue) to be grateful for all of your posts. <3 <3 <3

  81. My heart plummeted when I read the topic, thinking "NO! Please don't ruin this place for me!" I almost didn't even read it because I didn't want to feel anger about this blog that I visit every single day for the latest in beauty info and sales. But I did read it because it nagged me. THANK YOU, G, for maintaining this fun, girly, place of us, devoid of politics. I have enough of that surrounding me on other social media.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wow G, I think I teared up while reading this. The main reason why I adore your blog is because there is no hate/negativity. Like someone else mentioned there is so much of that elsewhere. I am totally grateful just to read and comment about make up/beauty deals. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Thank you for staying in your lane. That is why I am a frequent visitor. The events of the day are everywhere and can be overwhelming. I know where to go to see and hear about the days events. Here I need to know about a nice bronzer that is cool enough for my light tan skin. Thanks.

  84. Yet another huge, heartfelt thank you for keeping this blog's focus right where it is. I'm one of those folks who could have easily written that sample email above, and I NEED places that bring me joy and fun and take me out of the surreality that has taken over much of my life for my very sanity. I've said thanks before and I'll say it again because I am grateful beyond what I can express.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I don't understand why people would think you should comment about politics. If I want to read about politics I'll go to a political site. I like to read about makeup and that's what I enjoy your blog for. Thank you for keeping it that way. We don't need to make everything in life about taking sides.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Well said! Escape, diversion, distraction, haven, sanctuary, happy place -- your blog is all that and more. Thank you for all you do!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Thank you for staying focused on your vision for your blog. It's encouraging to read other comments that express similar feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I'm SO GRATEFUL you're not going to talk politics & current events on this blog. TBH if you did I would have to stop reading--which would suck bc I read this at LEAST once/day. But I get enough news when I read the news. And enough discussion IRL & online elsewhere. This blog is my fantasy. My fun. My escape into things I love. So thanks. Keep being awesome :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. I legit go to this blog as an escape...I have so much stuff going on right now, I need something like this to blow off steam. I hope that my visits to your blog are helping you in any way! I have been reading for quite a few years now (probably since around 2012?) and I gotta say, thanks for everything G!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Thank you, G. I need a lot of escapism because pretty much everything in my life is hard and chaotic and not getting any better any time soon.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Sometimes when I'm following someone on YT for beauty or whatever escapism, they will comment on current events, and their opinion isn't my opinion and then I feel differently about that person.
I love to come here and just do girly, its fun, easy and informative as to what's going on in that world. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Stay true to your guidelines, it is keeping us sane in this world. Music, design, film, science should be neutral to politics but it is not this days, so your little island of beauty products is very necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  93. You have stated why I follow your blog (well one of the reasons). It is an escape and a place just to let my mind rest from the turmoil in my daily life. Thank you for your blog and your decision to continue your content in the same vein.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I have to say that I agree with keeping your blog politics free. I am currently a bit obsessed with politics, an so my FB feed is full of those kind of articles. Some of the other blogs I follow (parenting, women's issues) have been posting more political posts lately, and although I agree politically, it is causing controversy among readers. THere's no need to mix up politics with lipstick. If you wanted to talk about animal testing, natural products and things like that, that is more of a natural fit, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I love that your blog really is like an escape. Facebook, instagram, everythod it seems is so politically charged right now and sometimes it's so nice to just give your mind and emotions a break! To be able to come read a blog where everyone has something in common seems like some much needed neutral ground! Thanks G.

    ReplyDelete
  96. You sure are my 'happy place'. Even though you have got me to spend more money than I should on beauty stuff (wink, wink), I take the time in the morning to read anything new on your blog. Keep doin' what your doin', Girlfriend!! Your blog is part of my EVERY DAY routine. You mean a LOT to me!! <3

    ReplyDelete
  97. You are doing a great job, G, please keep up the good work!

Also, remember how you used to do tons of wet n wild swatches? I miss those. Inexpensive cruelty free makeup for the win!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I agree. Its a total escape for me. I don't even want to get on FB anymore because every single post that all my "friends" make is so political. I never discuss politics on FB because I know I'll never change anyone's mind and why waste my breath.( I'm with her though!!).

As far as voting with my dollar re: makeup. I'll NEVER purchase a Jeffree Star product because I do not like that person and I do NOT agree with how he conducts himself.

    ReplyDelete
  99. This gives me a quick escape from real life; I get to enter a world of makeup and play and fun. While you have a great platform for standing up and speaking out, I do appreciate that here I can focus on just one thing - beauty. It is a nice place to come to after a hard day and see the obvious work and dedication you have to this expansive topic.

    ReplyDelete
  100. It's like when you're counting on that delicious consistency of a Starbucks drink and suddenly a barista butchers your order because they didnt follow the exact measurements, like cmon I come here expecting it to taste perfectly the same each time! Your consistency on the topic of steals and deals is the reason I come back each and everyday and I am so glad it will continue to remain that way!

    ReplyDelete
  101. G, you gotta do what makes you happy. You give so much to us, each and everyday and I'm happy to hear that it's a good distraction for you from all that can weigh a person down, but I hope you will never feel as if you owe us any of your happiness. People are always going to want what they want, but you gotta keep doing what makes you happy. whatever that is. Thankfully right now, that's helping up all be a little happier and a little better at keeping to our makeup budgets. Sending thanks and hugs!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Thank you for not talking politics. I agree with some of the other comments, I get bombarded with political views and news on facebook, twitter, and other media. I visit this blog to hear about honest views on beauty products. I am a junkie and need this blog to keep me from spending my hard earned money on every new product that hits the shelves. I appreciate this blog keeping it about beauty. Please continue to keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I personally would prefer politics be kept out of a beauty blog. I come here for lipstick and nail polish swatches and question of the week and new product alerts, etc. Politics is everywhere, and opinions even more so. I like the idea of voting with your wallet, though.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Honestly, if you started talking politics, I would not read your blog again. It's not the place for politics. And yes, you are correct about writing something regarding world or U.S. affairs and than writing about the new Target beaut box would look silly. We all have our opinions, but here, we all love beauty. Actually, it makes me sad you even had to write about this. This is a feel good site. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Nope. I don't want to hear anything political from the beauty bloggers I follow. I read you as an escape. Please keep it that way!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. I never really comment, but I do check your blog everyday and sometimes multiple times a day. My Facebook is constantly being bombarded with news and politics and I need a break from it all. I'm not turning a blind eye to the hatred in the world, but there's only so much of it one can take a day. Beauty and makeup is my release from it all and I appreciate not having politics intermingled. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you put into your corner of the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  107. You are part of my "happy place"! I love that I know that I have the option of reading your blog & several other beauty blogs as a way to escape the realities of real life. Life can be hard, sometimes for long stretches at a time. I know you've had your own share of difficulties through the years. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into your blog. I know it is time consuming & a labor of love for you! Sometimes I need a quick pick me up & coming to your blog to find out about a new lipstick, gloss, etc. that can give me a little boost but not break the bank is what I need. Keep on keeping on G!

    ReplyDelete
  108. I too come to this blog as a frivolous and fun 'escape' from the real world. I work full time and have a lot of other responsibilities in my life, and honestly, beauty/makeup blogs and YouTube makeup videos are my escape from that. If I want politics I'll watch the news or listen to a political commentator (not a beauty blogger or YT “guru” – no offense). If I want to discuss or debate politics, I'll go elsewhere. So I'm personally thankful that you are not turning this blog into a political diatribe. I actually deleted my membership on reddit and a couple of other beauty communities because they were being turned into political battlegrounds. Something simple as a question about which mascara to buy would end up in an insult-filled, name-calling fight over politics. IMHO makeup and beauty can be very unifying. People of all colors and races can enjoy talking about blush and lipstick, and especially in today’s society, I think we all need a ‘happy place’ to take a break from things. I want to thank you for keeping your blog true to makeup, and giving us a place to escape.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I love your blog, and look forward to reading it daily so I can escape into the fun world a beauty. It's a wonderful break from the from negativity that seems to be permeating everything right now. Thank you for the time, energy, and obvious love you put into your blog!!!

    ReplyDelete
  110. Eek people SERIOUSLY asked you to weigh in on politics and world affairs on your beauty blog?! I'm sorry but that is incredibly tacky and I am SO glad that the few blogs that I do follow, are not talking about any of that! There is enough on FB if people want to see more. Quite honestly, I have no interest in knowing where you stand on that stuff and I know you don't have any interest about where I stand. Let us unite in our love for makeup, skincare, hair products, and anything beauty related AND keep it at that! Love your site - please don't change a thing =)

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thank you! You view is a breath of fresh air.

  112. Although I love to have a little escape from the real world. I also love to know the blogs I support also support people like me. As a first generation American who is a WOC and part of the LGBT community, I need a little transparency on who supports who. I honestly think you're one of them G, thank goodness! There are plenty bloggers, youtubers, Instagramers that I've dropped because to them this "thing" that's going on is overdramatic or just silly. It's a real thing that's scary and very much affecting my family day to day. So yes thank you for being a distraction, but there is nothing wrong with taking a stance. In fact I've made it a point to frequent those blogs and links I know support me and people like me.

  113. G,

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for your blog and everything you do to put it together, and thank you for making the decision that you did.

    ReplyDelete
  114. We don't need to hear political beliefs everywhere I think we are allowed some relief and positive outlets right now! Regardless of beliefs I think everyone is aching right now! Love you and take care

    ReplyDelete
  115. Thank you, G for being a beautiful escape (no pun intended;)). I fully respect your decision and applaud your encouragement to everyone to support worthwhile causes that they believe in. Bless you and keep doing YOU.

    ReplyDelete
  116. My first post ever! I felt moved to speak my mind on this. Thank you so much for NOT getting into political topics. I come here to read your reviews & heads up on deals. Too much political discussion every where you turn, IMO Thanks for keeping this a safe, friendly place. 💓 your blog just like it is!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I don't comment often and I've written and erased this several times, so here goes. I just want to put out there that at some point, politics is personal and while I completely respect your vision for your blog and I support you doing and writing about whatever you like on your space, I was somewhat dismayed by this line in your post: "As much as I sometimes want to shout from the rooftops about the events of the day, I am respecting your wishes and the very reason you come to this blog in the first place.". If you want to write about something important to you, please don't self censor for fear that we don't want to hear it. I only know you through the medium of the internet, but you're like a friend and I certainly wouldn't want a friend silence herself just because we traditionally only discuss make up and beauty products. There are times for distraction and times for openness and friends listen with kindness to both. Thanks for all you do, G.

  118. Thank you for being our "silly" escape. God bless.

  119. Dear G,
I've been following your blog from almost the beginning. I remember when I stumbled upon it, how excited I was. There wasn't anything like it (and this fact STILL remains so to this day, in my opinion). Since then, I've been through a lot and you've shared some of your own personal ups and downs too and I so appreciate you for that. The amount of dedication and effort you put into each post is so obvious. Through your blog, it feels like we are going through these ups and downs of life together. I just got out of surgery yesterday and opened up your blog and it immediately made me excited to see the latest posts. It took me out of the trauma of the whole ordeal. What you do is not "silly" or "trivial." You touch people's lives. You give them a positive and loving space to go and enjoy themselves. You put so much time, energy and effort in your blog. You've replied to every single question or comment I've left, so I know how hard you work at it and how much you love it. I realize we don't know each other, but from what I've gathered over the years of reading your blog, you are a very kind and loving person. I don't think anything you say, whatever stance you take would offend anyone. I respect whatever decision you make for your blog, because it is your creation. It's your voice and I support your freedom of opinion. I just wanted to take the time to let you know how grateful and appreciative I am for your dedication and passion for your blog. It is truly inspiring to me and I'm sure many others. Keep following your passion. You are awesome! Much Love and Peace! :)

    -Sarah

P.S. Sorry for my overbabble. I think I'm still a bit loopy from the surgery meds lol.

  120. Thanku a million times over. I completely agree with all u have to say. Yes this is my escape and the beauty world will continue to be and IM SO GLAD I DONT HAVE TO THINK ANOUT THE WORLD OR POLITICS ON HERE. I probably wouldn't read it anyway. I stay as far away from it as I can. I do what I can and leave the rest behind. I have enough daily problems. UR THE BEST G.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Thanks for your very thoughtful post and suggestions. I unfollowed quite a few accounts recently due to their negative posts. I don't follow these accounts for their political opinion and don't want to support accounts that aren't considerate of their audience. I'd prefer to see people trying to initiate change through positive actions and thoughts which is one reason I appreciate your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Thank you! Frankly, I'd rather read your blog instead of stress eat! Not only is your writing informative, it's fun and a fantastic escape from the crazy that is everyday life. Love your blog, love you--thank you a thousand times over!❤️

    ReplyDelete
  123. Well said, G! Long-time reader, first time commenter. This is the best budget beauty blog on the Internet, hands down. It would stink to ruin that with politics. Thank you for keeping a good thing intact and not giving into silly requests to start politicizing thus safe space.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I have to say that the people and sites that have been showing support in their own ways is extremely comforting. The only people that have the ability to not care are the people who will be least effected by having someone with white nationalist/ supremacist in the white house- with everything that viewpoint entails for ethnic, gender, and religious minorities (and those that fraternize with them.) it's like the meme of the dog that says everything is fine while his house is burning down. To me it is more awkward and dangerous to ignore.

I understand that this is a niche website. You have a very specific area that you cover. However, I've seen other niche sites cover what is going on as it relates to the websites area.

One thing that you could do is cover which places we shop find themselves on boycott list... there's suppose to be a day of boycotting to stand up for all our brothers and sisters being denied their rights- alert your readers to that in case they don't want to impede. Maybe do a post reasonably priced products owned by different minority groups- again ethnic, religious, lgbtq, ect.

There's a challenge for doing an entire face using products solely from black owned products. Try that- expand on it to other groups. If you want to do it, there you can do it in a way that doesn't pretend like there is not an assault on a portion of your own readership AND remain true to the spirit and concept of the blog we all enjoy.

When I was growing up in Germany, this hung on my wall in elementary school and it always stuck with me:

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

-Never stay silent, so long as you have a voice. It is not guaranteed that privilege will always exist for you or anyone else.
