Are you happy with your makeup application skills?
I am, to a certain extent. I'm happy with my basic skills and my ability to create solid, dependable looks by selecting colors that work with my skintone, but I wish I were better at contouring and concealing. I also don't have crazy skills when it comes to eyeshadow application and I would love to be able to use the eye colors I have to their fullest extent!
I'm pretty happy with my application skills. I wish that I could learn to do more advanced looks, but I'm happy that my current skills keep me from looking like a clown!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy with mine, and I'm practicing more and more all of the time to keep sharpening them. You can never practice enough. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm happy with everything except brows. Part of the problem is that I suffer from premature greying (I actually don't go grey, I go white) so I can't just fill them in, I have to color the hair as well and it's difficult to find the right balance between the two applications of color. Another issue is that since my brows are basically clear any color I add does not blend in like it does with those with colored brows.. it's all you see.. so color matching is critical. AND I color my hair auburn so it's an extra challenge, couldn't pick something easy like brown could I? lol
ReplyDeleteIt took me a long time to figure out my small, almond shaped, hooded eyes... I've got it down now but I use very non-traditional techniques. Basically I do everything the opposite of your normal eyeshadow tutorial, lol. You have to forget the "rules" and figure out what works for you, especially if you have "unique" features.
I know a lot of people struggle with finding a good contour color.. I did too until I found my HG Loreal True Match powders. Figure out your skin tone match and then just go up (contour) or down (highlight) 2-3 shades. I have not touched a single one of my other contour or highlights since. I'm W3 so I use W1 and W6. I don't use the one actually for my skin tone as setting powder though, I have others I prefer.
True Match is fantastic for that, isn't it? No guessing about whether you're getting a change in undertone when you go lighter or darker, and so many shades! Definitely my favorite drugstore foundation.
DeleteI wish I could know more, but I am more than happy that at least I know something rather than nothing.
ReplyDeleteI am happy but I know I can do a lot better. I try to practice on weekends new ways for applying makeup
ReplyDeleteI am not patient enough on a day to day basis. Basically slap and dash is how I roll. However I would like to do smoky eyes much better than I do.
ReplyDeleteYes. I practice a lot, so I'm pretty good at it.
ReplyDeleteSatisfied but not entirely happy. But I'm also not motivated enough to try for more skill and technique. On a day-to-day basis, I'm a 5-minute face person and it satisfies my more natural makeup aesthetics. Plus I have the asian monolid eye which for me takes too much work for anything more than a one shadow look. For special occasions and events though is when I wish I had more skill but I don't mind spending more time on my makeup to get everything looking the way I want.
ReplyDeleteI think I know enough to get by and look decent for everyday and professional looks, but I am in awe of those who have mastered the more colorful and intricate designs. On the other hand, I prefer the natural look anyway.
ReplyDeleteI am happy because I now know how to apply basic makeup.. I didn't know anything about this a year ago.By learning how to apply it (atleast basically), it made my interest grow and made me go from the only neutrals to other fun colors now.
ReplyDeleteI have improved a lot since I originally started a few years ago, but I need major work on eye shadow and liquid eyeliner wings.
ReplyDeleteI work as an esthetics/makeup artistry instructor at a beauty school. We spend a lot of time teaching clients how to do their own makeup. Sometimes we start from scratch, other times they bring in their makeup bags and we teach them how to use what they have to the fullest. A lot of it has to do with color theory (complementary colors, undertones, neutralizing). Darker colors where you want shadows, lighter colors where you want light to reflect. There's no real right or wrong. If you feel beautiful, you project confidence, and thats what counts!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, G. My skills are fine but I wish I could do more things with my eyes. I just landed a job at the Clinique counter at Macy's, so when they send me to Clinique "school", I'm hoping I can get some tips on better makeup application. :D
ReplyDeleteI agree with you G. Every time I attempt an eye look with a defined outer v it just doesn't look right to me or looks really dramatic. I almost always am not happy with how my winged eyeliner turns out & one of my brows is ever so slightly higher than the other so it never looks perfect to me.
ReplyDeleteI hear that! I have the same asymetrical eye thingy muscles you described, one eye almost always comes out great while the other one...blthaah not even close. Doesn't help that my "off eye" also has vision probs, so I think the asymetry has to do with the eye muscles getting weaker and thus having a droopyness in comparason to the good eye. I aslo have very little lid or socket space, just a lot of under brow area. So yeah, would love to find a way to make my eyes look more even, but even if I come close eyemakeup hardly lasts more than 4hrs. Even w a primer that "works"... so although I own tons of shadows, I mostly just do a cat-eye paired with a bright lip, or a jewel toned cat-eye w neutral lip.
Deletelike you, i wish i had better eye shadow application skills. i can mke do, but i have so many beautiful colors, and i just cant work them as fabulously as some others ive seen.
ReplyDeleteotherwise, i would say the skill id REALLY like to have is choosing skin-toned items (such as foundation, concealers, tinted moisturizers, etc) in colors that actually MATCHED my skin tone! i always think ive chosen the right one, but it never looks natural to me.
I'm pretty happy with my skills, but I do wish I was a bit better with covering dark undereye cirlces and contouring. The best part about makeup, though, is it always washes off, so it's easy to experiment.
