First Look: NEW Alberto VO5 Pure Sunshine Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner (Fan Voted Fragrance)

I know that a lot of us are fans of VO5 around here. In addition to using their shampooos and conditioners in the traditional way, I know that many of you like to use their conditioners for co-washing (several of their formulas don't contain silicones, which I know is important to some of you who co-wash OR use shampoo/conditioner in the traditional way). And you just can't beat the price, right?

If you're a VO5 fan, did you know that there was a month-long program called "A Scent is Born" which allowed fans to vote on the next fragrance in the Vo5 line? There were eight different candidates, and the Pure Sunshine came out on top. Pure Sunshine actually launched in January, but I haven't seen it locally in any of my drugstores yet. If you haven't seen it yet either, here's a closer look!

NEW Alberto VO5 Silky Experiences Pure Sunshine Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner
(retail: around $1.99 each, 12.5 oz)

I received both the shampoo and conditioner from VO5, so if you'd like my opinion of both, keep reading...

I've used both the shampoo and conditioner about a dozen times so far, and I think that they both perform just as well as other VO5 formulas I own. There was nothing dramatically different or shocking about how my hair looked after using these (compared to other VO5 formulas). The shampoo does a nice job of cleansing my hair without leaving it feeling too dry or brittle, and the condiitoner provides some light hydration. This isn't a conditioner I would reach for if my hair was very in need of moisture--it's light (just like most VO5 conditioners) which makes it quite suited for co-washing. I think that if you usually use VO5 conditioners for co-washing, you'll probably like this one too. I also tried using these products for reverse-washing and I liked the results. My hair was lighter, bouncier and had a bit more body after reverse-washing.

But the most excting thing, to me, about these new products is the fragrance. Per VO5, the scent of Pure Sunshine is described as:
Fresh and clean, with delicate notes of pacific rose apple, white peony and cashmere wood...
Though not listed in the description above, I do get some citrus notes here as well (orange and little bit of lemon). Overall, this is definitely a fresh, clean fragrance that has a bit of sweetness to it. I think it's a nice addition to the VO5 family.

As I mentioned at the top of this post, Pure Sunshine is out now (you can purchase it online at drugstore.com) so keep an eye out for it your local drugstores, grocery stores and big box stores.

If you've already tried Pure Sunshine, I'd love to hear from you! What do YOU think of the scent?

  1. Wish i'd known about the poll, always so much fun when companies let consumers vote in. Haven't seen it yet, but when I do I'll pick some up for sure! I did see a new-to-me frag of the V05 shower gel, it was creamy mango or something like that. I only knew of the pink(peony something) green (cucumber etc) and blue (ocean/sea etc.) LOVE V05!!!

  2. I hope these show up in my area eventually! I like VO5 conditioner as a shaving lotion and the shampoo to fill hand soap dispensers. Cheap and good.

  3. I hadn't heard of the poll, but I don't buy VO5 much. I wish the shampoo didn't have sulfates, as I tend to avoid those, but I am going to have to give it a sniff if I come across it. If I like it, I might buy it and use it for co-washing. (I still am using your method. It actually works really well with shampoos and conditioners I'm so-so about and makes me like using them.)

  4. I'm intrigued by the idea of co-washing (which I've never tried) with a light conditioner like V05's. Do you know if co-washing typically has an "adjustment period" when you first start doing it, during which your hair looks really greasy for a while before leveling out? Or does it look good from the start?

    1. Yes, definitely! It typically takes about two weeks, if your hair is on the fine side, for that "heavy" feeling to go away. A lot of people get frustrated and stop before then, and it can take longer for some, but I think it's usually about two weeks. :)

  5. I went to the 99 Cents store today (Sacramento area) and found them. Thanks for the tip.
