Review: NEW Burt's Bees Vanilla Honey Soy Wax Melts (plus: Photos of the New Burt's Bees Candles)

Did you know that there's a new Burt's Bees home fragrance line of candles and wax melts? I sure didn't, until I spotted it at a local Walmart last week. If this is news to you, I have pics of the entire collection, plus a review of one of the new Soy Wax Melts for you today.

NEW Burt's Bees Soy Wax Melts in Vanilla Honey

Keep reading for my review, plus pics of the candles in this new range...

PLEASE NOTE: This new line of candles and melts is NOT made by Burt's Bees. Burt's Bees licensed the use of their name and logo to a company called MVP Group International. MVP Group International makes these candles with permission by Burt's Bees (according to their website, they also make candles for Febreeze and Bliss, with similar licensing agreements). MVP also has their own candle brands, which include Colonial Home and other brands you're probably familiar with (all of which you can view HERE).

MVP Group International has a website for the new Burt's Bees home fragrance collection HERE, but it isn't fully up and running as of the time of this post.

The candles and melts in this collection are made of soy wax. There are large jar candles ($8.97), candle tins ($3.97), 2-wicks (sorry, those might be 3-wicks, I forgot to check) for $7.97, small jar candles ($4.97) and wax melts ($2.97 for 7 melts).

Each product listed above comes in the following scents:

Toasted Almond
Vanilla Honey
Hibiscus Bloom
Eucalyptus Mint
Tropical Mango
Herb Garden Citrus
Ruby Grapefruit
Cucumber Melon
Birch Bark
Lavender Fields

There may have been a few more (for some reason I think there's a rose fragrance I'm forgetting about here).

A closer look at the small jar candles...

So now let's get on to this review!

NEW Burt's Bees Soy Wax Melts in Vanilla Honey
(retail: $2.97, 2.5 oz - 7 melts per container)

Full disclosure: I am a wax melt fanatic. I found these only because they were located right next to my favorite Better Homes & Gardens and ScentSationals wax melts at Walmart. I have melted hundreds of wax melts in my life (my obsession began in the late 1990s) from mainstream brands like Yankee Candle, to popular indie etailers like Candles from the Keeping Room, to "made in my kitchen" sellers on eBay. I do not discriminate when it comes to wax melts, but I am also very picky after years and years of using them.

The first thing I noticed about these Burt's Bees Soy Wax Melts was the adorable honeycomb design. I love that each melt comes together to form a honeycomb pattern--how cute is that?

Made in USA with US & foreign components

Each individual melt is not that large (roughly the same size as a standard tea light) and I can easily fit two melts in my standard, traditional tart warmer (I am old-school and I use a warmer that requires tea lights. I just prefer that method over electric plug-in warmers).

Breaking apart and getting a melt out of the packaging isn't too hard, but it is a bit messy since the wax is quite soft.

Since the wax is soft, these melts melt very quickly, which I love. Unfortunately, the scent I chose, Vanilla Honey, doesn't have as strong of a throw as I prefer. I primarily use wax melts in my downstairs living area, and I love when they scent my entire living area and dining area (not a large area, by the way). I first added just one melt (the one you see above) to my warmer and after 15 minutes, I had to be within a three-foot-radius of my warmer to be able to really get a good whiff. My boyfriend said he could occasionally smell it from across the room, but that it was very, very subtle. I eventually added a second melt to my warmer, but I'm afraid that didn't really intensify the throw (I could smell it a little bit more with two melts, but it still wasn't strong enough for me personally).

Now this could very well be an issue just with this particular scent. Vanilla-based fragrances are notoriously weak in candles and melts, so I would image that a scent like Lavender Fields would probably have a stronger throw.

As for the fragrance itself, it's quite lovely and unique. On cold sniff, I get a very nice whiff of honey (almost like a raw clover honey) with a faint citrus note and lots of warm vanilla (more like vanilla bean, actually). But when melted, things change considerably and, to my nose, this scent morphs into what I can only describe as "peach skin." You know when you wash a fresh peach and you inhale the scent of the clean peach skin? That's very much what this melt reminds me of when it melts. Lovely, but not what I was expecting!

Additional thoughts: If you like melts that have a subtle throw, or you're using them for small spaces like a bathroom, guest bedroom, dorm room or studio apartment, then this might be a nice choice. Just be prepared for the scent to change a bit on you--it definitely smells different to me when it's melting vs. how it smells on cold sniff. But if you were hoping to scent a large room with these, I'm afraid you might be a bit disappointed in this particular scent. I would consider trying another scent like Lavender Fields or Eucalyptus Mint, and hopefully you'll have better luck.

So far, I have only seen this new line at Walmart. And just in case you missed this at the top of my post:

    1. Yep. Considering that Yankee melts are $2 for one melt, and I haven't been all that happy with the throw on those lately, this is a nice value if other scents have a stronger throw than Vanilla Honey! :)

  2. I thought this was a waxy kind of hand cream. Like the their cuticle cream but bigger =P hopefully soon.

  3. So these are new, interesting...I found two beat up looking large eucalyptus mint jar candles at Walmart a few wks ago. They were on the shelf w all the other BB's items and no sign of a price (now I know it's bc they didn't belong there, I guess.) I was taking one to the price checker when I noticed the cap wasn't snapping back on, just kept popping off so I just brought it back to where I found it and gave up. They were dusty and the milk glass like jar had black scuffs all over making it look like it was from the yr of the flood so I was actually thinking that these were from looooong ago and I just never saw them around. I didn't care for the problematic lid and would prefer a screw type one instead, but would still like to sniff the herbal garden citrus, birch bark, and lavender varities.

    1. The lid can be a pain but the eucalyptus mint is the best especially if you want a strong scent. It went up 3 stories in my house

  4. I'm not a big wax melt fan, but I am really into scented candles. I'm thinking of picking up the Eucalyptus Mint one and see how it compares to the BBW one (my fave). If it's good, I might more of the Burt's Bee's candle since it's more affordable.

  5. I heard that these don't have a very good throw. Plus I didn't like any of them on cold sniff. I'll stick to BHG and ScentSationals. I'm new to wax melts but I've accumulated a huge collection in a short amount of time (just like I did with nail polish).

  6. Are these 100% soy, G? I'm getting away from the BBW candles due to the paraffin and petrochemicals. Love the blog!

  7. I'm a huge wax fanatic too. CFTKR is my favorite vendor. That said, I love Walmart wax too...BH&G has some great, strong scents. I've tried two of the Burt's Bees melts...Ruby Grapefruit and Sweet Lemon. I was very impressed with the grapefruit...it's quite strong and realistic. The lemon one was disappointing...not strong at all. A lot of people that I've talked to have complained about strength issues as well. Have you tried BH&G's Sugared Lavender Twist? It smells just like Pink Sugar to me, with a hint of lavender.

  8. Ooh, I will definitely be on the lookout for these. I prefer old school tea light burners to the electric warmers too. It seems like it has become almost impossible to find non-electric warmers now though. If anyone knows of good places to find tea light warmers, I'd love to hear them. I could use a new one. I have one from Yankee that's terrible. They used to make nice, simple, cute, useful warmers, but now it seems like the only non-electric ones they have are weird and elaborate and made out of delicate and/or hard to clean materials. I just want a basic ceramic warmer in a color other than white.

  9. These do NOT work!!!!!! total waste of your money... I bought several different scents and I'm so disappointed. ughhh

  10. I bought the eucalyptus mint scent and I loved it while it lasted which was only for about an hour. So I added another melt but it didn't do very much at all. I was disappointed and I will not buy these again. I feel it was a waste of my money and it is a shame because the eucalyptus mint combo was very nice while it lasted, which I will point out again, was not very long. It also leaves a residue in my warmer which I do not like.

    1. The candle is better and last longer in the eucalyptus mint. The throw went throughout my house.

  11. I brought home the Market Pear wax yesterday. The wax is soft and very crumbly. Although it smelled good in the package, I can't smell anything when I put it in the warmer. I have in three cubes and am sitting right beside it and can't smell a thing! It was a waste of money.

  12. Do these start to have that horrid wax smell after a while?

  13. I love the smell of the sweet lemon wax melts in this line, but it's just too subtle for my purposes, also five dollars(!) at our Target. Won't buy these again but might try the eucalyptus mint if I see it cheap.

  14. I recently purchased pine cone and cinnamon wax melts. I was very disappointed with this product. I like a medium to heavy scent not to mention cinnamon. I put 2 in my warmer and I couldn't smell it at all. I will not purchase this product again and stick to my favorite scentsy products.

  15. Too bad you can't find the ingredients in these candles anywhere on the web, including burtsbees.com.

Don't trust these "natural" candles. They have a metal base for the wick (which emits poisonous fumes into the air), and for all we know they have 49% paraffin in them (they can still label it "Pure Soy Candle" so long as they have 51% soy in it).

It's a shame that a company called Burt's Bees doesn't have bees wax candles, which purify the air through ionization, and can dramatically reduce symptoms of allergies and asthma.

This is just Burt's Bees selling out instead of making a transparently quality candle. It started as a good company, but that's what happens in our culture.

  16. I was really into this for a while. Are this candles 100% soy? Thanks for sharing!!
