NEW Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Mauve Over: Get Marsala-tized for $2.99!

I'm sure that most of us need only to look within our own nail polish stashes to find a Marsala-type shade. The Pantone 2015 Color of the Year is really just a brownish-mauve that, quite frankly, wasn't really in fashion in the world of nail polish...until this year. I have plenty of brownish-mauve cremes lurking deep in the drawers of my polish collection, and most haven't seen the light of day in years.

But dusting those old polishes off didn't seem quite as fun to me, so when I saw a Marsala-esque shade in the new-for-2015 Sally Hansen Xtreme Wears at my local Rite Aid recently, that baby came straight home with me.

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Nail Color in Mauve Over
New Permanent Shade
(retail: $2.99, 0.40 oz)

I realize that in some areas, and depending on the retailer, Xtreme Wears can retail for $4 or more, but I've seen them as low as $2.49 at Target, so I used $2.99 as the median price.

Keep reading for some swatches...

Below are some swatches taken in bright, regular and low lighting. I used two coats of Mauve Over and no top coat for these photos:

I had absolutely no issues with Mauve Over. It's one of those signature Sally Hansen cremes that has a great consistency (not too thin, not too thick), and it rolls onto the nails like butter. Dry-time was good for both coats and this polish dried to a nice, shiny finish.

I realize there are a zillion Marsala-esque nail color shades to choose from at the drugstores, beauty supply stores, etc., but if you like the Xtreme Wear formula (which you know I do), I think this is a great choice.

Do you own any Marsala-type nail colors? If so, what are some of your favorites?

  1. That polish looks so pretty against your skin tone. I know I have some marsala-type polishes in my stash, but none come to mind.

    1. Oh my gosh, thank you SO much, Heidi! :) And yeah, I have so many old polishes in this color family that I haven't worn in years, but it was fun to buy a new one!

  2. What an elegant color!! I may have to pick this one up! I have matching lipcolors already too. You're so right... This wasn't really a fashionable color again until now! I personally think it's classic and very elegant, very ladylike!

    1. Yes! I agree about it being elegant. I'm glad it's back in vogue because it's such an easy color to wear and goes with everything. Totally reminds me of the polish that Molly Ringwald wore in The Breakfast Club. :)

But what's funny is that my boyfriend keeps saying, "Why are you wearing such an old fashioned color on your nails?" whenever I wear this. They just don't get it... Lol.

    2. Oh, it does remind me of Molly Ringwald's nails in BC!

  3. Ooh great swatches! This looks great on you! The old Milani polish "Mauve Medley" seems to be dupe for the Sally Hansen one. I'd probably prefer it to SH just because I generally like the formula better! :)

  4. SH CSM in Plum's the Word is also similar, a tiny bit more brown. And a 1-coater ;) I think it's interesting how Marsala is being interpreted so broadly, and it's flattering on so many skintones as a lip color, on nails, eyes, blush, everywhere!

  5. My two marsala colors are Sally Hansen CSM in Rupee Red which is on the dark side and then Zoya Coco, which seems similar to Mauve Over. I'll have to pick this one up and compare! I'm half Korean and feel like marsala looks nice against my skin tone so I'm pretty happy with the color of the year!

    1. That is so funny. I found Vacation Time in my purge pile from last year, as I thought it was such an old fashioned color. It is now back in my stash. Fashion is so cyclical.

  10. Love this! I really like SC Vacation Time, too. Also, I picked up Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in "So Much Fawn" on clearance today at Kroger, and it seems to fall in this color range, as well. By the way, the best price I've found on Extreme Wear is at Kroger, $2.34.

  12. I have to say while I haven't had time to shop my stash, I really don't think I have anything close to this so I will be on the lookout for it! Your photos look so tempting G! I miss your NP pics!

  14. These kinds of colors look terrible on my skintone, so I'm skipping this year again (last year was no good for me either). Maybe next year!

I like a lot of their color picks for spring though. Fourteen inches over the weekend! C'mon spring!

  16. This isn't quite "marsala-y" IMO because to me marsala is a bit...spicier? Like, redder/more intense, maybe - just because 1. the name itself makes me think of a redder/deeper color and 2. in my memory the Pantone color swatch is redder/deeper. That being said, I quite like this color both in general and on you, haha. Totally agreed about the Molly Ringwald look :)
